“It’s Going To Be Wild!”

April 28th, 2020

Geeking on Bucs.

Steve Mariucci knows from experience.

The former 49ers and Lions head coach experienced the Bucs’ home stadium at one of its most loud and raucous moments. When his San Francisco 49ers, coming off a fantastic comeback to beat the Giants in the wild card round of the 2002 season, entered the Stadium on Dale Mabry Highway about the same way Christians entered the lions den in ancient Rome.

The Bucs, NFC South champs, were coming off a bye week and the ferocious Bucs defense was rested and hungry. So too was the offense and the Bucs throttled the 49ers 31-6 before nearly 66,000 full-throated, flag-waving fans.

Mariucci expects the Den of Depression to return to its heyday this season. He explained the Bucs’ chances to make a run for a home game Super Bowl in February.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” Mariucci said. “They’ve got a home schedule. A lot of great quarterbacks are showing up there. Drew Brees. Aaron Rodgers, Patrick Mahomes. That place with the ship and the cannons going off, it’s going to be wild!”

A shame it’s a possibility we aren’t going to be able to go to the stadium to see this.

We will have to watch from home more then likely.

  2. Afo Says:

You can watch it from home @tampabucsbro, I’ll be there watching my Tampa playing in Superbowl

  3. David B Smith Says:

Was at that game. Fanfair was amazing!

  4. geno711 Says:

I like the experience we have on defense now. But I also love how we have some more natural leaders out of these recent draft picks on our team.

Vita Vea in the Line – better leader than McCoy
Devin White for the lbs – better leader than David
Antoine Winfield for DB’s – better leader than anyone since Ronde back there.

If healthy, I really do expect a top 10 defense in many of the key categories.

    Great job Jason Licht.

  5. JP09 Says:

Here’s to hoping the Chiefs, Packers and Saints games are scheduled later in the year just in case they figure this out and allow fans back.

I can’t wait to see the look on NO fans faces when Payton breaks the news to them that Brees is going to be benched for Winston, you know since Winston is now better than both Brees and Brady, now that’s going to be wild

  6. WhyIHateOurFans Says:

Devin White a better leader than Lavonte David? Being louder doesn’t make you a leader. I’ll take 54 every day of the week and twice on Sundays

  7. Aubpierce Says:

With less turnovers the time of possession will change dramatically, as will the defense ranking. I expect a top 10 defense.

  8. bucshot Says:

Get all your fan gear out! I haven’t been this BUCKED UP in years……..

  9. Tampabuscsbro Says:

It’s unfair to say that white is a better leader then David.

David by all accounts has been the true voice of this team last year. With McIcecream gone David really stepped up in his leader ship role of the defense. right now white is more of a lead by example type of person.

  10. The sad truth Says:

Most likely there wont be fans in the stands for the ENTIRE regular season. I am hopeful that by the time the playoffs come around, the nation is in a place to be able to hold events. California is saying no events until At Least THANKSGIVING!

If you just think about it in depth, it makes sense. How can/will the NFL determine the correct week for fans to come back? That doesn’t make any sense business wise, they will need to make a concrete date of return. There are a ton of moving parts involved in a NFL game and you cant just, at a drop of the hat, decide that “this is a good week to return”.

If America is going to start opening up already, then sadly there is little hope to see an NFL game, in person, until 2021

  11. David B Smith Says:

I was at that game. Red and white flags everywhere, loud as can be. Was amazing!

  12. Cannon Says:

I hope the stadium is loud with fans.

  13. Joe in Michigan Says:

Stoked for this season! Excited to see how good the Bucs defense can be, for sure! The best thing about higher expectations for this year: there won’t be any VH3/Caleb Benenoch situations, if someone isn’t doing their job, they’ll find someone who can.

  14. Darin Says:

Stop watching the news so much. Games will be played with fans there. Its the flu. Dont go if you have a weak immune system. Basic stuff. And yeah that playoff game was a fun one to be at. Jeff Garcia was running for his life all day.

  15. Joe Says:

I was at that game. Red and white flags everywhere, loud as can be. Was amazing!

So was Joe. It was cool! 🙂

    Seems like a lifetime ago.

  16. JimmyJack Says:

Now the old farts will be too scared to go to the games. That’s good cause they don’t contribute to fan noise. Heead way for the next generation of Buccaneer fans!!!!

It’s gonna be a ton of fun. For all of us. Except the two or three that put their own little opinions above our team. They’ll be sucking lemons all year. And I bet that’s not the only thing they suck.

  17. Ndog Says:

Yeah JimmyJack all those next generation Bucs fans who will have nothing to cheer for in two years.

    So excited…….🥺

  18. PSL Bob Says:

Joe, maybe I missed it, but haven’t seen any discussion of the UDFA acquired by the Bucs. Most will not make the team, although some may make it to the practice squad. But, there are always those rare cases where an UDFA shines and eventually makes the team. I’m particularly interested in those players from very small schools. Licht’s scouting team seems to have a nose for finding those hidden gems. My apologies if I have any of the stats wrong.

    OFFENSE:
Reid Sinnett, QB, 6’4” 225 lb, University of San Diego
John Molchon, G, 6’5” 305 lb, Boise State
Nick Leverett, OL, 6’4” 300 lb, Rice
Zach Shackelford, OL, 6’5” 305 lb, Texas
Josh Pearson, WR, 6’4” 205 lb, Jacksonville State
John Hurst, WR, 6’1” 195 lb, West Georgia
Travis Jonsen, WR, 6’3” 211 lb, Montana State

    DEFENSE:
    Benning Potoa’e, DL, 6’3” 293 lb, Washington
Nasir Player, DE, 6’5” 275 lb, East Tennessee State University
Javon Hagan, FS, 6’0” 215 lb, Ohio University
Cam Gill, LB, 6’3” 230 lb, Wagner College
Michael Divinity, LB, 6’2” 242 lb, LSU
Parnell Motley, CB, 6’0” 180 lb, Oklahoma

  19. Craig Says:

If Brady could come as close to the top as he did with that horrid team last season, he has plenty of talent around him here to go deep into the playoffs. He might even make some back-ups look like stars.

    It will be grand.

  20. SRQ Bucs Fan Says:

I was at that game and we never sat down. It was one of the loudest.

The club lounge was empty everyone was in the bowl. Back then fans actually came to watch the play on the field…

  21. Casual Observer Says:

PSL Bob – thanks for this UDFA list. I have looked into each of them a bit and I also think there may be a few useful “gems” there. Licht sometimes chooses them well. I think Molchon, Jonsen, Player, and Motley are ones to watch. Jonsen is the most interesting. Can play WR, RB, and QB. Real athlete. Will be fun to watch this group.

  22. NDog is an idiot Says:

Agree w you Jimmyjack!! That’s not the only thing they Suck! Look who chimmed in right after your comment! Mr. SuckMaster himself! Go hang out on the Saints sight Ndog! Get ya some JayMiss action out of town

  23. bucsfaninoregon Says:

Hey Sad Truth, don’t waste your time trying to talk realism to these guys. Most will ignore logic and just state’ “There will be a normal season!” No way to explain how other than old f@rts stay home. Do Brady and Gronk have “special immunity”? Maybe given to them by the White House.

  24. JimmyJack Says:

BITE ME NDog……..You know as much about what this team will look like in 2 years as my eight year old daughter.

You cannot stand there with a straight face and tell me if this team makes good decisions they can’t keep the ball rolling. You know it , I know it, anybody reading this knows that. Not only is it fact it is elementery fact!!!

You are a hater NDog. That’s exactually who you are. You are nothing more. A petty rotten little fan. You have turned into everything you have loathed for year.

Phony fraud fake hyprocrite…….all accurately describes you.

  25. SC Bucs Fan Says:

NDog, I feel sorry for you. You are a Buc fan who will be rooting against the Bucs do you can say I told you so. That stinks for you.

Me, I’m glad we are relevant, even if it’s just 2 years. As opposed to 5 years of futility led by JE.

  26. NDog is an idiot Says:

Jimmyjack just speakin the Truth!!! Amen!

  27. Pok Says:

I live in VA- I have been watching 7/8 games on tv for 15years. It’s still awesome. Honestly the games I have been to have been horrible – took my wife to her first nfl game to see us blown out by the panthers by 35. Ugh done with that! She has felt bad for me ever since and can’t believe we actually have a promising team this year! Just be glad for good football with a good team and watch it anyway you can!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!

“Devin White a better leader than Lavonte David? Being louder doesn’t make you a leader. I’ll take 54 every day of the week and twice on Sundays.”

Yeah that statement made me chuckle pretty hard as well.

  29. groberts Says:

Eventhough BA says he likes high expectations, lets be realistic. Bucs have not made the playoffs in 12 years. They have had only 1 winning seasons in 6??

In anycase, this talk about superbowl or failure is nuts. The goal as always is get to the playoffs with healthy players. Then we can talk about next.

Of course, the main goal is the SB trophy, not just play it. In our division, there are only two teams that have ever won….that is the Saints and the Bucs. The Falcons and Panthers are just SB losers. That means their fans whether in their 20s or in their 70s have never and probably will never see them win. In this way, the Panthers and Falcons can never be compared to the Bucs, until they win….at the moment they are nothing. The Saints…despite a great record in the last decade, still have only won once…same as us! They are no better! Forget the records, the nearlyies, the just missed….they have only won once.

  30. TOM Says:

I agree that 54 is the leader or co-leader because I also think JPP is a leader.

  31. ©MadMax Says:

OUR D, WILL SHUT EVERYONE DOWN!

Then we have Brady and Gronk and Evans and Godwin….oh pUUULEEEZE stop it!

and then some wanna be, out of work comics out here want to crap all over us…yeah, do your stupid shtick, hahaha
