Godwin An “Ascending Player”

April 19th, 2020

Best still to come?

Last season was the first in which Chris Godwin was a full-time starter.

If last year was just a taste of what Godwin can do, Joe is certainly looking forward to the main entree.

As he is wont to do, Brian Baldinger, a former NFL offensive lineman and current analyst for NFL Network, likes to break down games and players on Twitter. Joe has that below.

One Baldinger highlight is Godwin trucking Rams corner Aqib Talib for a touchdown at Los Angeles. Also included on the play is a very nice block by tight end O.J. Howard to help spring Godwin.

Baldinger believes Godwin is a big reason why Tom Brady decided to come play for the Bucs. Hard to disagree.

Looks to me that Mr. 5,000 had a good day that day in LA!! That’s what stood out to me ….looking at the tape!!!

  2. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Leonard Fournette might be available for a 6th rounder. That would solve the RB issue and is low cost pick-wise.

He makes 4+ mil this year.

  3. Carl Nicks' big toe Says:

Yeah he did. Too bad there wasn’t more consistency. If he wouldn’t have sh1t the bed so many times, he’d still be the Buc’s QB.

  4. lambchop Says:

But OJ Howard can’t block, we need to get rid of him, he can’t catch. BS. Give him a chance in an offense that features the TE. The kid will play motivated. He just needs to get more aggressive at the point of attack.

I don’t mind him stepping out of bounds some times given his history of getting injured. We’re better off when he preserves his body. It makes no sense to trade him away on a rookie contract while we can use 2 TE sets if our HC and OC wake up that everything doesn’t have to be 15 yards down the field. It took FOREVER to get a screen game implemented in our playbook last year and it was effective.

Tom Brady will have unbelievable options with our offense plus a rookie RB that can catch out of the back field.

I had a dream the Bucs were playing game 1 of the season and I some how missed the start of the game. No way in heck I’m missing the start of the Tampa 2 (Brady’s 2 years here). Bring it!

  5. SOEbuc Says:

Mike, Godwin, and Brate are going to kill it over the middle.

  6. Rod Munch Says:

On a different note the NY Post has kind of a cool article up, Ranking the best NFL Draft selections ever for first 32 picks. The Bucs having 2 of those is cool to see, and they even were good enough to list Lee Roy Selmon as an honorable mention, he doesn’t always get the recognition nationally. Anyways an interesting read.

  7. Rod Munch Says:

Bonzai – If Fournette is really available for that cheap, the Bucs should jump all over it, unless he’s demanding an extension. But if you can get him for one year, then they need to do that. You Brady to win now, not speculate on a 6th rounder.

  8. CalBucsFan Says:

    @Buccaneer Bonzai
Fournette for a 6th would be a steal. Hard to believe that’s all it would take, but I would do that all day long.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We need to pay the man…..

  10. Rod Munch Says:

Godwin will get his money, probably at the expensive of Donovan Smith. That’s part of the reason in a deep OT draft the might strongly consider taking two, one for this year, one for next. Just a WR in one of those top picks as well since what we have as depth is complete garbage. Then if you trade a late rounder for a year of Fournette. Man, wow. If he is that cheap, make it happen Licht.

  11. Sappattack Says:

    Fournette for Howard straight up

  12. Defense Rules Says:

Rod … There are some quality RBs in this year’s draft who’ll probably end up going in Rnds 2-4. Why pay anything to trade for a Fournette for 1 year when we can draft a RB and get him for 4 years for cheap money? Heck I’m even in favor of drafting TWO RBs, one in Rnd 2 and another in Rnd 4 (I’ve already written in the name AJ Dillon into that spot).

  13. BigHog Says:

Well if you asked me they sh** the bed a lot together as a team!!! Let’s see how many ties TB12 sh*** the bed in 2020!…same game different team!!!

  14. ©MadMax Says:

That vid shows how beastly Godwin is!

We’re so lucky to have 2 number 1’s. Thats why I hate the thought of spending a 1st on WR. A #3 WR can be found later….Claypool/Van Jefferson

  15. Afo Says:

They’re stud 5 RB in the draft which we will get one at 45 on a rookie deal, why waste a draft pick or OJ Howard on a guy who we’ll have to pay at least €6M 2021, they’re better RB in the draft and we can draft Clyde or Dobbins at 45 and Dillon in 4th round

  16. Phil Says:

The question I have is are the Bucs going to be able to keep him? I’m afraid they aren’t going to be able to resign him. I would rather keep Godwin and let Evans go.

  17. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @MadMax

I couldn’t agree more! Why are we gripping about WR when we have the best duo since Stallworth and Swann. Both of our guys are more like Stallworth…great possession receivers who can also sneak behind D’s..good YAC guys.

And then there’s two talented TE’s. And we all assume we’re going to draft an RB with hands.

And we also have Scottie and Justin who both have speed and have shown some potential. The draft is loaded with talented guys…speed will be cheap. Basically we are replacing Perriman…he had a great finish but remember how he sucked the first half.

There will be plenty of super fast sub 4.4 guys.

I think we need a guy who can put that speed to use on special teams as well as the #3 WR. We need an explosive return guy.

  18. Jeffbuc Says:

Defense rules the draft is a crap shoot you already know what you have in Fournette. Ronald Jones rashad penny darius guice were 3 of the top 4 rated running backs in there class. Guice was the LSU can’t miss does everything great like this other LSU running back this year. Ronald Jones was the next Jamal Charles. And penny was an all purpose yard machine. They have all three been backups or injured the last 2 years. Every year running backs are over hyped. Sony Michael to the patriots was another supposed steal of the draft. He hasn’t done anything on a team that runningbacks have huge success

  19. BigHog Says:

And that is why GM’s and Coaches should come together and state the type of running back a team needs …A big thumper….a route running pass catcher….an inside runner with the ability to pass protect….after going over what you need…GO get them!! 1st round 2nd round 3rd round, it makes no difference ….if Dillon is your guy then go get him, you don’t take a chance of not getting him !!!

  20. TOM Says:

Right now I would take Godwin over Evans. Cheaper & more consistent.

  21. james west Says:

i knew chris was special his first season as a buc, in my opinion he is better than evans, although mike is a beast, i’m happy we got em both, now we got a man that can deliver the ball in stride instead of hanging them out to dry

  22. Ndog Says:

Well they sure are a lot of pinpoint accurate throws in that video for a guy we keep hearing isn’t accurate and apparently “hangs guys out to dry” right james west, get a clue brother.

By the way they’re about seven throws in that real you just saw that the guy we just got can’t make won’t make and isn’t going to make so yeah we might be better and hopefully we are but don’t expect those stories cuz they ain’t happening with the guy we just got compared to the guy we just let walk.

  23. lambchop Says:

    @Ndog,

Any chance you get, right? Those clips are highlights bro. They are not an entire game, an entire season, an entire career. Winston has enough “throws” where he gets himself in more trouble than he delivers on.

Move on. We are about to witness a surgeon get to work and deliver consistently. You can harp on the stats, I’ll take the wins.

If we do get to the playoffs, I hope someone pushes you off the bandwagon.

  24. Bucsfan951 Says:

Oh look Npuppy bringing up the unemployed one again…

  25. WestChap Says:

Baldinger is one of the best at breaking plays down.

Classic Jameis on full display in this “highlights” (i.e. only good plays) reel where Baldy has to come out and say “bad throw by Jameis behind him” once even though there are several more he just lets slide given the focus is on CG’s incredible body control and ability to adjust. And yet, the Jameis Fan Club only see what they want. Sure hope JW finds a job soon so they too can wander off.

  26. Ndog Says:

You can hope all you I’m not going anywhere little lammy. You just hate being proven wrong, like I always say film don’t lie and this film says that anyone says he’s inaccurate is full of sh!t.

The problem is you think it was all the WRs when this film shows fantastic throws, good catches and great after the catch effort by the WR. Again all those things exist in the film but you joker’s would rather lie and pretend it is true. CAUSE YOU ARE LIARS.

  27. Jerk04 Says:

Ndog you are a joke. I’ve never seen a bigger Winston mark than you and that includes joe and that’s saying something. It’s hilarious you think you know more than every franchise in the league. The dude still doesn’t have a job. The bucs have the greatest of all time At QB and you want a guy no other franchise wants. You’re hilarious. These are called highlights for a WR which means it won’t Include terrible throws. That clip would be hours long. Winston is a scumbag and this franchise is better off with Brady or any other qb.

You continue to show you know nothing about football or Qb play. Haul a$$ N pup

  28. George Rauh Says:

Please extend him now, wait til next year and he will cost you close to 20 million. You can extend his contract now and give hin a signing bonus, cap hit could be 5 million this year

  29. ©MadMax Says:

@stpete, yes sir, thank you. Javon Leake is my guy for KR/PR….

Where the he!! is LUV when you need him!?!? lol

  30. ©MadMax Says:

Ndog is right everyone….just agree and keep moving lol
