Bucs Got “Gronk”

April 21st, 2020

Bucs GM Jason Licht.

[UPDATED: 4:26 p.m.]

Joe is thinking Ian Rapoport is hacking into the phone of one Ira Kaufman.

The Sage of Tampa Bay sports is recording his next podcast as Joe is typing this here post. And just a few minutes ago Ira broke news on the pod that the Bucs are very much interested in wrestling star Rob Gronkowski as a new tight end.

Well, Joe checks Twitter and voila! Rapoport reports that a trade with the Belicheats for the rights to Gronkowski could go down before the draft.

This is just wild to Joe!

[UPDATED: 4:21 p.m.]

It sounds like he is coming.

Jay Glazer reports he has talked to Gronk and that Gronk already took his physical for the Bucs. Seems like it’s just about a done deal.

[UPDATED: 4:26 p.m.] Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com claims the Bucs sent a fourth-round pick to the Belicheats for the rights to Gronk and a seventh-round pick.

  4. Wesley Says:

    No Please god no!

  5. cgmaster27 Says:

All depends on Gronks back ,but if he ‘s healthy, its win now mode. Trade Oj for Gronk and sign gronk. Jees this would be nuts.

  6. Wesley Says:

Old and injury prone over Howard who is going to break out, he’ll no!

  7. alaskabuc Says:

Looks like there might be a little more than smoke with the OJ trade rumors. Get an extra second for Howard and bring Gronk to the Bay!

  8. Casual Observer Says:

    Seems unlikely.

  9. ZZbuc Says:

I can´t predict future, but sounds really really stupid!!!!

  10. Rod Munch Says:

As a lifelong Bucs fan, when good stuff happens, you always except something bad to more than make up for it. Getting Brady and Gronk in the same year? Well, that can only mean the season won’t take place.

I’m more than happy to be wrong and be called an idiot for being negative, and I’ve been very confident that the NFL season will take place… but too many good headlines for the Bucs just make me think there has to be a trap, it’s our Lord and Savior Jesus H Christ just messing with our emotions before the rug is pulled out…

  11. Blogtalkfootball.com Says:

    What the actual EFF?

  12. Pryda...sec147 Says:

    Instant Super Bowl contender!

  13. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

trade oj get gronk…. mE13 CG & gronk…. oh boy. Its up to the shaky backend now & bowles

  14. Wesley Says:

Too old, too injury prone, too much money. Giving up on Howard would be a HUGE mistake.

  15. Blogtalkfootball.com Says:

Can the Bucs handle $10 million against the cap? More likely, Brate goes to New England.

  16. Marlon Says:

Schefter reports Gronk and a 7th to Tampa for a 4th rounder

HELL of a deal….keeping OJ and Brate

Trade, pending physical: Patriots are trading TE Rob Gronkowski and a seventh-round pick to the Buccaneers for a fourth-round pick, source tells ESPN.

  18. Mike28277 Says:

Pats have the leverage if true.

  19. killian Says:

Per Adam Schefter on Twitter, it’s a done deal!

  20. AMI_Chris Says:

    Getting the band back together…

  21. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

    keepin oj & gronk

  22. Blogtalkfootball.com Says:

We are giving up a 4th round pick for Gronk and a 7th…

  23. Anonymous Says:

They did not give up Howard. Only a fourth round pick.

  24. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

WOW….. crazy times in 2020….. brady has that pull…. get a flippin RB…. would like trent williams too

  25. Howard Cosell Says:

Not sure Gronk isn’t “over the hill” in football terms. That arm is really beat up. Not a good move if he gets injured early.
Howard will delegate this decision to BA and Brady and HOPE they keep the Glazers out of it (Glazers thinkin terms of very short term profit and they make moves that appeal to the lowest intelligence denominator of fans. Team builders they are not.)

  26. Bankieb Says:

    Deal is done!

  27. FIRETHECANNONS Says:

Gronk + 7th round pick for one of our 4th rounders

  28. Bird Says:

I dont think gronk needs 10 mil

    Now 7-8ish is possible
Obvious if he comes Brate or OJ are gonzo which would have enough capitAl to sign

People always talk about gronk as a receiver
Homie is a pretty good blocker too. Arians would love that
Arians probably already met with him in secret and gronk realized he is not a prick like belicheat

Appears pats just agreed to trade

  29. Rod Munch Says:

If Brady wants Gronk, then you get Gronk.

You don’t sign Brady to then worry about your cap being messed up in 3 years. Good teams always have “cap” issues that never seem to hamstring them. Meanwhile bad teams don’t act because they’re worried about a “cap hell” that never comes.

For example, different sport, but same idea. How many years in a row have we heard about “cap hell” with the Lightning, yet they never seem to lose guys they want to keep. Amazing how that works.

  30. Coburn Says:

I hate to say it again. . hut watch there not be a season now .. if there is a season the Bucs were meant to have it all it will be the season that never happens…

  31. Ocala Says:

    Just became official

  32. nick Says:

    its official…. Gronk a BUC

  33. Rick Says:

Done deal. Please no more than a third

  34. Umm Says:

Funny looking at all this comments saying OJ Howard was going to break out this year 😂. People who say that definitely aren’t watching games

  35. Rod Munch Says:

Wow, wait, it’s a done deal already!

    AMAZING!

    Love it!

  36. Rick Says:

… for a 4th rounder. Not so bad.

  37. Sarasota Garey Says:

Our TE group is really crowded now

  38. Bangkok Buc Says:

Well, wonder would Brate or Howard are worth in trades now???

  39. Nosetackle Says:

    Turning into a circus.

  40. ClodHopper Says:

This is hilarious. I expect less than 10 catches for the year. Anything more and it’s pure entertainment bonus!! Love the move tho!!

  41. JP09 Says:

    Hahahahahah we got Gronk too!!!!!

  42. Bucsfan951 Says:

I don’t know how I feel about this. I want to be excited but… I guess I’ll stay quietly optimistic about it

  43. WhyIHateOurFans Says:

Trade Brate and keep Howard and Gronk. Boom! Plus it’s no cap hit for getting rid of Brate.

  44. Bird Says:

Bucs could have played hard ball for 5th or 6th but whatever
Hope it was their late 4th

  45. Rod Munch Says:

How about this as a way to solve the 3rd WR problem – just ask OJ to slim down a bit and play him as the #3 WR. The guy had better messurables than Evans, what a total nightmare he’d be for teams lining up outside and getting one on one coverage with a corner. If he didn’t have to put any time/effort into blocking, I think he can become a better receiver – and outside of last year, in his first two years, he was an excellent receiving option.

They’ll probably trade him for like a 5th, but I’d rather not waste my 1st rounders and I’d give him every chance to make the move.

  46. Joe in Michigan Says:

I HOPE it was the later of the two 4th Round picks.

  47. Bucamania Says:

    HELL YEAH!

  48. Howard Cosell Says:

I guess I’ll stay quietly optimistic about it

So how’s that been working out for you?

  49. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Now we can trade OJ either as bait in a trade up, like getting back into the 1st, or hopefully get a 2nd round pick for him.

  50. Kobe Faker Says:

    “10 milly? Yikes

    What Brady wants Brady gets

BA and Gump getting squeezed out end of the year

Bryan Glazer is the new baby Kraft”

    Gisele Bundchen

  51. Ndog Says:

Like I’ve been saying Superbowl win or bust, there is no other outcome that is acceptable.

  52. permanent_moderation_doghouse Says:

Give us another RB and the offense is just unstoppable.

  53. Pewter Power Says:

Not a good look for OJ Howard someone is gone either him or Brate, we have way too many tight ends on the roster for a coach that doesn’t use them

  54. Bird Says:

    Rod

I agree. He runs a 4.5 forty time
OJ could be third /slot whatever you want to call him

Biggest front line in all of basketball
    I mean football

  55. NOLES Says:

    UFB…… Oh yea!!!!!!

  56. SkBucsFan Says:

Wow. Licht is gawd-awful. I don’t care if Brady convinced him to do this, grow a pair and act like a responsible GM

  57. Orlandobuc Says:

Now trade OJ for a 2nd or 3rd and use that pic for oline help

  58. Bird Says:

    Hahahah

Everyone excited and Ndog saying same thing

  59. Joeypoppems Says:

meh. Don’t really understand the move tbh. Other than making Brady happy I guess lol.

I gotta imagine an OJ trade has to be coming at some point, right? No reason to have OJ, Brate, AND Gronk…

Unless we are all of a sudden going back to Koetter’s offense where its 12 personnel almost all the time then it makes sense.

  60. Eric Says:

Man you kidding me I thought BA don’t use TE that guy is a use car salesman we will be so far worst when this experiment fails!

  61. Howard Cosell Says:

Bryan Glazer is the new baby Kraft”

LOL based on what? His abject failure as an NFL owner?
That’s a blazing insult to Bob Kraft

  62. Tackleblockwin Says:

    This is just crazy.

  63. Swampbuc Says:

    Great. Stacked at TE now.

  64. David Says:

Well that sucks. Can’t stand him.
They have Brate and OJ… what the hell do they need an overpaid, injury prone TE for?
Almost anything they give up is too much.
He won’t last half the season.
    This is stupid.

  65. ClodHopper Says:

Let’s go get Wes Walker, Ben Watson, Rodney Harrison and Teddy Brusci too so we build a dynasty!

  66. Vorblaw Says:

Waste of a draft pick. Gronk is made of glass. Definitely anything less than a Super Bowl is a wasted season.

  67. GhostofSchiano Says:

And just when I had given up on Licht….he does this.

  68. Howard Cosell Says:

    @ David
LOL but…but…..I remember 7 years ago when Gronk was good!!!!!!!!

  69. rrsrq Says:

He could’ve been had for a 7th rounder next year, Pats had no hold on Gronk, bad trade. That likely means you are trading O.J., it has to be nothing less than a second

  70. bucshot Says:

What a time to be a BUCS fan!!!!!!!!!

  71. Aaron Says:

Going to have a short off-season…give Brady someone he trust. Gronk can block and he gives us another red-zone target. We dont have to use him like NE did..plus, I think Gronk will find that he has more space to catch and protect himself here…everyone knew he was getting the ball in NE.

  72. Wint Says:

I think giving up a 4th was too much. I hate to see OJ go, but if we can trade him for trent Williams that would be awesome!

  73. Kgh4life Says:

I would have liked the trade a lot more if the Bucs didn’t give up a 4th rounder; 6th rounder would have suffice.

  74. theodore Says:

5 wide with Evans, Goodwin, Gronk, OJ, and Brate

  75. Ndog Says:

But I thought upgrading the quarterback was all we needed to do because the one we had before was so horrible what happened all that logic?

  76. Howard Cosell Says:

What a time to be a BUCS fan!!!!!!!!!

I know!! All 3 of us are really excited!

  77. Rod Munch Says:

It’s amazing the idiots that think getting one of the best TE’s in league history, who is still just 30 years old, is questionable because they gave up a 4th rounder.

    LOL!

    What a loser mentality.

  78. EA Says:

    It’s happeniiiiing.

  79. Joe in Michigan Says:

Some of you are acting like Gronk is as old as Brady. Gronk is 30 years old (31 soon). Trade down 3 rounds for one of the best TE’s in NFL history? Some of the “fans” complain about this? Wow, some of you are never happy.

  80. Ivan The Insider Says:

OH AND ONE MORE THING TO CELEBRATE TODAY…

    NO MORE JAMEIS WINSTON!!!!!! BAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

  81. Ndog Says:

just like I said last week Brady watched film of OJ Howard and said that guy caused seven turnovers to the quarterback last year he helped me get this job, but I don’t want him give me a real player and here we are.

  82. crazyBucs_CL Says:

    @Howard Cosell Says:
“Not sure Gronk isn’t “over the hill” in football terms. That arm is really beat up. Not a good move ……”
NOT A GOOD MOVE?????!!!! that is a FANTASTIC move ….
forth round pick (which we have screwed up ALMOST all the time), for Gronk+seven round pick …..
that is GREAT, no matter of the outcome….. and giving more confidence to Tom….
    Kudos to JL…..

  83. Bucsfanman Says:

Wesley- OJ Howard has yet to play a full season in a Bucs uniform. Banking on the “hope” that OJ turns a corner is what has got this franchise in the mess it’s in to begin with.
A healthy Gronk (fingers crossed) is a HUUUUUGE upgrade, and it’s not even close.

Again for those labeling Gronk “injury prone”, find OJ Howard’s complete 16 game season. And for a 4th round pick?!
    YES!
    PLEASE!
    THANK YOU!

  84. gofortheface30 Says:

Rod – hit the nail on the head. We got THE best TE in history. Still only 30, and there are people on here that have the actual nerve to complain. Unreal. From a business perspective, Tampa is now THE team in the league, THE team to watch. Let’s enjoy being the marquee team in the NFL, and lets go do this.

  85. Kobe Faker Says:

“Is this World wide wrestling or the NFL?

Gronk cant hold up for 9 games

Trade OJ for a 2nd round. Give the kid another chance and far away from this dumpster fire”

    Kobe Faker

  86. Trench War Says:

They got Brady for less than Winston.
They got Gronk because of Brady
The BUTT-HURT Winston apologist that keep saying Super Bowl or bust
are the worst Buc fans EVER. Quit showing your @sses.

  87. TheBucsAnthem Says:

New England fans must be losing their flipping minds right about now

  88. Howard Cosell Says:

    @Rod

Maybe I’m being overly pessimistic (Bucs will do that to you).
I Just checked the Gronk stats:
Gronk actually had pretty good seasons in 2017 and 2018.
He played 14 and 13 regular season games in those seasons respectively

  89. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Kobe is right too ^^^^^

  90. Erick Says:

Bucs get one of the best TEs ever and some of you are upset? Yes, he has injury history, but I’ll take my chances on him feeling better now than he has in years after the past year plus off. Howard has underperformed here and you cannot tell me the Bucs are not a better team with Gronk at TE than Howard.

  91. Buczilla Says:

Awesome news, I hope that we only had to give up our lesser 4th rounder though.

  92. NOLES Says:

Now w a RB on this squad watch out. Looks like BPA in RD 1 bc Gronk can block

  93. Howard Cosell Says:

    @ crazy yadda whatever

Nice job clipping my comment right before I say ” if he gets injured early.”
Way to take it out of context. You must be a politician

  94. Bucsfanman Says:

Kobe- OJ is not worth a 2nd rounder, not if Gronk is worth a 4th.
Not on ANY planet can you compare the two! We can’t keep banking on hope.

  95. Patrickbucs Says:

Wow, can’t believe it. Chalk that up as another that wants to play with Brady. He’s been off for what 11/2 years? His body should be pretty healthy now. Hope we keep Howard, we could line them up.

Good point by Aaron and how much more room he will have..

  96. Mikadeemss Says:

I’m late to the party, but no f’n way!!! WOW!! Damn, you GO BUCS!!!!!

  97. Howard Cosell Says:

So how’s that been working out for you?

WORKING OUT GREAT, THANKS FOR ASKING

  99. Bucsdelight Says:

Which TE we trading in the draft?

  100. Erick Says:

4th rounder too much? Half of you probably don’t even remember the 4th round pick from last year

  101. Howard Cosell Says:

You sissies with the multiple user names never cease to amaze me.
Be a man! Use a single usename and stand behind it!

  102. geno711 Says:

Love the move, I will give Jason Licht credit.

All NFL GM’s miss lots of times. They have to also hit to keep their jobs.

Lovie Smith was not his coach. He realized that but at the same time had drafted a QB 1st overall. Picked coach Koetter who was already working with Jameis to continue to try to develop the most important position on the team.

Did not work out well but went ahead and got one of the best QB guys (not the best though) to try to get more out of Jameis when he hired Bruce Arians.

Licht and Arians realized Jameis was fine but in the end not special. Went out and got special at QB.

Licht made mistakes. Kicker in 2nd round – huge miss. CB in 1st round – miss, QB – 1st overall (not a miss) but not what you hoped.

Undrafted hits – Brate and Humphreys.
No name hits – Marpet and maybe Cappa

Misses in MJ Stewart and Caleb Benenoch.

Hits in Carlton Davis and Jamal Dean.

Probable miss in OJ Howard – but backs it up with a trade for Gronk.

Misses on many free agent defensive lineman and a few offensive lineman but backs it up with JPP, Shaq Barrett and maybe Joe Haeg as very good players for the team.

He went for the quarterback in Jameis Winston. Almost hit with him.
Did not work out even though he had two solid offensive coaches.

  103. Howard Cosell Says:

    @Bucsfan951

Good to hear! Being optimistic hasn’t worked out well for me at all. I feel like an idiot every year! But then I’m a man and I’m live in the real world

  104. crazyBucs_CL Says:

Tom will have 3 very good TE, and two great WR……. boy o boy……..
I guess the sons (Glazers), are doing what the OLD man (their father) did 18years ago…
    I’m soooo impressed…..

  105. Ivan The Insider Says:

Ndog busy running all kinds of scenarios on his basement whiteboard to figure out how to still say Winston would have accomplished just as much as Brady if given the same roster.

He’s scribbling faster than John Nash on a library window right now.

  106. Jean Lafitte Says:

No way ..Gronk? ..someone poke me

  107. Rod Munch Says:

Howard Cosell – Gronk was amazing, and he’s had a full season to heal up. He had a lot of nagging issues and really wanted time off, and he got that. There was never any issues with his mindset or being lazy or anything, the guy is a full effort guy when he’s on the field. I will agree that off the field he’s really annoying, his frat boy stuff is just lame, but on the field, he’s one of the best ever – and if he played for another few years, he’d likely be in consideration for the best ever. Also he’s an underrated blocker – since he catches the ball people often don’t talk about how good of a blocker he is.

Giving up a 4th, and getting him, plus a 7th, is quite a coup for the Bucs. Yes, everything could blow up in the Bucs face, but that’s the risk they took when they got Brady (and to be clear I’m happy with them taking that risk – but I’d be a lot more happy about it if they somehow convinced Winston to be the backup).

  110. Joe in Michigan Says:

Kobe Faker says “Gronk can’t hold up for 9 games”

It’s no wonder the Bucs can’t win games at home, with “fans” like you. With all of the negative energy with the defeatist “fans”, there’s a black cloud over Raymond James Stadium. Please pick a different team to troll.

  111. Clean House Says:

Wait till Arians and Leftwhich make him earn his keep blocking first

  113. King C Says:

Am I supposed to be excited about signing a concussed TE who can only play part-time or else he will get injured.
AND we gotta give up a draft pick to Patriots and will over pay.
I’d much rather keep the young stud OJ, sorry.

  114. Howard Cosell Says:

    @Joe in Michigan

I think the Bucs epic suckage has little to do with guys like Kobe-sock-puppet LOL

  115. crazyBucs_CL Says:

…we getting Gronk, with ZERO risks…..this is unheard ….. 3 games, 5 games, all season, or all the way to the SB…. whatever we get fro him is with NO risk.
I bet you guys…. all the NO NO NOs come from JW fans, not BUCS fans….
It is impossible not to be excited if you are a Bucs fan

  127. crazyBucs_CL Says:

Bucs will take what is left from contract: 1 year and 10 mil ….
unknown if a reconstruction of contract will happen …

  128. ItzOK Says:

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. unreal I will personally kill or cure corona virus myself to make sure football starts on time this season.

  129. Jerry Jones Says:

    @Wesley…You really are a simpleton.

  130. Joe in Michigan Says:

    Howard Cosell: You’re probably correct.

  131. Kansas95Buc Says:

So we sign a TE when we have a system that doesn’t use TE much?

  132. Soggy Says:

This is great news if you are a real bucs fan, oh no we have Brady now gronk the sky is falling, JW is gone get over it

  133. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

Wow man!! Just… Wow!! What do you do as a defensive co-ordinator against this team?? I’m 41 and I’ve never in my life I don’t think seen a offense this stacked… On paper at least!!…. I mean wow man!! And still have the draft!!

  134. DaBux Says:

    JUST OMFG.

  135. bucfanforver Says:

    HELL YEAH!

  136. 541BucsFan Says:

Licht just got Gronk for a seventh round draft pick.

Keep that one top of mind next time someone brings up Aguayo.

Licht is winning this off season.

  137. lambchop Says:

    @Kansas95Buc,

Yes, because we will not adjust our offense at all, right? Lol, bro this offense is going to be totally different than last year. They’re going to mix the Patriot way with the BA way. I just hope all these dang personalities mesh and get the F along and the season actually happens!

I have to say, looks like Brate will have to restructure or be dealt. Juice is still on his rook deal so unless he’s the more attractive trade bait, I’m leaning towards something shaking out with Brate. Hopefully, we can restructure Brate and Gronk’s contract. I would hate for the Bucs to trade Juice for 1 or 2 years of Gronk’s service.

It’s sad cuz Brate and Juice were on video with their new jerseys and Brate actually wore his with his helmet on. LOL.

  138. lambchop Says:

    @541BucsFan,

We traded one of our 4th Rd picks for Gronk. We got Gronk and a 7th in return.

Licht got fleeced. Pats would have taken anything because Gronk would never play for them again,. You could have given them a 2021 7th round pick or a few deflated footballs for the rights to him.

On top of that, you didn’t renegotiate his deal, so you lost all of your remaining cap room. How stupid!!!

  140. Elita Vita Says:

Gronkowski is NOT an old man. He’s only a little over 2 years older than Cameron Brate.
