Becton Now Within Reach?

April 20th, 2020

Will Bucs get lucky?

Trading up into the top-ten to grab a right tackle has many Bucs fans squirming in their seats (if those rumors hold water, which Joe is sensing could be just hot air).

If the target of the Bucs’ desire happens to be an eventual replacement for left tackle Donovan Smith, trading up makes a bit more sense (and Joe understands this is many fans’ wish). Joe also knows the team does not share the popular opinion of Smith that so many fans hold.

Drafting a right tackle in the top ten is a pricey. Then again, the Bucs drafted a middle linebacker at No. 5 last year.

However, if the Bucs are only seeking a right tackle, Louisville stud Mekhi Becton might be a very short trade-up if not fall to them at No. 14.

Last week it was learned that Becton blew a whiz quiz at the combine. Not smart. He has since been calling teams explaining his mistake (to be fair, no one has any clue outside of the NFL and Becton’s inner circle why he tested positive. It could be a simple banned substance in a protein bar at a health food shop.

Helmethair Mel Kiper of BSPN says his research in the wake of Becton’s news reveals the Bucs just may luck out with him falling in their lap, as Kiper explains in the BSPN video below.

Maybe we do get lucky, and draft Becton. Is Licht going to trade up to guarantee a tackle?

  2. BrianBucs Says:

This guy looks to me like somebody that might eat himself right out of the league.
At just 21 years old, he is already a biiiiiiig man

  3. Cobraboy Says:

Bucs took Hargreaves instead if Tunsil. I hope they learned s lesson.

  4. ©MadMax Says:

Not at 14, NOT AT 14!! He will drop. If we dont land Simmons, trade down and grab him in the 20’s….plus he’s a LT, we need a RT….I know he can play it, but just saying.

Wills, Wirfs, Thomas at 14 unless Simmons is in the plan!

  5. Pryda...sec147 Says:

    Mad max get a book

  6. Tampabuscsbro Says:

Joe is still salty about the devin white pick a few days from it being a year later. Stop taking about him like he was a bust and underperformed.

  7. ©MadMax Says:

Pryda, a book on what? How to deal with salty a$$ internet trolls….ok

  8. Afo Says:

@Madmax, Thomas is more of an RT than he’s and the reason why Wills play RT is because of his left handed QB TUA, I don’t see Becton falling that hard tho

  9. Jean Lafitte Says:

I don’t see him dropping to 14, but if he does, we gotta pull the trigger. Especially if he’s the last of the big four.

  10. AwShbucs Says:

At 364 he only has 15% body fat and he ran a 5.11 40. The same 40 time that Vita Vea ran weighing 346.

The dude is a specimen. He’s mean. And he can play both tackle spots. If he’s there at 14 he should be the pick.

  11. ©MadMax Says:

^ 15% body fat? dude what are you smoking?

  12. Steven Says:

BrianBucs, he’s an offensive tackle, what do you expect him to look like? Check his combine workout: https://youtu.be/_U-SrdO5ttQ
Dude is the real deal and could fall to us at 14 after popping.

Max, I don’t agree with trading up but I don’t think the Bucs should get cute this draft. Just take the safe picks this year and not trade down!

  13. adam from ny Says:

^^^ he meant 15 pound keesters or coconuts in a bowling ball bag

  14. westernbuc Says:

Considering the NFL just basically legalized recreational drugs for their players, why would any team care? If the guy still loves the game and does his homework, and stays out of jail, then you take him

  15. stpetebucsfan Says:

Why would any team care indeed but especially the Bucs.

Warren Sapp! Never would have gotten he and DB55 in the same draft if it hadn’t been for the alluring Mary Jane.

The only real red light is his appetite but that’s true for a lot of tackles. See if I can trigger Joe. Isn’t that why we let Donald Penn walk…weight issues?

  16. Defense Rules Says:

No one knows if Becton will be there or not when we pick at #14. If he is, great. If not, we just move on to our next priority. But giving up a much-needed Rnd 2-4 draft pick to move up for anyone should be an absolute last resort. There are a number of quality Tackles available this year. Let’s not overthink this.

  17. Pancake block Says:

That’s the same reason Warren sap fell into our lap

  18. Redblud Says:

Defense Rules, Exactly. If it’s not Jamal Adams, stay out and get BPA.

  19. NOLES Says:

The guy has weight problems & some control issues aS he couldn’t pass a drug test. So he is lazy & unintelligent money is going to make those traits better. He worries me..

  20. Casual Observer Says:

Agree with rules. Trading up is risky – and not needed.

  21. PSL Bob Says:

Man, I hope Kiper’s right. Becton is a beast. I will be ecstatic if we get him at #14. However, I agree with others, he’s not worth trading up. Move on to another need if he’s gone.

  22. Greg Says:

15% percentage body fat? You ARE crazy!! It was 17%!

  23. Danny C Says:

    2 things with him.

    1. failed drug test… don’t think I need to say more here
    2. from what I gather, he can’t pass block.

In case you were wondering, this is a pass first team.

  24. ©MadMax Says:

    ^ yall see that @Danny.

    No! 2nd round maybe

  25. ©MadMax Says:

    Wills, Wirfs, Thomas

  26. lowercaseg Says:

if its just weed, who cares

  27. 813bucboi Says:

    dont trade up….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  28. JimbobBucsFan Says:

I just don’t see the Bucs trading up at all. Licht has shown no inclination to do so in the first round in the past. Arians has stated publicly how he feels about drafting high for offensive linemen.

If Becton fell to 14 I could see it. We would be getting a behemoth run blocker at RT early on. He is supposed to have the highest ceiling of the top five tackles in this draft according to many. He can become a stud at LT later on.

Warren Sapp had bigger concerns about drug use when we tagged him than Becton appears to at this time. We know how that worked out.

  29. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Go back and reread Cobraboy’s comment at 12:29 am and and AwShbucs” comment at 4:08 am.

    Amen to both!

Drafting Becton at 14 would be a coup.

  30. bucshot Says:

If……BIG if……..he is still there at 14…. lock him up! Monster for Brady!
