“You Can’t Just Take Last Year, Fit It Into This Year, And Add Pieces”

Kurt Warner talks Tom Brady

Joe would say now that the Bucs are a 10-win team in 2020, which is sure to be good enough for the postseason under the newly-expanded playoffs.

But anyone thinking 12 or 13 wins, in March, might be served well by taking a deep breath. However, Joe already smells lots of fans and media looking at the acquisition of Tom Brady alone equaling another 5-plus wins atop the Bucs’ 7-9 record last season.

Joe asked a wildly optimistic fan last night a simple question, ‘Do you think Brady will have a bad game next season, an off day?’ His answer was, No.

“The thing that we know in this business is that you can’t just take last year, fit it into this year, and add pieces,” Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner told The Rich Eisen Show this week, after Eisen said he sees the Bucs as an 11- or 12-win team.

Every season is different and last year is always last year, Warner emphasized, and you can’t forget other teams. Warner sees the 7-9 Falcons with Todd Gurley and their overall talent as primed for an offensive explosion to rival the Bucs’.

Warner acknowledged Brady throwing in the neighborhood of 24 touchdowns and 8 interceptions with the Bucs (Brady’s 2019 totals) and “not getting in his way” like Jameis Winston did last season makes him think the Bucs are a team ready for double-digit wins.

It’s still a team game and even though it’s common to think the Jameis-to-Brady switch instantly equals 4 or 5 wins, Joe can’t go there, maybe 3 wins.

The way some people talk about what Brady’s arrival will mean, Joe is starting to think these same folks believe Brady can cure the common cold, end traffic on Dale Mabry Highway, solve the Bucs’ kicking issues and rushing ineptitude, and get Florida to approve sports wagering.

At least Brady got the uniforms changed.

Im guessing this is the joe in love with jameis writing this. First off the bucs front 7 is going to be incredible on defense, if the backend improves this should be a top 5 defense. Brady to Evans is going to set nfl records and oh ya, there will not be close to 40 turnovers by the guy touching the ball the most. 10 wins minimum.

  2. Chesapeake Bucco Says:

If the team stays relatively healthy and the D continues to play well, we will be in every game and the Brady difference means we win more close games than we lose….unlike last season.

  3. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

I think 11-12 wins is feasible if the kicking situation is solved. Last year they would have been 9-7 if not for a kicker choking. I honestly think they will win about the same number of games if Jameis had returned. The defense turned the corner around the middle of the season and now that they are bringing back Suh they were able to keep the major pieces in place. If they pick up a good RT in the draft or trade and draft a good RB the sky should be the limit.

  4. rrsrq Says:

I don’t think adding Gurley to the Falcons scares the Bucs, we saw that movie last year, we put a lot of top shelf RBs to the ground in their own backfield, but like Kurt Warner said, last year is last year.

  5. El Buco Realisto Says:

Look at all the “IF” statements above for success!!!!!!!!!!! I will play too!!!!!!!!! “IF” some players and coaches were 5 years younger in their careers, this could be a good team!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you can’t draft, you have to build a short window team thru free-agency!!!!!!!!!

    Lol!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I can’t see any way we miss the playoff’s this year,

  7. LJS4th Says:

Brady has something to prove….I can Win without Bellicheat!!! That alone will add more to the win column. He also comes from a winning background so the other players will play up to his standards as they all want to win as well. I feel the Bucs will surprise this year, but will start slow because of the lack of practice at the beginning.

  8. Defense Rules Says:

Agree with Realist (and that concerned me Realist but I recovered) that folks are playing the ‘IF’ game when they start predicting wins. Let Vegas do the odds-making. Like Warner emphasized, every season is different, and last year is always last year. Bucs are building something ‘nice’ BUT … we’re not finished, it’s still a team game, AND it still has to perform on the field. Time will tell.

I am curious though Joe, how did Brady get the uniforms changed? Since that’s been in the wind for months apparently, are you saying that there’s been something going on between Brady & the Bucs for months now? Wow, that smacks of illegal tampering. Is BA about to be suspended for a year like Sean Payton was? (Conspiracy theories are fun, aren’t they Joe).

  9. Jim Says:

Even just a winning season would be great and a real improvement. Let’s just brighten up and enjoy the ride…

  10. Ed Says:

The difference is that the Bucs now posess a QB that will do the following the ex couldn’t:

Be able to keep games close with less turnovers earlier in game

Add a quicker short passing game that will improve time of possession

Be consistent with predictable stability throughout an entire game

    Keep defense off the field

    More accurately placing ball

Who would you rather have running your offense with less than 2 minutes to go and needing a score, the GOAT or the ATM?

Games last year that team would have won with Brady- Niners, Giants, Falcons, Texans. All home games, all games Winston gave up too many points due to turnovers

  11. Bucs Guy Says:

Not sure how many games the Bucs will win, but I absolutely believe the Bucs make the playoffs. The only thing that will stop the Bucs is injuries.

  12. Based weeb Says:

Okay, that last line about the uniforms made me chuckle lol

  13. Alanbucsfan Says:

20 less interceptions = potentially 20 more scoring drives
Not hard to imagine Brady with 30 TD passes this year
And with the DLine back (by the way, Clowney is still available), run defense should remain stellar and
Bucs D will be fresher every game with longer offensive possessions

  14. Ocala Says:

The kicker better not suck like he did last year. The Bucs are most likely an 11 or 12 win team with average NFL kicking. If Gay kicks like he did last year the Bucs will win somewhere between 8 and 10 games.

  15. gotbbucs Says:

Just get to the postseason and give us a chance, that’s all I care about. I don’t care if its 9 wins or 13 wins, just get in the tournament. If we get in the playoffs relatively healthy I like our chances to make a run.

I expect it to take at least half the season this year for everyone on offense to get on the same page considering the abbreviated offseason and possible changes in philosophy, but keeping the defense together was paramount. The defense is going to have to get us through the first 8-10 weeks, after that you have to hope the offense starts to click and they can carry some steam into the playoffs.

I don’t care if all Brady does is 3500 yards and 24 TD’s in the regular season, so long as he still has an arm come playoff time.

  16. SteveK Says:

    Joe,

Interesting take. Brady is the best ever. His worst season is 9 wins, and he doesn’t make mistakes at a legendary rate.

Joe, you like to compare Todd Worrell- pitcher- as someone with a live arm who needs to figure it out, and “you can’t teach arm talent”. I get how that gives you hope for Jameis, but it’s not the case.

Jameis is like the pitcher that doesn’t focus, work quick, and walks a bunch of guys or gives up hits. The defense playing behind him does worse because it’s hard to stay as focused on the game when your pitcher is not going after guys. Similarly to football, guys get disengaged bc of all the mistakes, losing, and off the field dumb asserey (though that has been better)

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Those last two games we blew coupled with the Gay blown Giants game would have been 10 wins last year……I certainly feel we could achieve that in 2020.

  18. TehW Says:

So much racism in these comments. Joe should seriously consider shutting them down to get some of the bigots out.

  19. Craig Says:

The amount of rest the defense will get, with a bunch fewer turnovers, will help the team a bunch.

Accurate passes will cut down the hamstring injuries, because the receivers won’t have to adjust on the fly.

A real two or three minute offense will cut down on opponent scores near the half and end of the game.

Just those things point me to a 10-11 win season.

  20. TOM Says:

Everybody has a bad game at one time or another. Even Superman. Thats why you need a top defense & Running game.

  21. Buczilla Says:

If Brady were on last year’s team I think that we would have easily won 5 more games. No idea what the injury situation will be this year, but if Brady stays healthy and there are no major injuries to star playes, we’ll be in the playoffs. I guess this puts me in the overly optimistic crowd, but I don’t care. Dude, we got Tom Flipping Brady!

  22. SOEbuc Says:

    Joe

I could see this team being a 12-14 game winning team. And it’s not cus I love the Bucs (maybe a little but it’s cus I keep up). Ten sounds ridiculous. Dline and defense are coming back to a second year in Bowels defense. NFC South is not as tough as it was for a while. We have THE BEST WR duo in the league. Hopefully find a RB.

    Uno. 7-9 with JW30/30
Dos. We lost 8 games by less than seven points last year.
Tres. It’s freaking Tom Brady!!! He says he’s still fresh to play.

    OR….

Tom “America’s Favorite Statue” Brady will get blown up behind this subpar o-line and well watch Blaine Gabbert lead this team to an exciting 3-13 finish. You people are putting a lot of stock in a 40 something, immobile QB.

  24. sincethebeginning Says:

Sure Brady will have a couple “bad” (for him) games. But that’s why you have a tough defense, to keep you IN those kinds of games.

And I love Kurt Warner but I take issue with him thinking Atlanta is something to be afraid of because they added Gurley. That dude hasn’t been right since the second half of their Super Bowl season and obviously the Rams lost faith in his ability to produce. I don’t think he’s going to have this big a bounce-back that people assume. It would have happened last year already. I also think Matt Ryan can’t win with the coach he’s got anymore. Since his OC went to San Francisco he has sucked. Atlanta is a 7 win team, max.

But what do I know? I’m also of the mind that Brady will have a resurgence like Peyton Manning did when he went to the Broncos, and he’s going to throw a mind-blowing amount of touchdown passes for the next couple of years just like Manning did before he hung it up. 40+ TDs for Brady this year, even with a couple “bad games” thrown in there.

  26. Mike Johnson Says:

Don’t believe the Hype Buc fans. Here we go..down that path….

  27. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Mike

WTF is wrong with you man. Were you the main fluffer for “Blameless”.

We get it!! You JW lovers have now morphed into disgusting blog trolls.

I remember a couple of weeks ago when Munchkin in particular was singing your song….no way in hell Brady would EVER come to Tampa.

Losers with attitudes like yours SUCK THE JOY OUT OF LIFE!!!

So let’s edit your statement…”Don’t believe the FSU/Blameless hype…here we go down that path.

Don’t tell ME to be a negative loser!!!! EVERY freaking book I’ve ever read about approaching life from Norman Vincent Peales’ ‘The Power of Positive Thinking” on.

What really disturbs me about the “Blameless” crowd is that I no longer believe they are really hoping Brady succeeds.

So Mike hop on board the train with that locomotive chugging up the hill singing…”I think I can’t…I think I can’t.”. Stop with the emotional defense of JW at all costs. This btw is ONE of the reasons people hate the UBER (PUN INTENDED) divisive Jameis Winston!!!

  28. Chris Says:

I for one am a Bucs fan once again. Bucs fan, not Nole fan, if you’re just a fan of Jameis, just go away, I know I stopped posting in here after the Uber incident. That alone was it for me along with all the other allegations, hell, I rooted for the Bucs when color blind Vincent Van Throw was giving it up every other possession. And no, it’s not a color thing, I would love to see a Jordan Love….gun of an arm….without the head problems of Blameless , learn under Brady. But, than again, like many of my posts before, I’m sure Seminole Joe will toss this one into the internet trash can
