You are it.

Updated 8:58 a.m. – This was as surprising as the sun rising in the east this morning.

The Bucs slapped sack king Shaq Barrett with the franchise tag, reported Adam Schefter of BSPN. This, however, does not mean the Bucs and Barrett (read: his agent oily Drew Rosenhaus) have ended contract talks. If anything, this buys the Bucs time to hammer out a new contract for Shaq.

Welcome back, Shaq!

Now, time to reel in Jason Pierre-Paul.

Shaq now joins kicker Connor Barth and wide receiver Antonio Bryant as Buccaneers slapped with the team’s franchise tag designation in the post-glory-days era of Tampa Bay football.

Barrett didn’t want to be tagged, but he also said weeks later that he was cool with it.

Hey, it’s not exactly torture to be guaranteed roughly $16 million for the 2020 season. When Shaq signs the tag contract, the cash is guaranteed and he and the Bucs are still free to keep negotiating a multi-year deal.

Of course, Shaq is getting paid for having 19 1/2 sacks last season, and many of them came after the NFL woke up to him being a legitimate and big-time threat off the edge.

Can 27-year-old Shaq get 10 or 11 sacks this season? That would line him up for a much, much bigger payday in 2021.

The Bucs using the tag option means they have no more. Any other Bucs free agent can start negotiating with teams at noon today.

    BOOM!!!

  3. BUC CHEEKS Says:

It didn’t take a Mensa candidate to figure that one out

  4. Tampabuscsbro Says:

For the love of god please tag him as a DE

  5. Sport Says:

Hell Yes! Now let’s go get JPP, Suh and Nassib!

    In BA I Trust!

  7. SteveK Says:

JPP, Nassib and Suh before noon. Then reel in the 🐐!!!!

  8. D-Rome Says:

Great news! I hope Shaq Barrett gets a long term deal by the time training camp starts.

  9. BUC CHEEKS Says:

Ndog is in the fetal position somewhere sucking his thumb with Winston one foot out the door! Bring on Brady and all that follow!!!

  10. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

I should know this but if a long term deal is “hammered out” the tag is not available again correct ?
that and I hope Jameis is not getting “hammered” finding this out

  11. Joe Says:

I should know this but if a long term deal is “hammered out” the tag is not available again correct ?

    Correct.

  12. 813bucboi Says:

    great news!!!

as others have stated, JPP, SUH and the nassib should be next…..

    then teddy!!!!!

brady will be back in NE….mr kraft aint letting brady or bill walk out the door….

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  13. Mitch Says:

Great news. Do we know if his designation is OLB or DE? I could be wrong but I suspect he will play at least part of the season on the tag before being extended.

  14. Gofortheface30 Says:

813 – I think he will be back in NE as well, but it’s also a little naive to think it isn’t a possibility. They aren’t any closer to a deal now than 3 months ago. They are LETTING Tom Brady hit free agency. That speaks loudly

  15. D-Rome Says:

By tagging Barrett and officially allowing Jay-Miss to test free agency, it automatically means that Jay-Miss is a B-U-S-T.

  16. Pewter power Says:

Uh no on nassib he’s slightly better than gholston so please try to go out and do better please. There is no reason to pay a guy simply because he was here the last couple years. Hes average at best and you can find that production in the draft or on the cheap in free agency

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I realize Shaq doesn’t like the tag….because it’s only one year……I think the parties can now get together and work something out…..
He certainly will be getting a huge raise.

When BA said…..”He ain’t goin’ nowhere”…..he apparently meant it.

  18. Ndog Says:

So we are the ONLY TEAM that be would unbelievably dumb enough to take a backup QB and use him to replace a 5,000 yard passer that led the #3 scoring offense in the NFL. Only the dumb a$$ Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

  19. MidwestBucsFan Says:

    Glad to have Shaw back.

Now, time to move onto the “Door No. 2” part of the offseason agenda

  20. Evolvingbucsfan Says:

Shaq in the 4-3 is labeled an OLB which is why it’s around $16.1 mill, if he was designated at DE i believe it would be around $21 mill from what I have read. So switching from a 3-4 to a 4-3 saved the Bucs some coin.

  21. Dave Says:

    NDAW NIG JAMIES SUCK

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Would have been better to hammer out a deal, but the NFLPAs refusal to extend free agency deadline forced many teams to do this because of little time to negotiate.

  23. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

NFLN reporting teams have still not received a copy of the CBA, much less read it.

  24. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Pewter power Says
“Uh no on nassib he’s slightly better than gholston”

    Are you insane????

Nassib only started about half a season the last 2 years, and both years he was on pace for double digit sacks. I challenge you to find better depth than that.

  25. Ndog Says:

Aren’t you all pumped about us having Mr. Glass as our QB going forward?

  26. Billy_45 Says:

    You mean switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4?

    You DON’T have OLB in a 4-3.

  27. Mitch Says:

Bonzai the new CBA was released to the public at least a week ago! Anyone can read it here :

    google cba nfl 2020 pdf

  28. 813bucboi Says:

    ndog

    mr glass?

how many injuries/surgeries has JW had?…lol….

you act like he’s an iron man….lol….JW has had shoulder, knee and eye surgery….lol….

JW is a turnover machine made of glass!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  29. 813bucboi Says:

    ndog

but to answer your question: YES!!!!!!…we are excited!!!!!!!…lol…

are you excited to see JW as a back-up next year?…..

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  30. BrianBucs Says:

    Good News!!!

  31. Bobby M. Says:

Folks keep saying Brady isn’t leaving…..lots of guys leave NE very disgruntled. They acknowledge Belicheck is a great coach but they also state its miserable there. Even Gronk hinted at this a few times. I think Brady is in that mindset…he’s had enough of being under paid, constantly needled in an uptight environment. The Bulls let Jordan go…..Brady can be let go as well. It happens, Belicheck is methodical in how he structures the roster and each position, Brady is searching for his last pay day or new challenge…or combo of both but I think its very possible.

  32. 813bucboi Says:

    face30

sure there’s a possibility but TB12 and bill are going thru an ego situation imo…..

they both want to prove they can win without each other but both arent quite ready to actually make the move….at the end of the day, i think both will realize that the best way to win is to be with each other….

it speaks higher volumes that the titans and 9ers jumped off the brady wagon….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  33. Evolvingbucsfan Says:

Billy, thanks i had it backwards. Brain not fully engaged with coffee yet.

  34. thefinalf33r Says:

GET A DEAL DONE. LOCK HIM UP!!!

  35. Defense Rules Says:

Getting Shaq back, even on a franchise tag, is great news. Hopefully Suh & JPP see this as a positive also (the markets’s been set now) & re-sign quickly. Without the TWO of them, Shaq would probably be fortunate to get those 11 sacks you mentioned Joe.

  36. tmaxcon Says:

so when this one year wonder quits on active duty and lays down like cancer93 and lvd after they got paid what then fanboys?????

  37. Adrnagy Says:

    One year wonder.

  38. Adrnagy Says:

    Now trade him

  39. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Today is shaping up nicely!

  40. Adrnagy Says:

    Pick up some draft pick.

  41. Ndog Says:

So 813 you think a guy that has played in 72 games in 5 years is more fragile than a guy that has played in 44 games in 6 years? Like usual your just spewing complete and utter garbage. But that’s ok we will see how excited you are when Blaine Gabbert is starting by week 8 next year or all of the robust 200 yard passing games that lead to 17 points a game. You people have no idea what you are talking about.

  42. Jonzey Says:

Good now JPP, Suh, Nassib, sign Winston and get Bridgewater to complete for the starting role. Winston will win and he will be a pro bowler this year watch

  43. Youngbucs Says:

Ndog and tmaxcon don’t know what to do or say ignore them

  44. Bucsfanman Says:

Not too many “one year wonders” with 19.5 sacks! I guess you also decided to skip over the fact that he played behind Von Miller.
Hey, it’s your opinion, nothing wrong with that. I tend to disagree though.
    Welcome back Shaq!

  45. soggy Says:

    Nice, let the tampering begin..

  46. WestChap Says:

Whew! Bucs have passed the first test this offseason. This proves the happy talk on Jameis during the season was just “hoping for the best” and all the tough critique after the season was real and not just a smokescreen.

    Next: re-signing DL

Then: picking up Vets at QB and OL by FA or trade… still hoping for Brady and intrigued to see Tennessee and SF bow out while NE spending big on re-signing their D. Maybe Brady does a below market deal to allow us to grab a Conklin or Trent Williams? Dare I dream?

  47. T REX Says:

The Winston mafia are female dogs. Wow. Guys…grab a tampon.

    Wussies.

  48. TOM Says:

Nassib has to be included in the FA signings alongwith JPP (#1 priority) & Suh. Perriman, only if the money is right.

  49. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

    Yay! Bye bye Aimless!

  50. 813bucboi Says:

    ndog

if JW returns, blaine will be starting by mid OCT….lol…

you dont want to see JW on a short leash this year do you?…lol…

and so nice of you to dodge the question….

3 surgeries is more than 1 isnt it?…..

player A has had 3 surgeries since 2017…..player B has had 1 surgery since 2016….

and you think plan B is made of glass?….lol….

not only do you embarrass yourself by defending JW, you embarrass yourself by thinking like JW!!!…LOL…

    GO BUCS!!!!

  51. Sarasota Garey Says:

He just quadrupled what he made last year.

  52. stpetebucsfan Says:

Imagine as NDOG points out a franchise stupid enough to replace a losing QB with a WINNING QB.I

So imagine this. JW supporters do not really care about W’s and L’s. JW blows up throws 6000yds 35 tds 20 ints and leads his new team to his high water mark 9-7 and Teddy throws for only 4500 yds 10 ints 20tds and rides our D to an 11-1 and the playoffs

It will of course the new teams fault not “Blameless” and once again next year will be when “Blameless ” takes them not only to the playoffs but the SB and how stupid we were to let JW walk.
