Return Of The Creamsicles?

March 25th, 2020

Potential comeback.

Yes, the Bucs should be unveiling new uniforms sometime this spring, coronavirus pandemic permitting.

But what about the creamsicles?

It seems per the creator, curator and overall guru of Pro Football Talk, the great Mike Florio, that could happen as early as next year provided a rule change happens.

Yesterday, Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians suggested the NFL changed its helmet rule. Previously, the NFL required teams to use only one helmet per season in the interest of player safety.

Because of that, the Bucs had to stick to their pewter helmets whereby, in theory, the Bucs couldn’t break out the creamsicles for a special occasion. If this helmet rule changes, per Florio, the creamsicles could return.

Appearing on The Dan Patrick Show, Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians said that the creamsicle throwbacks could be returning in 2021, because the league will be ditching the rule that limits players to one helmet per year. This would allow teams that would like to use an alternate uniform with an alternate helmet to do it.

“There will be no change for the 2020 season,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told PFT via email. “There are ongoing discussions for a potential change for the 2021 season, but no decisions have been made.”

Those orange jerseys with the white pants on a sunny afternoon on the green Florida grass were a thing of beauty. It is one big reason Joe got hooked on the Bucs as a kid.

Now if the NFL lets the Bucs wear the creamsicles, is it too much to ask that the NFL allow the Bucs defense to hit and tackle like the old days as well?

    Thanks Joe, I remember watching that play when it happened. Brantley would be thrown out of the league now. He’d be getting death threats on social media. I don’t recall if he even got flagged for that hit?

  2. Steven007 Says:

    “and a good clean shot by Brantley, we have to emphasize that”, yeah, today that’s 15 yards, possible ejection, and a guaranteed 5 figure fine.

  3. JustBucNwin Says:

    A modern version would be cool. I saw a blacked out version posted on social media earlier today that featured ours with orange and it was pretty solid!

  4. Hethrew 30 Says:

    Ah, Josh Freeman. Really liked him…so promising early on. Really liked his pressers. Then he just kind of faded….

    Lifelong Bucs fan…NO to creamsicles.

    We’ll be lucky to have a full season…it is going to be a very very strange NFL season…if it happens at all

  6. JimmyJack Says:

    We looked like girls in them costumes.

    Cool for a throwback game and glad that’s all it will be.

    Haven’t we been laughed at enough?

  7. Elita Vita Says:

    I do believe Brady would look marvelous in an updated very modern creamsicle uniform. I know that supposedly the new uniforms are similar to the last ones. I still would have loved to see them in new orange/white ones.

  8. Hethrew 30 Says:

    Well Joe, lots of people got hooked on Disco too about then…and liesure suits too…but they both died a justifiable death.

  9. PragueBucsFan Says:

    I would like one home game a year in the orange

  10. SOEbuc Says:

    Creamsical could look cool to Bucs fans but it was also the color of the Yucs that others laughed at till 1999. We truly have one of the coolest helmets in the league. I’m so down for the for the new style original reds with the digital drawing you previously posted Joe.

  11. Buc Neckid Says:

    According to the Ladies,
    TB12 already is a Dreamsicle
    in 2021 he’ll be a Dreamsicle in Creamsicle

  12. SOEbuc Says:

    If these jerseys are really good, they should release them now and help the economy get better sooner than later with fans buying a million jerseys.

  13. Fb unmoderated! Says:

    I vote to leave them to the moths

    I was at that game when Brantley made that hit !…and listening to the radio the day he and Big Dog and a long delay before returning to the air 🙂

  15. a-bomb Says:

    If ya can’t roll with the Orange and White, find a new team.

  16. Cobraboy Says:

    Bucs sign Suh, one-year, $8 million per Bleacher Report.

    Great news!

  17. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Little Doosh remembers going to the big sombrero back in the beginning and was always struck by how vivid those uniforms were when I was walking into the stadium.
    Joe described it well.
    They didn’t always look great on tv and the orange pants looked bad, but I’m glad to see them endure.

    I think that’s great that we can wear them a couple times a year.

  18. '79 Defense Says:

    “Those orange jerseys with the white pants on a sunny afternoon on the green Florida grass were a thing of beauty.”

    I totally agree. That orange just goes with Florida. It was a thing of beauty. For all the people who bash the original uniform, I think it was one of the best.

    ~~~~~~~~~
    HELL YES!!!!!!!!
    SUH IS GETTING SIGNED!
    And YES, 1 to 2 games a year the creamsicles as a THROW BACK,
    would be AWESOME!
  20. Mister Positive Pete Says:
    please re-vamp the winking pirate
  21. Iamabuc Says:
    I believe them creamsicle uniforms should be only worn on color rush days..who’s with me?
  22. Tampa Bay Demon Says:
    ^^ Well I definitely agree with you on it being used as a Throwback, once in awhile, with the more Super Bowl style uniforms for full time. This would be the best of all worlds!
  23. ItzOK Says:
    Itz a head scratcher to me why people want these uniforms so badly. They represent the worst of this franchise and are associated with nothing but losing. If Brady puts one of these on Father time will come down in pregame and end his career and half the team will suffer season ending injuries. Let sleeping dogs lie and never bring the curse back to life. If the new uniforms incorporate the Orange color or a modern version that may be cool. I never want to see the original uniforms worn ever again.
  24. '79 Defense Says:
    Speaking of uniforms, the Bucs site just put up player reaction to seeing the new ones for the first time. David, White and Godwin saw them. Godwin said they looked “really, really, really, clean.”
  25. Swampbuc Says:
    The Bucs only had three winning seasons in twenty one seasons of wearing those godawful washed out orange rags with the gay pirate winking at us. Let’s simply let those fade into oblivion, as they should.
  26. BigMacAttack Says:
    Just bring back the Creamsicles as the primary uniform. Orange trousers too just like Clemson.
  27. DoooshLaRue Says:
    ^^^^^^^^
    I think Munch would prefer knickers.
  28. SkBucsFan Says:
    I like them. I think we should bring them back now. Orange and pewter would be a great combo.
  29. stpetebucsfan Says:
    I’m not certain that play would automatically draw a flag because it was a shoulder to shoulder hit not a head shot…but the violence may have drawn an unnecessary roughness flag that close to OB.
    Speaking of head shots…Am I the only one here who felt sorry for Scott as his brain clearly deteriorated while he was on the radio. Lots of the old greats have some pretty severe CTE.
    Hopefully he saved his money because after being diagnosed with Alzheimers in 2018 he learned he was unable to get any money from the NFL’s concussion fund.
    He was featured in an HBO Real Sports episode “Unsettled”.
    Yeah I know Scott knew the risks…accepted them…but still it’s sad to see a guy mentally gone so young. Sometimes I feel like we would be better placed as fans in the Coliseum. Head shots are exciting…until they’re not.
  30. DaBux Says:
    If we win a SB at home with Brady, I say do it for one game in 2021:
    The Dolphins when they come here.
    Then burn the entire lot.
  31. ToesOnTheLine!!! Says:
    I remember being an 8 year old kid and seeing the Bucs on TV for the first time (likely vs the Jets or Giants). I thought the creamsickle jerseys were eye catching, I even dug the gaudy orange, red, and white color scheme. As a young kid I didn’t think anything was a bit “dandy” about a one winking eye, red skinned pirate dude with a knife in his mouth, so that was kinda cool as well. I hope they do bring them back as throwbacks for a few games every year. It was a very unique and distinctive uniform.
  32. Rod Munch Says:
    F anyone who doesn’t love the orange. The reason the Bucs wore orange was because here in FL there used to be orange trees everywhere. Literally everywhere. You’d stop on the side of the road and go pick an orange off a tree instead of stopping at 7-11 to get chips, they were that common. Now most everything around here is paved over, but that’s why we had orange. It’s a Florida color. Pewter and red is great, I was there in 97 when they revealed the new uniforms- but it’s been long enough. Return the orange and white – it was great color and everyone knew who it was.
  33. SOEbuc Says:
    F anyone that wants to get rid of the flag logo. Already seen a digital what it would look like in creamsicle and it’s awful. I would have no problem changing the flag black and the helmet black/red/or white depending on what the rest of the uniform turned out to be.
  34. SOEbuc Says:
    Rod Munch…Orange trees everywhere, huh? I’m in the wrong place I guess cus I’m surrounded by oak trees and I’m coughing up a bunch of pollen not a virus. Maybe that’s where the pewter came from,lol.
  35. CunningLinguistics Says:
    I was having a beer with Dexter Manley a few nights ago. He said he has seen the new uniforms and helmet. He indicated that he’s impressed with the clean look and the orange jerseys. He mentioned that they reminded him of when he played for the team.
  36. CunningLinguistics Says:
    Oh, one more thing. For you losers (both socially and career wise, which means 99% of you on this site), the flag on the helmet sucks. It makes no sense to have a sword, with a flag just floating there. It’s pathetic.
  37. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:
    Munch, I often disagree with you, but you’re spot on here. Orange trees were extremely prevalent 40+ years ago. Everything has been paved over and it’s sad. I had the privilege of growing up in Naples in the 1970’s. I even worked in a U-pick orange grove for awhile in high school. Spectacular time and a spectacular place it was. Now, you can have it. If I’m east of 41 in Naples, I don’t know where I am.
  38. adam from ny Says:
    it’s like eating a tub of ice cream for dinner…
    you can do it once or twice a year, but not every week…
    these unis are fire as a seasonal change of pace
  39. Jean Lafitte Says:
    No thanks …unless you are a UT fan those ugly orange uni’s don’t give the appearance of a tough football team. Might as well just wear rainbow colors. lol
  40. Darin Says:
    The color orange has been proven to raise serotonin levels in the brain. This is truth. I was a happy kid watching a losing team. I still pray they bring em back, almost daily. Do it. Do it. Every game.
  41. Mayhem41 Says:
    Amazes me how people hate on a uniform design based on the team’s winning percentage in them. The orange uni’s are sublime, period. Agree with post above, if you’re not down with Bucco Bruce and the creamsicles, then you need to find another team.
  42. Sierra048 Says:
    LOL at the people blaming the color of uniforms for the constant losing. It wasn’t the color of the uniforms, it’s what was wearing them that was the issue. Bring them back please.
  43. IMissLovie Says:
    Some of you people do not understand the purpose of alternate uniforms – The uglier the better.
  44. Buc1987 Says:
    LOVE the creamsicles!
  45. View from 132 Says:
    No idea why people like these. If they want to do throw back, wear the Tampa Bay BANDITS uniforms one game a year. Oh wait, they already took 99% of the Bandits look, for good reason.
    I’d be okay with orange if it was a darker, more serious shade (see Clemson, currently) not that tourist Hawaiian shirt nonsense faded orange of the 70s.
  46. sincethebeginning Says:
    I’m not much for commenting on fashion blogs, but I will say that I was at that game when Brantley made that hit. It almost literally happened right in front of me.
    We were sitting on that side (west) about 25 rows up within a yard of that exact hash mark. The sound was unbelievable, and we all thought Hipple might be done for good. Like, career over kind of done. It was definitely one of the hardest football hits I’ve ever been that close to in my life.
  47. $acbuc$ Says:
    The color scheme is cool. Ditch the musketeer on the helmet keep the logo we got now and it’s cookies. We the buccaneers not the musketeers! Although we should use there chant! ONE for ALL and ALL for ONE! Quarantined!
