Pumping Weights In A Pandemic

March 25th, 2020

Coronavirus impacts training.

If the offensive line of the Bucs — a constant fun talking point for fans — is getting shoved around this fall like grade school girls, you may be able to blame the corona.

Yes, the coronavirus pandemic is sweeping the world and may very well wipe out NFL OTAs and minicamps. It already has impacted how the Bucs are training their bodies.

Bucco Bruce Arians noted today that there were 26 Bucs players at One Buc Palace pumping weights last week. Now, the joint is empty because the NFL ordered all team facilities shuttered until further notice.

Yes, because of the corona.

Arians called the shutdown of One Buc Palace “a huge problem” for guys working with weights, especially guys on a program. And with gyms across the land also being locked up because of the pandemic. Arians noted the Bucs (and likely other NFL teams) are having to scramble to help players, especially guys on specific programs.

Some players have their own gyms set up at home, Arians said, so the Bucs are hoping some players could get together with a teammate who has such a gym and work out there.

Yeah going to be a challenge for everyone across the league really and across positions. Players with bad self discipline may struggle.

  2. No Risk It No Biscuit Says:

Nice try. Suh is back baby!!!

  3. gofortheface30 Says:

Doubt it will be a problem, can still drive and have access to private facilities. Guys that love to lift (like this jabroni) will find a way to get it in, especially guys that love to lift and get paid to do so. No one is gnna be skimping out on deads and squats. If you don’t stay strong you get killed..

    i agree…

players with poor discipline will struggle…..

imo, the great thing about this offseason is everyones “lazer focus”as brady would say, because of brady…..

no one wants to be “that guy” who didnt show up in shape ready to roll…..

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  5. JimmyJack Says:

Gogortheface……That sound all well and good when you say no one is skimping out on training…….But somehow I highly doubt that. At the end of the day these players are flesh skinned people and don’t all share the same work ethic or commitment. Some of them don’t like work just like in another other industry you could possibly think of. Some of them will be using this virus as an excuse to chill and relax. They’ll catch back up later when it’s demanded of them.

  6. Guzzie Says:

Hey Joe’s, what about trading Donovan Smith for Trent Williams probably have to give up 3rd too but money wise we’d only have to pay Williams a couple more million, Skins get an ok tackle with 2 years control

  7. Ndog Says:

    Oh boy the excuses begin.

  8. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

These dudes definitely are working out at their houses and private places like TB12; probably not as intense with some things but def working out. N Pup, no excuses this year is going to be one of the best in bucs history get on board & be a bucs fan not a backup nfl qb fan.

  9. TampaBayBucs55 Says:

Same situation for all NFL players. Don’t want to hear the excuses.

  10. Dom>Licht Says:

Has Corona been around 5 years now? Was wondering what was causing bad OL play.

  11. Bucsfan951 Says:

NPUPPY it’s not an excuse… that would be fact. I think you have fact and opinion backwards in your head. You spew opinions, not facts. See the difference?

  12. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Like they don’t already have some sort of gym set up at their residence.

Arians sounded as if he’s very comfortable with Smith as his left tackle.

  14. Swampbuc Says:

Every team is suffering the same restrictions. It’s not like only the Bucs aren’t allowed to lift weights.

this is a problem for all players, not just the bucs.

Quit doing weights two weeks ago, when I heard corona can live for days on a hard metal surface. Sure you can wipe the bar down…but almost impossible to get into every knurl on the bar. Unless you have your own set, and even then, must be extra careful without a large spotter person to help if needed.

  19. mark2001 Says:

If I had the money most of these players have, I would drop 50 or 100 grand into some nice equipment at home, and forget the weights. I like weights, but with some top quality equipment, should be able to stay in good shape and less inherent danger. Do the weights at the facility when you can get back there.

Of course when you get Bruce’s age and mine, you aren’t working with the kind of weights you youngsters do. And the equipment has come a long way in the last couple decades.

  20. unbelievable Says:

Uh, any one of these guys could easily get some weights and equipment at home.

I’ve got an entire home setup with olympic sets of weights and bars, a half rack, pull-up and dip bars, TRX straps, etc., that cost me less than $600 total to put together.

No excuse for pro athletes to not be working out from home.

    JJ

I certainly take your point but I’m the blog optimist. The guys are probably like us and getting stir crazy. I WISH I could work out with weights. I’ve gone online and found some great home workouts largely using your own body weight and a gallon jug with the handles.

Now they know Brady will be behind them is another major motivator.

I think lifting weights is one of the most exciting things you can do while your bored out of your gourd sheltering in place.

@JOE I absolutely appreciate what you’ve done during the virus. You haven’t passed along any BS and you HAVE done a great job of putting up plenty of stories for we stir crazy JBFers.

THANKS! And sorry to all for my long posts but after awhile there is only so much to do. JBF has become a nice diversion to our daily dose of gloom.

  23. mark2001 Says:

Please Patrick…I was never an apologist…but sad to think someone told him that his knee surgery and the Lasik was the issue that stood in the way of his future employment. It wasn’t.

  24. mark2001 Says:

I believe he has outgrown some of his earlier issues. As I said..I believe he is sincere and is trying his best. I honestly hope it works out for hims somewhere. And as he knows, God has a plan for him.
