Gerald McCoy Talks Tom Brady, Lavonte David & Jameis Winston

March 20th, 2020

Lavonte David is on the mind of Gerald McCoy

Guess who never missed watching a Buccaneers game during the 2019 season and has firm opinions on the state of the Bucs?

It’s polarizing six-time Buccaneers Pro Bowler, Gerald McCoy.

McCoy was hit with the money question on SiriusXM NFL Radio this week: Whaddya think of Tom Brady landing with your old team?

Laughter was McCoy’s reply followed by a reminder that he plays for the Cowboys. But McCoy said, “I hope it works out” for the Bucs and explained his thoughts.

“Listen, one of my closet friends on this earth is Lavonte David. Neither one of us has ever been in the playoffs,” McCoy said. “We’ve had winning seasons, but I consider a winning season making the playoffs. … So, you know, I just wish him all the best and I want [the Brady signing] to work out for him more than anybody. You know I have no ill-will toward the Buccaneers organization. I actually watched them every week last season. … I rooted for them.

“I grew up a Buccaneers fan. I was blessed enough to play there for nine years. My heart is always going to be, you know, with Tampa. So I wish them all the best, man. I hope it works out, most importantly for Lavonte.

‘I just really believe he’s a very underrated player. I think he’s a top-5 linebacker in this league that doesn’t get enough recognition. And he’s very talented and he deserves to win. And so I’m just praying and hoping it works out for him. And if we meet them in the playoffs, they’re going to have to go home.”

Asked about the future of America’s former quarterback, Jameis Winston, McCoy said he is touch with Jameis but doesn’t know what his future holds — other than good things.

“I don’t know what Jameis is going to do, but he’s in great spirits. I spoke with him,” McCoy said. “You know, Jameis is highly motivated. He’s one of the hardest workers I’ve every been around. He’s not really affected of fazed much by what people say or do. He just believes in himself and is extremely confident in his abilities. You know, wherever he lands, I’m sure he’s going to make the most of it. And I wish him the best, man.

“I’m always a Jameis fan. We’re close with their family, and I’m always going to look out for him. He’s like my little brother. When he got drafted to Tampa, you know, I made a promise to his parents that I’ll always look out for him. So I’m going to continue to do that. And I’m pretty sure he’s going to land on his feet. And wherever he goes, I personally, Gerald, truly believe that he’s going to dominate. So, wherever he goes, man, they’re getting a great one.”

What great fun it would be if the Bucs met the Cowboys and McCoy in the playoffs in Tampa.

Joe’s glad McCoy brought up Lavonte David. This year David will be showcased in at least 5 national television games. The Brady acquisition might be the best thing that ever happened for David’s recognition and appreciation.

Great point on #54 getting more national attention.

  2. CPN Says:

Lavonte may just get the credit he deserves.

Hopefully, McCoy has a good season with the Cowboys though.

  3. gotbbucs Says:

Washing machines work hard too, doesn’t mean they’re capable of being franchise QB’s.

  4. BucEmUp Says:

All of the guys that shoukd make pro bowls will….furrher supporting that pro bowls are a popularity vote and a load of b.s

  5. Kesley Says:

    Please go away loser…

  6. Buc You Says:

McCoy was a great player for us, but man his personality and general demeanor softened the culture of the team and collectively set the franchise back. Football is a game of attitude, which he had none of. He had personality and football moves, but not the edge that was needed to really lead a team. I do think he set David and Winston back just by being himself. Maybe Brady can add an edge back to this franchise, so long as he still has the fire and isn’t just here to collect a fat free agent paycheck like so many others have in the past.

  7. SB Says:

“What great fun it would be if the Bucs met the Cowboys and McCoy in the playoffs in Tampa.”

Even greater if Billacheat scoops up JW and we see a Tom Brady vs. Jameis Winston Superbowl IN TAMPA!!!

  8. donuts Says:

No other sports journalist calls Winston “Americas QB”. Hurts your credibility.

  9. Tye Says:

reminds me of guys that can’t stop talking about their ex-wife…
starter jobs drying up, 2nd string jobs getting filled, if no one wants him at 3rd sting and the XFL is done for now, the Bucs throw away may be done at qb and on to the next phase of his life… maybe baseball, who knows…
he’s another forgettable qb in Bucs history they are never going to regret releasing.. they will only hope for better in the future, not live in the past.. that’s just bitter fans!

I just found this on the bucs wire 🙂 >>> https://bucswire.usatoday.com/2020/03/20/history-shows-that-tom-brady-plus-the-bucs-playoff-drought-could-be-a-recipe-for-a-super-bowl-win/

  11. Jean Lafitte Says:

I hope we play Dallas this season too. We’ll just run right through the gap he vacates. He sucks at stopping the run. McIcecream literally had one solo tackle a game in 2018 with 16 tackles.

Mr. “I’m a 3 tech only” happened to play spot duty last season all over the d-line.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

America’s former Quarterback……..just can’t let it go……somehow that seems to be very sarcastic now…..almost cruel…..just wrong.

  13. Bird Says:

    Donuts

Dont you know Brady is just an older Jameis winston
Funniest thing i have heard in a while

    Jameis has three nicknames here…

Tom Brady , the best qb of all time, apparently has not earned one yet here
    😂

  14. Ship Thief Says:

    Yes!
    People are gonna notice!
Our LB core is absolutely bad a$$!
    Inside and out!
    No doubt!

  15. Ship Thief Says:

All 4 of our starters at LB are complete monsters!
    Absolutely incredible lineup there!

  16. FortMyersDave Says:

I hope things work out for McCoy. Too bad Bucs drew the Giants from the East so I guess Dallas will be playing the ATL this year so I hope 93 has a good game vs Koetter’s O. McCoy simply was not a fit in Tampa, he never had the persona of a Sapp or the talent of a LeRoy Selmon so he fell gar short of expectations just like Jameis.

  17. Swampbuc Says:

Suh is better for the Bucs. McCoy is a really nice guy. He’ll get released after one year in Dallas.

  18. Tampabuscsbro Says:

soooooooo Joe is crying for a running back but isn’t it concerning we haven’t signed a safety yet. I guess we could auction off A LOT of our future to trade back up into the first round to snag Delpit/Mckinney

  19. Kord Says:

Dude was a class act, dude disrupted plays at times, best of luck in Dallas till we destroy them in the playoffs, if they make it

  20. Bigmike36 Says:

Saints fan here. Congrats bucs on getting brady and having a heck of a good free agency. You can almost book that both of our teams will make the playoffs next year because the whole world would love to see a brees and brady playoff game

  21. adam from ny Says:

waiting on the bobby fenton podcast like a frothy mouthed scoundrel over here…

bobby…man…get that brady podcast up now holmes !

    🙂

  22. James Walker Says:

Jameis will join the list of greats who played in Tampa, but won a SB elsewhere.

  23. Buc_You-2 Says:

Bigmike36 Thanks for not being a D we need more fans around the league who don’t just throw around insults all day. That being said Who dat vs. the Buc nation gonna be the best rivalry in the league this year imo. Go Bucs!

  24. TBUC North Carolina Says:

If Winston wins a Super Bowl elsewhere, that team will win it because he didn’t touch the field!

  25. Guttasouff Says:

Tom Brady is just a name know no arm can’t run. Get ready for two years of dink and dunk plays. The NFC South has players that get there. Wonder who gets tossed under the bus when terrible Tom. Can’t pull out a win. Bill B wasn’t trying to get rid of him for nothing the last for years.

  26. Eric Says:

This organization lacks foresight at best you get a 3 year run with Brady and its SB or Bust make no mistake! But after 3 years we will be right back in the same spot unless the team get a Young QB who can play once TB retires or leaves via FA! The Bucs are going to regrets this move long term and the Saints are going to have JW for the rest of his career it will be 10-12 years of JW kicking the Bucs arse!

  27. Matt Says:

Betaboy McCoy just can’t let go can he? He has been the highest paid player on the team since say 1 without having to earn it and fell into the habit of mediocrity. He will fit right in with the mediocre Cowboys. Watch the Cowboys run stopping ability plummet, the defensive neutral zone infractions to soar And watch McCoy rack up 6-10 meaningless sacks in garbage time. Watch McCoy be McCoy.

  28. '79 Defense Says:

“I grew up a Buccaneers fan. I was blessed enough to play there for nine years. My heart is always going to be, you know, with Tampa. So I wish them all the best, man.”

Yet some (some) people love to bash the guy and call him names– of course all stuff they only say through sites like this and that they would never have the guts to say to McCoy’s face.

What losers. You can be certain they aren’t leaders at whatever job they have, not looked up to, and not worthy of respect.

  29. ATrain Says:

Wow the Love for McCoy is huge here. WHY because he is nice

I bet McCoy will run for political office he is so PC

  30. mark2001 Says:

Bellicheat doesn’t want Jameis…if he did, he could have scooped him up at any time. Frankly, the cheat is anal. And those mindblank interceptions would absolutely drive him crazy. It would take a decade off his coaching career.

  31. mark2001 Says:

Eric…time to get over it…JW is gone. Wish him well. And you and I don’t know who we might draft and groom for a couple years behind Brady. That is how Rodgers got his start… clipboard holder for two years, and a work in progress to improve his mechanics and teach him the offense.

  32. orlbucfan Says:

Brady better be mentoring a young QB down here and making his money. He’s long in the tooth, and the defenses will be gunning for him. LVD is one of the great Bucs defensive players, and deserves to be in the HOF. Wish GMC was here.

  33. stpetebucsfan Says:

Some perspective on all this future baloney. It’s the NFL….short careers and thanks to the cap short windows to win it all.

BB is a defensive genius…HC…not so much. Again …he was a loser five of his first six years in the league…year seven he starts Brady and the rest is history.

Again not saying Brady would have six rings without BB’s defense to back up his offense but I am saying BB’s defense didn’t win before Brady…IMHO he needed Brady far more than Brady needed him. Time will tell.

  34. bucsfaninoregon Says:

I have to smile when I read the posts here about how great it will be to face Dallas in the playoffs and/or the SB. I would certainly be equally hyped ….except. Do any of you guys in Florida realize what’s going on in the rest of the country?
I’m on the west coast and am semi-isolated as well almost the rest of the west coast. The panic is starting in NY over what they see coming in a week. Italy? Iran? Or S. Korea where they seem to have a handle on it.
Have you guys heard of the start of baseball yet? How about NFL training camp?
I wonder how they are going to pull it off in September when there still is no vaccine and it is game time at the RayJay. How do you hold a huddle when the LG gets sick? In front of empty stands?
Hey, I want Brady to take us to the promised land and it is great to imagine great things in these times. Maybe it will happen someday- -I just don’t think it’s going to happen on normal schedule.

  35. Slugglife go straight to moderation Says:

The object of football is to get first downs until you hit the end zone. I don’t care if it’s an 80 yard bomb or a 1 yard run.

If the dink and dunk passes keep the chain moving, then dink and dunk all day. Whatever gets us the win.

  36. Slugglife go straight to moderation Says:

Eric- the Bucs aren’t going to regret anything. JW is not on the team at this point so you have no point. The draft is coming up, we will likely see a young QB drafted, or maybe Ryan Griffin benefits greatly from working with Brady.

Speaking in absolutes is absolutely ridiculous. Just calm down.

  37. Mike Johnson Says:

Luv McCoy. He always take the..High Road. Even when Buc fans bash him consistently…like losers do. He does not come back at them angrily. That’s the sign of a class guy. He’s right about David and Jameis. Good luck with them Cowgirls Gerald.

  38. Natron Says:

The fact that McCoy walked out of Tampa with $100 million in earnings is nothing short of larceny….he can play with his batman dolls in Dallas now
