Burner On The Market

March 6th, 2020

San Francisco speedster available for trade.

Bruce Arians always likes to have a wide receiver who can blaze through a secondary for the long ball. Take the top off.

(There is a joke in there somewhere about one of those clothing-optional joints that pepper Dale Mabry Highway near the Den of Depression.)

This past year that was Breshad Perriman, who didn’t play so well until about November and got better and better as time went on.

Perriman, a former first-round pick, has serious wheels and the final weeks of the season Perriman played so well he’s going to get paid later this month.

Good for him; bad for the Bucs.

Perriman was on a one-year contract and you just didn’t get the sense from Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians and Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht when they spoke last week on and off the record in Indianapolis that they had any interest in a bidding war for Perriman.

Enter Marquise Goodwin of the 49ers. Per Ian Rapoport, it seems 49ers shot-caller John Lynch is shopping him. He’s under contract through 2021.

Why should the Bucs be interested? Well, Perriman can flat out fly, as he posted a 4.19 in his 40 when he entered the draft. Goodwin was just a hair behind him at 4.27. Last year Perriman played for $4 million. Goodwin? He’s under contract for $5 million the next two years. Not a huge difference.

Now Joe is sure the Bucs hope — there’s that ugly word again — that Scotty Miller could replace Perriman. Joe’s not ready to go there yet. Miller made progress last year but was often hurt. Joe would like to see consistency from the Bowling Green product before handing him a starting job.

Just keep Perriman if you’re inclined to pay that much for a 3rd WR……my thoughts are to draft one……
WRs & RBs…..don’t pay too much…..we will already have about $30 mil wrapped up in Evans & Godwin.

  2. Craig Says:

If Jameis is back it would be interesting an a DJax way. Jameis can’t track fast receivers. He would be wasted.

Remember, Fitz could hit DJax in stride. The Jameis got back in and that was the end of that. Jameis just could not hit him with a pass. The couple he did catch he had to stand around and wait for.

  3. Craig Says:

    In a DJax way

  4. Elita Vita Says:

Well if you get another WR “burner” better make sure you get a qb that has the ability to sling the ball downfield.

  5. Hamsadwitchtime Says:

Yea, Winston wasn’t connecting with perriman.. lol

  6. Rayjay1122 Says:

So Goodwin and Godwin on the same team? That should be fun for broadcasters.

  7. a-bomb Says:

JW didn’t seem to have a problem “tracking” Perriman this year. Hmmm…maybe he problem was cancer DJax and his route running.

  8. Joe in Michigan Says:

I don’t remember this guy doing anything against us the first game of 2019, and our defense wasn’t good at that time. No thank you.

  9. LordCornelius Says:

Would rather just draft a guy in the 4th or 5th as this draft is super deep at WR and the NFL in general is deep at WR…

  10. 813bucboi Says:

    watson?….

didnt he run a fast 40?…..

    imo, develop miller and watson….

the only FA we should be after is conklin!!!!!!(along with all our defensive FAs)

    GO BUCS!!!!

  11. JimmyJack Says:

I’m with Lord Corn on this. I keep hearing how deep this draft is for WR. Why not draft somebody?

Why trade for a WR3 when we are not desperate?

Plus if you draft somebody you save some cash. If you’re so concerned about losing Perriman just go back to the well again. Let your scouts find another unwanted cheap player who can perform……Just like they did with Perriman……..Meanwhile you still draft one you have another look at Scotty and Watson and you bring in some campmeat to see if you can find a dymond.

^^^If you do all that and can’t find a WR3 then your probably pretty lousy at your job.

WR3 is a hole but much much a concern for me especially with them saying g how good this draft is.

  12. JimmyJack Says:

813 Conklin is gonna demand 15M. You can sign him and all our defensive FAs. But you just ran out of money for a QB. Now we are stuck with a rookie in your plan…..oops.

  13. MadMax Says:

Why not do an article on WR (possible TE) Chase Claypool? Much cheaper too 🙂

He’s also a burner, 4.42 and an Evans clone. If we play this the right way with trade downs, we could land him in the 2nd (with our trade capital after drafting Clyde/Dobbins with our original 2nd)

ME13 on one side, Claypool on the other, Godwin in the slot….Lordy!

  14. miken Says:

When a guy under contractis good and up for trade…he’sabout to be cut. Not sure he will fetch more than a 6round pick bc he is owed so much.

  15. stpetebucsfan Says:

This is pretty far down the list for me. Miller has 4.3 speed…Watson 4.4 neither are slow. Perriman is a bit of a freak spead wise but Miller showed the ability to get behind defenses last year. Only question is durability.

And so we roll the dice and hope our young guys come through..or with the overload of great receivers this year we can find a burner in the UDFA group.
We’ve had pretty good luck there.

Rather gamble there than on Dotson at RT…or Barber at RB

  16. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

I keep banging the drum to trade back in the 1st so they can draft a stud OT like Josh Jones, then a pass rusher like Gross-Matos and maybe a beast WR like Claypool in the 2nd.

Maybe, Cam Akers falls to the 3rd round or you grab AJ Dillon as that bruiser RB.

  17. Rod Munch Says:

Goodwin would make a good 3rd WR, and then the Bucs draft another guy in the 2nd or 3rd round so they actually have depth – unlike this last year when was Perriman trust into the #1 role and there was nothing but absolute beyond him on the field at WR. Watson was so bad he shouldn’t even be back, and can anyone even name the other WRs on the team at the end of the year? The Bucs have to get depth in case of injury – and Perriman, I’d assume, will be much too expensive to keep. Goodwin seems like a good fit and he’s been productive, at times, in his career. If they can get him for like a 5th or 6th, they should do it. Although have Goodwin and Godwin on the same team will lead to a lot of typos and people being called morons.

  18. WhatTheBuc Says:

Am I the only one to dispute Perriman running a 4.19? The fastest modern combine time is John Ross at 4.22. Goodwin won the 40 yard dash contest that supposedly had a $1 million prize. Goodwin is an Olympian so he’s no joke. If you can get a WR3 for 5 million, it’s not a big investment. TampabayBF, I’m not sure where you are getting your numbers but Evan’s and Godwin combined don’t make 20 million combined this season. Perriman will price himself out of Tampa and good for him for playing well. Scottie Miller was clocked in the 4.2s by some scouts. Imagine having him and Goodwin on the field at the same time.

  19. WhatTheBuc Says:

Ghost, I agree Jones is a stud. There is a YouTube video of him vs. Oklahoma and he is just rag dolling people. He pancakes #9 Murry who is supposed to be a 1st round pick. If we target a pass rusher late in the 1st it should be Zack Baun out of Wisconsin. He is the 2nd best pass rusher and he’s physically Shaq Barretts clone.

  20. D1 Says:

    Whatthebuc,

I believe that 40x . Handheld timer. 4.19 and 4.29 is guesswork unless it’s laser timed. So yeah , I believe it.

Sidenote, 4.29 or 4.19 is remarkable in itself. But considering how big perriman is, it’s extraordinary. That’s why he went 1st round. Just saying.

  21. catcard202 Says:

W/ this draft class of WR’s, I wouldn’t be looking to trade for any WR’s.
I might actually look to move one to get more picks in 2020, to load up on cheap rookie contracts.

Every proven asset on the roster has to be weighed against potential return…If you could get a 1st Rd pick for Mike Evans, knowing that you need to extend Godwin , this would be the yr to move him.

(& I love Mike Evans – but this WR class is very very talented & deep…It has a ton of Rd1-Rd3 grade players.)

  22. gofortheface30 Says:

MADMAX – NIIIIICE work thinking outside of FSU and SEC like most of the commenters on here. Claypool is a specimen, dont know if he’s a Mike Evans clone per se because he is much more chisled/jacked (evans honestly has kind of a soft doughy body, neither here nor there though) in any case a freaking 40 inch vert at 232 pounds and 6-5, really good deep threat at Notre Dame – would not hurt my feelings if that was the guy we pick up in round 2 or 3.

  23. MadMax Says:

^ thank you Sir! I try….been here a minute and have a rep of spotlighting great draft picks.

If we use our #14 on Wirfs or Brown, then im completely torn between Claypool/Clyde/Dobbins in the 2nd….but if we trade out of the first, we could land two of them.

  24. Joe Says:

So Goodwin and Godwin on the same team? That should be fun for broadcasters.

    Not just broadcasters. 🙁

  25. George Rauh Says:

Miller will improve this year. Daft a day 3 WR and develop them. Can’t spend a lot of money on 3rd and 4th WR. The Bucs are going to have over 30 million committed to the WR position in the near future.

  26. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

Hard pass. I looked at his stats just the other day. He has been in the NFL for many years. Was drafted by BUF. Goodwin drops almost as many passes as he catches

  27. BucHead588 Says:

Yes yes yes a great Perriman replacement i want Perriman to stay but I feel like He played his way out but I hope he stays this offense was great last year an had plenty room for improvements If very many can play a whole year like he did the last six or seven games I think it was this offense will be even better and if the box add another running back to go with Rojo boxer a lot closer than you think defenses way improved

If we lose Jameis and can’t move up to get Justin Herbert in the first round, I would also be happy with FIU’s star QB, James Morgan, from the East West Shrine Game who can be gotten from the 4th to the 5th round. He is tall and cool in the pocket and a rocket for an arm and is also mobile. I would get him even if BA brings in a veteran QB to start. Otherwise, Jones would be fine at OT and we could get him trading down in the first round and pick up an extra second pick. Trade off Howard for another second pick. Get a mobile Safety, Kyle Dugger, with the first second pick, OG Shane Lemieux, OR, with the second one, and with the third one DT Davon Hamilton, Ohio State, 327 lbs. ,
In the third round take the Boston College Big Back, A.J. Dillon, and in the fourth round pick up Morgan the FIU QB, and with the other 4th pick take Kyle Markway, best blocking TE, and In the 5th round RB Lamical Perine, 218 lbs., to replace Barber. In the sixth round an excellent special teams player, WR Michael Swain, with great hands and quickness who can also run back kicks and can play slot receiver in reserve. As an Undrafted player sign Michigan OT Jon Runyon to keep as a reserve OG.
