Bucs Sign A Tackle

March 20th, 2020

New Bucs OT Joe Haeg.

UPDATED 10:41 a.m. – Looks like someone who otherwise would normally work at One Buc Palace finally got internet access.

Bucs fans have been hollering for a tackle, specifically to replace free agent right tackle Demar Dotson. It appears they may already have.

Just minutes after making the signing of Tom Brady official, word comes through Adam Schefter of BSPN that the Bucs have signed a tackle. He is Joe Haeg, formerly of the Colts.

Haeg is a four-year veteran and was a two-year starter prior to 2018.

Like Dotson, Haeg is a large man, 6-6, 298.

Haeg was a backup in 2018 and 2019, and he formerly played for booted Colts offensive line coach Joe Gilbert, currently the Bucs O-line coach. The 2016 fifth-round pick of the Colts also has spent time at right guard.

  1. King C Says:

What’s crazy is Joe has done such a good job of ruining the “America’s Quarterback” nickname now that we have the real America’s Quarterback we don’t know what to call him. TB12 just doesn’t sound a good

  2. Buc_You-2 Says:

Ok it’s a start. Gives a little flexibility now ahh what having a “REAL” QB can do for a team so refreshing.

  3. SirClicksAlot Says:

Nice! This should be an upgrade in run blocking at least. I’m most excited because this gives us flexibility in the draft to go DL in the 1st if we miss out on the top tackles.

  4. Tbbucs3 Says:

America’s Quarterback will always be Jameis Winston whether you like it or not.

  5. Dewey Selmon Says:

15 games played for 4 years, must me a decent/reliable player to start that many games.

  6. RI Bucs Fan Says:

What about everything else we need? RB…S…DL/SUH!?

  7. Dave Says:

America’s Turnover Machine is the next Colin Kap, no one wants him, he sucks,,, Jameis will be working at Publix in teh crab leg seafood department soon

  8. BucJames1776 Says:

RE: America’s QB Jameis: I hear Publix is hiring in the seafood section. The new problem is who would even want Jameis as a backup? Does anyone see him dialing down to be a backup and not disrupting a locker room? Oh yeah…and tell his agent backups don’t make $35M

  9. Marine Buc Says:

This guy can play both Tackle and Guard. I love versatile depth players. Great move!

    Go Bucs!

Yes, pretty solid signing – good player, slides Demar to backup which as a commenter posted above, gives us a little breathing room for draft. I still say go after Trent Williams, maybe sign a guard like a Ron Leary and then they’d be pretty well set at o-line

  11. ManzielMadness Says:

Did a quick google search… looks like he can play all 5 spots on OL… would not be surprised if that’s reason why we went after him.. looks to be solid depth… id still look at a RT high in the draft

  12. stpetebucsfan Says:

This could certainly alter our draft strategy. Although I would still jump through hoops to get one of those giant tackles in the draft…even if we had to give up that compensatory draft pick to move up.

But if the team feels this guy is the answer and depth can be had much later…really opens up the first round…big DL? QB?

Or perhaps trade down for multiple picks and add a safety into the mix…get another OT and DL and QB.

It seems opportunities are beginning to grow for the Bucs.

D.R. Now it’s your job to bring me back to earth. LMAO

I’ve become lost in cap minutia. So do Allen and Nassib’s salaries get added back in? Perriman won’t be far behind. How about some contract extensions to gain cap space? Possibility? What frightens me is that if we open camps early enough for Brady to synch up with ME and CG can you imagine CG’s value after a year with Brady? He might put up great numbers and break the bank next year.

BA is on the record talking about everybody needing to eat and only one pot to feed them so clearly they are well aware of cap restraints so it’s back to BA I trust I guess.

  13. Robert Says:

    looks like a NE lineman!

4 yr vet, durable, good size, sound good!

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We can call him “Lord of the Rings”

  15. Go Bucs 72 Says:

^^^^Winston is no longer on the team, move on.^^^^^

  16. Delaware Bucs Fan Says:

Don’t be silly now…..Tampa Tom (Brady) is what we’re using, right?

No idea how this tackle plays, but I’d imagine he can at the least compete with Dot.

  17. German Buc Says:

@King: Just call him ‘GOAT’. It is what he is!

  18. Swampbuc Says:

    Good signing. FInally.

  19. Pewter power Says:

No need to take shots at Winston, we have a new quarterback so get it out of your system already. Here tried it wasn’t good enough we can all move on please and thank you

  20. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

‘Haeg is a four-year veteran and other than 2018, he has started at least 15 games every year.’

This is absolutely not true. He started no games last year and only 6 the year before.

  21. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Delaware Bucs Fan Says:
“No idea how this tackle plays, but I’d imagine he can at the least compete with Dot.”

Dotson is no longer with the team.

  22. tickrdr Says:

I hope this does alter draft strategy.
    Justin Herbert, please.
Move up in the draft, if necessary.
Let our QB of the future marinate on the bench to watch and learn from the greatest. JMHO.

    tickrdr

  23. PuertoRicanBucFan Says:

Nice depth piece and will also provide competition for whatever rookie or rookies we bring in

  24. Evolvingbucsfan Says:

StPete, Allen had a one year contract, no cap relief, I beleive the same for Nassib

Licht is a big fan of the one year contracts

  25. John Sinclear Says:

Why not just call him Tom Brady? Worked for his Mom. And, re-name the Bucs as The Brady Bunch??

  26. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Now my bet is drafting a replacement for Suh in round 1.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Per PFT:
‘Friday morning has brought word of one new arrival, but the name doesn’t quite fit the impression of a player who was declining other offers in order to join up with Brady.’

This guy will be lucky to make the final roster.

  28. Pryda...Sec147 Says:

Jameis is coming back to Bucs to backup Brady

  29. Sarasota Garey Says:

    Depth piece

  30. SOEbuc Says:

This is a good depth move. Can play tackle and guard and has experience with oline coach. Nice sign.

  31. 541BucsFan Says:

He’s a backup that can play multiple positions. Just guessing we will sign another vet that can play RT/RG for the left side.

  32. Tampabaybucfan Says:

This signing could be a signal that things aren’t going well with Suh……and that the Bucs may need to draft a DT in round 1 to replace him….

Perhaps not…..we don’t know the money yet so this may simply be a backup plan.

Sign Suh…..and I would be happy if that was the end of our FA acquisitions.

  33. AwShbucs Says:

    #ShouldaSignedConklin

  34. rrsrq Says:

Are we so blinded by Brady that we say finally to a tackle that might not even make the team. Get us a safety or RB that will be able to contribute.

  35. DB55 Says:

Bucs don’t need to sign a RT they have the 7th best oline in the league Brady just holds the ball too.

  36. rrsrq Says:

Just because he played for the o-line coach before, remember the Cards RB that played for Arians that we signed, me either…

  37. Bucsfan951 Says:

Yes BONZAI, they’re gonna pay him 2.3 million just to be cut smh 🤦🏻‍♂️

  38. LordCornelius Says:

Much needed versatile depth signing. Our depth sucked last year.

I’d still be OK with us Re-signing Dot & drafting an OT R1, then drafting an OG R4. Then we’d have legit starters and at least 3 decent depth options to go the distance.

RB/DT/Edge with R2-R3-other R4 pick in BPA order.

  39. MarineBucsFan Says:

I think this is nothing more than a depth move, I don’t think he is here to be the starter. It’s a 42/43 year old Tom Brady!! Need a proven guy or one of the top 4 beasts in this draft.

  40. Jean Lafitte Says:

Licht should kick the tires on Shaq’s ex teammate DL Shelby Harris to replace Suh or play in the rotation.

    NFL.com says about Shelby Harris

Denver’s most disruptive defensive lineman two years in a row, Harris has gradually grown from afterthought to super sub to semi-beast.

  41. Stevebobucsfan Says:

Same here. Good depth signing then you never know, could end up as a starter. And people let’s leave Jameis out of this he’s gone now Jameis will be playing in the NFL next year like it or not. If you hate Jameis that much take it elsewhere as a Bucs fan I don’t want to hear all this negative crap just want to talk about the draft , playoffs, Super Bowl and hope the state of FL gets this virus thing under control

  42. Jean Lafitte Says:

Joe Haeg is almost identical in every measurement to Alex Cappa

  43. Miketb19 Says:

Haeg is a good depth player will probably be our main swing tackle when we go to those Jumbo formations but we really needed to upgrade the oline depth and this guy can play every position but Center so good start it’ll be interesting to see who else we get over the weekend

  44. catcard202 Says:

This is a really good signing. I have to commend the FO on this one.

Haeg was a STUD at NDSU / 2x FCS AA….Nice swing G/T since entering the NFL….Plays the game the right way…Solid depth piece, even if he doesn’t win a starting job in camp.

Still need to draft a OT before Day3.

  45. Hethrew 30 Says:

We will see FA signings come in pretty short order now that Brady has been announced. They have been in works but you announce new guys until the main new guy, TB12, is held up. I figured this OT. Expect RB and third WR next. Will round it out with Suh in a few days.

  46. Defense Rules Says:

@Bonzai … “Dotson is no longer with the team.” Bonzai, please stop interjecting facts into the discussion. You’ll hurt somebody’s feelings if you continue doing that.

@Miketb19 … “Haeg is a good depth player”. That’s it. Bucs desperately NEED better depth, but if Haeg was grounded after 2 years of starting with the Colts, chances are he won’t be a starter for protecting Brady. Besides that, 298 lbs is awfully light to be going against some of the DLine beasts we’re seeing nowadays. Bucs need to draft one of the Top-4 tackles if they’re there at #14 (Wirfs, Thomas, Becton, Wills).

  47. mark2001 Says:

Please…let’s all just forget the America’s QB thing like it is the name of an ex-wife. This is the only place where it had traction…if you said that in Chicago or Green Bay regarding Jameis, they would laugh you out of town. Jameis Winston Americas QB…RIP.

  48. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

“We can call him “Lord of the Rings”

    Like it!

  49. TexBuc Says:

Trade down so we can add some depth of this deep OL and WR class in addition to adding a RB and DL.

  50. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

    Remember Ocho Cinco?

    How about Ocho Ringos?

    Or Ringo Starr?

  51. WestChap Says:

I want a Donovan for Williams swap with Washington… although I’m not sure how high Williams new contract demands would be. I do not want Lord of the Rings getting broken by one of those plays Donovan takes off every game.

  52. adam from ny Says:

son of sid haig…from the devils rejects 🙂

  53. PuertoRicanBucFan Says:

Donovan Smith had his best year in 2019 he will be better in 2020. Haeg is really good depth, better than anything we just let off of our roster. Now we need to sign another depth oiece for the OL and go get a tackle and a guard in the draft. Dont forget part of the new CBA is that you have to carry 8 lineman on game day so you cant have enough. Go get Duke Johnson to match with Rojo and restructure a couple contracts and get us a veteran safety to patrol the middle like Eric Reid and we are there. Forget Suh we draft Kinlaw in the 1st and a tackle and guard in the 2nd and 3rd. Maybe even package a couple 4ths to get back into the 3rd if theres a RB left on the board we like. Omg the possibilities. LETSSSSS GOOOOOO

  54. TOM Says:

Good signing. Also glad to see Minter coming back. Played really well in White’s absence last year.

  55. Jeff of George 101 Says:

How about North America’s Quarterback ?? As in Montreal Alluoetts ,Winnipeg Blue Bombers?… 13 men is 2 more receivers BUT also 2 more defenders ..Lets hope Jameis1of1 has a passport …
