Arians Said Bucs Needed A Leader

March 25th, 2020

Locker room a focus.

A well-rested looking Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians was skyping with BSPN yesterday. And he had very interesting remarks.

For the first time (with the exception of his brief comments yesterday at Tom Brady’s conference call) since the Bucs flipped quarterbacks, Arians spoke on national TV.

Arians appeared on NFL Live, seen on BSPN weekdays. And while Arians did not mention former Bucs quarterback, Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, what Arians had to say about Brady raised Joe’s antennae.

“We needed to have a leader and that’s what excited me the most,” Arians said about bringing in Brady. The Bucs needed to “have a leader come in here that the guys know is a winner and has done it and that they will follow him.”

But didn’t the Bucs just let go of a natural-born leader? A guy that inspires even Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht? “Yes, he’s the best leader I think I’ve ever been around,” Licht said of Jameis on Hard Knocks in 2017.

Apparently Jameis’ over-the-top schtick wore thin.

Joe wrote in the summer of 2018 after the NFL suspended Jameis for the first three games of the year that Jameis was no leader. Why is that? A leader doesn’t pull stunts like the Uber hassle and then try to hide it from his employer, his coaches and his teammates.

Joe was told by a third-party that a handful of offensive players lost respect for Jameis if not tuned him out completely after he shat on the team with his suspension.

Combined with the picks and the losing, Joe can understand how some of Jameis’ teammates may have tired of his act.

  1. Ndog Says:

He needed to bring someone in the players believed in that was going to show them how to win. So that means he didn’t think he or Jameis could lead them. I wonder if the great coaches like Bellichek, Gibbs, Walsh or Parcells felt that way? I’m going to guess not. This Arains guy is a fraud and no this had nothing to do with Jameis. I just believe he is a snake, lier and is full of crap

  2. Anonymous Says:

    Arians done lost his mind

  3. Asdf Says:

Take a couple deep breaths and let it go

  4. mark2001 Says:

Told you this already, Ndog. Jameis isn’t the leader that Brady is…not all his fault. And a coach’s leadership isn’t the same as player leadership in the lockerroom and on the field. And yes…other coaches feel the way Arians does.

  5. D-Rome Says:

Jay-Miss wasn’t a leader. I knew that when he instigated a fight against Marshon Lattimore from the sidelines after he got benched, which all happened after his bizarre “Eating a W” speech.

    NOT A LEADER!

  6. Waterboy Says:

I liked Jameis but he was part of the reason they were losing. You lose credibility as a leader when you’re part of the problem so it got to a point where he was better off just focusing on fixing his game rather trying to lead the team.

  7. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Brady commands instant respect. He is the GOAT, with rings to prove it.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Serious question……how can Jameis not be a leader if he is “America’s Quarterback”?

Now, I would have been OK with Jameis coming back for a year for $20 mil or so….I admit that….but that was not considering we had a reasonable shot at Brady.

  9. K2 Says:

You can’t be the leader when you are personally responsible for 2 or 3 loss or throwing 4 picks a game. The old saying… you play like you practice. Jameis would thrown tons on picks in practice and make the excuse that it’s only practice. Until he work everyday to fix the problem it will never change….and his teammates understand the fact.

  10. Matt Says:

The “check yo sheet” “I’m ballin’” outburst sealed his fate here no doubt.

Like I said before in other Jameis threads this last Social media “See you in Tampa 2021” bs is the final straw for even pulling for him. Ira reiterated most Bucs’ fans sentiment that my oh you were here 5 years and couldn’t do anything but throw pick 6s and accumulate junk stats in junk time and now all the sudden you’re going to the Super Bowl? How about you learn how to read a friggin defense and go a drive, then a quarter, then a half, and then a game without throwing and interception? If there is 1 stat that determines a winning team from a losing team it’s the turnover stat. And we checked our sheets and you are the most prolific turnover machine the game has ever seen and it’s not even close.

If Jameis controls his ego and focuses on the basics he will be the most dangerous player in the league. He could go on one of those late season runs where he catches fire the last week or 2 of the season then carries it into the postseason and wins a super bowl.

Im not mad or upset we’re just talking facts as of this very second. We have Tom Brady and we’re better in the short term but long term that’s TBD. Tom Brady is the best leader in the NFL but the only player who may have more determination and will than he does is ironically Jameis! Last time I mention Jameis like this, I just really think that this is a shared opinion amongst many Buccaneer fans and explains why Jameis is so polarizing.

  11. Alanbucsfan Says:

    Ndog-
    Jameis (it’s everybody else’s fault ) Winston doesn’t Win.
He turns it over too much.
Those FACTS are why he has no starting job in NFL.

  12. Youngbucs Says:

Ndog saying Bruce is lying. And then saying this has nothing to do with Jamies 🤥

  13. Ndog Says:

YoungBucs remember “the secondary is fixed” last preseason?

  16. El Buco Realisto Says:

It’s so sad how long the franchise and local media have tried to shovel the narrative of how jay-miss and She-mc were the leaders!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The “real” fans are not surprised of the over decade of failure when those in charge, enabled that narrative and attempted to build around those players!!!!!!!!!!!!! Talk show dominik, Incompetent lovie, licht bulb, and bruce arrogance are all guilty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sad that the sheep put up with and finally “realize” to many years late!!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. LazyMoak Says:

Ndog is to Jameis what Tmax was to McCoy

  20. BrianBucs Says:

With Winston, it’s addition by subtraction.

  21. Hethrew 30 Says:

From the start, many Bucs fans knew Winston was all BS. Most gave him the benefit of the doubt and cautiously supported him as Buc fans. I was not surprised by all he pulled at FSU, and then with the Bucs. As for Licht’s comments at Hard Knocks, Winston had already been hiding his Uber disgrace at the time. Winston is a liar, plain and simple, and he’s pretty lucky so far given how the Uber thing panned out. Winston was BS then, he’s BS now, and it looks like the whole world knows it. His whole foundation as a “leader” as a pile of BS. Smart people already knew it. Karma is a bee-atch.

  22. Hethrew 30 Says:

Arians stock went up in my book over the past year. He had the courage apparently to tell the Glazers and Licht…”Hey I tried. This guy is not fixable because he doesn’t listen. Not to those before me, not to me. I can’t coach self-discipline and good decisionmaking into him.”

  23. Marine Buc Says:

I’m so happy I will never have to watch Winston licking his fingers and carrying on like a 12 year old.

I remember watching Fitzpatrick trying to help Winston mature and just shaking his head and laughing at Winston – I know exactly what was in Fitzpatrick’s mind but I won’t repeat it here…

    Good luck Jamies.

  24. Tbbucs3 Says:

Jameis was a great person in the Tampa community.

It’s been years since his last mistake and he’s learned to sepertate himself from bad influence.

Jameis never brought any of these issues to the Tampa Bay area even though many of you haters were rooting for his downfall.

  25. LaMarcus Says:

Bruce act is tired. He is no qb whisper. That’s why Brady is coming. He cant develop a qb. There ready made and Arians calls himself a whisper. Fraud

  26. D-Rome Says:

Jameis would thrown tons on picks in practice and make the excuse that it’s only practice. Until he work everyday to fix the problem it will never change….and his teammates understand the fact.

    Completely agreed, K2.

Anyone who competed at a sport or continues to compete at a sport understands that practice is the place where you can make mistakes, but only to a point. We all understood those picks when Jay-Miss was a rookie.

Throwing picks in practice as a rookie was understandable. We all understood. When I went to training camp last year I still saw bad decisions. You can’t have rookies picking you off or throwing wild footballs in the stands after five years.

  27. Tbbucs3 Says:

BA needs to get his head out of his bleep right now and stop the Jameis shaming tour. He’s sounds like a pretty child. So much for an allegeded “QB whisper”.

  28. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Petty

  29. D-Rome Says:

Ndog is to Jameis what Tmax was to McCoy

That’s not true. Tm@xcon couldn’t stand McCoy. The only person he has more disdain for is “Dungy the Clown”.

  30. Ben from Riverview Says:

@Tampabaybucsfan…… in answer to your question how can you be America’s Quarterback if your not a leader that has an easy answer. The same way that a writer can write for a team for long periods of time and still be a fan of a different team and be given cover by his/her colleagues.

  31. WyldKat Says:

Jameis was a leader… in turnovers.

  32. Kobe Faker Says:

“The honeymoon will die down very soon

TB12 will start screaming at incompetent QB intern Leftwich

What will BA do when TB12 goes directly to the Glazer boyband and demand the firing of BAs adopted son?

Kobe Faker has heard from reliable sources that TB12 little Chihuahua Alex Guerrero is starting sh!t already ”

  33. mark2001 Says:

The cornerbacks are fixed…just young and needing more experience, as I see a group needing more seasoning…a talented young group, but with no Deion Sanders talent among them. I expect them to be better this year, and great the next year.

  34. Sport Says:

    LazyMoak – lmao.

NDog – go back and watch Hard Knocks, if that is the type of leadership you believe in, it says everything we need to know.

Even one of his greatest attributes was proven to be a fly in the ointment – working long hours. If he was there in the am before everyone else and left after everyone, all that proves he lacks the ability to ‘get it’ by putting in normal hours, has little to no balance in his life and hardly improved because of it.

What was the purpose of him showing up at 4:30am? To gain respect? At some point being on time, showing improvement and getting results is what is needed.

Fitz gently put him in his place, JW didn’t get it. He could not tell when he lost his audience and/or he didn’t know how to get it back.

Some of you whine about no FA’s clamoring to be here, I could say where are all the players complaining that JW is gone? Crickets….

    In BA I Trust!

  35. ClevelandBuc Says:

This is making something out of nothing. What he’s saying is—and I agree—that if they were going to replace Jameis with anyone, it had to be someone who could get guys to follow him.

I truly don’t think he’s saying they “needed” leadership in general. I honestly think Brady was the only way they could’ve moved on from Jameis based on locker room dynamics.

He needed to bring someone in the players believed in that was going to show them how to win. So that means he didn’t think he or Jameis could lead them

what do folks around the nfl tell rookies?……what you did in college means nothing….

JW wasnt even a leader at FSU….he was popular within the locker room but he wasnt a leader…..not with all the antics he did at FSU….

BA has a SB ring….he helped lead an offense that won it all…..BA is a leader….JW was never a leader in the locker room and never a leader of men….

BA is exactly right….the offense needed a leader they believed in and respected….just like JPP and the defense….defense turned around once JPP came back healthy and calling players out…holding players accountable…..

    JW IS A BUST!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  37. SC Bucs Fan Says:

NDog, broken record. And when we win with Brady will you admit Winston couldn’t lead this team?

  38. LaMarcus Says:

This is bad. Why does this team needs special roles like leaders so they can play better?

Just play and win the game. Why is it that they need all smack when :

    We have world class weapons?
    We have good oline
We have a top 5 defense
    We corrected turnovers

But we need now a leader to show us how to win when we have 1000.coaches. Messy

  39. LordCornelius Says:

“Sad that the sheep put up with and finally “realize” to many years late!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Yeah most Bucs fans have been super happy and supportive with the product for years, as evidenced by massive attendance and support and nothing but positive supporting comments on this site.

    lmao. WAKE UP DUDE lol

  40. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist - City of St Pete Says:

    Joe,

James didn’t have the follow-thru of Execution/Success on the field, so yes, it wore thin.

    Leas

  41. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist - City of St Pete Says:

Jameis didn’t lead by example when it came to execution of your job to help to team win. And the team grew tired of the hollow leadership.

  42. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Sad some posters on here would rather see Brady and the Bucs fail so they can say “told you so”. Solid Bucs fans there.

  43. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

^^ I think about that a lot, SC Bucs Fan. — That blows my mind.

  44. Will Says:

LaMarcus it’s because the team that you and I love and root for is full of mental midgets. It’s a shame that none of these grown professional athletes has enough mental fortitude to stand up like Sapp did and say this $hit stops now and rally the troops.

  45. Lamarcus Says:

    Will

That’s exactly what I’m seeing. Brady should NOT be here for that. Brady should be installed just fine without all that “teaching to other players” crap when he has to adjust as well

We are putting the whole franchise on the back of Brady just like we did JW

Brady really doesnt not have time for that

  46. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Lamarcus, it’s what he lives for. He will embrace it just fine.

  47. jmarkbuc Says:

“We are putting the whole franchise on the back of Brady just like we did JW”

The difference is TB IS a franchise QB. I’ll put my money on the GOAT, even a 43 yr old GOAT.

  48. rrsrq Says:

    The difference is clear….
Dungy had a plan to how the losing stops now, he was consistent because he saw Chuck Noll be consistent. Didn’t throw his players under the bus publicly but he definitely showed them accountability. Did that get us over the top, NO, but it stopped the losing culture. He would’ve had a plan for Jameis, he has told the team the talent is in the room, but nobody has been there to mold them. Look at the defense, Bowles has been consistent and we saw the growth and confidence of the young guys, meshing with the older guys and a person like Shaq and JPP, saying this is where I want to be and play in this defense. Why aren’t there offensive players running here…

  49. Jeffbuc Says:

Some of guys just randomly forget the many games jameis had like the bengals game where he threw 5 picks in one half. How many times a season did every bucs fan say we have to get him out of there. We should be winning this game if jameis didn’t turn the ball over 3-5 times. It was every other game. The supporters seem to forget all those games and just look at his final stats and say 5,000 yards 33 tds. But they forget if he cut his interceptions in half we would have been in the playoffs. So yes we are a competent qb away from competing. If Brady would have been here the last 5 years with the same exact teams just switching Brady for jameis. Do you really think we would have 4 losing records and one 9-7 finish. I would say we would have made the playoffs Atleast 3 times. And if you don’t agree with that you will just have to follow jameis to his new team. Because your love for him is blinding you.

  50. Tye Says:

Two very important qualities the Bucs now have at QB that have been missing the past 12+ years:

    A Winner
    A Leader

  51. Bucsfan951 Says:

NPUPPY SAYS: “This Arains guy is a fraud and no this had nothing to do with Jameis. I just believe he is a snake, lier and is full of crap”

Haha yeah right! You supported BA when he supported jw. You would always say “see, the coach says not all of those ints are on jw. He knows that it’s the receivers fault.”

Now the coach doesn’t know crap? Get outta here! It has everything to do with him sending jw packing! You’re so CLUELESS to what you even say! Again, no factual information from you. Only opinion.

MISSING PUPPY!!! LAST SEEN CHASING A BLACK MERCEDES WITH THE LICENSE PLATE THAT READS “NMPLOYD”

  52. SteveK Says:

This is what’s up for sure!

Turnovers and leadership were an issue before.

  53. firethecannons Says:

Hoping that playing for TB wakes up the offensive line to play serious football, especially Donovan Smith.

  54. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Jameis isn’t a leader more like a cheerleader who can play football. He’s a great friend and teammate but he’s just a different kind of dude hence the eating w’s and what not. I like him and wanted it to work out with him but he just isn’t that guy. He has all the physical tools needed just not the full mental package needed to run the most important position.

Now people want to cry about Arians. Was he supposed to do say all of this stuff while he was still on the team? Then you woulda be crying about throwing him under the bus like you already did. Arians is no more 2 faced than any head coach out there. Off season is the time for truth to come out.

You guys who crucify him for lying to the team please get over you high and mighty sanctimonious selves! You, me our families, bosses, politicians and our presidents lie to us all the time over stuff we shouldn’t have done and you don’t hold them to the same moral outrage let him go he’s no longer a Buc.

  55. sincethebeginning Says:

Yes, Tom Brady is about to take Bucs Nation to freaking school about what leadership is in pro sports. Glad one Joe is at least making an effort not to sound clueless about the concept, for the first time in a long time. Bravo!

  56. Pete I Says:

I see two XFL QBs have jobs in the NFL. Before Winston.

    Huh…

  57. Architek Says:

Is he still “America’s QB” if still unemployed??

  58. DBS Says:

Who is the Pro Bowler on the team now?

  59. Will Says:

LaMarcus I agree we’re doing the same to Brady that we did to Winston but I’ve gotta agree with others that say Brady can handle it and thrives in it. If people believe that then they also have to believe that the powers that brought Jameis here did nothing to put the right peices in place around him with a plan for a culture change. I’ve gotta say a plan looks to be in place now. It started last year with getting rid of McCoy and then Hargraves and unfortunately for those that loved Winston he was the latest. I’m a Bucs fan 1st but I do believe as an organization they and Jameis failed each other. Hopefully things finally change and this can become a team that we fans aren’t embarrassed to root for.

  60. Kgh4life Says:

Jameis had the personality and spoke as if he was a leader, but when it came to showing it on Sunday’s, it never materialized. After a while players want to start winning.

  61. Clean House Says:

Arians= Fraud snake politician loser slob

  62. JimmyJack Says:

Joe it’s starting to smell real bad for Winston. Hearing you say some players may have turned on Winston……..Your articles the other week saying we may have had lockerroom issues along with the FL State teams……..Lombardi saying we now have a real man leading us………Arians saying this above………and nobody apparently wants Winston to be their starter.

Looks like NFL circles know crap we don’t about Winston. I’m convincing myself more and more there was more then just INTs as a problem here.

  63. stpetebucsfan Says:

Why has this meme of Belicheat being a great coach continued? Because of
    Brady!!!

AGAIN…Belicheat is a defensive genius. It was HIS defenses that enabled TB12 to win those six rings. I certainly concede that.

But which came first the chicken of the egg? Belicheat was literally a LOSING HC until Brady. He won only one season in his first six years as head coach.

Got that? He was 36-42 for Cleveland…close to 28-42 eh. Both JW and BB got run for those records..five years later he gets another gig with NE and starts…5-11 a .318 win %. Then he starts Brady and it all turns around!!!

I get that coincidence is not the same as causation…but that coincidence at minimum should raise some questions. If Belicheat can’t win this year he should be viewed as riding TB12 to his great record.

  64. WestChap Says:

Amen! It takes a boat load more than arm talent and a winning smile to be a leader and I didn’t see even an ounce of it in our prior QB’s last press conference.

Accountability is more than words; its a mindset… a whole way of life that apparently can lead to things like avocado ice cream (?)… Tom “Accountability” Brady is now in the house!

  65. Fb unmoderated! Says:

And if you watch Arians on rich Eisen, he says he called two teams for jameis, one wasn’t interested and the other said thank you for the call.

I don’t want to pile on, but given the weeks of calling people idiots and stupid to see that jameis wasn’t gods gift, and would be a steal at the franchise tag… including by America’s joejamisfan.
