“Take The Checkdown”

February 26th, 2020

Bucco Bruce Arians made the rounds at the NFL Scouting Combine yesterday and found his way to the big, fancy NBC Sports set.

There he sat in with former Bucs QB Chris Simms and ProFootballTalk.com ultimate insider Mike Florio.

The video is below and, of course, you can hear Arians talk about America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston. “Take the checkdown!”

Unlike in other chats about Jameis yesterday, Arians was rather upbeat about his quarterback but still says he’s looking for better.

The front-7 on defense remains a priority in free agency, Arians added.

Enjoy!

    If Jameis being the
NFL passing leader doesn’t seem to important,
neither are your 2 NFL coach of the year awards without a super bowl,

    Hypocrite….

But you’re happy to coast on that “whisperer”

and what has Mr. Licht ever done?

  2. Clean House Says:

    The standards for Arians
Is fun, sound bytes, entertainment, and Wardrobe.

But JW is supposed to be the savior w a crap run game, no defense for years and a clown doing personnel

  3. Clean House Says:

Yes Jameis had too many terrible picks last year, but they are treating the man like garbage after all of his hard work and dedication to this team and he ought to go elsewhere just on principle, away from these never was be losers.

I enjoyed watching his comeback National championship win and Almost perfect Heisman trophy winning season, and I still believe that’s the player and leader that is on the cusp of showing up.
    Over 5100 is ballin
    33 TDS is ballin

Show some respect you scumbag franchise

  4. Clean House Says:

Fan since 86 have the right to call it how I see it

  5. Tye Says:

Basically, if JW was good enough, the Bucs would have commit to him already..
The desire to see what’s available, door 2, door 3, is wanting there to be a better option to justify them moving on and becoming a better team for it!

  6. Buczilla Says:

    Cool interview, thanks Joe’s.

  7. REDZONE BA Fan Says:

    Just an observation:

Every WR to play w/JW3 Earns a giant contract:

Adam Hump —- How did he do? absent of JW?
Cam Brate —- Signed new $$$
Perriman —- Will sign big new contract – via JW passes
ME13 ——- Great – but what are his #’s, absent of JW?
Godwin—– BEAST – But what are #’s absent of JW?

NET – NFL receivers should want to play with JW….. check your sheet…

  8. Jean Lafitte Says:

Ironically, last season it was the short routes where he had most of his turnovers.

  9. Jean Lafitte Says:

    moderation sucks

Having fun with this analysis….Any NFL receiver should desire, to be on JW team. Regardless of being Round 1, or UDFA — You will make some coin $$$ as receiver on JW team.

See Adam Humphries – same amazing talent after moving to Titans. Yet, results – inferior. I expect same for Brate, when he moves to another team. And same for Perriman,

JW is undervalued, in ability to max out receiver capabilities….w receivers who are not considered “best’ or next to best.

    Watch and see, Bucs fans……

  12. Clean House Says:

    Brilliant point Redzonw

  13. Jonzey Says:

I am all in for signing Winston he is our leader please don’t mess this up Bucs

  14. Ricky Says:

    FSU in the house!!!!!

  15. Pewter power Says:

Lol delusional yes winston is the only one without a run game in the nfl. Russell Wilson lost three running backs in a season, rashaad penny, carson and prosice, it didn’t make him throw multiple 3-4 game interceptions

Delusional fans say the reason threw 30 interceptions is bucs can’t run the ball and winston is always playing from behind so throws a lot. Godwin broke out in 1 season in which he played in BA’s system

Evan’s had a 1000 yard season even before winston got here. Adam Hump was playing with mariota most of the season not Tannehill. Same offensive weapons flourished under Fitzpatrick too and so did DeSean Jackson before Winston came back.

Bucs were 13 in the league in rushing attempts per game and winston should be missing ba’s arse because if they were bottom of league in rushing attempts winston would have 40 interceptions.

The run game does need to be better but does not explain why winston lead the league in interceptions and pick 6’s. It’s a really stupid logic because even if we had the number 1 rushing offense in the league it doesnt matter the quarterback still has to throw the football, the issue we have is when he drops back to pass not how many yards we get when the ball is run, that’s too separate issues

  16. Defense Rules Says:

@Clean House … “treating the man like garbage after all of his hard work and dedication to this team”. Really? Like ‘garbage’? Not even close. The NFL is in the ENTERTAINMENT BUSINESS & Jameis is just another BUSINESSMAN in that business. When he & his agent came out with his demand for $30 mil plus AND his ‘I be ballin’ statement, Jameis himself set the parameters for what was to come. For that kind of money, he’d best ‘be ballin’. And guess what Clean House, not everyone sees 33 TDs & 5000 yards as PROOF the way that you apparently do. Other ‘little things’ like 30 INTs & a 7-9 record also come into play.

A QB like Patrick Mahomes might be worth $30 mil plus, only because he can lift up other team members to the point where they PRODUCE far greater than their salary would indicate. I’m sorry, but that’s not Jameis. In this type of an offense, Mike Evans is a GREAT receiver … period. Chris Godwin is a GREAT receiver … period. Please don’t make the argument that Jameis MADE THEM, because it doesn’t hold water. They’ve BOTH made some incredible catches that most receivers simply can’t make.

Sorry Clean House, but ‘treating the man like garbage’ is way off the mark. BA is doing EXACTLY what every Bucs fan should want their HC to do: looking for the BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE (BPA?) at EVERY position. And he won’t know IF that’s Jameis UNTIL he knows who else might be available. Smart coach.

  17. Defense Rules Says:

Excellent interview BTW; thanks for including it Joe.

  18. Bruce Blahak Says:

hes ballin lol…turnover machine and a constant loser in the win-loss department. What a statement. He doesn’t get it. Thinks the interceptions are ok.

  19. TDTB Says:

Why is nobody asking the Bucs brass if JW really played for 5 years without corrected vision (contacts) and, if so, why? I’m in the “move on” camp…but what if he really played with poor eyesight? You have to tag him if that’s the case just to “see” if he improves. If he does you have to fire whoever is responsible for allowing him to play without corrective lenses. It’s not unusual for players to wear contacts at all. Troy Palamalu, Eddie Lacy, Santonio Holmes all wore them. There is a lot more. If you require corrected vision you have to wear lenses to fly a plane. How is it a team allowed Winston to pilot the team without corrected vision? If that isn’t bad enough, what if he lights up next year on somebody else’s team…the Bucs look even dumber for letting him go than they do for allowing him to play without corrective lenses. This can’t be a HIPPA problem because the team has the ability to prescribe “corrected vision” as a condition to playing on the team.

  20. Stanglassman Says:

Clean house- I don’t know if I agree with your approach but completely agree in principle. The lack of respect is bad and I can’t help to feel like the Bucs are gonna F this up.

Redzone- You can add Perriman to that list. JW3 get receivers paid.

  21. Stanglassman Says:

TDTB- Doctors recommend that you don’t get Lasik until you are at least 25. Jameis just turned 26. I don’t think being slightly near sighted or not is going to make a difference in his game anyway. But now that he’s old enough for the surgery it can’t hurt.

  22. BucEmUp Says:

Jameis is only two years older than Joe burrow.Hes still a kid.Only.one year under Arians.Bruce just said “Needs more practice needs more games, we’ve only had him one season we’ll see where it goes”

    They’re keeping him

  23. JP_09 Says:

It’s funny how people think Winston “makes” the WR. Lets remember Evans went for over 1k and 12 TDs with the McCown & Glennon throwing him the ball. Evans has a chance this season do do something that no other player in the history of the game has done, 1k plus yard in his first 7 seasons.Evans went for over 1500 and 8 TDS in 18’ with Fitz and Winston. Mike makes this train go, he requires a double team and forces coverages to roll his way, now when you add guys like Godwin and DJax of course guys like Humphries will stand out they’re going against the Ds 4th 5th best coverman. Any QB could thrive in this offense with Evans and Godwin

  24. Bucsfanman Says:

JW “made ME13 and Godwin”?!!! Look, I’m willing to give a nod to Jameis for having a good arm, however, didn’t Mike go over a 1,000 yds his rookie season with Josh McCown and Mike Glennon?! Oh, and those 6 games in 2017 when Jameis was suspended/benched?!
How would you characterize Evans’ college career at A&M? Johnny Manziel ring a bell?! Did you watch any of his games?!
How about Chris Godwin at Penn State? Watch any of those games?!
Adam Humphries missed 4 games due to injury and played on a team that had the league-leading rusher Derrick Henry. I don’t know but, if I’m the Titans, I probably am a run first team.
Cam Brate would still be consistently putting up numbers if the Bucs hadn’t reached on an overrated TE in OJ Howard.
Lastly, Brett Perriman was flat out awful at the beginning of the season, AWFUL! He was drafted in the 1st round by the Ravens because he was thought to be a talented FAST prospect. He also was plagued by injuries throughout his career. Congrats to him for taking advantage of his opportunity here!
Now, tell me again how Jameis “made” these players.

  25. Bucsfanman Says:

JP_09- You beat me to it!

  26. NOLES Says:

    Redzone & cleanhouse –

This isn’t Fantasy Football no one cares about how many yards JW gets for himself or receivers..

His job is to win games. Enough w no run game no O LINE, plenty of greaT

QB’s have done w out run game or best O Line in league. You change your game to what surrounds you. The problem is JW only has one type of game. SLING IT..

While it may have worked out for Brett Favre, JW is NO BRETT FAVRE, I dont care what the stats say. It’s unfortunate bc I am an FSU guy and have no reason to be a hater. I just don’t think he can change and the only stat that matters is the TO margin. Teams who are in the negative watch the playoffs at home on TV….. PLAIN & SIMPLE

  27. Stanglassman Says:

I agree with Redzone on “JW is undervalued, in ability to max out receiver capabilities….w receivers who are not considered “best’ or next to best.”

I don’t know who said Jameis “made Mike Evans and Godwin” that’s not true they’re both great WRs. Both went to the probowl this year I not so sure that happens with McCown or Glennon at Qb. That brings us back to RZ point.

  28. JP_09 Says:

38/72-53.1%-536 yards 3 TDS 6 INTs Winstons Stat line the last two games without Evans and Godwin, Again anyone can throw the ball to those two, they make Winston not the other way around

  29. Todd Says:

    Defense Rules—

There you go exposing yourself again.

    As the voice of reason.

    You’ve made it a habit.

    One which I applaud.

    Danke.

  30. Bobby M. Says:

After 5 yrs….they are still trying to get him to understand basic concepts of being an NFL QB. Physically he has the obvious talent but the game and position rely heavily on the mind…..and he’s is substantially deficient in that area. The light simply isn’t going to come on and frankly, likely will never while in Tampa. Maybe a new team, new role, gets through to Winston…..similar to Talib but as long as he’s rewarded a starting role in Tampa, I don’t think there’s anything that will ignite change. He’s had multiple HCs, QB coaches, OC’s…..nobody is getting through to him and these are all well respected coaches with a proven ability to help Qbs develop.

I really believe less is more with the QB position on our team. Everyone talks Super Bowls…..but you have to be in position for the playoffs to talk SBs. Winston has finished dead last in the division 3 of 5 yrs. He’s had ONE winning season…..And that’s with a rookie deal to leverage other aspects of the roster, he it isn’t going to improve by paying him more. It simply gets harder to be nothing more then avg.

  31. #1 Pick QB 2 Cent Brain Says:

Jameis slurpers are out in force ha ha ha

Get outside of Tampa and nationally he’s viewed as a joke. Jameis is out of excuses time to play like a good qb for more than a week or two at a time

  32. geno711 Says:

    @Redzone

Good observations. I agree with your point. Jameis does help receivers get bigger contracts. They get much of the benefit for him trying to squeeze the ball in and it helps them pad their stats.

    @Defense

    Love your points.

  33. geno711 Says:

So I think Arians was very clear that he personally prioritizes Barrett and JPP over anyone else on the defense.

“Keeping that front seven together is paramount for me; Especially those two pass rushers”

  34. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

BA is going the fall in love with QB at the combine

  35. geno711 Says:

Then later mentioned Vea and Suh the reason they were the dominant run defense. So as we thought, Barrett then JPP then Suh are priorities.

I think someone yesterday on this site said that Carl Nassib would be the 1st defensive signee. That seems less likely hearing all of these soundbytes.

Not that they won’t sign him. Just do not expect him to be the 1st defensive guy signed.

  36. SmoothBayRider Says:

@Redzone , Thanks for the laugh this morning . I needed it . It really is comical how many people support Jameis more than they do the team . Had he not gone to FSU , these same Jameis slurpers would have want him ran out of town.

  37. gotbbucs Says:

    @REDZONE

Did any of that fancy WR production and $ lead to more wins? If stats make you feel good after a loss, more power to you.

  38. Sport Says:

    Cleanhouse and Redzome

You forgot a few people in your analysis.

The entire Defense Not happy. all statements have been honest, which means they hate the interceptions slightly more than his yds and td’s

Running backs – not happy. Being in a hole leads to abandoning the run game. The running back comments have been honest and critical.

    Coaches – not happy.

Defensive coordinator – not happy. having to cover for him, lack of rest and short fields.

Offensive coordinator. – not happy. the game plan is all over the place with his inconsistency. What can you JW to do well? He throws INT’s everywhere, has accuracy/touch issues on short passes, extends every play to a breaking point.

QB Coach – not happy. all but admitted they are having a hard time getting through.

HC – clearly not happy. JW is who he is.

Special Teams. – thankful, If it weren’t for JW, they would be the story of greatest need for improvement.

Offensive line – tired of it and not happy. You need to have perfect blocking for 3+ seconds. JW does everything wrong to help out his oline. If Brady leaves NE watch that line become the worst in football.

TE’s – not happy. They got little to nothing. Both potentially on the chopping block.

So, if you love fantasy numbers, are a receiver you are happy. If you are anyone else, you are not happy and potentially getting fired because your QB is a prolific mess.

    In BA I Trust!

  39. Matt Says:

That was a great interview!! One of the best head coach interviews I’ve ever seen. How could you not want to play for Arians. He has a unique charisma like Pete Carroll. Arians is about as sincere as a human being can get.

I really think having Tom Moore around will help us find and groom our franchise QB, whoever he is.

Anthony Nelson will quickly help us forget all about Nassib. Imagine bringing pressure to Anthony’s side with the hot route; Nelson is like trying to throw over a 747.

  40. Bird Says:

    Noles

Kudos to you man for not being a homer and calling it like it is

  41. Pryda...Sec147 Says:

He is going to be extended and I’m super excited for year 2 Jameis under BA

  42. Craig Says:

Last season the long ball was emphasized and Jameis forgot how to play the short game.

I saw a shnit load of check down receivers waving their arms to try and get Jameis’ eye. Never happened.

When a screen, or short out, was called Jameis started it down and got most of his interceptions on “safe” plays.

How do you fix things like that?

  43. TexBuc Says:

Ask yourself “if the Bucs are moving on from Winston what is stopping them from announcing that we have moved on?”

Easy we have not moved on.

  44. Clean House Says:

Many of you make fair points.
For BA to insinuate that JW is a loser is completely unwarranted and unfair because if you really don’t like him so much, announce you’re not resigning him and have some decency, as the guy is a free agent and has a market which you are polluting with your sour underhanded comments and rhetoric. It’s spiteful and lame. Just grow a pair and say you’re not resigning. If they want to franchise, you think he won’t eemember that? Say he plays lights out? Does he resign here, all forgotten?
I’m not into the public calling out of players. Some players aren’t into it either.
It’s a master space system when a player can’t call out the Great and revered BA. It’s pompous group think and he’s the media’s darling. He’s a self proclaimed whisper. He’s a politician w a book deal. He’s a phony. And to say that as a player on the way out gives one a bad rap as some sort of malcontent. So I’ll say it as a fan.

I have not forgotten the incompetent dumpster fire that is Licht whom the great BA hasn’t said. Sword about but gets him extended into the good old boys club. Total BS

  45. Smashsquatch Says:

He says I was “pissed” they didn’t tell me about the new unis. Then goes on to say he’s seen a sketch and thinks they’ll be closer to the SB uniforms. My guess is he doesn’t like the new look.

My other guess is that he’s keeping Jameis and is simply posturing to negotiate a short term (2yr) deal for JW while he plans to use the franchise tag on Shaq. I’ll be shocked if they work out a long term deal for Shaq after coming off 19.5 sacks and having DR as his agent. I’m sure the asking price is through the roof.

  46. Smashsquatch Says:

He also agrees with my assessment of Winston being that his greatest weakness is risk management and consequently game management. Sky’s the limit if he can coach him up; but it’s glaring he wasn’t able to. What an enigma JW is….
