Report: Bucs Evaluating Brees, Brady & Rivers

February 1st, 2020

You can have my old locker, Drew.

The Tampa Bay Times is reporting that Bucs quarterback coach and Bruce Arians confidant Clyde Christensen was asked to write scouting reports on Drew Brees, Tom Brady and Phillip Rivers — and that he was in that process last week.

  1. J Says:

    Some big brass ones there.

  2. SteveK Says:

    Eeny meany miny moe!

Yes please! Win now, stop banking on unrealized potential.

  3. Marine Buc Says:

I’d be ok with all three as a short term fix as long as we draft a QB in round 1… Maybe Herbert or Eason?

  4. Buccnbeliever Says:

    Brees!

  5. J Says:

Imagining Brees throwing to Evans and Godwin gives you goosebumps.

  6. El Buco Realisto Says:

The “Word on the street” is that team Glazer are panicking of an empty stadium if they bring aimless back, and that most likely ithis s ole stale biscuit last year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Hawk Says:

Calm down everyone. The report could easily say, “No” for all three. For different reasons (cost, age, ability, etc), it could be that none of them would be a fit for the Bucs. Also, this could be a smoke-screen (really looking at a different FA QB), or a negotiation tactic.

  8. Mort Says:

Smells like a plant to help drive down the price tag on Winston.

  9. JP_09 Says:

I’d hope they’re doing their due diligence to scout all potential FA QBs

  10. Hawk Says:

And what team does not have a scouting report on *every* FA?

  11. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

Let Winston go and the fans will have run off another great one before his prime. Please Bucs don’t let this happen. Quit repeating the same mistakes that only sets this franchise back. Go Bucs! Go Winston!

  12. Tye Says:

It has been debated that If the Bucs bring back JW, they certainly won’t add another fan but most likely lose a great number of season ticket holders..
But going into 2020 season with a fresh new face at QB could and should renew a refreshing hope and belief in a possible winning season..

  13. TampaTown Says:

Those are options? God help us. Let’s all stop pretending. Jameis is coming back.

  14. Blogtalkfootball.com Says:

I told my rep that Brady would fill the stadium. If they want ticket sales, that’s the way to go.

  15. Kalind Says:

I’m fine with any of these, provided they’re willing to break the bank on moving up in 2021 for Lawrence (who is better than every QB this year not named Burrow)

  16. TampaTown Says:

If Brady comes here I’m canceling my season tickets. What an idiot. He’s 42. He couldn’t win with the Patriots. SMH

  17. adam from ny Says:

the real issue with brady and brees is they have been in one place for so long, that to uproot and restart fresh for a couple years is a whole task at hand itself…

when they go to work it’s business as usual…same locker, same shower, same this and that…

to change teams means everything is different until you get inside the white lines…

they both will most likely want to keep everything status quo to end their hof careers…

  18. JP_09 Says:

No one cares if you cancel your season tickets. The amount of tickets that will be sold will out weigh the couple fans who decide not to renew their season tickets. Then when the Bucs are playoff contenders you’ll come back to buy your tickets. So go ahead and make a stand, don’t renew your season tickets. You’ll really show the Glazers with a bold move like that

  19. adam from ny Says:

they want to bring in a bridge guy to eason is what it looks like…

jameis is undoubtedly not filling the seats…

    and that’s the bottom line

  20. adam from ny Says:

arians will be outta here after 2 more years with the qb they bring in…

the bucs want a title in arians third year of coaching here…

then he can mosey on outta here

  21. Howard Cosell Says:

The “Word on the street” is that team Glazer are panicking of an empty stadium if they bring aimless back!!

Lol how can the stadium get any more empty?? riddle me that!
Team glaser already gives away tickets to homeless people, but
instead of going to the game they try to sell the tickets, but there’s no buyers!
That empty stadium is hilarious. Howard chuckles every time the camera accidently pans the stands…and no…the red seats don’t fool anyone!

Seriously look at the entitlement: our infighting-owner-siblings get away with creating a debacle like that and no one says a word…..on 2 continents no less!

  22. stpetebucsfan Says:

I just do not see Brees leaving N.O. He’s even indicated he hasn’t made up his mind on whether to play next year. Since it would be a round 20 years if he returns..since he’s playing for a coach he likes and on a team that is clearly SB caliber and will be again next season…IMO Brees returns for at least one more year to complete unfinished business and play in one more SB.

Brady…most here feel the same way as I just outlined Brees. My only hope of him coming here is that there seems to be some friction between he and Belicheat. Perhaps they are just playing poker and bluffing. Time will tell. IF..and that’s a HUGE if…he leaves N.E. I like our chances.

Rivers…probably an upgrade over JW in the short term…but so is the Red Rifle Dalton and somebody(sorry I’m not going through all the threads to give ‘credit’ which makes Wyoming idiot go nuckin futs) even brought up Case Keenum. Not as outlandish as I first thought when I went to the stats. He did go 11-3 in a magic year with the talented Vikings.

  23. WyomingDude Says:

Tom Brady alone, makes way too much sense. Ownership will have to be VERY determined and incredibly benevolent to Tommy, if they truly want to change the allure of the organization.

    Just. Go. Get. It.

Brees as a backup on a 2 year deal, would be an acceptable back-up option, and could NetJet to NOLA without a problem, leaving his established large family there. Plus the allure of beating your former team in division twice a year.

    NO WAY…to Rivers. NO.

  24. Mike Johnson Says:

Hmmmnnn..this This is getting more intriguing by the day. And here it is I was thinking Jameis was a lock to return. Could it be…The Bucs get Cahones and send him packing?

  25. Tbbucs3 Says:

This is a delusional fan base.

  26. TampaTown Says:

    Adam:
Jameis is NOT the reason for empty seats. It’s because of fat lazy fu¢k$ who don’t want to get off their a$$ and go to a game. It’s pathetic

  27. TampaTown Says:

    Tbbucs3:
Couldn’t agree more. A bunch of idiots

  28. Ndog Says:

I gets harder every day to be a fan of this franchise.

  29. Buccernutter Says:

Dude said Brees as a backup. 😂

  30. MidwestBucsFan Says:

Aside from their gaudy career numbers, the thing I like most about those 3 names is that none of them have ever served a suspension for groping a woman.

  31. Joe Says:

The “Word on the street” is that team Glazer are panicking of an empty stadium if they bring aimless back!!

Then they look at the numbers from the TV and new media revenue and the projected numbers from future TV contracts in the next two years and chortle while firing up another Gurkha Royal Courtesan.

  32. Warrenfb12 Says:

Nice plant here by the Bucs lol. Who needs an f-ing scouting report on Brees/Brady/Rivers..

  33. Bird Says:

Brees already commented that he will be qb of saints or will retire
    Brees aint happening

Brady will not come here. But the guy that says if brady comes here he will sell season tickets. Well those tickets would be picked up in two seconds. Trust me . Season tickets would go thru the roof with brady . Jameis not so much as we have continue to see every year. Jameis is not putting fans in the stands.

Rivers is the big question mark. He didnt have the best year. But to throw passes to the best receiver and tight end combo in the nfl he would be intrigued. Im sure He could find OJ more often then he has been used here. He loved antonio gates for so many years.

But again i think jameis is here for another year on a tag

  34. JimmyJack Says:

If you read between the lines of the Peter King report the Bucs are negotiating with Winston. They are not letting info get leaked unless it’s something they want leaked.

This could very well be a negotiating tactic. We just don’t know.

These rumors about other QBs have little merit right now. Once we get closer to March leading into free agency these rumors will mean a whole lot more and be more revealing at which direction the team is leading.

For now it’s fun to think about these HOF QBs as possibilitys.

  35. Smashsquatch Says:

We need a field general who can galvanize a team and win meaningful games. I cringe at the thought of JW under center for a big game. He simply melts. I’m also weary of bringing in a legend who doesn’t move well with rapidly diminishing arm talent. And when you add marketing and economics to the equation it just complicates this even further. Regardless if you’re pro Winston or not, this is a VERY difficult decision for the Bucs who arguably are entering a window of opportunity to win now. How they navigate the next three months will either catapult them into relevance or set the franchise back another five years. Tbd…

  36. Joe Says:

Brees already commented that he will be qb of saints or will retire Brees aint happening

Tend to agree. Been around long enough and have grown cynical enough to know cash and opportunity changes people’s minds. It’s hard to believe Brees would leave the Saints but the Bucs should do their homework just in case.

    Brady will not come here.

Tend to agree as well but it has nothing to do with football and everything to do with business (read: wifey). Brady (and his wife) will get far, far more visibility and rub elbows with far, far more business movers and shakers in Los Angeles (Chargers) or Las Vegas (entertainment capital of the world) than in Tampa Bay. Had the Dolphins been looking for a free agent quarterback, think Brady would very much be in play there as well (wifey’s business contacts in Miami).

Jameis is not putting fans in the stands.

This is no longer the 1970s. Fans in the stands means less and less every year. Last checked, gross revenue NFL teams get from attendance is less than 20 percent of the full revenue pie. If fans in the stands was important, the NFL would never have gotten rid of blackouts. It’s more about national visibility and buzz (yes and wins) and Jameis gives the Bucs that, bad or good. Joe personally experienced this a few days ago at the Super Bowl. The Glazers *love* this. Joe understands how this infuriates fans, but it is true. As Terry Bradshaw said, if the Bucs were winning, Jameis’ status wouldn’t be an issue.

Rivers is the big question mark.

Big time question mark! Rivers is very much the wild card.

  37. Joe Says:

Nice plant here by the Bucs lol.

    Joe thought the same. 🙂

  38. fernando diaz Says:

Tampa Bay Times is delusional LMAO

  39. WyomingDude Says:

    @Buccernutter..

Reading clearly a challenge for ya mongrel…

Brees was clearly referenced above as a back-up option, when not securing Brady’s services as option #1. Imbecile.

  40. SteelStudBuc Says:

Definitely trying to drive down Winston price tag. Hes asking way too much. He could very well improve but I dont want to wait and see… hes simply terrible in big games and I’ve turned off numerous games.

  41. WyomingDude Says:

    @Tbbucs3…and the esteemed @TampaTown…

“Idiots” do abound. You empty vacuums continue to contribute so much, reflect on such astute insights. Free speech is hey…free speech. Morons.

  42. Armybucsfan Says:

Tampa town. Jameis is the reason the seats are empty. Lol. Just watch the games where he throws multiple picks in a home game. It’s hilarious.

  43. pelbuc Says:

Nothing but a veiled negotiating ploy aimed at ATM’s agent but nevertheless, I hope JW prices his way out of Tampa. Jimmy Johnson said it best, most exciting losing team to watch. Better to be the most boring winning team and that will mean finding a QB that doesnt’s throw TDs for the other team. I hope the Glazers grow a pair and split from JW.

  44. WyomingDude Says:

See…even the lengthy post at 1:37 is free to elaborate on his (opinions)..too.

In retort to that though…one glaring omission there. The same drive, determination for unparalleled success that created the Brady name we know today, now drives the same Mt. Rushmore sized chip on Tommy’ s shoulder to ….win a SuperBowl out from under Belichick. Fact. Thus the Chargers and Raiders extensive squad deficiencies (no matter the off-season spending/drafting overhauls) will allow for anywhere the same probability of competitive success from the jump, as the Bucs would. Lastly there, the “Brady brand” and Tom’s arrogance CANNOT ALLOW for Brady to step out from under Belichick’s shadow, into then known mediocrity, proving Belichick to the greater public, as the defacto cause of the previous 6 title dynasty.

Also, there wasn’t the angle purported at 1:37pm of how the ownership here could creatively use future franchise ownership share as a GIANT fishhook for Tommy boy.

Concrete things to be (have been) factored in.

  45. Pewter power Says:

    A. Bucs dont need to do anything to drive down Winston’s price he did that in the last two games of the season and also by ending the season on a pick 6. Where so some people get their logic

    B. Bucs are losing another great one? Wtf!!!! Yea bucs are tired of all the winning under the greatness of winston lol. If your going to be a great quarterback it usually doesn’t take 6 years for it to happen. If you cant be big time when your salary is cheap then your asking someone to overpay you because you can be once you get money

  46. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

“Nice plant here by the Bucs lol. Who needs an f-ing scouting report on Brees/Brady/Rivers..”

This is a high stakes poker game. JW’s agent opened by saying JW’s got two suitors, the Gumpster Fire just raised.

Ever see that poker player with the blank look on his face and the hoodie pulled over his head and hiding behind the dark sunglasses.

    That’s Gump.

  47. IrishTony Says:

It would be best if the Bucs and James parted ways. It wouldn’t be fair to Jameis if he returned to such a divided, critical fan base. If the team brought him back it would adversely affect ticket sales and further drive this divisive narrative which may impact team chemistry. This team needs to start winning at home and one way that could happen is with added fan support. This team is on the verge of the playoffs and a steadier, more dependable QB could be the difference.

    Adam:
Jameis is NOT the reason for empty seats. It’s because of fat lazy fu¢k$ who don’t want to get off their a$$ and go to a game. It’s pathetic

You cretin……the Lightning sellout every game and the Bucs sold out RJS when they were good….a long long time ago.

  49. Howard Cosell Says:

    Joe Says:

The “Word on the street” is that team Glazer are panicking of an empty stadium if they bring aimless back!!

Then they look at the numbers from the TV and new media revenue and the projected numbers from future TV contracts in the next two years and chortle while firing up another Gurkha Royal Courtesan.

Unfortunately you are absolutely correct, sir. Howard rests his case.

  50. Bucfan81 Says:

I was done with Jaymiss back when he got benched for Fitz. Then we had to see him come back that year and do nothing but throw pics all last year. The only delusional fans are the ones that think Winston can change. Even with the age of Brady and Brees they are still way better than Winston. Hell I would gamble on a rookie coming in and playing better than watching the crap show that is Winston for another year. I want to see a QB that doesn’t throw to the other team half the time.

  51. EEK Says:

    Howard Cosell:

Sadly, it can always be worse…

Let’s hope it doesn’t go there

A proven veteran QB and early QB draft pick seems more and more likely as we haven’t heard much open support from ownership/management for Winston

If the strategy is to devalue Winston to get a deal, it doesn’t send a very positive message or play well in marketing.

Oh, we can be much much worse with or without Winston. That potential is always there….

  52. 813bucboi Says:

    this aint good for JW…..

we dont hear the staff scouting FA OLB/DE to replace SHAQ or JPP….

    GO BUCS!!!!!!!!

  53. WestChap Says:

Oh please let it be true. I’m not going to live forever.

  54. NPRSageBoy. Says:

Too many Pick 6s that lead to losses is the reason for the empty seats. You’re supposed to build a winner with your franchise QB on his rookie deal. That ship sailed before last season when JayMiss made $21M. Now he wants $30M? Take a walk.

    Peace, out.

  55. Jameishas2go Says:

Step 1: Resign Shaq Barrett before free agency

Step 2: Franchise Jameis( he will not sign it until he has to)

Step 3: Begin speaking with Free Agent QB’s that would be available: Tom Brady, Philip Rivers, Teddy Bridgewater, Marcus Mariota, Case Keenum.
If you can sign Brady, Rivers or Bridgewater to a solid but not market setting contract you do it.(Proceed to Step 4a) If not, then you have Jameis on 1 year franchise deal, a prove it deal like Cousins had before he left Washington.(Proceed to Step 4b)

Step 4a: Free Agent Quarterback has been signed, draft future QB in 2020 draft to sit and learn.(Proceed to Step 5a)

Step 4b: No Free agent QB signed, Jameis on franchise tag, and draft a future QB to pressure Jameis for the first time in his career.(Proceed to Step 5b)

Step 5a: Wait until the last minute and drop the franchise tag on Jameis when you have all your duck in a row. Similar to what Carolina did with Josh Norman a few years back.

Step 5b: Go into the season with Jameis as the starter and Jacob Eason or Justin Herbert, or Jordan Love as the back up.

*If you want Herbert, you are probably going to have to trade up for him

  56. 3isaBust Says:

The captain of the Titanic decided to go to bed and not give the lookouts proper binoculars, the Glazers and Licht be like, “Hold my beer”. #NoPlayoffs

  57. Bucemup Says:

It’s that a job requirement to evaluate potential free agents that hit the market in a position that you’re looking into? Wake me up when Free agency starts. All the rumors before March makes me tired.

  58. Ed Says:

What they should be looking for is a G.M., kicker, left, right tackles, running back, safety, and a center. If one of the above Quarter backs come here it is a money grab, this team is in bad shape, because of this G.M. but no one calls for his head only the black guy.

  59. SteveK Says:

    Ed,

Jensen played well this last year. Donovan smith did ok.

I think the former number one overall pick, seeking a 30 million salary, should be taking better care of the football in year five.

  60. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Wow. Not wow that they are doing it, but wow that Rick Stroud once again makes up a story.

He pulls this stuff every off season. Come on, people.

  61. Mr. Reality Says:

Joe says: “This is no longer the 1970s. Fans in the stands means less and less every year. Uh, the Glazers do not like bad visiblity and buzz. Winston has brought NOTHING positive to Glazers other than by their good graces, they have not made sure he is sent packing. After every realistic chance, they how him nothing. Yes, 20% (a bit more actually) is from ticket sales, but full stands are a reflection of fan sentiment. And “members” that Bucs refer to as season ticket holders have fallen since the Uber issue came out and with the sad season following suspension–double dips. Winston is a BIG part of this team not “selling” like it used to, like it should be. Yes, losing is not good…but die hards hand with they lose…they don’t hang when they don’t like their QB, be it play or character. Winston will catch on somewhere and continue to be millions. But it’s probably not the amount he wants, the role he wants, and that is no one’s fault but his own.

  62. Howard Cosell Says:

Mr. Reality Says: the Glazers do not like bad visiblity and buzz.

You need a true fight or flight, back-against-the-wall attitude to run an NFL franchise as an owner….if you’ve never had a true fight, or a true flight in your life…..if you’ve had truckloads of wealth showered on you…

And let me be clear: The prospect of losing billions when you would still have a comfortable (albeit, not wealthy) lifestyle is not a true threat.
True toughness of spirit comes from e.g. risking $100k when that’s every dime you have to your name

  63. Howard Cosell Says:

    kind of like Malcolm

  64. Howard Cosell Says:

Just to spread the blame: The same syndrome is on display (to a lesser degree) in Oakland/Las Vegas
