Bucs Being “Bold”

February 28th, 2020

Roll the dice!

A football thinktank has an idea for the Bucs to drastically improve their team, help take a lot of pressure off Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, and perhaps propel the Bucs into the playoffs in January 2021.

That would be to quit f@rting around with the current crop of two-bit running backs and go get Derrick Henry.

Football Outsiders, a stat gang Joe respects, decided to come up with a “bold” offseason move for each NFL team. For the Bucs, that would be to get a powerhouse running back.

That would be bruising manbeast Henry.

The Bucs were a dreadful running team in 2019, with the 27th rushing offense by DVOA, and there wouldn’t seem to be an easy fix. They could upgrade from sophomore back Ronald Jones and free-agent veteran Peyton Barber — who underwhelmed in 2019 with 4.2 and 3.1 respective yards per carry. Henry led football with 3.3 yards after contact per attempt, based on Sportradar charting. And he shined even when his line allowed him to be hit at or behind the line of scrimmage, collecting 2.1 yards per attempt, better than a yard more than either Jones or Barber.

Henry would make Jameis Winston’s life easier (assuming the Bucs retain their quarterback), and not just because of his rushing efficiency putting Winston in better down-and-distance situations. Henry was the centerpiece of a Titans offense that tied for sixth in play-action percentage. Winston enjoyed tremendous success with play-action in 2019, throwing for 3.6 more yards per attempt than on his traditional throws. With Henry, the Bucs might be convinced to ramp up their play-action usage from their bottom-three rate of 18%.

There is no question Joe would like Henry. Hey, Joe thinks it is obvious the Bucs might just be going for broke this fall. So why not?

Personally, Joe would prefer the Bucs to draft J.K. Dobbins out of Ohio State and instead, go buy a safety or equally important, buy another pass rusher in edition to Shaq Barrett and Jason Pierre-Paul.

Derrick Henry is not coming to Tampa to play with Winston. No great running back in their right mind would want to finish their career playing along side America’s turnover machine.

  2. LaMarcus Says:

    Something somebody

Cut Barber and trade Ronald Jones. Jones is not that good either and we cant bank on guys like that.

  3. DoooshLaRue Says:

I’m all in on Dobbins too Joe. I think he’s gonna be really good.

  4. Swampbuc Says:

These morons should just start consuming hallucinogens. Their suggestions might become more coherent then.

Why not trade for Patrick Mahomes.

    The stuff these imbeciles write.

  5. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

Dobbins will be there in the 2nd round.

All time rushing leader at Ohio State.

Trade back in the 1st with the Eagles, with the #21 pick select the best OT on the board. One of the 5-6 studs will be there.

Pick Dobbins at #45 and the best DL at #53 like Gros-Matos.

  6. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

The Eagles are desperate to move up for an elite receiver like Jeudy, Lamb or Ruggs.

  7. Couch Fan Says:

Getting a RB is a “bold” move? Not what I consider a bold move but ok.

  8. RagingBrisket Says:

Behind this oline you won’t see the same results as running behind TN oline. This lousy overrated (on this site, at least) oline is the root of all problems folks, not the running backs or Winston.

  9. John Sinclear Says:

Traditionally, they would draft a corner, or a kicker. Why expect anything different this year?

  10. El Buco Realisto Says:

Day by day they are getting away from the “they have the roster, they just need to be coached up” arguments that were so wrongly told last year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Every “upgrade” and “fix” has to do with upgrading player talent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    The truth is being revealed!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

    Off topic, funniest combine moment.

Mike Florio was interviewing Deandre Swift, RB Georgia, his agent must have told him to stress how great his educational foundation was. At the podium he said that as a freshman in high school he took both Spanish and Latin excelling in each.

Florio asked him, “Como se llama?” which is the first thing a Spanish student is taught on Day 1. Deandre said, “I have no idea what that means.”

“How about Latin and in your current situation this may be pertinent. Do you know what caveat emptor means?”

    Deandre laughs, “No!”

    “Let the buyer beware!”

  12. Formerly Tampa 2 Says:

Bold would be to get a veteran QB that can allow our receivers to flourish.

  13. SOEbuc Says:

Lmao. Bringing in Henry into a BA passing game in a passing league. Go out and spend money on a riteous RT and oline depth before breaking the bank on a RB. Jonathan Taylor or Dobbins in the second.

  14. Pewter power Says:

Damn Joe’s never have cap space if they were running a team and losing

Go back as far as you like and every superbowl WINNER either had a quarterback, stellar defense or both.

Titans got beat 20-7 by the Jags and 16-0 by Broncos, nothing changed for them until Tannehill replaced Mariota.

How many superbowls has Ezekiel Elliott been too? Henry had a good season no doubt and would we better with the threat at receiver and tight end we have but winston would still have to throw the ball which means picks as usual

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Another high-priced FA that we can’t afford……we need to sign our own……draft a RB after you have drafted a RT…..
Even with a running game….Jameis needs to stop throwing picks…..

  16. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Bold would be landing Conklin and drafting an LT in the first round

  17. chris L Says:

please dont overspend on this position. we need younger backs anyway

  18. PSL Bob Says:

They got the RB part right, but doubt Henry would be amenable and/or the Bucs would pony up the $$ for him. I think we can find a winner in the draft to pair with ROJO.

  19. #1 Pick QB 2 Cent Brain Says:

Dobbins is still hurt and his o line in college opened up insane holes

Bucs o line sucks at run blocking

  20. Brandon Says:

Go buy this guy, go buy that guy, this equals a guaranteed recipe for losing football. Ask the Patriots how wisely bargain-bin hunting free agents has worked for them and then ask how buying all the big names has worked for the Redskins.

  21. catcard202 Says:

<1% chance Derrick Henry is suiting up for the Bucs in 2020.

  22. ColBucFan Says:

How can his life get any easier? He threw picks on the FIRST PLAY of several games.

  23. Mister Negative Nancy Says:

Interesting that ditching Winston and getting Brady, Rivers or Carr is would not be what they consider most bold.

Henry + Brady? with these receivers, and defense… Bucs would be the team to beat.

  24. Tval Says:

“Henry isn’t coming to play with Winston.”
But Tom Brady is coming with THIS o-line.
    Heheheheeeee!!!! KEEP embarrassing yourselves.
Henry would HATE teams couldn’t stack the box.
Some of you guys are LOST in your hatred.
I’m guessing, mostly, divorced & sad and NEVER seen a athlete in their lives.
Tannehill couldn’t throw a pass before the 4th quarter.
Didn’t allow it. Lmao!! He’s the AFC Garoppolo. HAHA!!! Both are TRASH

  25. catcard202 Says:

The reason TB12 is seriously considering TEN is because of their Run Game.

Henry is a big factor in TEN having shot at TB12…So, Henry isn’t getting out of Nashville, not in 2020 anyway.

  26. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

@Nancy If you spend your cap money on Brady and Henry, you would not be able to keep your defense. Especially the pass rush.

Carr and Dobbins would fit nicely under the cap and leave $ for the defense.

  27. Tval Says:

    Substitute Brady with Jameis, Nancy.
Brady would be broken in 3 weeks behind that swinging-gate, you call an o-line. You’re just admitting Brady couldn’t do it without the leagues leading rusher.
Now the Bucs are “where all free agents want to go.”
In what alternative universe? Oh, that’s right, Florida. Lmao!!!
Wake up, dummies. Give Jameis Henry and you guys would say “hey, I told ya we knew year 2 would be awesome with Bruce.”
    Go play frisbee golf.
So hard listening to a bunch of girly men talking sports. Stop

  28. Tval Says:

Carr SUCKS. “4th and sack”?? Lol!!
The ONLY qb sacked, CONSISTENTLY, on 4th down. Hahahaaa!!! WHAT???
You believe his brother because he’s not biased. Lmao!!! He’s been dodging judging his brother for years and pretends he’s Brady. NOBODY thinks Carr is any good. NOBODY!

  29. Tval Says:

“ Add a vet to allow our receivers to flourish.” HAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!!!!
Because they need 150 catches each and 2,000 yds. I’ve heard it ALL now. the stupid just doesn’t end with Buc fans. Lmao!!

  30. D-Rome Says:

Derrick Henry was ineffective while playing with an ineffective QB. It wasn’t until Tannehill came in and started that Henry became a beast in the run game.

He’d face the same ineffectiveness with Jay-Miss

  31. Pok Says:

Henry would come to play with Brady. Get Brady and the rest falls into place. At least as long as he keeps giving the “rich supermodel wife” discount!

  32. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Personally, Joe would prefer the Bucs to draft J.K. Dobbins out of Ohio State and instead, go buy a safety”. B-I-N-G-O Joe. Nailed it. Bucs couldn’t afford Henry unless we passed on Shaq or JPP, our 2 high-priced guys besides QB obviously. And IF we were stupid enough to not re-sign both, we’d STILL have to replace whoever we didn’t sign. Then you’re talking either big $$$ or a high draft pick. Not worth it. I just hope Dobbins is there in the 2nd Rnd, because we’re not drafting him in the 1st Rnd.

@TBBF … “Another high-priced FA that we can’t afford……we need to sign our own……draft a RB after you have drafted a RT….. Even with a running game….Jameis needs to stop throwing picks”. Did you ever feel TBBF like you were peeing into the wind off the bow of the boat? Ya, me too. So many seem to think that we’re the Federal government and can just print money when we screw up & can’t balance the budget.

Jason Licht selects Corberback from Somewhere university

  34. Ateonetree Says:

Sign Henry and take the mountain out of Louisville in the first, imagine with that beast of an oline and Henry wearing down defenses in August and September playing in humidity. We would absolutely destroy defenses

  35. firethecannons Says:

yeah–we need Derrick Henry and an o-line upgrade tackle, is he affordable? perhaps we can market Cam Brate or even OJ and get some cap breathing room/additional pick?

  36. Buczilla Says:

I agree wholeheartedly with the last paragraph. According to Henry, his “starting point” is Elliott’s contract. Paying running backs that kind of money who are not destined for the hall of fame is beyond dumb. Pass.

Behind this oline you won’t see the same results as running behind TN oline.
