BSPN: Chucky Will Look To Upgrade

February 16th, 2020

Looking at QB options.

If you listen to Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians, he wants to see what is behind Door No. 2 before he commits to Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

Joe maintains behind Door No. 2 could be Derek Carr.

We all know Chucky goes through quarterbacks like Scott Baio goes through blondes. Chucky never met a quarterback he didn’t like until the quarterback played for him. And there are rumors Chucky is already tired of Raiders quarterback Derek Carr.

Former Raiders executive Michael Lombardi has flat out said on his podcast, “GM Shuffle,” that the Raiders will open their first season in Las Vegas without Carr on the roster. Lombardi has also added that Carr’s contract is “tradeable.”

Last week on an edition of “NFL Live,” seen weekdays on BSPN, NFL insider Dan Graziano talked about the possibility that Chucky will unload Carr.

“I think Gruden likes Derek Carr, but would look at an upgrade if there is one available,” Gaziano said. “I think that’s what to watch here. Can he do better than Derek Carr? [Carr’s] contract does allow them to get out of it. It’s a minimal hit for them if they did want to move on.

“You have already heard them connected with Tom Brady and I think they are connected with other quarterback options. Jon Gruden sort of notoriously [changes players] at that position. We will see if he tries to upgrade.”

Well, Joe is guessing Raiders general manager Mike Mayock isn’t just going to let Carr walk away free. That would be a Lovie Smith move.

So the trick is, how much would Carr fetch in a trade? A second-round pick?

Carr’s not a bad quarterback but a first-round pick for the guy seems a bit steep. And we know if Chucky signs Tom Brady or Philip Rivers or even Ryan Tannehill — Lombardi, who worked with Chucky for one year, said he could easily see Chucky talking himself into bringing Tannehill in as a starter — Carr will be on the block.

Joe, have you ever actually watched Carr play? Gruden wants to move on because he can’t throw the ball more than 10 yards down the field. He is the master of the check down. In fact the wrap on him, even before this year is that he won’t stand in and take a hit. Looks to check down before the progressions of the play.
In other words….. he checkdown mike dynamite with a 26mm contract…. he blows!!!!!
Do yourself a favor and watch a few Raiders games.

  2. Brad Says:

If he’s what’s behind door #2, them Jameis will be back

  3. SteelStudBuc Says:

    @Brad

I think you’re a little bit off the mark there.
Maybe you’d rather see a QB get destroyed, sacked, strip sack, fumble or interception…
Get the ball out quick… why hold on forever?

  4. REDZONE BA Fan Says:

JW3 to Gruden! LIKE+ What a combo! Make it happen! My wish!

Bucs fans wishes – JW gets shipped off somewhere….

    Life w/o JW3—-and X QB?
Get used to games with max score of 10-20 points/game….and hope D can hold to opponents to 15 points. Fewer INT’s – cool! Safely scoring 2 TDs, with 1-3 Field goals.

Super exciting to watch < NOT. But if the Win column improves – great! No playoffs options with those stats….but hey,,,,,fewer INTS….

BTW – Evan and Godwin stats —sink to historic levels….

    Booorrrring…

  5. SteelStudBuc Says:

    @Brad

Carr knows how to use his tight end, he’s good with the screen game (which the Bucs use alot), he is mobile and with these strong receivers here he would be awesome on slants.

  6. Sport Says:

It’s simple, BA makes the decision on the QB.

We will be better than last year year across the board. And I’m not talking about fantasy football stats, I’m talking about kicking ass in the real world.

Sit back and enjoy the improvement b!thes!

    In BA I Trust!

  7. Jean Lafitte Says:

    Redzone

Yeah, because Jameis scoring his 23.5 points a game average is so much more exciting.

    2015 – 21.4
    2016 – 22.1
    2017 – 20.9
    2018 – 24.8
    2019 – 28.6
    __________+
    117.8 divided by 5 seasons = 23.56 points a game

Now this doesn’t include all the easy points he gave the enemy on turnovers.
    ____________________________________________________________
According to Brad on top of the thread Carr somehow passed for 4050 yards last season dinking and dunking. Fellas everything you may read on the internet is not always true.

  8. Pryda...Sec147 Says:

Jameis is going to be extended

If the Glazers don’t want Mr. 5,000 then go ahead and cut bait …fans don’t have a say in this matter, So to the Glazers, you want a different guy…game manager type…then go ahead and get that…but don’t hold Mr. 5,000 up cut him, do it do it now…show your fan base you mean business…you hold the cards …in the same breath I say don’t puddy-foot around put an offer on the damn table …I’m just sick of all the rumors….jay-miss is pricing himself out of a contract, why play games if you know you don’t want him back…I just can’t see what you gain from that, especially if you know Mr. 5,000 is not coming back for the 2020 season!! BUCS be different just he’s out , we will fin an option

  11. BigHog Says:

BUCS cut him already then or at least put the statement out there that there will some other than Mr. 5,000 under center in 2020 …we all know he has done such evil that we just want him gone, then do it …cut bait …make him walk the plank already…BUCS dare to be different …just do it!!! Kick Mr. 5.000 to the curb and deal with whatever arises from the trash pile of free-agents and or draft !!! Tough decision…yes, but I don’t want you…it should be easy to say we moving on without you!!

  12. Clean House Says:

Perhaps these aholes ought to go buy a real running game and start using their tight ends

  13. Warrenfb12 Says:

    Jameis>Carr

  14. Mr. Reality Says:

Joe, I am not a fan of ESPN, and some others. But you really look unprofessional by not using the media outlets proper name. Fine, disagree, and go from there. The Bucs give you a lot of access that you may not otherwise deserve by letting you have the credentials you do. You are luckly I think that TBT is so bad, so short. But at JBF, there is Ira (a good find for a guy who was stuck in the pending buy out), and then there is what remains that is half of your organization that is a complete crap piece. Yes, crap piece.
Set your sites higher. Edgy analysis doesn’t have to mean scumbag reporting. I know I can go elsewhere, but you should strive to improve being classy with the niche you have; not look low-class, low-budget. You might be a medicocre business happy with the stuff you roll in though. Just saying. Low class with headlines like this. Your call. You have the makings to be a legitimate media outlet…but when you write scuz headlines, the nationals take you as a joke. I’m sorry Ira is sucked into your business model. Our only HoF vote deserves more than JBF.

  15. Mr. Reality Says:

Carr is not the long term guy, nor is Winston or Rivers or Dalton or Flacco. Rule going In: Don’t pay too much for a guy who will be here two years, who is not the long term solution. That is it. The Bucs are on life support. They can’t bump along like they have. The owners hoped Winston would do it, and he hasn’t. They aren’t about to get themselves into another mess. No one, especially these owners, are going to give Gruden much if anything for Carr. Bank it.

  16. Defense Rules Says:

It’s amusing to hear a QB who throws for over 4,000 yards on the season like Derek Carr described as a ‘dink & dunk’ QB.

One stat that tells me a lot is a QB’s ‘Net Yards Gained Per Pass Attempt’ (NY/A). It views sacks as a pass attempt & takes those into account (allows you to compare passing & rushing on a more equitable basis IMO). Winston had a NY/A of 7.17 last year, while Carr had a 7.14 NY/A last season, essentially the same. So I guess they’d BOTH be viewed as ‘dink & dink’ … OR NEITHER of them are. Take your pick.

There’s another stat which is Adjusted Net Yards Per Attempt (ANY/A) that takes into account Passing Attempts & Yardage as well as Passing TDs, Interceptions and Sacks. Winston had a ANY/A of 6.15 last season, with a 6.30 average in his 5 years. Carr had a 7.25 ANY/A last season, with a 6.24 average in his 6 years. IOW, when INTs were taken into account, Derek Carr got better results out of his passing game.

Not bad for a supposed ‘dink & dunk’ passer huh. You’re right Jean, don’t believe everything you read on the internet.

  17. Mr. Reality Says:

Listen up. Go back to 2010 to 2014.

The NFL got more popular. The Bucs got worse. The stadium needed a makeover. The team was in a shambles. They tried Lovie to ignite old flames. Nothing worked. So let’s look at this guy Wisnton at FSU. Wildly athletic. Exciting to watch. Problems. Well you know it all.
First overall, take a chance. Got him! All our time and money and he screws us on what we’d worried most about…off field disgraces and on-field turnover machine. Uber. Threw our whole organization into a tailspin after all we’d don it all for him. But we stuck with him, yet again. A chance to redeem. Option year, big bucks. Even cleaned out the staff and brought in BA. This has to be it. But yeah, more embarassment. Five years.

Then there is kneeldowns, Colin K, we took hits, and are still trying to get out of it. Our D has stunk, but as it came around last year, #3 did not. Games lost.
Fan supportl lost. $175M of our own money into the stadium. We bult aroudn one guy. One young man. And he knew our misgivings. And still. One more time. We are so stupid. Winston needs to be conssistent as said going into the last lost season. Wow. He did it to us again in 2019.

Any young man knows when you get this kind of chance, don’t waste it. Yet hes’s done so. Makes all the Bucs higher ups look like idiots if they allow him to come back. So he is gone. Keep him gone. Wish him well. Move on.

  18. Lunchbox Says:

Scott Baio? Is that a Chachi reference? Lol c’mon Joe.

  19. Defense Rules Says:

BigHog … NFL football is a BUSINESS as you well know, and the Bucs are simply keeping their options open at this point. They have zero need to sign or release Jameis at this point in the game. Don’t show your hand prematurely in a poker game?

The Jameis Winston situation reminds me a lot of what went on with Doug Williams here (and no, NOT because they’re both black QBs). Doug was a 1st Rnd pick in 1978 & spent FIVE years here (1978-1982). Improved every year … UNTIL his 5th season. Apparently the Bucs then didn’t view him as their QB of the future at that point, so they moved on … to Jack Thompson (The Throwin Samoan?) who they acquired from Cincinnati (he’d been THEIR 1st Rnd pick in 1979 but THEY moved on).

Of course the rest is history. Doug Williams went to the Washington Redskins & won a Super Bowl in 1987 with them. Retired after the next year.

Oh and Jack Thompson? He played for the Bucs for 2 years … then left football. His record here? 3-13 (got replaced by Steve Deberg BTW).

Can you imagine the irony if Bucs don’t re-sign Jameis & he gets picked up by the Redskins? What’d be even more ironical is if the Bucs end up with Andy Dalton from the Bengals.

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Derek Carr’s contract is $21.5 mil in 2020……..and close to that for the next two years….he is 28……he is a viable option……but….I don’t like giving up a high pick for him.
A transition tag on Jameis would be about $23 mil…….I don’t believe another team would offer that.

  21. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Gruden is doing a better job rebuilding than Jason Lite…

  22. Joe Says:

    Me. Reality:

Joe never gave or currently gives a flip about national publications. Joe has friends in high places at the Big Four networks.

As for being “professional,” you mean like all the local outlets that never gave Joe credit for breaking the Bruce Arians hiring? Instead they tried to tear Joe’s scoop down and ridicule him. Real professionals!

As for “professional,” you mean AP style? Why be the fifth hamburger stand on the block when you can be a taco stand?

Joe doesn’t believe in fixing something that is not broke, both in football and in business. Appreciate your concern and thoughts.

  23. Hodad Says:

Ya’ll are over thinking this. My guess is we draft a QB, Eason, and BA brings in Rivers as his mentor, and bridge QB. The one year 2018 BA was in the booth he gushed about what a great QB he thought Rivers was, and added he still had years left. We’ll get Rivers on a cap friendly two year deal, and draft Eason. Rivers with our receivers, will get us to the playoffs. Jameis has had his five years. BA, and Rivers both have two years left in them. It’s going to happen.

  24. Sean Willis Says:

This team will never go far with Byron LeftBitch as OC. He sucked when we had him as a quarterback, and he SO SUCKS as OC. Get a real COACH instead of a has been, then we might get somewhere.

  25. NPRSageBoy. Says:

We’ll gladly take Carr off Chucky’s hands and never look back.

Maybe we can tag and trade JayMiss. As PT Barnum famously said: There’s an a$$ for every seat.

    Peace, out.

  26. Adam Lakers Carolla Says:

    Scott Baio

    Timely reference

  27. Jim Says:

    Bring back Winston…good night now

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    • Mr. Reality is so lucky he’s still around. LOL

    • Joe, careful! That Scott Baio reference is showing your age! First thing I thought was ‘Half the people here will have to Google Scott Baio’. Heh.

    • On topic, people use to say the same things about Drew Brees that are being said above. I’m not saying Carr will become as good as Brees, but it is something to ponder.

  29. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Sean Willis Says
“This team will never go far with Byron [Leftwich] as OC. He sucked when we had him as a quarterback, and he SO SUCKS as OC. Get a real COACH instead of a has been, then we might get somewhere.”

    Interesting.

Please explain why you thing these things are the case. Because from where I’m sitting, Leftwich and Arians lifted the offense the 3rd in the NFL and made us the best at scoring in the redzone.

So I’m curious. Is it because of the excessive deep passing plays? I would guess that was intentional to get Winston to improve in that area.

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I don’t believe there is a chance in Heaven that Brady plays for anyone other than the Patriots in 2020.

  31. Jeagan1999 Says:

I’ve been saying this for a while. I can easily see gruden and the new Vegas Raiders wanting a “big name” free agent so QB to open their new building/drum up season ticket excitement. And if they do, you don’t pay a backup QB $21mil a year, so Carr would be on the trading block.

As far as the Bucs are concerned, Carr is an instant upgrade over Winston. As Joe highlights in the article, he is still young and in the prime of his career, and his cap number is very manageable . He’s More accurate than Jameis, better at reading defenses, and nowhere near the turnovers! If a 2nd round pick is all it takes to get him in the fold, you take that deal all day long! With weapons like Evans, Godwin and Howard, Carr would thrive under Arians and the Bucs would be back in the playoff hunt! Just upgrade the Oline a bit…add Conklin in free agency….bring Barret, Suh and JPP back on defense….and draft JK Dobbins or another top RB….and we are in business.

Jason Licht could save his job and erase some of the mistakes he has made recently by making this happen!

  32. Pa Privateer Says:

    Wishful Thinking……

    Transition Tag Winston

TRADE: Winston for Carr straight up

    Draft: Mid Round QB

  33. mark2001 Says:

Rumor mentioned last night…Brady being offered deal by Oakland. You can’t pay for two starting franchise QB’s.

Agree Pa…transition Winston…if he comes in at 20 mil from some other team, you can match…and you save a boatload of money to keep that D intact.

  34. Jeagan1999 Says:

No one knows for sure if Carr will become available, but if he did, I would jump on a trade deal immediately. For those who maybe have not seen a lot of Carr, he IS a big upgrade over Winston! He may not have the stronger arm of the 2, but here is where he has the distinct advantage over Jameis…
    1. Accuracy: Carr completed over 70% of his passes for over 4,000 yds last season (and no, they’re not just dink and dunk screen passes….watch some games from last year). He had 21 TD’s and only 8 INTS…almost a 3:1 ratio!
    2. Touch: Carr has amazing touch on his passes. He can zip the fastball into tight windows, or float the high ones for his receivers to run under down the field. Winston tries to drill every pass and has never developed the touch needed to allow WR’s time to get open.
    3. Quick Release: Carr has the third quickest release among active NFL QB’s….behind Tom Brady and Jimmy Garrapolo! He gets the ball out of his hand so fast…without the awkward windup and release Winston has!
    4. Anticipation: Carr is so good at putting the ball right on guys when they come out of their cuts! He can anticipate as well as some of the longtime veteran QB’s like Brady and Brees.

    Carr would thrive under Arians.

  35. Marine Buc Says:

Derrick Carr threw 22 less interceptions than Winston. Think about that for a moment before you say anything else… 22 less interceptions. I would take Carr add a running back and RT, keep the defense and add a safety.

  36. Marine Buc Says:

    @ PA

We can’t trade Winston. He does not currently have a contract with the Bucs.

  37. Mr. Reality Says:

Joe, Fair enough! You go! Capitalism is a great thing and you are getting the full bounty.

  38. Mr. Reality Says:

BigHog…Winston should own up to his mistakes…no “I’m ballin'” and “Check your sheet” stuff. No nonsense comments about God/Jesus, quitting drinking comments, etc. He has it all there when it comes to his desire to play football. But here is the thing. You want to be “the man” playing a kids game making obscene money, the the rest of your stuff better on top. You better own up, be humble, and walk the talk. He talks the talk, know what I’m saying? You are not helping him by that jackhammer stuff. That dude wrote a book saying how good the man is, is not helping him. He didn’t help himself. He is not a man yet. Baby, all that. does not make him a man. You can’t lead by cheap talk. One day Winsston will learn that. I hope (for him) his agent isn’t talking the same smack. Because it’s a losing thing.

  39. Proudbucsfan Says:

@Marine Buc, If the Bucs tag Winston they can use him in a trade.

Carr would be a huge upgrade over Winston.

  44. Dapostman Says:

I bet Mike Glennon and his great TD/INT ratio is available. Why is the QB guru inquiring about him?

We know the ladies from the View hate TO’s so Glennon should be their guy.

    *isn’t

  46. Bonzo Says:
