“Value”

January 24th, 2020

Gets props.

When teams get into the second day of the draft, expecting a star player is a bit of a fantasy. But what teams can reasonably hope for is a solid player to add value.

Well, the PFF tribe thinks the Bucs did that this past spring with a cornerback.

Typing for BSPN, the tribe notes that yes, inside linebacker Devin White got a lot of buzz for his play against the run as a No. 5 pick (the tribe scolded him for his below-average coverage work). However, Cris Collinsworth’s numberscrunchers think the Bucs’ best draft pick last year was a cornerback on the second day of the draft, Jamel Dean.

From Week 10 through the end of the season, Dean (No. 94 overall) forced incompletions on more than 30% of his targets and allowed a passer rating of just 29.1. Not bad for a third-round pick.

The biggest thing with Dean is health. Along with steady Carlton Davis and Sean Murphy-Bunting, all he does is make plays, this offseason is strange to Joe.

Why? When is the last time the Bucs can say that cornerback is a strength? Maybe not since Rondé Barber and Aqib Talib were playing? Seems like a lifetime ago.

Didnt Arians said that before the season started and we all called him incompetent for saying it?

smitty couldnt develop CBs to save @realists life!!!!!!!….lol…..

as long as we re-sign shaq, jpp and suh, secondary will continue to improve…..

    GO BUCS!!!!!

With DSMB we have some strong cornerback play going into the 2020 season, that doesn’t by any means that we should be ok with what we have, injuries always seem to take its toll!!! KEEP bringing in talent by free a gen you and through the draft and 2020 Is The Year Of The BUC!!!

OT/OG (If Guard Kappa slides to tackle)
    DT
    S
    RB
    DE

Go any combination of these with our first 5 picks (using Best Player Available)
and lets keep this train moving in the right direction!!

I really am excited about the young DB’s and think the future is bright. I loved the stories about how they all caught the “film bug” during this past season, and could not get enough study. That bodes extremely well for the future of this Defense.

  7. Buccernutter Says:

I remember getting into a heated argument with someone who said he was a bust after seattle. lol

Even last year, cb was a weakness. Bowles/licht knocked this draft out the park. Bet you you wont see people praising licht though for it.

  8. NOLES Says:

Well I agree & they loom good.. but was JL thinking w MJ Stewart.. I know u miss some but picking him ahead of Davis is a head scratcher

  9. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

^^ On that point, Buccernutter, I was so impressed with the way Jamel Dean bounced back from that Seattle game. Bowles could not get Dean out of his office. He wanted to know everything, and know it NOW. —- He bounced back in a big way, and the future is bright.

  10. Buccernutter Says:

    Yep, he has elite potential.

    Just hope he stays healthy.

I dislike this concept of “value”. The bottom line is does the pick live up to expectations not did we get a great deal with a lower pick like Kwon. Steals like that and UDFA’s like Brate and Hump are fine…but at the end it’s did you get your man.

I love Jamel Dean but he is going to have a fraction of the impact on our D that Devin White will have.

I was EXTREMELY vocal of my utter hatred of this draft class at the time. Boy was I wrong! If these corners continue their trajectory, this will turn out to be Licht’s best draft class yet.

  14. Joe in Michigan Says:

I’m happy the way the young CB’s progressed through the year. Question about MJ Stewart…Does anyone think he could be a decent Safety, or do you think he’s a sunk cost?

  15. Buczilla Says:

We need to treat the running back position the same way we treated the cornerback position the last couple of years. Draft at least two running backs this year Licht! No need to overpay in free agency.

I remember when BA said the Secondary is Fixed an everyone laughed who’s laughing now Trust In BA
