Quarterback Projection

January 24th, 2020

Predicts Bucs QB for 2020.

There seems to be a lot more teams this year looking or potentially looking for quarterbacks with some big names on the free agent market.

Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Philip Rivers, Jameis Winston.

So heavy metal headbanging Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports decided which teams will have which quarterbacks barking signals for them this fall.

And for the Bucs, it will be a guy who resides in Florida.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Philip Rivers. I hear that Bruce Arians is quite intrigued by Rivers. He hears great things about him from his old pal Ken Whisenhunt, who used to coach Rivers, and the veteran would come much cheaper than what the much younger Jameis Winston would like to command. Arians prefers veterans and this would be akin to when he got Carson Palmer in Arizona. BA is year-to-year at this point and breaking in a rookie QB is less than ideal. This brings Rivers way closer to his Alabama roots and he’s already moving to Florida. Yeah, he turns the ball over a ton, like Winston, but has a Hall of Fame type resume. As for Jameis …

Can we please stop this nonsense that Rivers is coming to the Bucs because he lives in Destin? Can people not work Google Maps?

This just in: New Orleans (who may need a new quarterback) is much closer to Destin than Tampa. Nashville (Titans) may need a quarterback. That city is about the same distance from Destin as Tampa.

Hell, Atlanta is closer to Destin than Tampa. Yes, Destin is in Florida but that doesn’t mean it’s close to Tampa. Rivers didn’t move to Bradenton for crying out loud.

As for La Canfora saying Arians prefers veterans, well, Joe’s not fully sure about that. It’s not like Jameis is a rookie. Besides, Arians didn’t squawk when he worked with Andrew Luck and Peyton Manning right out of college, and he also worked with Ben Roethlisberger when he was young.

What is sort of amusing is that La Canfora predicts Mr. Entertainment will be playing next year in the Entertainment Capital of the World. Jameis in Vegas.

Jameis and Chucky.

If that happens, you can bank on the Bucs playing the Raiders in Vegas early in the season and likely on Monday Night Football.

If that happens, bank in our defense turning Jameis over for the win!!! Just load the box and make him throw it to beat you. There will be points aplenty- for both teams.

  2. miken Says:

none of the above will happen.

  3. El Buco Realisto Says:

This is what happens when ole stale biscuit who was hired as a “win now” coach and has a LOSING Season!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, and since we are talking about truth, and facts, The Bucs had more passing yards in 2018, more passing TD’s in 2018, and less Interceptions in 2018!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!-

  4. ClodHopper Says:

I’m not saying Rivers ain’t coming to Tampa. No one knows. But when everyone hops on the same fortune telling story, it’s a sure sign of a laziness epidemic.

  5. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

“It’s not like Jameis is a rookie” ….??? First NFL pass? Pick 6. Last NFL pass? Pick 6. Nothing has changed. He plays like a rookie.

  6. Steven007 Says:

Joe, there are 50 states in the continental US. Rivers is moving into the same state that our team resides. He is literally a 1 hour Glazer plane flight to Tampa, less time than he used to spend on the road in his vehicle traveling to the chargers facility. Obviously the move doesn’t mean he is a Buc but let’s not pretend that means nothing.

  7. tmaxcon Says:

Nothing would be more buc like than glazers kicking out jameis christ winston for washed up qb. at least it clears the way, for the true savior to have a chance at the postseason and earning his first ring at the goat pasture formerly known as rayjay. Jameis the bays only true savior and hope will be successful once paroled from the most embarrassing sports franchise on planet earth. Watching jameis christ earn his first playoff game while low standard bucfan makes excuses for another failed season will be priceless

  8. Sharthappens Says:

Retard JW would have already need signed if he was stating

  9. Sharthappens Says:

    Staying^^^

  10. Buccnbeliever Says:

Why on earth does anyone think Rivers will make it into the HOF?

  11. Hodad Says:

Chucky’s head would explode if he had a QB who threw 30 picks in a season. If he wanted to work with Winston, the Glazers would’ve paid him the 100 million to fix their mistake of firing him in the first place. Everyone in the NFL knows you can’t win with a turnover prone QB except the Bucs, and Joe.

  12. 813bucboi Says:

  15. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

Destin is a short flight to Tampa

Clueless Joe is stuck in an old way of thinking that the ultra rich just drive to work…

What’s to say Rivers can’t rent a house for the season? I’d say you are better than that Joe but you clearly aren’t

  16. tmaxcon Says:

low standard bucfan has been trained well by the glazers…. let’s toss the leader of a top ranked offense who is 25 for a bum who has NEVER won anything meaningful with better teams and organization. yep that is the buccaneer way… get rid of the guy with a bright future and 10 to 15 years of playing time for a bum who maybe has 2 years left… glad you low standard losers are not managing financial portfolios for a living…. if you see the value in rivers over jameis I will just assume you take your wife to chuck e cheese for anniversary dinners. most likely supervised by the public health department chaperones.

  17. Pewter power Says:

I’m sure nfl executives sit back and laugh at media and writers a lot. Might as well try to get a rookie quarterback because it wouldn’t be any different with winston rookie mistakes

We are better to to bottom than Atlanta except at quarterback. Freeman is a bigger name but jones rushed for more yards so why is it we finished 3rd in the division? Bad quarterback play. Consistently spotting teams points and great field position along with penalties leading the league. O line and quarterback is the weakness of this team. Sounds like a lot of hope because everyone automatically assumes winston will get better as if it’s not possible for it to go the other way.

  18. Ocala Says:

His predictions seem more like click bait than reality

  19. El Buco Realisto Says:

    @813broccoli

A losing season is a losing season, the only difference is draft position!!!!!!!!!!!! With an easier schedule and not having the starting qb suspended, it is quite embarrassing by the “win now coach”!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know numbers are hard for you, but we don’t blame you. We blame the public school system!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. TampaTown Says:

Talking about Rivers is like talking about adopting a 13 year old dog from the Humane Society. You’re only bringing him home to die.

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It would make more sense just to draft a rookie QB and save the money…….saving 20 million would go a long way toward resigning our Defense, taking care of Godwin and Perriman.

Could we win with a rookie?……Perhaps

Unless we can save at least $10 mil with Rivers, it makes no sense…..and we would still have to draft a QB.

  22. stpetebucsfan Says:

I take Joe’s point about the distance to Destin because I had to drive there this summer for a wedding.

But it’s a lot closer to Alabama than San Diego. As for Tampa..it’s not about the drive I…a mere mortal..had to make.

If you guys purchase a NetJet or other card for about 200,000 you get to fly up to 25 hours in a very nice PRIVATE JET.

    https://www.netjets.com/en-us/private-jet-lease-program

It “only” takes about a million for a nice 3BR/2bath Condo on Harbour Island.

So while Joe is correct if you use driving distance…commute time and a nice place to live are WELL within Rivers current 80 million net worth. Of course his 2020 contract can be worked to include some of this as a “benefit”.

Here is actually the critical sentence from La Canfora….

“the veteran would come much cheaper than what the much younger Jameis Winston would like to command.”

That COULD be what decides any deal. JW may be the target and this could just all be smoke and mirrors for contract leverage….but…

At his final press conference River came across as a guy who wants to PROVE that the past season…disappointing by his standards..was an aberration that can be corrected and WILL be corrected in 2020. He wants to play!!!

More important than Destin’s location relative to Alabama and Tampa…is which team gives Rivers his best opportunity. Is there any other team that even comes close to the Bucs…WR’s…improved D…coach with the same motivation as Rivers…win NOW.

If all that motivates Rivers enough to play for say 15 million and some sweet incentives so as to not bust the cap..and JW even mentions 30 million and demands a multi year contract…JW lovers better hold their breath through these contract negotiations.

D.R. How much do incentives count against the cap…obviously they aren’t paid until after the season..do they count on next year’s cap? If Rivers accepted a two year deal at 15 million with 7-8 Million in incentives what is the cap hit?
Does the CBA even permit that much in incentives.

  25. Posey99 Says:

People saying rivers is washed up are very foolish. Injuries on Oline and melvin gordon out basically all season. Look at his years prior. The funny thing is he’s still has the most fire in his belly to win than any QB in the league and you can bet rivers wants a superbowl. Rivers also see’s how talented our weapons are on offense. We instantly become a playoff team, folks. Also how many weeks this past season did rivers lead the league in passing yards? (for the passing yard nerds)

  26. Razor Ramone Says:

I read somewhere that the Las Vegas death star might not be ready until after week 6. PFT I believe.

  27. Duh Says:

The funny thing is he’s still has the most fire in his belly to win than any QB in the league and you can bet Winston wants a superbowl. Winston also knows how talented our weapons are on offense. We instantly become a playoff team, folks. Also how many weeks this past season did Winston lead the league in passing yards? (for the passing yard nerds

  28. Craig Says:

Can we start some other rumor here? Rivers will play one more season as a Charger and try to show Justin Herbert how to be consistent. Then he will retire.

How about Matt Moore? He likes south Florida and might end up being a coach. Get him started on the right foot by mentoring the Bucs next great hope, whoever that might be.

  29. D-Rome Says:

The NFL off season is the time of year where everyone in the media goes full retard. Destin is probably the one place in Florida where, apart from being close to family, he wouldn’t be tied to any QB position in Florida. Even Jacksonville is nearly five hours away from Destin.

  35. tnew Says:

This comparison to Palmer… so lazy. Carson Palmer was 34 when he went to AZ. Heck, Rivers is only two years younger than Palmer. Might as well just sign Carson Palmer himself.

  36. MTM Says:

Rivers having a home in Destin does not mean he is too far away to join the Bucs. News flash NFL players have more than one home. Rivers is most likely living close to many potential teams so he is covered. Florida has no state tax so he will take home more than residing in LA. The Glazers can afford to pay Rivers, draft a QB and resign some players. If they kept Americas Turnover Machine they would be unable to resign as many players.

  37. Ocala Says:

I highly doubt this is accurate. If the Bucs exchange Winston for Rivers then this franchise really is doomed for perpetual failure.

  38. thisisouryear!! Says:

Let’s get real, Rivers coming to Tampa over the other locations is much more likely. New Orleans has two QB’s they would like to keep, Atlanta isn’t signing Rivers, and you have to think Tennessee likes Tannehill. Not that I necessarily think he’s coming here, but I think it’s realistic. I can’t imagine Arians wanting to keep Winston. He realizes that the turnovers are mental and he knows it’s not something he can fix mechanically.

I’d rather Bridgewater or Dalton if it were me.

  39. Buccaneerscotty Says:

Get over it joe you girlfriend is leaving

  40. stpetebucsfan Says:

Agree with your post. All excellent points. And Dalton would be my choice as well. He’s worked with a great receiver before in Green and he’s been to the playoffs.

Is it from a prior exchange that I did not see? If not could you highlight what you felt was racist. I’m honestly curious.

‘Looking for big names such as Jameis Winston.’

I have yet to find anywhere that people are predicting him to their team and their fans expressing excitement and raving about it…

I am surprised at the number of people who seem to get excited about the idea of Eason being drafts to the Bucs… Maybe it will come to pass and Eason will be everything and more that Bucs fans are yearning for in a quality QB!

  46. ArmandoG Says:

Fantasy: Franchise Jameis – sign Phillip to short contract (3 years), bad Jameis sits and learns under Phillip or good Jamies play like a rockstar and Phillip is a back up. If JW doesn’t work out – you have Rivers for the next season

  47. stpetebucsfan Says:

There is an issue behind all of this that has barely been mentioned.

2020 is the end! The end of the current CBA. We’ve had lockouts and walkouts in past CBA negotiations.

In the last negotiation the owners had decided to opt out of the deal and lock out the players after 2010 in an effort to swing the revenue split back in their favor. They did just that.

They waited until the last minute…feelings were bruised and so this time both sides got a head start…they’ve already begun a year ago. Not much solid speculation on how they are going.

This is truly the wild card….especially if the Bucs lock themselves into a long term deal with JW. Someone said that 30 is going to become the new 40…perhaps…only time will tell.

  48. gilhealy Says:

Dapostman, you’re right. Actual belly laughs. TampaTown had a beauty as well.

  49. Big Stinky Says:

Winstonites are like a cult trying to get me to join. Just drink the Kool aid and leave me out of it. No matter what stats you throw out there they pale in comparison to the main problem, the picks. In year 5 there are glaring problems and the turnovers will continue. I see a QB that stares down his receivers, forces throws, has bad ball placement, and STILL thinks he can make any throw. That’s a recipe for more of the same. Please God!!! Let this rumor be true. I never thought of Rivers as a good QB but he HAS been to the Playoffs multiple times and I have more faith in him than Jameis at this point. Every year I hope JW3 puts it together but deep down know what to expect. Hate to say I never wanted him but we just Drafted a QB in 2013 that NEVER got to compete for the starting job. All those extra picks we could have had if we traded down that year. If Glennon played bad in year 3 after an off season with the first team offense you get Wentz or Prescott in 2016. Licht is REALLY bad at his job evaluating players in case you Winstonites need reminding. That silly bitch had a QB that could have been just as good as Jameis. Maybe he thought Winston had more upside but you don’t give up on a QB after 2 years with 29 TD’s and 15 INT’S. I blame Lovie just as much as I blame JL for what happened with Glennon. That stupid ass story about Lovie and Tedford watching the National Championship in his basement in 2013 before getting the job. That bullchit he said about bringing McClown here to mentor MG8. Why? To tank for Winston obviously. Glennon played better than McClown that Preseason and already started 13 games the year before. He threw 19 TD’S and ONLY 9 INT’S as a rookie and that wasn’t good enough for ANY of you. Eat chit and the turnovers continue. Give him a running game that gains over 2000 yards and he throws 15 INT’S vs 22 TD’S and wins 6 games. Take away the running game and give him a defense that is No.1 on 3rd down for most of the year and you get 28 TD’S vs 18 INT’S and still ONLY 9 wins. Only 3 wins in 13 games for 2017 but he was hurt. An excuse if you ask me. If he wasn’t 100% bench him, Fitzpatrick was just as good as Jameis. Had a 10 game losing streak begin in 2017. Regressed his 4th year in the same offense, 14 picks in 9 starts and relief in 2 more. Took a massive nose dive in Arians offense throwing 3+ picks 5 times with 4+ in three of them. I think he only threw 4+ picks a total of 3 times in his first 4 years. Winston handed our opponents 98 points this year and it could have easily been more. Of the 15 times he gave the ball to the other team inside our 30 they scored TD’S only 5 times and 5 other times our defense forced a turnover. Long post again. Hate trying to make a point in a post. Just glad it might finally be over with. Lift the Glennon curse with a new QB!!!!

Destin is a lot closer to Tampa Bay than California! It’s a lot closer to Tampa Bay than to most NFL cities. So stop trying to argue this away. Rivers can hop on a plane in Tampa and be home in an hour. That’s way better than the 5 hour flight across multiple time zones to California. So yeah, Tampa Bay makes a whole lot more sense than it did before the move. I swear you use selective logic in all of your arguments. CHERRY PICK CHERRY PICK

  56. Big Stinky Says:

  62. Big Stinky Says:

Have to say I love the optomists that you Winstonites are. I think you are ALL crazy after what I have watched for 5 years, but hey, keep up the good fight. The writing is on the wall, Arians warned you he could win with another QB and expect just that. The key to that QB or Jameis winning was the defense was going to be good. Funny thing is, we were in salary cap hell for the first time last year paying $21 million to Winston. Expect that from now on if you sign him for ANY period of time. As for that defense Arians wants to keep together. Sorry to have to tell you ALL this but it is NOT happening unless we get a rookie QB and a cheap veteran. Shaq, Suh, and JPP will cost $20+ million more than last year for a total of close to $45 million. I think that’s about half of what we have to spend on filling 19 FA’s spots. Gonna be a lot of new faces next year hopefully including QB. Pick 6 on his first pass as a Buc and a pick 6 on his last pass more than likely. You just can’t make this stuff up if you tried.

  63. J Says:

    Can we work google maps? LOL…Joe, R. E. L. A. X.

Again, it’s not unheard of for players to rent homes closer to where they’re playing WHEN they’re playing.

Can we work google maps…Give your soapbox a rest on this one Joe.

  64. Jean Lafitte Says:

Joe might want to try to ignore it or chastise anyone who might think it, but what does this really say about Winston? When the consensus has Rivers coming to Tampa because Winston can’t get it done. I think this is more a testimony on Winston and his claim for an elite contract. JW is pricing himself out of Tampa. Good riddance if it happens.

  65. Big Stinky Says:

    Tval

Never wanted either of those QB’S but hey, make chit up like that game manager BS in his last offense. He has been a game manager a handful of times in 70 games just so we are clear. Throwing 30-40+ passes most games because he turns the ball over early or has slow starts and we fall behind is not a game manager. Always been a gunslinger in the NFL. Both offenses were vertical with longer developing routes. Do you and Maxi pad see anything wrong with him at all? Guess not the way you both like to insult people that don’t agree with you. What’s with the rubber dildo Maxi pad? I see you need help! Man you say some f***ed up chit sometimes.

  66. Bradinator Says:

Please stop. Geography is NOT an indicator of where someone might play next year. I do not imagine it is a topic of conversation for ANY Gm when scouting or considering players. “Yeah, he has a great arm, makes excellent reads, and stands tall in the pocket, but he lives too far away for us to consider.” “Well, how bout Rivers then? he lives closer”. That conversation or any similar ones, has NEVER happened once in the history of the NFL. get a grip, people!

  67. tmaxcon Says:

    Stink

There is nothing wrong with Jameis Christ Winston. He is the ONLY TRUE savior that fairy tale book misprinted the name and it stuck creating confusion in fantasy land. but make no mistake jamies is the savior.

His turnovers are easily dismissed based on the horrendous coaching staffs, offensive line and defensive units he has had to endure during his time with the minor league glazer franchise.

  70. BucEmUp Says:

Yeah, he turns the ball over a ton, like Winston, but has a Hall of Fame type resume. As for Jameis …

ONLY THE BUCS WOULD BE DUMB ENOUGH TO MAKE A LATERAL MOVE WITH LESS UPSIDE!!!!!

If the defense plays the same as the second half, and the running game gets fixed, it’s playoff time 100%. Don’t be stupid Bruce.

  71. Buc4evr Says:

@tampatown. So true. LOL. If the Bucs are going to dump Jameis, bringing in Rivers is not the answer. He is worse than Jameis and has no arm strength. Wouldn’t fit into a vertical game and would get killed with our O-line. Yep, I expect the Bucs to do something this stupid.

  72. BucEmUp Says:

Realist….the only remaining problem is Leftwich not Jameis or Bruce. I think Arians did a fair job as a head coach, but he is at his best when calling plays. Leftwich is out of his league and will be out of this league when he and Bruce get fired for making the same mistake that Koetter made….LOYALTY!!!!!

Leftwich still sucks. Its not Byrons offense so you cannot give him credit for that, and he does a crap job calling the offense. It took him HALF THE YEAR to finally read a rule book and learn that it wasn’t mandatory to run the ball up the middle for a first down and only have one WR lined up outside when he did. He also learned that it was acceptable to actually throw screens halfway through as well.

You think Mike Smith would have gotten the same results out of a 2nd year corner and two rookies to finish the season off with a strong secondary? There are a lot more reason for the losses than just int’s. Part of me hopes Winston goes to New England and wins a Super Bowl is first year just to see the haters vanish.

  73. D1 Says:

    Buc4ever,

Rivers lead the NFL in air yards to target. He’s been in a vertical offense for years and threw for 4600+ yds last year and has season after season of 4000yd production.

Does Rivers have a better arm than winston? No He doesn’t, but that hasn’t stopped him from pushing the ball downfield in the same scheme as the bucs use. 4600yds is great but considering he threw half of that in the air, more than winston, not bad for a weak armed senior citizen.

The sack issue is not a problem. The Bucs oline was far superior to the Chargers last year. Rivers isn’t on I.R. , didn’t break a thumb or suffer a shoulder injury. I’m guessing He will just slide by here.

To say He can’t play in a vertical offense tells me you don’t know anything about the Chargers. Then again, few people outside San Diego follow the team. Yet, everyone on jbf seems to be experts on Rivers and the Chargers. How is that?

I see the Winston knob gobblers are working overtime lately spreading their nasty Winston propaganda. I’ve never seen such a sorry lot as the Winston nut huggers. Pathetic would be a compliment. I imagine them sitting there at their parent’s house with a stained, 2 sizes too small fsu t shirt from 2013 and their bellies hanging out. Disgusting. Buncha trolls. Most turnovers in the league since he came into the league. Dude is damaged broken goods.
