Can Jameis Winston be fixed?

The fact that fixing a quarterback who has made 70 NFL starts under well-established offensive coaches is a popular discussion, well, that’s a whole different topic.

All kinds of NFL heavyweights are serving up thoughtful takes on America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, and put Michael Vick in that mix. He’s the legendary former No. 1 overall pick quarterback who spent 13 years in the NFL sandwiched around a federal prison sentence.

Vick works for FOX and spoke this week about how he likes that Jameis publicly acknowledges his mistakes, is fearless in his game and works tirelessly.

But Vick sees a guy who needs help with the mental side of the game. That’s “the fix” needed, Vick said, and he feels good about the coaches around Jameis assigned to make that happen.

“The one thing he has to learn to do is sometimes say, “No.” In the moment it’s not easy to do,” Vick said. “You have to make a decision on the field when everything is going 100 miles an hour. But you can pull it down and you can run it. And you can throw it away. And that’s part of the fix.”

Better decisions. Bucs fans have been hearing about that hole in Jameis’ game for five seasons.

No, Joe doesn’t think Jameis will improve much in the area of decision-making. But Joe does think Jameis can build further on the positives in his game during Year 2 in Bruce Arians’ offense, starting with improved chemistry with receivers, which subsequently will improve his play.

Should the Jameis-Godwin chemistry be better next season? Yes. And the same goes for Breshad Perriman, if the Bucs pony up the cash to keep him, in addition to work with youngsters Scotty Miller and Justin Watson who are now much less raw than they were in September and October.

The historic Mike Evans/Jameis connection grows annually, and Evans is always willing to put in the time.

Improve at running back, maintain the receiving corps, and the defensive level of the second-half of this season, and Joe sees no reason why Jameis can’t be a 32-touchdown, 20-interception guy leading a playoff team.

Of course, that’s if the Bucs keep Jameis and don’t prefer a better ball-security quarterback.

    we have heard this song before joe, in fact since jameis has got drafted, it’s not like he was drafted 22nd or in the 2nd 3rd round, the sob is a # 1 pick and you would think he would get it by now, i have been a big time supporter of winston, until this season, i am done, his swan song was enough, and i’m talking about his press conference after the game, he’s arrogant, combative, in denial, angry, or any other adjective or metaphor or label you would like to put on him, he will do what he has done, there is no fix, he is what he is, time to move on people, unless you want to be detroit south, oh yeah we already are!!!

    Foles was questionable but at least he was a Super Bowl MVP.

    Wishful thinking joe. It was all there in this one game. The defense he would need the line protection and the improved run game you speak of they were all working in this one game. You had all those things and he still made the bad decision on the final play of the game so improvement around him wont make him be smarter with the football

    If a 5th year guy is throwing that many more picks than everyone else including rookies he is useless. Working on the mental side after 5 years seriously?

    I do too think Jameis problems are mental. However, what do the Bucs do. Do they go out and sign some big time free agent See K Cousin, N Foles and Kennum. Big money free agents who haven’t done nothing for what they have got paid. So we need to be careful of what we wish for. I think we should tag Jameis draft QB and develop him over next season or maybe the first 6 to 7 games and in this way the transition should be better when they move on from Jameis

    If you’re going to analyze Jameis, it’s not as simple as “he throws too many picks.” That is lazy analysis. Go back and watch all of Jameis interceptions this season. 19 of them were of the bad throw/bad read/bad decision variety, which yes is more than most qb’s. But, Jameis threw the ball more than anyone this year. If you average 40 throws a game you’re going to have a pick.
    7 were tip ups gifted to the other team by his receivers, three were just great defensive plays. The rest were heaves at the end of half/game that you can’t really pin on him.
    Joe hit the nail on the head – even look at Jameis career averages and you have a 30 TD 18 int a year qb. His TD percentage this year more or less stayed the same as his career AVG while his int % climbed almost 1.5%. It’s not a stretch to say playing in a new system and then losing two all pro receivers and have a broken thumb had something to do with that. Also, lots of bad luck (deflections, line of scrimmage tip ups, etc)
    It would actually be completely idiotic and mindless to not give Jameis Winston one more year in Tampa to show he’s been a victim of circumstance. We’ll tolerate him until we can replace him, which right now we can’t, and once we have a running game and D, you’ll see that most people won’t want to.

    They can help him by getting a running game.

    If he is able to do that, they make the playoffs. If that happens long-term deal. If it doesn’t, do everything they possibly can to draft Trevor Lawrence

    I think that’s it right there. To win a championship the man with the ball has to make good decisions. Jameis doesn’t spread the ball around very well. He locks onto the same receiver almost every game. And he locks onto them with his eyes. For a defense, he’s too easy to predict.

    Tell him, it’s his choice…..take it or be tagged.
    Let him know that the tag is needed for another player and forcing the Bucs to tag Jameis would hurt the team.

    How does Kevin Kiermaier make those fantastic catches in center field. His eyes see the pitch, his eyes see the swing, his eyes see the ball’s direction, his ears hear the sound of contact, his brain tells his body to pivot and his legs to start running.

    There are dozens of instantaneous calculations made before he leaps up next to the fence and makes the grab. Then his eyes and brain tell him what to do with the ball.

    If Kevin had untreated near sightedness, he would be delivering packages for Fedex.

    Jameis needs to fix his eyes before he gets paid!

    Here is what I would term “a bucs life”; Having a D line that is great, having a rookie secondary that was horrible the 1st 8 games, but made great strides in the last 8 games. So much so that we fans are excited to see these rookies next season. Then we come to a QB that has played 80 games for the Bucs and is worse than he was in his 1st season. Yet the bucs are considering paying the QB so much money that we cannot re-sign all of our good players. Now that is a Bucs life! It’s a shame that the rookies learned and played so much better within 16 games, while the ” QB” that has not learned or played any better in “80” games is even being considered for next year.

Fun fact… Jameis Winston is the 11th QB in history to throw at least 30 interceptions in a season. Uh oh.. this is where it gets fun… in the 20 TD-30 INT club,1/4th are HoF Quarterbacks. Now if we loosen the standards a little bit, drop 2 INTs and make it 28 INTs club. We can add hall of fame qb’s Brett Farve, Joe Namath(twice), Y. A. Tittle, and Ken Stabler… and future HoF Peyton Manning.

    The problem with the franchise tag is that even if he improves people are going to say “well can he do it for more than one year” Kirk got franchised twice and let him walk. For QBs I think the franchise tag is just delaying the inevitable. Either he is your guy or he’s not. Give him a 3 yr deal at 32 in 2-3 years it will be affordable and you can trade him for pick.     Put simply, LESS Jameis=more wins. Less Jameis also means less yards, less TDs, AND less turnovers.
    There is no “fixing” Jameis. For the team to win, they must build on the defensive improvements and take the ball out of Jameis’ hands and establish the run-game. That is of course if they intend to keep Jameis.
    The stats bear it out. 35 or less pass attempts by Jameis increases our chances of winning by double, according to the statistics.
    I’ll say it again, you are not going to change Jameis. Change the team around him. Would you rather have another 5,000 yards and 7-9 season or 4,000 yards and an 11-5 season? It’s not a trick question.
    At the end of the day, individual stats and records are irrelevant if the team doesn’t win.

    The stadium is about 2/3 to 3/5 full, and the Bucs don’t even sell the top five or either rows of the top decks this year. They don’t even have all concessions open, nor all turnstyles. It has been MUCH worse since 2017 (last three seasons) than it was between 2014-2016. Worst since 2010 in the blackout era. Season ticket holders dropped dramatically after the 2017 season, which is when the Uber news on Winston came out. The kneeldowns made it worse. At the end of 2018, even more left. The 2017 numbers in attendance are inflated because the Bucs still tried to give thousands of tickets away. And then, they found out they couldn’t GIVE them away. There is a lot of creativity with published attendance numbers. But you can bet Winston end of 2018 and into 2019 has been a big factor in killing this fan base. Bucs lowering some ticket prices and bringing in Arians helped stop some of the bleeding. Winston is one of the reasons fans aren’t coming back. If the Bucs sign him for yet another year, you can bet response will be flat, at best.

    I would love to see us invest in the run game, start with 0-line, and what about Derrick Henry, he will be looking at free agency. Keep Rojo and he may have a break out year in year 2 of BA/Byron system. Less crazy asss pass plays and more run plays –obviously if Jameis is throwing less he is intercepting less. what do we expect with a qb that throws for 5000+ yards-of course he has way more picks. I see good in keeping Jameis and good in getting another qb. My best advice is — draft o-line first pick(tackle) after trading down about 5 or so spots, get Jacob Eason in round 2. Franchise tag Winston, sign Barret to a contract that allows us to cut him easy in a couple years just in case he is a 1 year wonder.Free agency running back. Like to have a year for new qb to learn BA system.

    Justin Herbert is a college quarterback… playing against college football players. He is also not a Heisman trophy winner. This year, Herbert has a passer rating of 158.7. 66.7% completion rate, 3,333 yards, 32 touchdowns, 5 interceptions. The Oregon ducks are 11-2, and not playing in the REAL bowl game. He has played 4 years in college.

    Jameis Winston is an NFL Quarterback, but for arguments sake… we will go to his freshman year in College and compare him to the more experienced Justin Herbert. Jameis Winston is a Heisman Trophy Winner.. he has a passer rating of 184.8. 66.9% completion rate, 4,057 yards, 40 tds, 10 interceptions. The Florida State Seminoles are 14-0, BCS Champions…

    Thank you for bringing that fact to the discussion.

    The common answer to fixing the issue is to run the ball more thus reducing his total passing attempts. This makes sense only if the stats show a strong relationship between number of attempts and number of interceptions. Fans by in large have overlooked this prerequisite as they attempt to offer suggestions on how to reduce dramatically Winston’s total interceptions.

    Facts are, this year winston has more picks in the first half than the second. The number of interceptions is identical in the 1st qtr and the 4th. Right away it’s clear that no relationship exist between his attempts and turnovers. The rate is not dependent on the total number of attempts per game. The overall totals are but that’s not what the problem /solutions are attempting to fix.

    Point is reducing his attempts will lower his overall totals but it will not affect the percentage of interceptions. If this isn’t clear enough let me break it down by simply stating, reducing Winston’s attempts will not eliminate his turnover issues. It will merely mask it, at best.

    Winston’s inceptions are not the result of volume. Therefore, any solution to the problem must begin somewhere other than reduced volume. So far, I’ve seen zero comments or suggestions that actually deal with the why and how.
    90%+ offer ways to mitigate the total number of interceptions which unfortunately, continues to propagate the causes and thus frequency. Problem never goes away.

Peyton Manning’s running game in his first five years produced 1,300, 1,700, 1,500, 1,500, and 1,300. All yards resulted from one running back.     I wouldn’t presume to answer for joe.
    But if it’s OK by you to take a shot .

    First, I’d point out its correct that Mannings first 5 years interceptions totals may be more than Winston’s. But it’s not exactly an accurate comparison. In fact, it’s very misleading.

    Second, the RB you claim produced all those yards is Edge James. Well, that too is incorrect. His 3rd and 4th years combined rushing yards were appx. 1500.

    Third, you pose the question as manning figured it out, so why can’t winston!
    What did manning figure out?

    If you can’t identify ” it ” then how do we tell when winston does?

    What’s the it? If you’re, it seems clear that you are, basing the figured it out on results , then there’s nothing other than results to consider.

    Subsequently, this nullifies the premise that Manning figured something out and if winston does he will have the same success. Because it’s only source of verification is the results.

    The i won’t hold my breath comment leads me to believe you feel your reasoning is somehow sound and you’ve posed an argument with no possible answer other than the one you want. That’s not the basis for a legitimate discussion. It’s a belief that your opinion is the only correct one. Ego driven but to what ends.

    My point is that if you believe that your opinion is unassailable in its logic and facts, then it’s relevant you begin with the correct information. The problem is you presented your ironclad arguement with inaccurate and incorrect facts to start. How is anyone to take your side seriously when you can’t even get the basics correct. Moreover, where does this sense of superiority come from ? Surely, not from any command of the most basic facts. Definitely not from the lack of understanding what factors contributed to and ultimately lead to a turnaround in Mannings career. Clearly, you have no clue what those may be. So why the attitude?

    I’m not trying to be insulting. Rather, I’m pointing out that it’s better to state your case and be open to the answers you get. There’s no reason to be rude or dismissive of an opinion you don’t yet know.     Hearing him talk about how he’s “ballin” after CHOKING away what easily could have been a winning season was just rubbing salt into the wound.

    The Bucs own coaches have said 11+ INTs were not on Jameis but rreceivers, if those didn’t happen JW would have been at 5,109, 33 and 19 and in the OPOY discussion and the Bucs would have likely been an 11 win team.     D1- Just from a volume standpoint, the more any QB throws the more chance of turnovers. When I look at Jameis games where he is above 35 attempts,our winning percentage is ~30-40%. Conversely, our winning percentage doubles when under that mark.
    I will freely admit that you may have better data to back up your point regarding attempt vs. turnover rate regarding Jameis. In which case the entire argument is moot. Because, if we can’t mitigate turnovers, by and large we will lose more games than we win.
    And the turnover “argument”, if you will, is grounded in statistical FACT. It is irrefutable. That’s for the “Flat Earth” folks who still don’t subscribe to turnovers being in direct correlation with losing!

    Improving on positives… That’s not his problem. Cutting back on negatives, turnovers is his issue, he actually seemed to do better with the fumbling this season, and now it’s INTs, and I also so a too many times where he had bad dropbacks, ie, he’s dropping too deep, and he is causing sacks not the o-line.
