Five More Years

January 5th, 2020

Predicting his future.

Right around Thanksgiving time, Joe asked stud outside linebacker Jason Pierre-Paul if the soon-to-be free agent wanted to return to the Bucs in 2020.

JPP said he did. And now it seems if there was a perfect world, JPP would play for the Bucs for another half-decade.

Grace Remington of WTSP-TV Channel 10 caught JPP after the loss to the Dixie Chicks. While speaking about the Bucs, JPP was asked what kind of shelf life does he see himself having in the NFL. JPP just turned 31 last week.

“Honest truth? I think I have five more left,” JPP said.

JPP also added he wanted to stick with Shaq Barrett, the Bucs’ franchise single-season sacks leader and reigning NFL 2019 sack leader.

“Defensive ends are hard to come by,” JPP laughed. “If you got them, you better keep them.”

We need him our whole defense improved as soon as he returned and he still looks like he can get to QB very well. Shaq and him have already said that they are a package deal so they are priority number one in free agency

  2. BigHog Says:

Players in this league know when it’s time to give back to the team to keep it competitive and now is that time, the BUCS can’t keep everybody, but we can keep all of those who truly want to be here!! KEEP GRINDING FAMOUS…draft well …hit on a couple of free agents and we playoff bound 2020!!

  3. Defense Rules Says:

@JPP … ““Defensive ends are hard to come by,” JPP laughed. “If you got them, you better keep them.”

JPP knows football. Bucs were blessed this year to have TWO DEs as well as TWO DTs who can kick arse AND a DC who know’s how to maximize their abilities. How long has it been since we could say that? Uhhh, a LOOONG TIME. THAT’S the engine that drives the train. It’s up to Bucs’ management to keep that group together as PRIORITY ONE.

  4. Defense Rules Says:

BigHog … Yes the Bucs can ‘keep everybody’ unless folks get greedy (and in that case I personally wouldn’t want them here). One of the things I love about JPP is that he’s a PROVEN PERFORMER. Everybody KNOWS what they’ll get when JPP hits the field: 100% effort all the time. He’s a fantastic ‘blend’ of superior TALENT and EFFORT and LEADERSHIP. How many players who’ve passed through these hallowed halls can we really say that about? Any player who blends ALL THREE is a definite keeper IMO.

It humors me that almost every JBF article seems to at some point come around to ‘What to do with Jameis’. I won’t debate that with you because I have no idea any longer if Jameis is the QB we NEED going forward. I defer to BA to figure out IF this TEAM can make it to the playoffs and WIN with Jameis at the helm. (BA has a LOT more at stake in that decision than I do).

That said however, I am a huge proponent for TEAM-BUILDING, and unfortunately MONEY is a huge consideration in the quality of the TEAM you can build. IF money were no object, I have no doubt that the Glazer Boyz would pony-up whatever it takes for us to have a strong defense & all the fixin’s to compete for the playoffs. But the salary Cap is real, and how you MANAGE IT largely determines the QUALITY of the talent our coaches have to work with IMO.

I’m unimpressed with the job that Bucs’ management has done with the salary Cap. We’ve overpaid for too many offensive players over these past several years … to the detriment of our defense and Special Teams. We maxed out the salary Cap last year and STILL had ‘holes’ to start the season … in the Secondary, Oline, RBs, and possibly most importantly … DEPTH. That’s NOT effective team-building. Fixing THOSE problems AND fixing the NEW problems that have arisen (like most of our DLine being Free Agents?) will be a true challenge for BA & JL. But it can be done IMO.

  5. Bucs Guy Says:

Keep JPP and Shaq. Suh is the unknown. If it comes down to $, he should be the one to go. He only has a little time until he retires anyway and his production is decreasing. Draft his replacement in the 1st rd regardless.

O-Line and RB after that. Someone to consider for depth – Chase Claypool from Notre Dame. Very good big receiver, blocker and great on punt coverage. Could go as high as rd 3, but most have him as a 4th or 5th rd pick.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We need to keep both DEs….for sure……and we need for our first two picks to be starters…..preferably to replace high salary older players like Dotson &, unfortunately Suh.
I’d like to keep Suh but he may be a luxury……now a RT & QB would certainly fit that mold…..that would save perhaps $25 million.
You have to hit with at least your first two picks in the draft……and we have missed on multiple 1sf & 2nd round picks….not playing.
ASJ, Spence, Aguayo, VH3, Mj Stewart & Evans (injury)……there are 6 lost starters right there.

  7. Defense Rules Says:

Hmmm, let’s see. Vea is returning, but Suh, Allen AND Nunez-Roches are ALL UFAs. Suh played over 77% of our defensive snaps during the season, so ya he’s the one who should go (Allen got 16% while Nacho got 26% so they’re obviously well-rested).

Yup, let’s get rid of the DT who was the 1st Round pick and who’s still playing like a beast. I’m in favor of letting Todd Bowles decide who’s worth keeping & who should go. Gt feel is that he considers Suh to be a necessity to allow our DEs/OLBs to feed.

  8. George Rauh Says:

Still mad at JL, there is no reason to restructure JPPs contract. he would still be property of the Bucs

  9. Stevebobucsfan Says:

I think the Bucs will resign JPP and Barrett I am thinking Gholson would be the one that’s out or maybe trade Gholson for a late round pick

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’d like to keep Suh……but I’m not convinced we can keep all of our D together…..if we have to sacrifice between Shaq, JPP & Suh….it’s Suh…..and the only way I’d dump him is if we spent a #1 to replace him.
Now, if he’ll come back for a small pay cut….then OK.

  11. SmittyToiletBowles Says:

5 more full seasons or these halfers he somehow gets himself into?? Cmon JPP grow up and show up. Be a great teammate and dont do anything stoooopid this offseason

  12. lowercaseg Says:

    Plz bring back jpp

  13. Old School Athlete Says:

Nobody ever had to say “Let’s bring in JPP for one more year to see what we have in him”. We know he can do the job. Yes, keep him around if at all possible.

  14. stpetebucsfan Says:

Are you guys old enough to remember the EF Hutton stockbrocker commercials?
When EF Hutton speaks….and they would cut to silent audio..everybody listens.

When JPP speaks…I listen!!! He was written off after he blew off half his hand. He proved everybody wrong. He was written off by all of us after the broken neck…again he has proven everybody wrong. If JPP says he has five years left I believe him.

And we all agree we need Shaq back. I believe in some old cliches….they are cliches for a reason. Things like if it ain’t broke don’t fix it…team chemistry is important…stop all this nonsense about paying the 30-30…28-42 guy 25 million and pay ALL of our D guys. And I mean ALL OF THEM…Gholston…Nassib..Minter…other talented depth players. They were clearly top ten at the end of the year.

Now imagine we implement LUV’s idea and sign JW and then ship him to Miami for a first rounder and second rounder. We could sign a retread QB and use one of our now many draft picks to select the future. Imagine what we could do to this defense with 3 top pics…or one…with one for RB..one for best OL…we could truly be scary next year.

    Use LUV’s plan

  15. Brandon Says:

I think JPP has about another three years as a top end pass rusher. Bucs should offer a three year deal.

  16. TOM Says:

Let.s make this simple. Let loser Winston walk. Sign mid level FA QB around 14 mil. Draft QB in 3rd or 4th RD. Let RG compete for starting QB next season. Money Saved can sign Shaq, JPP, Suh, Nassib & maybe Gholston. Trade Brate (save 7mil) Keep defense intact.

  17. Formerly Tampa 2 Says:

St. Pete has it right! re-sign all of our defense, trade Winston and sign a veteran to help either a draft pick this coming year, or next. Most of our 2020 draft should go to shore up our offense.

  18. DanBucsfan Says:

We have the ONLY offensive line in the Nfl with 3 players making north of 10 million yearly. And although I kind of like our guys, I think if I were gm and needed extra cash to do the clear and obvious thing by resigning the Dline players who where the force of our def, i would look to release or ( trade for draft pick ) one of the three. Cappa showed this year that a yound low salary lineman can make a positive impact. MAKE IT HAPPEN LICHT !! PLEASE KEEP THIS DEFENSE TOGETHER AND NEXT YEAR WE KICK A$$ AND TAKE NAMES

  19. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Franchise Winston for now. Then see if we can upgrade. You can drop the franchise tag before a certain date.

But I personally prefer to keep Winston another year, unless we can get a top QB.

Draft a potential heir and develop him just in case.

  20. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Bucs have $91 million to spend at present. That ain’t bad.

  21. BigHog Says:

Trading FAMOUS is a nonstarter. And a lanebrain …nonethinking mans outlook on FAMOUS!! KEEP GRINDING FAMOUS! And get MONEY!!!

  22. teacherman777 Says:

    Julius Peppers did it.

    So can JPP.

    Sign him!

    Fix our culture!

  23. MadMax Says:

Now we need him back for at least 2 to 3 of those five.

  24. Buczilla Says:

Crazy tough, hard worker, uber talented, productive, and makes players around him better. Perfect example of a player that you MUST re-sign.

  25. BigMacAttack Says:

I agree with JPP. We finally have 2 good DE’s and Licht needs to keep them both. Give them 5 year contracts and get a discount. Don’t go fishing other teams. Keep the good ones and focus on areas of need. QB is a strong need lol

  26. Buccaneerscotty Says:

    Agreed Tom!
