Will The Hall Of Fame Come Calling For Jameis Winston’s Jersey?

December 18th, 2019

Snubbed by Hall, for now.

Bucs fans know very well about how Ryan Fitzpatrick’s Buccaneers jersey is hanging in the Pro Football Hall of Fame for a unique accomplishment.

Last year, Fitzpatrick became the first player in NFL history to throw for 400 or more yards in three consecutive games, Weeks 1 through 3.

The honor generated a request from the Hall of Fame for Fitzpatrick’s jersey. The Hall even Tweeted a picture of it being displayed.

On Sunday, Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback, became the first in the history of the NFL to throw for 450 or more yards and four touchdowns in two consecutive games. To the best of Joe’s knowledge, the Hall of Fame hasn’t reached out to Jameis or the Bucs for his jersey.

One could say, well, it’s just a two-game record, but the Hall secured Patrick Mahomes’ jersey when he became the first player to throw for 10 touchdowns in his team’s first two games of a season. If that’s good enough, then Jameis’ record certainly should be, too.

Before Joe starts screaming bias, Joe’s going to consider this a temporary oversight by the Hall.

But c’mon, Team Glazer, Bucs media relations and marketing, and Jameis’ nasty and arrogant publicity person, get on it! It’s Wednesday already; Joe’s been waiting on this since early Tuesday morning.

Naw Joe. It dont work like that. JW could not be recognized in such a high regard

3 games left in the season and they gonna wait(pray) someone else breaks it

There has long been a hue and cry on this blog about the national disdain…prejudice?…lack of respect directed at JW throughout his career…particularly with the Bucs.

There is some truth in these lamentations from the poor persecuted JW supporters…some of it is simply that the Bucs lack respect and so JW is on his own…either he gains respect…bringing the Bucs along with him…or this treatment simply continues.

BTW…Some of this disdain for JW is the result of his off field activities

Here is an off field activity that could finally erase the previous record of misdeeds….JW simply signs a team cap friendly contract and pledges the reason he left $$$ on the table is because he’s already blessed and he now wants to focus on WINNING.

At the risk of being obsequious he could toss in a biscuit for the fans by saying he’s very pleased that the fans have stuck behind him throughout the tough times (many did not but they are now irrelevant if JW strikes while the iron is hot) and so he wants to be part of the TB turnaround for these fans.

Of course then comes all the yadda yadda bout playing for BA and BL and the great teammates.

Bottom line…signing a team friendly contract with no rancor or stupid negotiations in the media…QUICKLY…could give JW a truly fresh start with the fans finally on his side at the start of 2020.

  3. John Sinclear Says:

HOF doesn’t like the Bucs. How many past players are still waiting? I think one of them was a Barber, and another must be a cook, Rice, I think?

  4. Robert Says:

GTFO…. headline gave me a laugh though!!!

  5. LaMarcus Says:

Stpetebucs and every fan: enough with the “team friendly” crap. Team is not friendly when they blow a lead in the last 2 minutes or missed field goals. Sorry it doesnt work like that. The market is 30+ million and I hope that’s what he is asking for if not JW should bet on himself

  6. Bucsfanman Says:

stpetebucsfan- I enjoy your posts because you generally lay out some poignant thoughts.
Your idea of an appeal to the fans and signing a team-friendly contract would go a long way towards endearing himself to WE, the fans.

The “bias”? Well, become a winning football team and bias goes out the window. I think some of these “records” are frivolous anyway and do NOT belong in the HOF. That includes Fitzy’s. Just my opinion.

  7. Blogtalkfootball.com Says:

They are waiting for the 3rd in a row.

  8. MTM Says:

Click bait for sure. Jameis and HOF should not be in the same sentence at this time.

  9. thisisouryear!! Says:

I don’t see him being worth 30 million at this point in his career. Yes I’m excited to see him finally hit players in stride, but I he hasn’t won anything. I think the reason Jameis throws an INT to start the game every week is his huge anxiety. I need to see him play well when the games matter towards playoffs. Can he handle it? Maybe he’ll get 30 million on the market, but I don’t think I’d give it to him. He needs to prove himself still…

  10. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Lamarcus

OK enough…let him take a freaking hike if his demands soar over what a “franchise tag” would provide.

He has a six game resume out of a FIVE year career. You may wish to roll the dice I’m not so predisposed.

A one year deal will be fine thanks…if he works out there will always be time to pay him….the Bucs still CONTROL his contract.

HE DOES NOT NEED THE MONEY. Lamarcus twenty MILLION dollars is more than you or I can even imagine. That was just for this year…we’re talking about twice that for his first five years. It’s just BRAGGING rights.

He can boast a lot MORE if he turns around the Bucs and wins a SB!

I’m not suggesting the Glazers get to keep the loot they save…they must guarantee JW and his agent that they will spend the entire cap every year and not simply pocket the savings.

  11. neal Says:

They haven’t asked because the streak is still going. The hall didn’t ask for Fitzpatrick’s jersey until he after got benched in the Bears game on Sept 30th ( they put the jersey up on Oct 2nd). If JW throws another 450 Saturday they would look kinda dump asking for another jersey.

  12. BucAllNight Says:

    @STPete:

Where was this narrative when Big Ben had his off-field issues?(Rape)

Also same for Baker Mayfield who was ARRESTED? Still picked number 1 over all yet does not get ANY negative press like JW gets from ESPN and tons of other media outlets. In fact Browns had most primetime games this year and he and them are trash.

Now you want JW to take a ‘team friendly’ deal when hes EARNED the right to make more than Cousins or others.

You are a good poster man, but you have to also see whats going on here.

    Go Bucs!!

  14. Oneilbucs Says:

But when it was Fitzpatrick every body on this site and the national media was going crazy and happy for Fitzpatrick. It just goes to show every body that it is a false narrative about Jamies and that the national media hates this guy. That’s why I don’t understand why do some of the people in our fan base even believe what the national media say about Jamies. But they did their job. And that is to convince people to believe what they say about a quarterback or any other player in the NFL. But this fan base hate Jamies so much because of the national media we can’t even stick together with our team even when we win you guys try to find away to discredit the team only because of Jamies. If we would have had Andrew Luck and losing with him even if he would have had the same stats that Jamies have you guys would be ok with that especially if he has the same numbers as Payton Manning. And remember Payton had 121 turnovers that no one wants to talk about.

  15. Matthew Fifer Says:

    @LaMarcus

It seems as though you assume we are only winning games right now because Jameis. Nevermind the fact that we have won games against middle of the road/bad teams. It’s a team game and the other half of our team (the defense) has been playing much better the last several weeks.

If we sign Jameis to big money, we likely cannot keep the defense together. If we lose key players (which we would) and have to draft/sign new players that then have to learn the system, we risk the defense backsliding. If that happens, regardless of how Jameis plays, we will start losing again. He’d have to play perfect every week to give us a chance.

It’s more important to have a top 10-15 defense than it is to have a top 5 offense. Bottom line, the only way we retain Jameis and don’t hurt the team overall is if he accepts a “team friendly” deal.

If he really wants to win it all for Tampa, then he should accept what we can offer to make that possible. If you believe otherwise, I’d like to point out to you that Tom Brady has lost 3 Super Bowls, in all 3 of those, his teams defense was ranked in the bottom half of the league, in his 6 wins his defense has been ranked in the top 15 (a couple in the top 5) every time.

I’m not saying we can’t win with Winston, but I’m saying we can’t win with him and no defense, which will be the results of giving him huge money.

  16. Dewey Selmon Says:

Ever since he broke his thumb he is light out. Next preseason someone needs to chase him down and crack it again.

Not sure what I’m missing but if the implication is that racism has been a part of JW’s cross to bear I do not disagree. However I would emphasize only part and he is far from the only black player in the league.

After taking a HUGE gamble with the #1 draft pick some of us thought that JW “owed” the team something. After being moronic enough to be blackout drunk at 3AM with a charged…later convicted rapist…really bothered me…the Uber part was just a nasty result of what would have been stupid regardless.

JW is “entitled” to make all the money he can. I’m not talking about fair or right…I’m talking about SMART. JW is on the cusp of turning the corner with fans. Why not drive it home with a big announcement of JW’s commitment to the team and fans?

If JW utilized this moment properly…then backed it up next year with a playoff appearance…he would OWN Tampa Bay. The additional money on the table would dwarf whatever he turns down at the negotiating table. Just MO.

So you’re the arbiter of how much money one “needs”? Worry about your bank account and let the FREE market decide what JW3 will make. Maybe you “need” to shorten your posts on JBF? Even S. Reynolds thinks you’re a bit long winded at times…and that is saying something. Savvy?

  20. Craig Says:

The HOF likes to do those things at the beginning of a new season. Doing it now would be like stirring the ashes of a cold fire.

It is also a curse, like the one SI has, and Jameis is going to need all the help he can get for these last two games.

We also have to worry about how he will start next season. So far those haven’t been at all spectacular, more of a let down than the celebration of a new season everyone would like.

  21. Notabucsfan Says:

You bucs fans are hilarious. Team friendly deal with a loser organization and fans that hate him? Sure he will do that. I mean how many of you would play for the bucs for 15-mil when you could play for a real nfl team for 30? Being bucs fans half of you probably would. How many of you would accept half your salary because you like your job? You fans and the bucs deserve each other. Come on bucs. For the first time in your pathetic
history do the right thing. Cut him.

  22. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Jameis Winston “Gladiator” Rome’s QB…..should agree to that “team friendly” deal and claim he did it for the team and the fans…..he would endear himself greatly…..
Too bad he can’t make millions on endorsements like other QBs…..

  23. gilhealy Says:

In an hour long Monday recap of Sunday’s games on the NFL Network, there was no mention whatsoever of the Bucs, other than the promotional advertisement for Saturday’s lineup of games on their network. We consistently get home games in London, early bye weeks, detrimental scheduling, and bottom of the list listing in any league reports. We are the red headed stepchild of the NFL. The only way to change that is start kicking the crap out of some of the media darlings. They can’t ignore a winner.

  25. Bucsfanman Says:

Lamarcus- “Team-friendly” doesn’t necessarily mean cheap. We need to sign a BUNCH of players, thus, TEAM FRIENDLY!

WOW…his off field incident happened 3 years ago, the FSU so-called rape was BS . He has taken it in the shorts with endorsement contracts so he needs to make it with a decent contract. As nasty as this fanbase is towards him he owes nothing to this team. Quite frankly I hope he gets a better deal elsewhere. Getting a team friendly contract will not do a thing, he has way too many haters in this fanbase.

  27. Bucsfanman Says:

Ya’ll crack me up! Think Tom Brady, only without the rings and accolades.
“Team friendly”= Leaving the team the ability to continue to build a TEAM around said player.
Is it coincidence that the TEAM has been winning since the defense and special teams have improved? Take the Jameis goggles off for a moment.

He’s going to get paid whatever he’s going to get paid either here or elsewhere. And, there is nothing any of us can do or say about it. It would be nice to be able to pay other contributing players as well.

Good post on the media. And let that post reflect the main stream media for national news.

Same dog. Same spots. They tell people what to love, what to hate, who’s evil, who is righteous. It’s not just sports. There is psychology embedded in news reporting. Focus group studies. Two stories with different focus grouped phrasings will mean different things to the same person.

With sports it’s not that big of a deal. On a national and political level, the implications are much more dire. But the psychology of it has the same effect.

  33. Slugglife Says:

Haters can’t stop JW from succeeding or failing. If anything, the adoration from fans made him feel invincible, unaccountable for his off field actions. It dates back to jumping on the table with the FHRITP thing. Only cascades from there.

His career has surely humbled him. He can succeed and fail at the same time, which is actually a difficult feat to accomplish. If this is truly a business, then winning cures all ills. If this a just an emotional escapade where the actors get paid millions, then losing isn’t a big deal, personal triumphs and it’s rewards are all that matters.

For the fans it’s winning. For the players it’s the money. They laugh and dance when they lose, we get into fights and our family learns to hate Sunday buc football. Let me know where I’ve got this wrong.

What I would love to see, however, is no “franchise” or “transition” designations for Winston, Barrett or anyone else.

I would like to see JPP, Suh, Perriman and many other free agents on our team re-signed and brought back in 2020.  Let us see who really wants to continue the turnaround, who really wants to play under Arians for us the Tampa Bay Buccaneer fans.

    Oneil,

If you pay attention to the national media, there’s a change in the overall opinion of winston by the media. It’s changing from negative to positive right in front of you. The question is why?

Winston is still Winston. So why this sudden shift in the narrative? Since it cant be because of his recent play and history setting numbers, it should be fascinating to hear about the other reasons.

As for Fitz was treated differently than winston last year. No kidding!

It has to be signs of a multi media national anti winston conspiracy campaign.
I mean what other possibilities exist to explain the hate narrative of winston and love for fitz.

  42. July Joe Says:

Who is Jameis’ “nasty and arrogant publicity person”? That weird white lady who thinks she’s a movie star?

  43. July Joe Says:

    @ D1,

“It has to be signs of a multi media national anti winston conspiracy campaign. I mean what other possibilities exist to explain the hate narrative of winston and love for fitz.”

Man, have you read the book JAMEIS WINSTON DERANGEMENT SYNDROME? That book lays it all out and if you read it, you won’t wonder if and why and how the media hates Jameis, you’ll know.

As for why the narrative on Jameis is changing, that book could be a huge reason as the Manning comparison it makes was used by CBS news and Barstool Big Cat called it the best book ever written and since it came out a whole lot of media know they can’t just trick the fans into believing their BS because the truth has been written down in that book for all to read.

I also think the media knows the Bucs love Jameis and will resign him, so they don’t want to be caught hating on Jameis again and have to explain how they got it all wrong for the second year in a row. They may be nasty but they’re not stupid and they know they need their watchers and readers to trust them.
