Running Out Of WRs

December 17th, 2019

Bucs coach Bruce Arians.

The way things are going, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht is going to have to start raiding XFL teams for receivers.

With Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Scotty Miller all out with hamstring injuries, and who knows if they will take another snap of football this year, it left the Bucs in a pinch Sunday in Detroit.

Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians, in his weekly sitdown with Dan Lucas of WFLA-TV Channel 8, admitted wide receivers coach Kevin Garver and offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich were scrambling to fill holes with backups in Detroit.

“It was a little bit hectic on the sideline in the second half,” Arians said of Garver and Leftwich trying to put receivers in positions where they can make plays. Arians noted that Justin Watson played at three different receiver positions Sunday. “I really have to give credit to those guys and those coaches and to Jameis because he kept putting it on the money.”

Jameis hit 11 different targets on Sunday, in part because the Bucs went through so many receivers.

This week in preparing for Houston with kickoff Saturday at the Den of Depression at 1 p.m., Arians is taking a page from Bill Belicheat. “Don’t tell me what they can’t do, tell me what they can do.”

“They will know what they are doing,” Arians said about the backup receivers the Bucs will need contributions from if they hope to hang with the Texans. “We will have a gameplan put together with things that they can do. We will not be asking anyone to be like Mike [Evans] or asking anyone to be like Chris [Godwin]. Just be yourself.”

If Jameis can pull off a game this Saturday like he did last Sunday in spreading the ball all over the field, with mostly nobodies and dropping passes right in the bucket like he was doing at Ford Field, hell, Team Glazer might give Jameis a new contract as he walks through the tunnel to get to the Bucs’ locker room after the game.

Where is Freddy Martino when you need him?

  2. Easy Says:

I know a kid the next county over from me named Keyarris Garett that would love an opportunity to play again.

  3. NPRSageBoy Says:

When does the CFL season start?

  4. mark2001 Says:

For those of you that don’t view the Official team site as well, Schnell is back on the Practice Squad. Can’t keep those ISU boys down.

  5. J Says:

Dear Byron, I’d like to see what OJ Howard CAN do.

  6. H8JWLVEBUCS Says:

Hey Joe can I ask a question? What makes the Saints better then the Bucs? They have way less weapons then us but they are playing at a high level.

  7. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Raid the PS of other teams

  8. Brandon Says:

I wouldn’t be surprised to see the team put 3 TEs on the field with regularity and line OJ Howard and Brate all over the place. They HAVE to know the offense better than anyone but BP and Watson. I know Tanner Hudson played some WR a few weeks back. Howard would actually be a threat on the outside and in the slot.

  9. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

OJ dropped half of his targets on Sunday. NOT a great year for the TE who has so much “potential”

    H8

imo, its starts at the top with the GM…..

he knows how to build a team(draft trenches) and can identify talent….

sheldon rankings and marcus davenport are on IR again but their trenches are still stout….they still put pressure on the QB which makes life easy for the back end….rookies like chauncy garder johnson might replace vonn bell next year…..vonn was a 2nd round pick….CGJ was a 4th or 5th….

they’ve had olinemen missing this season and havent missed a beat….TB filled in for brees nicely…..

their GM drafts well and is prepared for injuries….

saints were 7-9 back to back seasons until the GM fixed the trenches….they’ve been a contender ever since…..

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  11. gilhealy Says:

I agree Brandon. If OJ runs full speed throughout his routes, he’ll be a handful. And, open quite a bit. I see a lot of screens and Perriman blazing past his guy. Let it fly.

  12. Coburn Says:

Yup with Branson said. No reason not to have Howard and brate om the field most of the game. Would be pure asinine to not use them ay this point.. Basically forced to

  13. Slugglife Says:

Bring back Kenny Bell! Dontae Dye! Horace Copeland!

  14. gilhealy Says:

Shnell will get open. I like that kid. Gamer.

  15. gilhealy Says:

Heck, as long as Winston gets time, he’ll be fine.

  16. View from 132 Says:

Jacquez Green still live in the area? He’s probably still faster than most NFL receivers. Dude played at the wrong time – he’d be all-world with today’s hands off corners.

  17. ou812 Says:

Glazer might give Jameis a new contract as he walks through the tunnel to get to the Bucs’ locker room after the game.

WAKE UP JOE !! WAKE UP JOE!! Your dreaming again !!!! He is not winning this week and he is not getting a new contract as he walks through the tunnel???

Gee what’s next you want have his baby’s? Your man crush is ridiculous!

  18. Slugglife Says:

Joe wants to have JW babies? Say it ain’t so Joe.

  19. View from 132 Says:

I agree with ou812… its a bit much that EVERY post is about JW now. How many receivers has Rodgers or Brady cycled through over the years? Why are we considering it high praise that our QB may complete a pass to some guys we’ve never heard of? I think its the opposite – if JW is maturing into a pro QB, he should be able to limit mistakes and make a few plays to Brate, OJ or other guys that have been here all year.

  20. ncbucsfan Says:

@ H8 and 813…..Its called chemistry and continuity! Sean Payton snd Brees have been together over a decade (2006)! Oh, and Brees is just the all-time passing leader in all 3 major statistics (%, yds, tds). I think that has a little bit to do with it!,

  21. ou812 Says:

Schnell > Captain Preseason liked his speed and his hands. Kind of small but we need someone to throw to!

  22. Noles Says:

    SLUGLIFE –

Come on man don’t disrespect HI C like that. He could actually play a little bit of WR unlike Dye & Kenny bell.. LOL…..

  23. Waterboy Says:

Antonio Brown said he’s available lol

  24. 813bucboi Says:

    NCBUCS

where was all that chemistry between 2012-2016?…7-9 4 of 5years….

i think the GM fixing the trenches and getting a run game had a lot to do with it….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  25. jjbucfan Says:

Ou812 and H8, if every post wasn’t on JW, what would you do? Even when there are articles on the defense or GM or WR’s you drag JW into the thread to tell us how much you despise him. He has won 4 in a row and 5 out of 6. This is a direct correlation with how the defense plays. He has thrown interceptions and we are still winning because the defense is actually making stops and getting TOs. Turn your attention towards the D, because JW3 isn’t going anywhere.

OU- I totally agree with Schnell- he is a good route runner and has above average hands. I still don’t understand Arians aversion to Watson, though. Last week he did great 5 for 50+ and a TD, this week, replaced by Miller on the Depth chart. It is very confusing. Bobo must have told Arians to F Off on his way out the door otherwise thought he would be brought back. He could be a serviceable slot guy and was a decent punt return guy until his career ending brain farts in New Orleans.

  26. TampaTown Says:

Bring back Freddie Martino! He’s in game shape making big plays in practice for the Vipers

  27. Slugglife Says:

Haha no disrespect intended. Went to high school with HiC, he was a hell of a basketball player too.
Dude flew on the ground and in the air.

  28. Slugglife Says:

JW has no business being around Antonio Bryant. For known reasons.

  29. unbelievable Says:

Houston has the best defense we’ve played in at least a month.

Also a good offense. This game was going to be tough even if we were completely healthy.

If anyone thinks / expects Jameis to put up another 4TD 450yard day, you are setting yourself up for extreme disappointment. We are missing 3 of our top 4 WRa and have no run game.

    Be realistic people.

  30. unbelievable Says:

Disagree about Bobo, he was trash who never showed a damn thing except that he was an idiot.

Waste of a roaster spot for too many years IMO

  31. David jones Says:

Maybe this new receiver Grayson Jr. With his speed can return punts and or kick offs. Do we ever need someone to take that that job and run with it.

  32. Buczilla Says:

The Texans are not puffballs like the Lions. If we beat that team and Jameis doesn’t act the fool, then It will go a long way towards restoring my faith in Jameis, the direction of the team, and god’s forbid, maybe even Licht.

  33. Howard Cosell Says:

Is Freddie Martino of the velvet-lined lounge fame available?

  34. DayOnePaul Says:

I’m with you, Brandon. We have OJ Howard, Cam Brate, and Tanner Hudson still healthy. Let’s put them in the slot or out wide. All of them can catch and run and they all know the system. None of them can block anyway.
