Bucs Lock Down No. 14 Overall Draft Pick

December 30th, 2019

Bucs GM Jason Licht

A middle-of-the-pack season has left our beloved Buccaneers with a middle-of-the-pack draft pick in April.

The NFL regular season is over and the Bucs now own the No. 14 overall pick.

Six teams finished tied at 7-9 (Picks No. 11 through 16) and the Bucs won a couple of tiebreakers to land at No. 14.

The Falcons (7-9) are at No. 16, and Carolina (5-11) will rebuild with a new head coach and the No. 7 overall pick. New Orleans is in the playoffs, so its pick has yet to be determined.

Draft needs? NFL.com shows quarterback, defensive line and offensive line. Reality says let’s see if Ndamukong Suh retires and what the Bucs do in free agency and with their franchise tags. Oh, and with their looming quarterback decision.

There’s no doubt in Joe’s mind the Bucs need to get younger on their defensive line and desperately need a running back to challenge Ronald Jones.

With the 14th pick, Jordan Love….been right the last 2 years, hopefully this time too.

  2. MadMax Says:

Then we need to move up a little for RT Jedrick Wills in the 2nd if still there.

Then Safety Kyler Dugger, RB Zakk Moss or Patrick Taylor, C Darryl Williams….dont know 6th or 7th yet.

  3. Barlow Says:

I like the direction we are going in but what the F is going to happen with our QB. Our no 1 Capt? Or is our defense the Capt? If so let’s stop giving opposing teams pat and also can we please not make FG’s an issue?

  4. MadMax Says:

6th round….6’6 WR TJ Vasher, Texas tech.

  5. Gator bait Says:

    Joe got his feelings hurt?

  6. ColBucFan Says:

Haven’t seen Love play, but don’t like this comment:

“Love’s tendency to throw interceptable balls because he won’t go past his first read is a major problem”

  7. Gator bait Says:

    A real QB please..

  8. BrianBucs Says:

When you are drafting that late, you really have to stick to your board.
Hopefully the Buc’s board is filled with QB’s

  9. Gator bait Says:

I will debate anywhere in a 35 mile radius but I want ira to motterate..

  10. Pelsbuc61 Says:

I’ll keep on saying it while incompetent Licht is GM and JW is QB, draft status will be irrelevant since no amount of talent can overcome those 2 idiots.

    Shots between rounds

    Buffalo wild wing?

  13. Gator bait Says:

Only 2 things stopping you, fear or good sense..

  14. Gator bait Says:

    5,000 yards and all😂

  15. MadMax Says:

@Colbucfan, yeah he needs work in some areas, but its that and a rookie pick on a rookie salary or 27 mill for same ole stuff…(big arm, can run, but stares down and throws INT’s)….and we NEED that 27 mill to re-sign a lot of our D and Perriman if we can afford to keep him. I’ll take my chances in saving the money for the sure things. Go watch some of his vid…2018 in particular. 2019 wasnt so good, new coach who has a bad record and playing with a lot of guys who didnt return from 2018.

  16. Jean Lafitte Says:

    RB
    OT

  17. Troy Says:

QB – trade up to get one

  18. Buczilla Says:

Pick 14 is a prime spot to pick whomever the front office thinks is the best running back ( I like D’Andre Smith or Jonathan Taylor). There should be some potentially solid offensive and defensive tackles available as well. Whether we keep Suh (I hope so) or not, Javon Kinlaw, DT from South Carolina would be a no-brainer for me. Too early for a QB here imho unless maybe Tua falls this far, but would we take a chance on someone that fragile? I sure as hell wouldn’t.

  19. Buc1987 Says:

    Licht might draft another kicker!

  20. GreatInBend Says:

Good hanging with y’all for another sad but silly season.

Thanks for your hard work, Joe.

I’ll be back when free agency kicks off.

  21. Buczilla Says:

Last 5 number 14 overall picks:

    2019- Chris Lindstrom Guard
    2018- Marcus Davenport Defensive End
    2017- Derek Barnett Defensive End
    2016- Karl Joseph Safety
    2015- DeVante Parker Wide Receiver

My draft nerd moment has ended, but I refuse to let Licht ruin the 2020 draft for me. Besides, some of his secondary picks are starting to blossom and if they continue to do so, I can forgive a lot of his blunders.

  22. LUVMYBUCS Says:

1st Order of Business Place a Non-Exclusive Franchise Tag on QB Jameis Winston.

A non-exclusive franchise player may negotiate with other NFL teams, but if the player signs an offer sheet from another team, the original team has a right to match the terms of that offer, or if it does not match the offer and thus loses the player, is entitled to receive two first-round draft picks as compensation.

  23. LUVMYBUCS Says:

We Have The Makings of A Potential Great Defensive Unit!

  24. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    ^^You don’t screw with that.

  25. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Potentially

  26. JameisAlmighty! Says:

The Almighty Famous Jameis Winston has an incredible season and fans want to punt him out of Tampa. Give The Almighty Famous Jameis whatever he wants, fix a bunch of hamstrings and Jameis get well soon! Oh yeah, and a kicker, OL, and some sandwiches for Byron Sandwich.

  27. Mr. Reality Says:

Thinking they bring in Rivers or Dalton as a bridge and player/mentor, and draft a QB in 2nd round to bring along. Gotta get an OT as first priority.

  28. Mr. Reality Says:

Almighty…lWinston’s season is a like a track and field novice. He won longest shot put distance but lost every other category event, helping his team lose.

1st Order of Business Place a Non-Exclusive Franchise Tag on QB Jameis Winston..

I thought a team was allowed only one franchise tag whether it was exclusive or non exclusive. If that is the case, then doing one on Jameis immediately hurts your negotiating power with Shaq Barrett.

  30. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Mt predeiction came true…Jameis would play just well enough to push the Bucs down in the draft just out of reach of his replacement

  31. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

So…if my math and NDog logic is correct…when Jameis passes for 10,000 yards in a season the Bucs will pick 28th….I get it now

  32. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’m OK with the non-exclusive franchise tag with Winston or getting a bridge vet like Dalton or Manning…..drafting a QB in round 2 or 3…..OT in round 1 with a RB in round 2 or 3.
Sign our entire Defense if we have the money…..sign Perriman….trade Brate or OJ.
And, pray for Justin Evans recovery.
    Matt Gay will be OK….

  33. Noles Says:

    – Mad max

Jordan love has INT issues look at his #’s NO THANKS….

Wills the Ala. R Tackle w pick 14 unless some unexpected players drop which usually happens. Then decide if someone better drops like Delpit S LSU… you can have wishful thinking… lol.. sure Delpit will be gone

  34. George Rauh Says:

No one is going to offer 2 round graft picks for Winston let alone 2 first. The best we can do is a 4rd comp pick

  35. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Geno – Potentially Picking Up A Couple Premium picks only help the BUCS .

  36. LUVMYBUCS Says:

George even if we pick up one 1st – we got something.

  37. LUVMYBUCS Says:

It’s Only Business – Aint Nothing Personal

  38. B.D Says:

Pay Shaq, place tag on Jameis, and hope someone makes an offer to him, then decline ,get 2 number 1 picks, then trade up and get whomever you want, (with 3 number 1 picks, you should be able to)also get a Rivers or Manning for a year or two to train rookie Q.B we also have trade bait,Howard,Evans?

  39. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    BD

    Boss

  40. B.D Says:

I think this team could be special with an average to good Q.B long as we keep upgrading Defence. and maybe get a running back or two we can depend on,
    oh yeah and a Kicker….

  41. Elita Vita Says:

Trade OJ Howard for a second round pick or as part of a move up to get a better round 1 pick.

  42. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Jameis in his team believe they can get a better deal out in the open market.

Sh!t – Let’em do all the heavy lifting!
All we gotta do is setback like a fat rat in a cheese factory.

  43. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    BD

    Vet QB

    J.K Dobbins
    Improved interior/exterior runblocking

    Resign Key Veterans DL Men
Add a couple prospects that can provide quality reps.

  44. Bucsfanman Says:

LUV- The 1st order of business has to be to lock up those defensive players.
Tag Jameis, like you say. Maybe you end up with a bargain. Either way, I’m hedging my bets and drafting a QB to groom.

  45. Stevebobucsfan Says:

Mad max. I was thinking about Jordan Love also in the second round but, reading his bio he had some off field problems. Not sure how bad. Also his bio said that he need to improve on looking off his receivers. Sounds like Jameis? Nonetheless, I would like to see him in a Bucs uniform too but, what was the off field issues, is he coachable

  46. Bucsfanman Says:

    ^^^Not in the 1st round.
    Trenches first!

  47. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Bucsfanman

    No worries bredren.
We can have Jameis tagged & shipped out well in advance.

  48. Bucsfanman Says:

LUV- Yeah, they’re going to need some $$$ for that d-line. I’ll be honest, losing Jameis wouldn’t hurt my feelings! And certainly not for the $$$ he’s rumored to be asking! No thank you!

  49. Jeagan1999 Says:

Sign Bridgewater to a 3 yr deal. (Let Jameis walk)
Draft Herbert or Eason in Round 1.
Draft JK Dobbins (RB) in Round 2.
Shore up OL/DL with remaining draft picks.
    Sign Barrett, Godwin to extensions.
Add a couple of good Free Agents.
We could be playoff-bound next season.

  50. Jeagan1999 Says:

    OR

See if Gruden is interested in trading Carr. Maybe for a 2nd rounder and a player….Brate or OJ.

  51. Stevebobucsfan Says:

My thoughts haven’t changed on the Bucs draft. As I have said many times. I think Arians will go OL or RB with the first pick depending on which one has the highest draft value and take a QB in the second to sit for 6 or 7 weeks to get acclimated to the pros. Then I think they draft to fill back up shots and so on

  52. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    ‘franchise tags’ – Joe

    We only get one, right?

  53. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Bucsfanman Says:
“I’ll be honest, losing Jameis wouldn’t hurt my feelings! And certainly not for the $$$ he’s rumored to be asking! No thank you!”

That story was fiction, as this week it was confirmed that the Bucs and Jameis have not even talked contract yet.

    Are you sure it’s two?

  55. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Bucs won’t draft a Running Back in the first round this year. Arians is a pass-first guy, as I pointed out last off season and no one believed me.

However, this past draft turned out well, along with free agency, so he’s earned my trust for now.

  56. Stevebobucsfan Says:

Good info Buccaneer Bonzi. My question for Joe and Bucs fans is, what should we do with Jameis not just Our personal wants but what do you think is logical. is the cup half full or half empty

  57. MTM Says:

Great franchises have a good GM, coach and QB. BA is good but Licht and Winston need to be jettisoned ASAP. Draft a great QB that’s a true leader not a fake rah, rah guy.

  58. Bucsfanman Says:

Bonzai – thanks! I wasn’t aware it had been debunked. Still will be costly, I’m sure.

  59. lowercaseg Says:

Whoever we pick, plz do what must be done and change these damn uniforms

  60. DalvinCookRules Says:

Drafting a “great” QB is easier said than done. Much easier.

Just one example out of hundreds: the vast majority of teams in 2015 had either Mariota and/or Winston ranked as not just a great but a cant-miss QB!

My personal feeling on the matter is that if you have a good enough team, then go out and grab a proven QB in free agency. You don’t need a “great” one… and sometimes those decent ones look great when surrounded by great talent (see R. Fitzpatrick 1st half of 2018)

  61. Bucsdelight Says:

Draft Oline. That’s what we mainly need. Defense is coming along as they are young. RJ looks like he is coming along as well.

Hopefully, get somebody other than Nike to do a traditional uniform. Nike is too much like Lichtweight, trying to impress and get fancy, when whateveryone wtis traditional thinking.

  63. Barack's Crack Pipe Says:

    *everyone wants is traditional*

  64. MadMax Says:

Two O linemen to watch right now in the miss st. vs louisville game.

Both #73, C Darryl Williams for Miss st.

#73 OT Mekhi Becton for Louisville

I’d like both but still want Wills for the run game.

  65. MadMax Says:

@Steve, he was caught in a room with others who were smoking weed, didnt say he was doing it…..also had a rough hand dealt to him at 14 when his Dad, who was a cop, committed suicide…had to be tough on him.

Again, he had some issues this year, new coaching and many players who werent there in his 2018 season…..go watch his 2018 vid. And hopefully he can be taught to look off people….he didnt have many options this year with the lack of talent around him.

  66. MadMax Says:

Well, Becton isnt playing i guess 🙁

  67. SOEbuc Says:

    A. Trade up for Herbert.
    B. S Grant Delpit (LSU)
    c. DT Javon Kinlaw (S. Carolina)

  68. Mike Johnson Says:

    Sign…Teddy (will be steady) Bridgewater

  69. Buchead407 Says:

    Tua?

  70. Cgmaster27 Says:

So funny how you all complain about interceptions and want eli or rivers as our bridge qb. Just stupidity. You know rivers had his 4th year with 20+ picks this year?

  71. CalBucsFan Says:

Draft QB Jake Fromm from Georgia. The guy has exceptional talent and knows how to throw passes that lead the receiver. He will have an NFL career as a starting QB, and they guys a winner.

  72. CalBucsFan Says:

    …the guy’s a winner!

  73. Isaac haggins Says:

    Fromms regressed terribly !!!

  74. Isaac haggins Says:

Would definitely contact the Raiders about their car you know Roofing is going to want to DAZN quarterback the guy is a head case and he has to have his own guy and pick the guy that’s a given !! someone will steal Carr at some point
