Bruce Arians Says He Had A Preseason Talk With Jameis About His Future, Lauds Jameis’ Work Ethic

December 5th, 2019

And now there’s a follow up to Bucco Bruce Arians punting the ultimate Jameis Winston question yesterday.

Wednesday afternoon, Arians told JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman he would “pass on that one” when asked whether he would endorse Jameis as the Bucs’ 2020 quarterback if called in to discuss the subject with Team Glazer.

On SiriusXM NFL Radio with Hall of Fame GM Bill Polian and Zig Fracassi, Arians was asked about his remarks and explained he told Jameis before the season that a decision would come after 16 games.

“He’s been playing really well for a while,” Arians said of Jameis. “The question, ‘did I make up my mind?’ I told [Jameis] in the beginning of the year. ‘We’ll wait til it’s over and we’ll make a decision.’ Right now, there’s a lot — a lot of good things on tape.”

Arians went on to say Jameis is doing everything asked of him — except protecting the football.

“He’s all-in,” Arians said. “I mean, Clyde [Christensen] and Byron [Leftwich] have done a great job. I have never seen anybody work any harder [than Jameis], put the hours in and the time in, on the field and in the classroom. So he’s all-in. Just continue to play and not turn that ball over and he’s fine.”

There’s that “T” word again. Turnovers. Jameis is really good at that. Thankfully, he’s really good at a lot of other things.

After these comments, Arians’ take yesterday makes a little more sense.

Many months ago, he told Jameis to grind out the best he’s got to offer and Arians will evaluate him after the season. So Arians is going to be accountable to his words.

Throw it 50 times a game and you going to throw picks man. Sign this 25 year old gun slinger. Fire the cannons!!!!

  2. Dapostman Says:

When you have a good defense and a run game you don’t have to take chances downfield. Like all QB’s Winston would benefit from these two identity’s. Let’s be real this organization has not made the playoffs since 2007. That’s a lot of bad running, bad kicking and bad defense. If you are bad in all aspects what are you supposed to do when you have the ball? Especially when your offense is all downfield passing.

  3. BucsBandit Says:

    TRANSLATION: JAMEIS IS LONG GONE.

If you read between the lines of Arians’ comments, it’s all there. It’s subtle, but it’s there.

We’re 12 GAMES into the season. There’s absolutely no reason for him to be making references to a PRE-SEASON conversation about “We’ll talk after the season.”

If Arians was SOLD on Jameis, he’d say so. He’d say the turnovers can be corrected. He’d say Jameis is clearly one of the top QBs in the NFL and we just need to do a little more work with him and he’ll continue to get better.

He’s not saying ANY of that. Not even close.

The comments about “Jameis’ work ethic” and how he works harder than anyone, is a great line to use when LETTING SOMEONE DOWN EASY.

“I can’t fault how hard you worked, you worked your tail off and were committed more than any player I’ve ever coached. BUT… ”

    BECAUSE THINK OF THIS…

He mentions the turnovers and says “continue to play and not turn that ball over…”

So you’re telling me he’s SOLD on Winston as his future QB *but* if Jameis turns the ball over some more in the final 4 games that he’s done with Jameis and moving on to someone else?

NO WAY. Arians has been in the NFL a very long time. I think he has already made up his mind and probably did a few games ago.

You don’t MOVE ON from a guy based on if he turns it over or not in the last 4 games of the season at this point. That’s just him emphasizing that the turnovers are the big problem with Jameis and that will be his #1 talking point when Jameis is let to go find another team.

YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST: JAMEIS IS LONG GONE.

  4. Pa bucs fan Says:

    Grt1 was dead on.

Sign the man who isnt even in his prime yet and who has another 10+ years left to ball out.

Jameis is the best the bucs ever had and would be a monumental dumb choice to let him walk.

  5. Pa bucs fan Says:

    Lol @ bandit

Yea cuz playing your hand before the end of the season, and saying were all in on resigning winston is the best way to get wrecked on the contract end.

BA made an offer to him via seeing hisbwhole season play out before they make a choice and that sounds reasonable.

Your bias and hater like notion of reading between the lines in commical.

  6. TexBuc Says:

Winston has the most TD passes and yards in Bucs history, but his Int. rate is not the highest. At 25 now he could be our QB for the next 15 years.

  7. Jimmy Says:

Bandit your bias. You’re telling us don’t listen to the words he actually said, but read between the line to infer what you want to be true.

  8. Cobraboy Says:

There is no “reading between the lines.”

For better or worse, Arians and Winston had a deal: play the whole season then talk seriously.

Makes sense, and I endorse it. Maybe Winston’s second half is far superior to his first.

But another 4+ turnover game would seal his fate.

  9. Cobraboy Says:

Winston will not “get let go.” He will be an unrestricted free agent. He can say “no” to anything but the franchise tag.

  10. JimmyJack Says:

I’m convinced more then ever that Winston will not only be a Buc in 2020 but that he will be a Buccaneer for a very very long time.

He will spend his entire career in a Buc uniform and will be our starter for the Long haul.

All’s you gotta do is watch the games and it’s plain to see. This defense has started to find their groove and Winston is seeing that he now has the team playing well around him. Winston now knows he don’t have to make all the plays and we can win.

Yes, sure their will be naysayers. To those I say only this to you…..Watch the game on Sunday. And pay attention. Winston will play as a franchise QB because the defense will again have his back. You watch it and watch it well. You watch the Bucs win a n Sunday and then maybe you will begin to understand!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!

  11. JimmyJack Says:

Bruce will practice what he preaches……Those three main words that he bases his philosophy around…….Trust…..Loyalty……& Whatever the third thing is.

Jameis has earned the TRUST of this staff……They will be LOYAL to their QB…..& Whatever the third thing was I bet they will do it to.

  12. Jmarkbuc Says:

Correct me if I’m wrong, but if we have the right to tag him, he’s not an unrestricted free agent, no?

  13. JimmyJack Says:

Jmark…..Don’t know the rules so great but I believe Winston will be an unresriced free agent by a specific date. Before that date arises we have exclusive rights to sign him to a long-term deal. If we don’t seem gn him we may also slab the tag on him.

If we do neither before the free agency dinner bell rings he is UFA. I think that’s how its works

  14. cmurda Says:

That is fair to say Jimmy Jack. The most obvious game to notice Winston’s newly found trust in his defense was this last one. I can’t remember a whole lot of games that Winston has had the luxury of a trustworthy defense. The defense started to show that it has upped its game against the Falcons but it really showed against the Jags. I want to pull for Winston. I have for so long now and it would be a whole heck of a lot better for all of us if Winston ends up being the franchise guy after all rather than having to move on. With that said, it’s easy to go soft on Jameis right now, but the turnovers are inexcusable. That’s a tremendous amount of INT’s and even when it felt like a mistake free game by Jameis, it wasn’t. He still fumbled and there was enough time for him to secure the football. At the end of the day, it’s hard to imagine Bruce starting over with a rookie at QB and who would be available that is better than Jameis? Like I said, it’s best for Jameis to be the guy. I’m pulling for it.

  15. westernbuc Says:

Honestly, if Jameis didn’t have the off-field thing I’d be perfectly fine giving him an extension. Turnovers suck, but unless we got the next Mahomes coming down the pipe, we could do a lot worse.

  16. Kobe Faker Says:

    “Lol

Dak should have signed for 5 year 32mill per but wanted 40

    Greedy biatch

60 yards 1st half. Watch him get junk yards in the 2nd half

How dare he try to gain more yards then our Americas QB”

    Kobe Faker

  17. JimmyJack Says:

cmurda…..Yes it is hard to imagine Bruce starting over with a rookie. In fact, I’ll go out on a limb and guarantee that he will not.

Arians came out of retirement to accomplish one thing. To win a title. No way, no how, does a rookie QB get him closer to that goal. Actually the opposite.

We gonna have a QB on this roster next year that Bruce believes can get us over the hump……..It’ll either be Winston or a pro experienced QB. That’s just the way it’s gonna be.

Bruce ain’t here to groom a QB for 2-3 years then try to make a run.

  18. TexBuc Says:

    Jimmy

At BA’s age I really do not believe he will coaching but maybe 2 more seasons.

  19. Tnew Says:

I can’t imagine the open thread if Winston was playing like Dak. Frankly, cowboys look like they are ready for a coaching change. Lincoln Riley…. my guess.

  20. snookman Says:

I just want the team to be better. Jameis is good enough for us to win. If the team is good around him than im fine with Jameis. If Jameis has to be superman to overcome a bad team…………………………….INT Central

  21. JimmyJack Says:

Tex Buc I think it’s really hard to put a fine line on that.

Yeah your probably right if we win 8 games next year and 7 the year after……… But what if the ending of those 2 seasons you’re talking about is the Bucs taking a bitter loss in an NFC Championship Game? What then? I’ll put my money on Bruce coming back and try and get that title.

But I’m not trying to look 2 years into the future. Just gonna enjoy the ride.

  22. JimmyJack Says:

But one part I do like about our franchise right now is the extra large coaching staff we got.
When Bruce does decide to hang up his clipboard and put his golf cart in the garage it feels like our next coach is already on staff.

Which also means we will retain all of our assistant coaches and coordinators. The messages will stay the same. Scheme will stay the same. Preperation will stay the same. We won’t have to turnover the roster to match new coaching regimes……We can transition without missing a beat.

For the first time in a long time it feels like the organization has a actual plan.

  23. Adrnagy Says:

2 game winning streak has you talking all good. Let the season play out. But I understand why your happy.

  24. BrianBucs Says:

As I said before this is all just theater.
I think the decision to keep Winston has already been made. Letting him walk would show that Licht made a mistake drafting him and he just will not do that.
I predict that the Bucs sign Winston to a multiyear deal with very little, if any, guaranteed money after the 2020 season. Thay way Winston gets one more year with Arians. Then if he doesnt get any better they can cut him without being on the hook for much.

  25. View from 132 Says:

I don’t agree Bandit. Why the hell would Arians throw his support publicly and GIVE HIS AGENT LEVERAGE. The minute the Bucs say yes at all, the minute his agent is trying to find another team to cause a bidding war. Even if the Bucs were totally sold on Jameis it would stupid to say so.

  26. BucsBandit Says:

@JimmyJack – “Bad Jameis” is due to make an appearance very soon. You just got fooled into thinking his recent wins against 3-win and 4-win loser teams proves he’s great. Spoiler Alert: He’s not. “Bad Jameis” will prove that to you very soon. He’s coming. We all know it.

@View from 132 – nah, the ‘opposite’ is true as well… if they were that worried about Arians’ comments affecting negotiation leverage, they’d have Arians strategically saying more negative stuff publicly than positive stuff. It goes both ways.

    JAMEIS IS LONG GONE.

  27. Not a blind bucs fan Says:

Winston is only 100 yards behind Dak for leading the league in passing yards. If it was one of the guys the NFL was propping up you’d know it in the intro to every stat conversation.

  28. TexBuc Says:

Just 4 games left and soon we will find out Winston’s future.

  29. JimmyJack Says:

Bandit…..In all of Winston’s years here he has never had a defense to support his unit…….That is until right now.

This will make a very real and noticable difference. In fact in has in the last few games. You may see for yourself firsthand this Sunday at 1:00. Watch and enjoy.

    GO BUCS!!!

  30. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

I wonder how many minutes (hours?) Bandit is going to waste on typing up his useless fantasy novels about Jameis being gone.

Baring a meltdown game ala Carolina or Cincinnati last year, I think Jameis is here next year.

  31. DooshLaRue Says:

    Dak!
Hey, he looks bad but hey…… he’s thrown for the most yards this year….

    AND
    THAT’S
    ALL
    THAT
    MATTERS

    Right Nuthuggers?

  32. DooshLaRue Says:

How do you bar a JayMiss meltdown game BTW?

    It just happens…… it’s organic!

  33. Jean Lafitte Says:

I’m convinced he will remain a Buc next season, I’m just not convinced he will be any better. He’s had five seasons and his game management remains the same, plus he doesn’t show the ability to rise to the occasion and carry his team like many of the franchise QB’s do during crucial moments. Jameis is an athlete that plays QB. When his plays are sc ri pt ed and he plays the predetermined and practiced plays he shines well. But, when the choreography ends and he starts playing school yard scramble ball is where Jameis gets in trouble and he presses and makes mental errors. Personally, I believe he struggles reading defenses.

  34. Ozzie the Sports Junkie Says:

You notice Bucco Bruce’s publicity shot is at a poker table….with a big stack of chips…the chips are his future coaching legacy and status..Being a gambler doesnt mean hes going ALL IN on a decent coaching career based on a 2 week run of a QB with more INTs than chips in his stack…Im not buying it.Not throwing 1 -1/2 ints a game is not reason to proclaim the messiah has arrived..Like it or not there WILL be a vet starter brought in AND a draft pick for 2020…generally New coach = his own qb …Arrians is waiting on the river card and we’ll see his “dedication” to a house card he was dealt….i remember well the team saying “hes our guy” about Vinny ..”we haven’t made a decision” on Dilfer ..why did Freeman get ZERO slack?? 26td 10 int 10wins?? yes that did happen.. ..what would #3 command off that ?? 40-50Mil year?? ..the axe falls unceremoniously..theres a line in Goodfellas “Ya never see it coming”…..

  35. adam from ny Says:

if andrew luck is available, jameis is gone…

but if luck wont return for BA, then jameis stays…

    #BruceLooksBetterInPewterThanRed

  36. 1sparkybuc Says:

Every pass Jameis throws is a new franchise record. The only offenses ranked in the top ten in the league in points or yardage, have had Jameis at QB, and that has been behind some of the worst OLs in the league. He’s had one year with a decent ground attack. For those who insist on attacking his character, he’s had one single incident nearly four years ago where he was accused. No police report. No arrest. No trial. No conviction. No proof. Not so much as a single witness, yet some “fans” swear it was rape. That wasn’t even the accusation. Jameis has been a model citizen and took his suspension like a man. He is not now, nor has he ever been, a threat to society. He is however, our best option to compete and win in the playoffs. BA knows this.

  37. I Bleed Pewter Says:

    Jean nailed it again

  38. Welby Says:

How many coaching staffs has he had since being drafted?
How many coaching staffs has Brady had since being drafted by the Pats?
    My point exactly…

  39. Dan Says:

How many quarterbacks get a contract the same year they throw the most interceptions in the league and possibly league history.

  40. Bobby M Says:

Folks…..Winston throws it so much because he starts slow and turns it over early in games. We trail by 14 in the late 1st/early 2nd qtrs too often. You cant win with turnovers at the rate he produces them.

Fans like to reference Brett Favre….Peyton Mannning. You know who else falls on that list of yards and turnovers? Blake Bortles….Josh Freeman. Statistically Brett Favre and Peyton Manning would be considered outliers while the overwhelming majority of other QBs that turned it over at those rates lost….consistently. Winston isn’t the outlier to the outlier…..He’s not the 1 in the history of the game that just needed this, that, the other and suddenly went on to multiple playoff births and Super Bowls. That’s the reality Arians knows…..He knows the plays being called, he knows where Winston should have been picked but got away with it. He knows when Winston should have dumped it but launched it into double coverage and Evans made a miracle catch. Arians knows what’s real and whats bad luck……100 turnovers isn’t bad luck, its careless play in year 5 where you should understand how to dump the ball off or throw it away.

  41. Jim Says:

Well, the “Mr. Entertainment” tag fits pretty well. I know I’ve been entertained, but what about Bruce? Has he found Jameis entertaining?

  42. Hodad Says:

Licht, and the Glazers think success is signing Licht’s draft picks to second contracts, rather then results on the field. D. Smith deserve to be paid? Marpet? Neither one a pro bowler, but getting paid like they are. Licht will resign Jameis, for more then’s he’s worth, you can count on it. There will be no excuses next year, and if we don’t win, expect BA to retire.

  43. #1bucfan Says:

Glad to read some good an educated comments on here instead of people bashing Winston like it’s his fault the run game is invisible an the defense has bin complete trash most of the season. Yes we all know his turnovers are a problem. A lot of that is him trying to be Superman an win the game by himself. Our defense has stepped up the last couple games an look what has happened. We have won. Put a team around him like his first couple years at FSU an he can lead us to the playoffs but he needs a defense run game an special teams. It’s a team sport

  44. MTM Says:

Bobby M you are spot on. The comparison of Manning and Favre are not the norm. Winston’s 1st half antics put him in a position to chuck the ball down field in the 2nd to score points. The QB position is one that has to be mistake free for most of the game for team to win consistently. This idea that the defense has to constantly bail out Winstons mistake is a joke.
Winston has to have the highest 1st down inception rate of any QB ever. Move on Glazers.

  45. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Things to consider:
    • First year in this offense
    • First year in a completely different defense
    • First year kicker
    • First and Second year secondary
    • Arians offense is pass heavy, even when ahead
    • I liked Dirk, but the more I see of this coaching staff, the more convinced I am that this is the first year any of these players have actually been coached. By that, I mean development. Previous coaches told players what they needed to do and expected them to find a way to get it done. But this staff educates, works with them. I think that has to pay off in the long run.
    • It’s easy to look at these young QBs setting the league on fire this year and assume we can draft one to do the same…but the simple truth is that kind of play usually is not sustainable. Think about it. Who were the top young QBs the last couple years? Are they still at the top? What sort of team was built around them?
    • Every year, there is always an element of commenters here who say “blow up the whole thing and start over!”

They even create false support for themselves by using multiple usernames.

But it’s a false narrative created by trolling fans of division rivals, doing their best to sew seeds of descent among the 12th Man of the Bucs.

    • There will be no Andrew Luck. That’s a pipe dream, and not even a goid one

    On Jameis
    • At 25 currently, Jameis is finally at the age when maturity starts setting in. We are seeing it this year. He’s not fully mature as a player yet, but he is improving in some areas. That will continue.
    • Those off-field issues? People seem to forget that the last on was 4 years ago…almost half a decade. The suspension came years after the supposed event happened. In that time, Jameis has kept clean. Nearly half a decade.
    • Jameis is on pace for a 5,000 yard season. Think about that. It means Arians has him passing more, not less.
    • The Bucs offensive line is on pace to allow a record number of sacks and QB hits. Look back at Jamies’ career. As sacks increased, so did his picks. Think about that. Over the years, how many NFL QBs have been ruined by bad offensive lines? Example: David Carr.
    • Jameis has the occasional horrible game, but in those same games, he experiences higher sacks than normal, and the defense played horrible

  46. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

At this point, I prefer to re-sign Jameis. I’m not saying that because of the last two games. I’m saying it because I believe it is the smart move.

We need the franchise tag for another player. Because of his high picks and the team record, we’re almost certain to get a team friendly deal, possible as low as $25m per year.

Compare that to recent QB contracts.

I suspect an element of fans want him gone for salary cap reasons. But teams deal with QB salaries every year, plus there is a chance teams will get to exempt one player from the cap.

JPP will not be back. Suh probably will not be back. Dotson won’t be back. That’s $27 million cleared right there.

Lavante David can rework his deal. Mike Evans can convert some to bonus. Godwin can wait another year. There is about 14 million rolling over from this year. The cap will increase again.

Fans need to stop fretting over the cap and let the team worry over it.

    * JPP wants to move on…which is why he got the Bucs to release him from his final year. Nassib can get the job done…cheaply.

** Suh is great leadership, but he is mainly a run stopper. We can find that in someone else.

  47. BucsBandit Says:

    BONZAI,

You lose all credibility claiming the Bucs O-Line is about to “set records” for sacks and QB hits. That’s a 100% LIE.

There are 6 teams worse than the Bucs O-Line for sacks allowed this season.

And also when you are at the top of the league in PASSES ATTEMPTED you will also skew towards more sacks because you are dropping back more. Not hard to figure that out.

  48. Jaywill Says:

Bucs bandit he is talking team record. Also only Murray has been sack more and Winston leads in being hit the most. I dont know where you are getting your info but its wrong.

  49. #1bucfan Says:

Bonzai. So right about the younger QBs that got paid an then went nowhere. Look at Goff an wentz for example dat prob would have gotten a contract if he wasn’t being greedy think I read dak wants 40 mill a year but after last night there’s no way. Then there’s Mahomes I personally don’t think he’ll ever slow down but he’s deff not in that category but I don’t think the same about Lamar he’s also killing it he’s a little better version of mick Vick I don’t think Lamar can sustain the success he’s having now tho. Back in the day the Bucs figures out how to slow down Vick an there will be a team to do the same vs Lamar

  50. Stanglassman Says:

Putting in more time than anyone really means something coming from BA considering Payton’s we’ll documented work ethic.

  51. July Joe Says:

What a shock, the AUTHOR of the BOOK on Jameis was right again and the media was wrong.

    JAMEIS WILL GET PAID $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Good job running this article Joes as a whole lot of other outlets are ignoring the second Arians interview so they can bash Jameis based on the first.

  52. TampaBayBucs55 Says:

I think I’ve discovered the true identity of BucsBandit:

Ryan Griffin. Guy must be desperate for a chance after all these years…

  53. Oneilbucs Says:

Ain’t no rookie quarterback is going to come in and ball out with this offense. We are talking about a offense with no running game or a decent blocking offensive line. It’s amazing to me that with no running game we are still ranked number 3 in offensive scoring and total offense and this trash fan base is blaming Jamies for the team’s losses. Lol lol lol lol of course you are going to turn the ball over when you can’t run the ball and you throw 50 times a game. I remember when we played the Rams they said Goff played well because he threw the ball 60 times with 3 turnovers but for Jamies that’s a bad game. You stupid fantasy football people have bought into the narrative of the national media. Yall love to use the word nuthuggers but that’s what yall do for the national media. Yall hug there nuts all the time because yall believe everything that they say about our team and Jamies.
