About Shutting Down Jameis For 2019

December 11th, 2019

America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, has some form of a broken bone in his throwing thumb.

One might think the logical thing to do would be to end his 2019 season — for all parties involved.

Imagine being Jameis’ agent and knowing your client just came off an eye-opening victory that emphasized his incredible talent and drive.

That’s a high note entering free agency.

If you’re leading Team Jameis the business entity, do you really want Jameis on the field throwing with a bad thumb in a meaningless game in Detroit? Minus Mike Evans and plus a banged up left tackle and a broken thumb, is that a formula for success for your client?

(Yes, the interceptions are there; Joe’s not ignoring the fact Jameis has thrown 18 in the past 8 games. Eight!)

And what about the Buccaneers’ side of things? Bucco Bruce Arians wants to win so his team keeps learning how to do it. But he also will want the best he can find the 2020 NFL Draft, and he certainly doesn’t want to take a bite out of Jameis’ confidence and lose behind a QB trying to do to much with a busted digit.

Arians has won plenty of games in his career with backup quarterbacks. It certainly wouldn’t kill anyone to see if Ryan Griffin is a backup worth having — as in the kind of backup that’s won games in New Orleans, Tennessee, Carolina and Jacksonville this season.

Joe’s not rooting for any specific outcome here. But Joe does hope there are serious, intelligent conversations happening at One Buc Palace.

Today, Jameis emphasized that he’s just taking one day at a time with the injury.

    Unleash RG4!!!!

  2. whats the bucs plan 2020 Says:

develope and evaluate talent, so we can prepare for the draft ….keep the most talented and manage salary cap….. JW isnt worth 30 million

  3. Dewey Selmon Says:

Remember Matt Flynn? Had 1 good mop up game with Green Bay and turned it into fat contract with Seattle. I would like to see RG4 get a chance and maybe an opportunity somewhere else.

  4. DBS Says:

They know what he can do against a garbage team. He has shown what he has . The only other team to evaluate him against would be the Texans. No need to get him hurt if they are serious about keeping him.

  5. bogiedr Says:

    Agree!!

  6. DooshLaRue Says:

There’s just NO way that RG4 can possibly win a game is there?
Only the Soiled Messiah can do that because he IS the offense…..

    ……for both teams!!!

  7. Tye Says:

I’m sure the fear on all parties is if Ryan or whoever starts comes out and throws for 300+ yards, 3 TD and most importantly no ints showing its more the receivers than the qb and JW proven obsolete!

  8. 813bucboi Says:

    rojo struggles in pass pro….
    oline shaky….
no run game to lean on….
    ME13 out….
    JW is injured…..

    yeah….we should get the W….lol…

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  9. BigHog Says:

FAMOUS is gonna take a page from the great Cassius Clay …I’m gonna shock the world….come hell or high water FAMOUS will play!!

  10. Robert Says:

Public Enemy #1 shut em down!!!

  11. Robert Says:

RG IN THE HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we have a chance….FINALLY!

  12. Robert Says:

Can’t Truss It……………….start RG and let the culture gel. the ME/JW hail mary’s are the reason the rest of the offense sucks!

This is a very interesting question indeed. For those out there saying that he should play if he can, well, remember what happened to Grant Hill? He tried playing through an ankle injury for the Pistons in a series that had very little shot of winning. That decision ended up seriously derailing his career.

  14. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Juicy convo for the off season either way but if RG4 can play like a solid backup or even do things consistently Jameis has yet to prove it’ll really really git this joint popping….and NO ! illiterates I did not say or imply RG4 replacing Jamyth …I have resigned myself that #3 will be back with another prove it kind of contract

  15. BigHog Says:

Tye: Fear ….Fearless is the FAMOUS ONE…Ryan, 300 yards, even you don’t believe that and you wrote it. Do you not see what it takes to accomplish that feat! And at this point of the season (RG4) would be a bench warmer.

  16. LaMarcus Says:

Please no RG4. He is not good at all. And boring….. but he knew a ball to the dirt is his highlight

  17. Bucsalltheway Says:

The worst part about reading comments people have no clue what they are talking about let alone know what they see. Coaches know thier players if ryan griffen was a percentage of a good player he would have been inserted in the line up during 3/4 int outings…think people!!!

  18. tmaxcon Says:

of course the blind haters want jameis shutdown with each win he proves that their ridiculously hatred is laughable. jameis purity of heart is killing the haters with wins and compassion. all hail jameis the true savior of the bay

  19. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

This is stupid to be even discussing

  20. DooshLaRue Says:

If the coaches know their players so we’ll, then why was VH3 starting all year?

  21. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Bunch of negatives of playing RG4; if he does real well the final few games what does that say about jameis and that roller coaster and then also about licht. He will not be throwing jump balls to ME and then the bucs have some legit mirror looking questions coming up

  22. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

    Doosh 100%

  23. pick6 Says:

finding quality in the draft is not just about being lousy and picking high. bucs fans should know that by now. it’s about coaches who know what they want talking to scouts who know what they are looking at, and all of them sticking around long enough for it to come to pass. this team will be fine picking outside the top 10 in the first round, as long as the coaches who want them don’t get run out of town for….not winning enough

by definition, every player outside the first round is\was available to any team regardless of how their season went – do we really want to put slightly more options in the mid-first round above proving that the players and coaches we already have are capable of winning?

  24. runnerdoc Says:

Jameis doesn’t have a broken bone. He has, at most, a small (“hairline”) crack. Anything more, he wouldn’ have been cleared by a hand specialist.

  25. Buc1987 Says:

Robert …statistically the offense doesn’t suck.

Maybe in your demented little brain it sucks.

    Then again you suck …sooooo…

  26. tmaxcon Says:

    bucs are unwatchable without jameis.

  27. tmaxcon Says:

    Buc1987

it’s the holiday season man you should show Robert some compassion

  28. Buczilla Says:

Let em play. How bad can it be if he was slinging it all around last Sunday? I would rather see us keep up this good vibe and momentum going into next year than worry about draft picks (Licht will screw it up most likely anyway). There is a reason that Griffin is on the bench and as much as I want him gone, Jameis gives us the best chance to win. Please sign AND draft some competition at qb next year Bucs.

  29. Couch Fan Says:

To me its a simple decision. You had all off season, training camp and most of the season to figure out what you have in Jameis. You arent going to learn anything new in these final 3 games against bad teams. Sit him and Evans. Let Griff get some reps then come up with an overall plan for your QB room. Start preparing for the future whatever that may be.

  30. Wesley Says:

Will be interesting if Griffin lights it up in the final 3 games.

  31. Craig Says:

If Arians was a real coach and trying to protect an injured player, he would tell Jameis to take a seat. One smack to the top of a helmet and that little crack in the bone will not be little any longer.

I, personally, have faith in Ryan Griffin, he is a start in preseason, so why not now? His deep ball is a much prettier thing than the ducks Jameis chucks and he is an athletic guy. Give him the reps and let him go, he isn’t going to spoil our playoff hopes for this year, Jameis already trashed those.

  32. Defense Rules Says:

I still don’t see the issue. Bucs have 3 more games to play. If Jameis gives us the best chance of winning AND is cleared by the medical staff to play, HE PLAYS. It’s a no-brainer IMO. Bucs’ goal has to be … ALWAYS … to put the best players on the field who give us the best chance to win. Anything else is rubbish.

  33. TheDood Says:

That Mike Glennon draft pick really worked out!

Thank goodness we didn’t pick up that lousy Russel Wilson guy that went a few picks later….garbage.

Our big, tall STORK-MAN (Chris Simms 2.0 w/out the dolphin tattoo on his ankle) will get ‘er done!

To the PE fans, I met Chuck D outside of Jannus Landing about a decade ago or so. Shook his hand, super nice guy. They even played ‘Free Bird’ that night, excellent version. They said: “Hey, next time Lyn

  34. TheDood Says:

Lynyrd Skynyrd comes to town….ask them to play “fight the power” and see what happens!” 🙂

  35. TheDood Says:

He is a start in the preseason so why not now? LOL…..that’s funny man!

  36. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Imagine being Jameis’ agent and knowing your client just came off an eye-opening victory that emphasized his incredible talent and drive.”

Eye-opening victory? We won by THREE points & might have even lost it if the Bucs’ defense hadn’t held the Colts to 7 points in the 2nd half, including holding them on downs with 2 minutes left in the game. And I presume that you’re aware that you’re aware that Jameis threw THREE INTs, and that one of them was run back for 7 points. Maybe you’re even aware that Colts were gifted 10 points in the first 5 minutes of the game thanks to TWO giveaways by our offense.

Yes Jameis kept leading the offense back, but quite frankly it was from deficits that the Bucs’ offense created for themselves because of FOUR giveaways in the game. THAT’S not eye-opening; THAT’S happening in way too many games. And IF it continues unabated, say bye-bye to any hopes for a playoff berth next year.

our medical staff cant be trusted…..they’ve had several misdiagnoses…..beckwith…winston etc….

do you want long term success or 3game success?….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  39. doctor_berto Says:

People actually thinking Griffin is going to light it up the last three games? lol have you seen the dudes arm strength? He is a third stringer at best.

  40. Rob F Says:

Play Jameis, try to win out. Enough cheering for losing to get better draft position. We draft Mark Barron at with Luke Kuechly on the board anyway. Might as well stamp losing out of this franchise right now. 9-7 or 8-8 would be amazing after a 2-6 start and should be the only goal right now.

  41. Hamsadwitchtime Says:

RG4 we loose last three. Play Winston if you can. Sick of this loosing mentality!!! Let’s win last 3

  42. Defense Rules Says:

813bucboi … “our medical staff cant be trusted”. Aw come on bucboi, that’s ridiculous. Bucs have had fewer injuries to starters & key rotational players this year than in any year I can remember. THAT’S not by accident.

If Jameis’ thumb is dinged up & he can’t grip the ball properly, it’ll be immediately obvious BEFORE the game. But if he can play, he should play. If he can’t, then OK sit him down. Just remember though that the Bucs are down to Ryan Griffin. Gabbert’s on IR & if Jameis sits, we’d have to bring up Chad Kanoff from the Practice Squad. And since Kanoff graduated from mighty Princeton, we’d have to clear him tossing the rock with Harvard’s Cam Brate. Those Ivy League schools do have a pecking order you know.

  43. pryda...sec 147 Says:

Jaboo has to play no question about it. And he is t going anywhere he absolutely will be here in Tampa next season

  44. Stanglassman Says:

I want Jameis to strongly consider my Fantasy FB semifinal prospects. I’ve been loyally starting JW3 all year. Don’t make me have to start Jerod Goff.

But seriously Jameis is a leader, too competitive and wants to win too much to keep him from playing if physically possible.

  45. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

Griffin would go 0-3 as mentioned above. He has pre-season arm strength…nothing more. I’m very impressed he has collected an NFL pay check for as long as he has…first official passes last week of his career! Jamies at minimum will be franchised and perhaps more likely given a multi-year deal. Tied to Licht at this juncture. Barrett franchised if Winston re-signs with Bucs is my guess.

  46. Rod Munch Says:

So long as Winston can grip the ball, you know he’s going to play.

  47. Stanglassman Says:

I thought Chris Sims has Clyde Christensen’s name on his ankle. I never heard it was a dolphins logo.

  48. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

yOU’VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME.

  49. July Joe Says:

If the Bucs had any desire to start anyone other than Jameis in 2020, they would shelve him for the season … they’re not because they don’t.

    Jameis will get PAID $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
