Vernon Hargreaves Speaks

November 19th, 2019

It appears booted Bucs cornerback Vernon Hargreaves stayed classy and resisted throwing anyone working at One Buc Palace under the bus when he spoke to Houston media yesterday, but Hargreaves did drop one noteworthy nugget.

As recorded by the Houston Chronicle, Hargreaves said he noticed a different football environment after about a week and a gameday with the Texans.

The Bucs’ first round pick in 2016, Hargreaves was inactive for Houston on Sunday but is expected to play Thursday night.

“Being on a winning team, it’s different,” Hargreaves said. “The atmosphere is different. The attitude is different. I like that. I’ll do what I have to do to be ready to go.”

With the Buccaneers, Hargreaves was the elder statesman in a young secondary. With the Texans, he’s part of a group that includes veterans like Johnathan Joseph, Mike Adams, Jahleel Addae and Tashaun Gipson.

“Coming from Tampa, I was the oldest in the group,” Hargreaves said. “This is a different group. They know what it should look like. They have a high expectation. …”

Yes, Joe can imagine life is different now for Hargreaves. The Texans have not won three of the last four AFC South titles because they have a losing culture infecting their locker room.

He did stay classy but im sure he was thinking THANK YOU TAMPA BAY FOR LETTING ME GO IM SURE I WILL DO BETTER HERE.

  2. bucafaninchina Says:

Enjoy the new lease on life, bucko!

Now if we can just figure out a way to get Jamel Dean on the field…

  3. Cometowin2 Says:

Too bad he didnt work put. Another wasted pick for us.

  4. Tye Says:

he definitely got the BEST end of the deal.. Surprised many others didn’t play half hearted the next game for their career sake that they get released and may play for a playoff team for the rest of the year..

  5. ClodHopper Says:

Fixing the culture is job #1 for BA. Bigger than fixing Jameis. Now get over your boner about the refs and fix this sht!!

  6. Pewter power Says:

They know what it should look like. Well we will see hope they like you giving 15 yard cushion to receivers and styl getting beat deep

  7. Tom S. Says:

You really have to consider the misevaluation in Hargreaves character and leadership when you consider that he did have a former multiple time Pro Bowl corner in Brent Grimes, TJ Ward, and one time Pro Bowler Alterraun Verner when he was a rookie. This was Hargreaves 4th year, he would be a senior if this was a college team, it’s time to step up or step out.

I also don’t recall Lavonte David or Gerald McCoy needing a ton of veteran support in order to receive a second contract with the team so one of the bigger whiffs Jason Licht made was the character evaluation of the guy he wasted the 11th overall pick of the 2016 draft on (and the entire draft class for that matter).

  8. Petty Officer Buc Says:

Vernon simply never learned how to be a professional here in Tampa. Who was there for him to learn from? Brent Grimes?

Now I doubt he turns into an All-Pro anytime soon, much less a Pro Bowler, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he can turn it around in Houston.

  9. Tye Says:

PFT telling it like it is:
‘Nothing cures a football hangover faster than facing Jameis Winston.’

LoL… That is the mindset of every team that sees the Bucs on their schedule!
Sean Peyton even said so before the game last Sunday, and he was proven right.

  10. Mister Negative Nancy Says:

Classier than his pig of a former coach

  11. Jean Lafitte Says:

or a crappy @ss QB that can’t beat himself

  12. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Great post Tye and completely related to the article about Hargreaves. FFS some of you guys have so much hate.

  13. TheBucsAnthem Says:

I’ve never seen a terrible cornerback such as himself brag almost after every play like he did something….

    …..he’s straight up terrible

  14. Jean Lafitte Says:

^^^My comment was related if you were referring to me

Joe can imagine life is different now for Hargreaves. The Texans have not won three of the last four AFC South titles because they have a losing culture infecting their locker room.

  15. 813bucboi Says:

3 defensive players that we thought we didnt need are on winning teams…lol….GMC, KWON, VHG….

the player that most wanted to keep is stuck with another losing team…hump….lol…

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  16. diggler Says:

Go get it VHIII wish you the best!

  17. Jean Lafitte Says:

Look, he may have been lucky to end up on winning team but CB’s are a limited commodity. Even so, there’s no guarantee that VHG will be on the team after Thursday, unless he does play above what he has done here. Which if he does, it’s just proof he was a loafing phony who could care less about his teammates and winning attitude. Did he poison our team or do we have others here who poisoned him? We’ll see Thursday night.

  18. firethecannons Says:

he is not NFL good and it will be obvious on gameday look forward to watching it unfold

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Good idea to never speak ill of your former employers……

  20. stpetebucsfan Says:

I’m over VHG. I wish him no ill will. But I also do not care if he got run for lack of hustle…falling prey to his boys and Puff the Magic Dragon…none of that really matters in the end.

He’s just too slow to play that position in the NFL. I’m not normally a Licht basher but drafting a 200lb 5-10 DB who runs a 4.5 40 doesn’t seem to make sense. Hindsight is 20/20.

But….Licht is not the only moron…consider what was going on in that draft…

VHG was ranked the top cornerback prospect in the draft by DraftScout.com and NFL analyst Daniel Jeremiah, was ranked the second best cornerback in the draft by NFL analysts Mike Mayock, Lance Zierlein, and Bucky Brooks, and was ranked the second best defensive back in the draft by Sports Illustrated and NFL analyst Charles Davis.

IE There was a consensus among the “experts” that VHG was the 1st or 2nd best DB.

This is why I keep screaming…stop talking about the draft…and if you must..let’s talk about going the Chucky way…everybody here but me seems to idolize Chucky.

He freaking traded one of the BEST pass rushers in the league and a WR and made moves to pile up a lot of draft picks. How is that working out? Pretty well eh? AGAIN…75% chance of success in the TOP FIVE…50% for the remainder of the first round. Two picks give us a good shot at a true stud.

So figure out how to get some more picks not losing to get a higher one. If we can get OJ back on the field and he does OK he should fetch a #1…That’s a start…two #1 picks sure look nice.

  21. bojim Says:

Thanks Vernon. Best of luck. I’m sure we’ll be watching you for the rest of the season.

  22. Cobraboy Says:

Too bad he wasn’t enough of a leader to change the culture.

He’s better off sucking on another team’s success instead of creating it.

  23. Buc believer Says:

The culture rot starts from the head on down….. First the Glazers gang. That group of spoiled entitled never had to have a real job kids have destroyed the team. Next it’s Jason Licht with his high forehead and his 100 IQ he is by far the dumbest most clueless GM in the history of GMs. Then it’s Bruce Arians who thinks he is the smartest most well rounded coach in the NFL. He is so smart he is going to have a coach for every single player on the team and he will also be the first to have the first female coach. He is so smart that he will throw a challenge flag when he claims he knows he has no challenges just to prove a point to the refs. And then our problems continue on from there. Just go down the roster.

  24. Dewey Selmon Says:

He’s not going to give any bulletin board material with the Bucs on his schedule in a couple of weeks. He is from Tampa also so he probably doesn’t want to make any local enemies. He could be retired at the end of the year if the Texans also decide he sucks and cut bait. If he makes it that far. or he could have a 10 year career. maybe he should of been a 2nd round pick.

  25. FortMyersDave Says:

I hate to say this but when the Texans play the Bucs will anyone be surprised if VH3 is their slot corner and gets a pick when Winston targets him. You can’t script this stuff. VH3 was a bust in Tampa and I doubt Houston would drop $9 million for him in 2020 but he could become a backup somewhere….

  26. BigHog Says:

BUCS believer: don’t be mad at BA …we have had a number of losing coaches come here over the past 10 years …This team is not a ONE year fix! You guys are so quick to dump everything and that is the main reason we keep losing!!

  27. Buc1987 Says:

    Hargreaves is trash!!!

    Texans will learn that soon.

  28. cmurda Says:

I trust in B.A. Too many fans are used to the losing culture and far too pessimistic. I get it. I fall into the trap also especially when emotions take hold during the games. Truth of the matter is give B.A. a draft here. There just wasn’t enough time to remedy the multitude of holes that Licht has failed to patch. I believe we could be a comeback team of the year candidate next year. If Licht remains the GM after this year, as sac-religious as that is, then he just got an upgrade because of B.A. Bruce knows what it takes to win and he knows where the talent needs to be regarding draft picks. A stark contrast from Mr. Aguayo drafter. I think it’s borderline insane that the Glazers would keep Licht but if I were a betting man, I’d put my money on Licht staying.

  29. Mike Johnson Says:

Sometimes we think the worst has happened to us when..It is actually a golden opportunity in disguise. I know. I once lost a job to find a triple pot of success at the other depot I found. Hargreaves will not only be a better man for getting dumped in Tampa, he will gain valuable experience from a winning culture. Sometimes you gotta be forced out to find the better..within you.

  30. BeeBucs Says:

Hargreaves CAN’T cover any NFL WRs, that was his problem… Also HE was one of the main reasons for losing (NFL Worst Pass Defense with him at the corner position). Let us see what he does Thursday night against the Colts for the division lead. Bet you he is the targeted weakness.

  31. WAYTOGOBUCS Says:

Get canned and get a better job… even if you suck! Who else on this team is going to jump ship? Hopefully, this does not become a trend and we win out.

  32. BrianBucs Says:

Just another wasted 1st round pick by Jason Licht

  33. Pelbuc61 Says:

As long as the Glazer dweebs are calling the shots, Licht is GM, JW is QB and BA is HC, this franchise is doomed. Licht has destroyed the roster to a point it will take years to recover assuming a new competent GM arrives and that’s not gonna happen so sit back and endure many more years of this debacle. This franchise is in total denial when the incompetence is so clear and evident.

  34. Howard Cosell Says:

    Lol…we’re pathetic……glasers must be proud

  35. Slugglife Says:

They’ll have him in for one game as a starter and realize why he was realeased. He’ll bail on tackles but have 10 tackles from behind while the guy he’s covering makes 14 catches for 80 yards and two TDs.

Best of luck to the Texans. BTW VH3, you did nothing to make this a winning team.

  36. Slugglife Says:

And look here- 813 called me the dumbest poster on JBF.

    “LOL”

  37. Slugglife Says:

Not sue what D Wats. Stats are, but maybe he was talking about a defense that gets a rest every once in while. Not a pick after a defensive stand (that most likely VH3 had nothing to do with.)

  38. Slugglife Says:

On an unrelated note, have any of you guys who talk abut the priveleged seen the article on BSPN about mark Walton and the “privelege” he’s received from the legal system? And the NFL?

Hopefully, some of us priveleged whiteys could be so lucky. Still waiting on my privelege check and my Kardashian/Cochran get out of jail free card.

  39. DaBux Says:

VH3 just joined a team that got its teeth kicked down their throats.

He can help them understand how that feels.

  40. Clw JB Says:

Far better talent and depth than our CB group, but VHIII is not a quality starter, no matter what city he is in

We can only hope he is lined up 1 on 1 with ME or Godwin, please!!!!

  41. Jeffbuc Says:

Petty officer buc your comment is what I can’t believe I am about to say this is what tmaxx is talking about accepting mediocrity. I doubt he turns into an all pro or a prob bowler but he will turn it around. He was the 11th overall pick. The second corner drafted behind only jalen Ramsey he should be an all pro or a pro bowler not a we are happy if he is serviceable. 11th overall picks are suppose to be perennial pro bowler who sign second contracts with there team. Yet you are rooting for a guy who hit dogged it and loaded his way to getting released from your supposed favorite team. He was so bad that your are team gave up on him and straight released him. And you wish him luck and hope he does good and turns his career around for another team. Tmmaxx you are right this is the stupidest fan base I have ever seen. A guy we drafted didn’t pan out because of lack of caring or want to and bucs fans hope he starts caring now and playing hard. Are you kidding me with this. I hope he gets torched his first game and they don’t play him another snap and he is released in the offseason and never heard of again. Give me his talent and I would be a household name and riche beyond belief. But he is lazy and didn’t try and you supposed bucs fans are rooting for him to succeed when he screwed us and didn’t care enough to do all the things necessary to be successful. We didn’t miss on the pick the talent is there. We missed on the work ethic. That is the problem. Some guys work there tail off until they sign a 20 million dollar contract then they think they arrived and they don’t need to do anything but show up. The guys that make it are the guys that want o be the best damn the money and still show up at 5 am every morning and are watching film and doing footwork drills with their coach. And a ting to know every tendency of the next receiver they are facing. I would bet he only watched film because he was told to didn’t look at him self to see if he could get a read on what the receiver would tip to him. He just made his money and said coach calls man or zone I play man or zone.

  42. Lamarcus Says:

Vh3 is garbage. Didn’t even try to.be good and I think he was the one talking about girls after the Titans game.

I think he knows he can’t play of course it wasn’t the Bucs fault

  43. Lamarcus Says:

I bet he can’t even intercept JW.

  44. jjbucfan Says:

Will be real interesting if he comes out of the gates hot. Glazers head might explode, but might be what we need to get Licht Sh*tcanned

  45. FortMyersDave Says:

Bucbeliever makes a great point concerning the decay from the head down at One Buc; this team has been spiraling down since Malcolm was incapacitated by the stroke and the lads took over…… It is hard to believe the culture of losing will ever disappear concerning the Bucs unless the changes start at the top down as this season has proven that coaching is not the only issue the franchise has had over the past dozen years; it starts with ownership and the front office.

As far as VH3, if you look at the 2016 draft the first 2 bonafide busts on that board were both CBs: Eli Apple at 10 for the Giants (and they at least pawned him off for a draft pick from the Saints) and VH3 by the boys @ One Buc at 11…… Licht is about as good at drafting CBs as Matt Millen was drafting WRs for the Ford family in Detroit.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  49. Gettinthebucs Says:

If Hargreaves looks like a pro bowler in Houston we gotta clean house. The outrage will be catastrophic. Team glazer will be forced to act.

  50. jmarkbuc Says:

Vern will show what he is, if he even makes it onto the field.

Expect his release from Houston sooner than later.

  51. Bucamania Says:

I guess the Bucs losing culture is why he couldn’t cover ANYONE. Good riddance Vern. I expect to see you on some TD highlights soon.

  52. John Mason Says:

One thing for sure….VH3 has signed for a lot less money…so geeing cut by the Buc’s did cost him some money for sure.
