The Challenge Is Consistency

November 17th, 2019

Rare feat within sight.

Joe got a rather interesting Twitter last night.

Someone decided to do design a graphic on who he considers the top college quarterbacks eligible for the draft next spring. (No, Tua Tagovailoa was not included as the author says Tua is “out.”)

Joe was going to respond with the following but went to bed instead:

America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, very easily could finish the season leading the league in passing yards. First, that is just mind-blowing to think a Bucs quarterback would ever do that. Second, Joe can’t recall the last time a team ran off a quarterback leading the the league in passing yards.

Welcome to Tampa Bay!

In the Saints-Bucs video preview below, Super Bowl-winning coach Brian Billick notes Bucco Bruce Arians has Jameis playing at an elite level right now.

Of course, Billick said that when Jameis has eye-popping games, he can just as easily barf on himself the next week. So the lone challenge for Arians, Billick believes, is getting Jameis to be more consistent.

Watch Billick in the NFL Network video below.

Jameis = aka Fraud Franchise QB

Once this franchise gets a true Franchise QB….it will always be a bottom feeder in the NFL.

  2. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    THEY’RE ALL FREAKING CLOWNS^^^^^^^^

I just don’t understand all these stupid brainwashed commentators when they say all this crap about Jameis like this.

OBVIOUSLY……they’re not longtime Bucs fans who’ve been watching Jameis poop all over himself for the last 5 years.

  3. DooshLaRue Says:

Ha ha ha ha ha ha!

    What a sucker.

  4. BigHog Says:

KEEP BA and FAMOUS and continue to grind, draft an O/Lineman and a D/Linman and a RB IN THAT ORDER, LETS secure a win today to start a rare trend in Tampa …a WIN STREAK!!

  5. Onetrickpony Says:

The only consistency around here is inconsistency

  6. Humaira holley Says:

@anthem you must be relatively young… whe was the last time we had a franchise QB before Jameis. How about NEVER!!! Make it sound so easy. Iā€™m so sick of the old days where scoring above 17 points was a great day. Careful what u wish for.

  7. Hodad Says:

With Evans, and Goodwin to throw to he should be up there in passing yards. What hurts the Bucs is he also leads the league in turnovers. He’s always in the top of that stat. So what fans want Joe, is a QB who can throw to Evans, and Godwin, but not constantly give the ball away. Why can’t we have that Joe?

  8. Hamsandwichtime Says:

Itā€™s a team sport. Give Jameis a Running game and defense that isnā€™t alway giving up leads at the end of games and keep building

  9. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ Humaira holley

    * I am no kid and have been watching the bucs play since the days of Hardy Nickerson

    * I’ve also had the pleasure and privilege of coaching football as well so I have a deeper understanding of the game

Jameis is who he is at this point of his career……..he’ll never change or be consistent enough to really be a Franchise QB.

Jameis has all the tools to be a Franchise QB but unfortuantely he doesn’t have it consistently in between the ears…..he just makes dumb decisions.

Coaches and fans all have marveled at times when Jameis has looked Amazing but after 5 years and virtually no progression and still consistent bad decision making……it’s time to cut the cord from Jameis and for this Franchise to move on.

  10. Hamsandwichtime Says:

Toā€™s …. yes he needs to protect the ball better, however Jameis has always played in a vertical mid to deep passing game that is more prone to this. He is not Johnny check down. Even with occasional error your consistently hanging 30+ point every game, shou be accounting for more wins. To pin this all on JW is naive that NI-EVE. Invest in Rb and D and see what happens. Go Bucs!!

  11. D-Rome Says:

Leading the NFL in yards is irrelevant.

    17TD – 14INT is not elite.

  12. Hamsandwichtime Says:

@anthem.. I agree with you to a point, however itā€™s against his nature to give up on a play and have seen him do that more often recently. Give him to end of year and evaluate then. Still think he is our best chance

^^^^^^….and after 5 years, that’s not enough time????

This is the #1 problem with our fan base……they keep on thinking “someone or something will “fix” Jameis………but be honest with yourself.

If this iFranchise is smart….they’ll move on at the end of this season. It would be foolish of Jason Licht to pay Jameis Franchise QB money when they can virtually get the same results from a Veteran like Andy Dalton or a Rookie after some coaching……..remember now, there’s the economics of paying Jameis too that’s at play here too.

    #TIMETOMOVEONFROMJAMEIS

  14. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ D-Rome

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^another good point!!!!

You can lead the league in yards all you want, but that doesn’t win you games…..it’s your decision making that is critical……especially for the most important position on the team and that’s the QB.

I hate all the stat checkers and geeks who think just because a QB is “bombing away” yards that somehow that is the mark or makings of a franchise QB…..because it’s not.

  15. RustyRhinos Says:

Well said BucsAnthem, well said. Potential and Results and Contract and Cap all do have a play here. Or should.

  16. OzziesArmy1 Says:

Itā€™s not translating to wins ..anyone familiar with the square peg in a round hole?? The outrage of Bucs nation when Big Red Andy Daultonā€™s name popped up as a free agent vet available next year was deafening and must have been BLINDING TOO because Dalton had 50wins his first 5 seasons that the Peopleā€™s Temple of Jameis overlooked ..At current pace
Jamarcus Winston will hit 50wā€™s around 2029 …Billick talks to hear himself and from the outside looking in ..it seems like a decent point unless you see each weeks continual mistakes with your own eyes and plays you cannot defend as ā€˜Rookieā€™ anymore ..

  17. El Buco Realisto Says:

    @joe

How is it so “mind blowing” when the Bucs was the best team for passing yards in 2018 while playing musical chairs with the qb’ s last year???????????

And if it is so mind blowing, in 2017 the Bucs were 4th in the league in passing yards, only being out of 1st by a measly 4.1 yards a game out of first?????????

So funny to see the coverage or rather favoritism by the local media!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. Kobe Faker Says:

    “BucAnthem

    Good points

Kobe has followed JW throughout his whole football career. Kobe is a JW apologist knowing that sooner he will finally get it and grow out of the mental clumsiness …

Kobe has now true doubt that this switch will occur no matter how many games he plays. JW cant juggle too many options and quick decisions.

He needs a total coach/playcaller ala Sean Mcvay to make most of the decisions and simplify the process…ie the audibles that JW calls. 99% it is wrong and leads to negative plays. He needs to be in a west coast offense

JW is physically gifted with downfield anticipitation skillset I have not seen since Dan Marino but

He is limited mentally (football wise)”

He likes to throw fastballs with a long wind up best suited for a relief pitcher.
Hey!!! Just like Uncle Leftywich!!!!! Waow

BTW his footwork still sucks, he throws high and has zero touch half the time.
Not a deep ball thrower over the top…… line drive thrower. Worst decision maker. Did I say total IDIOT????

Letā€™s go SAINTS!!!!! WE NEED THE BEST DRAFT PICK POSITION FOR JUSTIN

  22. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ Kobe Faker

    Kobe,

I don’t think any coach can “fix” Jameis……he is who he is.

Some people can handle pressure but still perform…….Jameis is pretty much the opposite.

There were some many times I’m watching….I’ll watch the opposing defense and I’m just wondering what audibles that the coach gave Jameis to check in and out of……and I can count so many times that he shoud’ve check out and into another play.

I’ve also watched inexplicable things that he does that average QBs just don’t do as well.

Alot of people didn’t like Koetter for various reasons but I loved the fact that he didn’t play this coaching political BS and not say the truth. The fact of the matter that when he said he didn’t no what else more to do and then bench Jameis…….that was refresching to hear and see.

Koetter knew, just like all true BUCS devoted fans know that Jameis is unfixable and he’s one of main components to the Bucs losing so much.

I really think this franchise should’ve just kept Koetter…..then booted Jameis at the end of the season and then get Dalton, Rivers, or a rookie QB.

Koetter was creative, knew how to emply the TEs, and actually had a better more rythmic passing game.

I really do not like how Arians and Leftwich are calling the offense now and it’s actually not helping Jameis one bit.

The glore or “nfl coach of the year” from Arians has completely wore off……..

The offense looks terrible because they really aren’t maximizing the talents of Evans, Goodwin, and Howard………….

We should be killing teams offensively……but when you have a QB constantly making bad decisions and a BABY ROOKIE offensive coordinator that just are uncreative……………

    ok I’m done complaining…….for now

All good points and so true^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

The eyes are the keys to the soul

All fans should take a game and try to focus on his eyes….

I’m telling you guys…….he looks either:

    LOST, CONFUSED, PANIC

on soooooooooooooo many plays……..it’s not even funny….just focus on his eyes

WHY DO YOU THINK DEFENSE READS THE QBs EYES??????………..

JAMEIS literally stares down receivers instead of going through all of his reads.

……….this is year FIVE…….5 YEARS PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!

  25. Bucsfan951 Says:

As much as Winston pisses me off sometimes, you gotta tag him this coming year and pray Licht can fix the damn secondary and bring in a new rt. Problem is, I donā€™t trust Licht to do any of that. Heā€™ll do the ol trade back, pick up picks and waste them. Itā€™s what he does best!

  26. tmaxcon Says:

if he is so lost and confused and folds under pressure please explain having 2 receivers in the top ten, owns all bucs franchise records at 25, has led the bucs multiple times down the field late in the 4th qtr to a lead, only to have the mentally weak defense lay down and give the lead back…. jameis is the bucs only hope and savior….. the only true savior…. get used to it ladies… give him a nfl caliber oline and a middle of the pack running back and he will succeed won’t be in tampa. glazers have no intentions of winning they don’t need to they have trained low standard bucfan well.

  27. Bucsfanman Says:

Jameis has been consistently INCONSISTENT his entire career.

  28. DooshLaRue Says:

If the Bucs are so bad historically, then what the hell do team leading stats mean?
Itā€™s like being the smartest kid on the short bus.

  29. Pete I Says:

His next turnover will be his 95th.

    That is extremely consistent.

    So nothing to worry about.

  30. Anonymous Says:

Eureka! Like this article didn’t say anything folk don’t already know. Winston’s yards include lots of garbage yards. Winston also leads the league in turnovers and imagine how bad he’d be if he didn’t have Evans and Godwin. Winston is not a winner. He is a career loser, not a leader, certainly not elite. The fact we’re past the halfway point still talking about inconsistent play and poor decisions speaks for itself.

  31. Jean Lafitte Says:

He’ll throw 5 40 yard passes today and go over 300 yards with 3 turnovers while we still lose the game by the margin of his turnovers but hey at least he threw over 300 yards because of 5 40 yard completions. This is stupid. Consistency doesn’t mean constant turnovers.

  32. Tbbucs3 Says:

Leading the NFL in yard is not ā€œirrelevantā€ at all.

It shows that your able to move the ball up and down the field which is something Jameis does very well.

An inability to move the ball at QB is a much larger problem for a quarterback than having a turnover problem.

    So clearly not ā€œirrelevantā€.

  33. Alanbucsfan Says:

Shaun Oā€™Hara- ā€œ…he leads the league in turnovers, youā€™re not going to beat the Saints if you continue to do that…ā€

    But Shaun, donā€™t you know itā€™s the OLineā€™s fault, itā€™s the running gameā€™s fault, itā€™s the Secondaryā€™s fault…

    WRONG!!!!!!^^^^^^^^^^

STATS ARE FOR LOSER!!!! (thanks raheem morris)

Did you really go there quoting STATS??????………seriously, stats????

Lets just neglect and forget about everything else he’s done for 5 years if that’s your trane of thought.

Also, since we’re at your low level…….and if want the galzers to keep losing….then go ahead and sign Jameis to another for years for $130 million.

You can guareentee this franchise will remain as bottom feeders of the NFL.

You talk about “trained low standard bucfan” but yet you cannot even raise your standards by saying crap like……. “give him a nfl caliber oline and a middle of the pack running back and he will succeed”

…….I mean really????? You post crap like this but yet you’re telling bucs fans to “raise their standards”?????

With Jameis……it’s always someone’s fault why he doesn’t perform well.

Why are we at this state now….and why can’t people recognize that you cannot fix his decision making.

  42. Tbbucs3 Says:

^ Its time for the *secondary* to grow up and not suck!!!

    It’s simple…..
The Bucs offense (lead by JW) is good. Not great but good.
The Bucs defense on the other hand, is bad. Not bad but atrocious.

  43. Oregonbucsfan Says:

Joe, I would like to see that list of QBs possible in next years draft. I predict we are one more Famous Jameis implosion before we start looking at Griffen(?).
Watched Hurbert last night. Don’t worry you west coast haters, he’ll be drafted before we get to him. Maybe Okies” Hurts??

I’m so sick of watching JW’s up and down play that it is getting difficult to even watch. Apparently, at least 1/3 of game crowd agrees from looks of the stands. Glaziers HAVE to notice that trend.

  44. JimmyJack Says:

    Your all schmucks

  45. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Honestly…………….

As others have pointed out……I don’t know think the Glazers are serious about winning

    – They resign a GM who’s consistently overdrafting nonfit scheme players or not drafting players of need…LIKE OFFENSIVE LINEMAN

    – They get Bruce Arians out retirement then is okay with Byron Leftwich calling the offensive plays? What?

    – See Vernon Hargraves release and think and then go back to point #1

…….and if they resign Jameis……they are signaling to all bucs fans and to the NFL that they are not serious about winning

  46. Stevek Says:

Bout to throw on my Jameis Jersey and toot like hell for him and the Bucs.

    17TD-14INT-10Fumbles/4Lost Fumbles-37 sacks-taking a long time to get rid of the ball-less than 60% completion %

These arenā€™t not elite results and our team is 3-6 for a reason. I hope Jameis can put it all together, but I am going to be cautious with my optimism as the turnover machine could get cranking today. I hope not, but we just donā€™t know.

After 4.5 years with this QB, our game to game results are like a box of chocolates, you never know what youā€™re gonna get?

  53. Defense Rules Says:

I like the title Joe … ‘The Challenge is Consistency’. And not just for Jameis & the offense, but even more-so right now for the defense. This whole Bucs’ team suffers from inconsistency.

Regardless of how well he performs, I still have doubts that Jameis will be the Bucs’ starting QB next year. If he does poorly this 2nd half, he gets run off. If he does well, we can’t afford him at $30 mil give or take. We’ve already got too much money sunk into other players, and to re-sign our key FAs AND Jameis would break the bank. that’s how we got into this mess in the first place.

Like BucsAnthem said, Jameis is who he is. But it’s not about ‘fixing Jameis’ IMO, it’s about maximizing his strengths & minimizing his weaknesses. The play-calling during the first half of the season didn’t do that. It produced a lot of yards & even a lot of points, but it was lopsided production & maximized Jameis’ weaknesses (ball security) instead of minimizing them.

In the 1st 8 games, Bucs scored 230 points … 28.8 PPG average. Excellent on the surface, but take out the Rams game (55 points) and we’re down to 175 points … 25.0 PPG. Curiously we had 2 games where we scored in the 30’s (Giants 32 pts & Seahawks 34 pts) where we lost BOTH of them, because our defense allowed more. Bummer. Remove those 3 games & we’ve scored 109 pts in the remaining 5 games … 21.8 PPG.

The reason for the huge swing in game-to-game production? TURNOVERS. 15 of our 21 TOs came in those 5 games. And one of the biggest reason for the turnovers? Jameis got pummeled in each of those other 5 games where we only scored in the teens & 20’s in points. In those 5 games we played 4 very good defenses (49ers, Panthers twice, Saints & Titans). Jameis was sacked 22 times (4.4 sacks/game) and took 40 QB Hits (8 per game). In all fairness we did win ONE of those 5 games (thanks in part to Cam only putting up 14 pts).

So yes we’ve scored a LOT of points, but our scoring has been erratic. Lopsided. Yes 28.8 PPG looks good for 8 games, but when we’ve only scored 21.8 PPG in FIVE of those 8 games … and lost 4 of those 5 … it MIGHT be trying to tell us something.

  54. Jean Lafitte Says:

^^^Just shows how polarizing he is.

  55. ClodHopper Says:

You know how I know Jameis is going to have a bunch of turnovers today? I’m starting to believe in him again. Never fails.

  56. Greg Says:

Weā€™re dead last in scoring defense.. if our defense was just average weā€™re in the hunt for a playoff spot. No QB is winning consistently with this defense and thatā€™s a fact.

  57. Defense Rules Says:

@Hamsandwichtime … “Itā€™s a team sport. Give Jameis a Running game and defense that isnā€™t alway giving up leads at the end of games and keep building”.

Been preaching that for years, BUT … the real issue is PAYING FOR IT. We put so much into our QB, WR & OL that there’s nothing left for quality RBs or defense (especially veterans for the Secondary). Everybody moans about the Secondary, but it’s down to 9 defensive backs (8 today) costing less ($9 mil) than our 1 Center makes ($10 mil). Perhaps something’s wrong with that picture? (Hint: it’s called piss-poor salary Cap management but you didn’t hear it from me).

  58. BucsBandit Says:

How quickly the Jameis-Homers on this site forget that Ryan Fitzpatrick put up the SAME big yardage and TD numbers with our offensive weapons. Winston is nothing special.

  59. Donnie wish we were better Buc fan Says:

The reason he has so many turnovers is because he has so many yards/attempts. The more he throws the more int ratio.

I don’t think he should be a high volume QB.
I don’t think this team is well enough put together as it seems to some.
I don’t think Jason Licht should have a job next year.

Ownership needs to move on from this guy.

What Ronde Barber up to? Old Bucs seem to be good GMs.. JS

  60. Donnie wish we were better Buc fan Says:

    In 2016

7 of the 9 wins JW had 33 attempts or less, out of those only 3 games 33, 32, 32 were more than 30.

    Only winning season.
