Return Of The Screens

November 13th, 2019

Success with screens.

You have to give Bucs offensive coordinator Bryon Leftwich credit for something.

Yes, the Bucs are one of the top scoring teams in the NFL. That’s a big plus. Also, Leftwich has answered the prayers for many Bucs fans.

When former Bucs coach Dirk Koetter was around, Bucs fans used to stomp their feet, irked that Koetter didn’t often run screen plays to keep defenses modestly honest. Opponents feared the Bucs’ run game about how Joe fears ladybugs.

(Now Joe has no data to back up that Koetter didn’t like screen plays but that was a bone of contention for several Bucs fans.)

Well, the screen play has returned to Tampa Bay. The good people of NFL Films, who cobble together data for BSPN’s NFL Matchup, have noticed the Bucs have produced some of the most yards gained with screen passes in the NFL.

Again, per NFL Films, the Bucs are third in in yards gained with screen passes. The Bucs average 7.7 yards per screen, which is pretty good as well.

So celebrate by raising your mug of coffee this morning and ignoring work.

The screen play is back in Tampa Bay!

Credit ROJO for the return of Screen Passes. He has turned into a real threat, with these screen passes.
One day, he is gonna break one.

  2. Tbbucs3 Says:

It’s either a screen or a long devoloping pass play. Where is the rythem intermediate passing game? This offense Leftwhich is running is not QB Friendly.

  3. Bradinator Says:

Screens are the single best way to keep the pass rush down to just lineman, since the screen kills blitzes. Rojo had a great game last week in the creen game. It’s just an extra weapon they have to watch for. Stack Godwin and Evans on that, and a returning OJ Howard, it’s gonna be tough to defend us. If only we had a Defense to hold those leads.

  4. Jean Lafitte Says:

yea it all came in the last game ..it took 41/2 seasons for JW to finally complete more than two consecutive screens in a row

  5. Eric Says:

Let’s go get a great screen pass throwing QB.

    Awsome!

  6. Jean Lafitte Says:

    awesome

Yea a little to late dont u think.

  8. Frank Pillow Says:

More high % throws, including those to the RBs, WR and TEs, via screens and in the flat are in order…let playmakers make plays. Why has that been so hard for any of our HC/OCs to figure out?!?!?

    It’s ‘Byron’ Joes.

  10. orlbucfan Says:

Hoo-ray!!!!!! Now, how about more sweeps, bootleg options, a QB lateral (whole da## Bucs world would suffer shock), etc. WE HAVE THE PLAYERS!!!!!!!

  11. Kobe Faker Says:

“OJ is probably the NFL best receiver in the little screen game

the play vs Carolina at London is like taking candy

put OJ in the slot. throw downfield to MeMe and Godwin and short passing attack with OJ and RoJo

In the redzone isolate OJ on 1 side and run a out or a slate inside with JW3 rolling out away from pressure

It is impeachable level crimes that these BA/BL twins are committing”

    Whistleblowing Faker

  12. teacherman777 Says:

Sneaks, screens, and slants like the Patriots.

    Heard it first from Teacherman!

    And we ran a sneak!

    Finally!!

    Go Bucs!!

  13. BucEmUp Says:

Why celebrate something that took him half the season to figure out? I will give him credit for two weeks of good playcalling, and guve him crap for every ither predictable game he called that have already taken this team out of tge playoffs.Lets see if the god playcalling continues but it took way too long.Too little too late

  14. jjbucfan Says:

Let’s give him some credit BucEm, Koetter NEVER figured it out, LOL

Only thing Leftwich feels comfortable with Jay Miss executing!! Better stick with it!! If #3 starts chucking it down field and under distress we know whats gonna happen!! Same things that have happened the last 5 years!! Go Bucs!!👍🏈

  16. Travis Bray Says:

Screens aren’t just to the running backs. In fact one could argue the screen game to running backs has not been good all year until last week against the Cardinals. Jameis threw a pick six in one instance early this year, and others the running backs (Dare) would keep running into their offensive lineman.

With that said, we have ran a lot of WR screens and TE screens this year. Some of the TE screens (namely those which would have been touchdowns) have been called back due to holding on the offense.

We are still a work in progress, but I believe we are heading in good direction.

  17. Bucsfanman Says:

    What’s good Tandyman?!
Geez, how could nfl level coaches be so blind? So many posters have cried for this play! Want to keep defenses honest? Throw the freakin screen!

  18. stpetebucsfan Says:

You need your head on swivel to be a Buc’s fans. Things change a lot here.

So my impression was that we drafted ROJO for this very reason.

Barber was going to do the heavy lifting due to fear that ROJO was not going to be effective running between the tackles…and we’d use ROJO’s speed with screens. Then last year it appeared ROJO couldn’t catch.

So ROJO gains muscle and we do run him between the tackles…and now he can catch…ROJO in open space is scary for any defender. His reasonably success at running between the tackles makes it harder for DC’s to assume pass play when ROJO enters the backfield.

  19. Jeffbuc Says:

I have been screaming for screens for years. Another team in the afc has had a pretty good 20 year run off mostly an offense consisting of screens. Never understood why other teams don’t run 20 screens and quick pick slants a game like the patriots. Just never understood in a copy cat league no one copy cats there offense. Draft some late round fast reviewing backs and small gas t receivers ball is out in 2 seconds offensive lineman look great go to pro bowls sign big contracts with other teams and stink it up and put new team in salary crap he’ll. Win win for the patriots let people overpay for there overrated talent while they just plug and play cheap contract players and pick up comp picks every year. And trade away picks every year to acquire as many as they can because they realize it is a crap shoot pick as many as you can. A 5th round guy if you pick 4 of them might pan out. I know white may be great one day but would I rather have traded back and drafted to late first round picks who cost the same as Devin and hope both pan out and if only one does your still good. Gms try to be to smart and out think themselves. I really feel like I could do as good as a job as licht or if not better. And that is not good for a avid fan to think that way. I want to have the gm that everyone says how does he do it everything he touches turns to gold not coal. Because we all know coal is heavily frowned upon now.

Why does it take the coaches so long to realize whats working & what is not that fans already know. This includes players like Hargreaves & screen plays that Lefttwitch continued to ignore?
