Bruce Arians: “We Gotta Get Rid Of The Bad, The Really Bad”

November 26th, 2019

A relaxed Bucco Bruce Arians took to the One Buc Palace podium yesterday.

Only one discussion topic seemed to rankle him.

That would be turnovers by America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.

Arians quipped that his baldness is tied to Jameis, but then he got serious about Jameis’ two interceptions against the Falcons.

“The jump pass – no, we can’t have that one. We just can’t have that,” Arians said of Jameis’ second interception against Atlanta on Sunday. “Just eat it. Punt it. Your punter is your best friend.”

“We’ve got to get rid of the bad – the really bad, the jump pass. The first one was a great play by [Desmond] Trufant. He’d obviously studied his tape. That’s one of our go-to plays in that formation, so he just undercut it. Jameis might need to see the color. He was looking the safety off, trusting Mike [Evans] to be crossing his face.”

What if Arians and his team of quarterback gurus can’t stop the consistently costly decisions coming from Jameis? What then?

Can a team win a Super Bowl with an inconsistent quarterback? That would become the priority question facing Team Glazer and Arians.

  1. Mike Johnson Says:

Yes Joe, A team can Win a superbowl with a Hellter Skelter QB like Jameis. But you sure as hell better have a good..No Great Defense. And I do mean Great.

  2. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Correct me if I am wrong. Brett Favre won one Super Bowl.

  3. tmaxcon Says:

Inconsistent quarterbacks become consistent quarterbacks when given a nfl caliber offensive line and running backs…

  4. runnerdoc Says:

No, they won’t even get to the play offs without a good defense and Jameis eliminating the big errors. He’s going to get the chance, though. His upside is too high and this roster/team is to far developed not to roll the dice, now.

  5. TOM EDRINGTON Says:

Nope, Jameis can lead this team to consistent 8-8 seasons the way he plays and maybe sneak in a 9-7 now and then, maybe, eventually, but fact is, this team is close to, if not headed for salary cap hell if you pay Jameis.

  6. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Translation…”We gotta get rid of Winston….he’s really bad”

  7. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

After FIVE FREAKING YEARS, does anyone REALLY believe Winston will suddenly become a surgical, precision QB and eliminate STUPID decisions and turnovers? Keep dreaming.

  8. Ndog Says:

Fine let’s just cut him I can’t wait to score 12 points a game again I mean our defense is clearly dominant and our kicker is money. We are clearly in a position to just give up scoring a ton of points, after all who needs points to win?

  9. Old Sombrero Kid Says:

I see 4 to 7 more interceptions this year

  10. LordCornelius Says:

If he can average 3 TD / 0 INT per week he can salvage his season with a 40 TD: 20 INT ratio lol

  11. Bruce Blahak Says:

The answer to the final question is a big fat NO !!! 5 years, no better, and then add the turmoil he’s put this team through with the “other” crap and it should be an easy decision to rid this team of a NEVER will win the big game QB…

  12. Ndog Says:

Salvage his season? Yeah being #2 in both yards and TDs is just pure garbage. My goodness you people clearly have not seen bad offense in the past.

  13. simeon 97 Says:

Joe, you should run a poll of how many people will jump off the ship if they retain Winston for another year.

My guess, it’s probably not in this site’s best interest for the team to retain Winston.

I also think that you’d be naive to think that Bucs brass doesn’t read this to gauge fan interest, as this is probably the best known Bucs media outlet. But then again, why do they need to read a blog when the completely empty stands say it all.

Hopefully no one is fooled AGAIN by jamies late season slightly above average play. He puts up numbers in games and slightly more wins during the season, when the game/season is already over.

Jameis hit 100 turnover this past weekend. Doesn’t that mean he averages nearly 2 per game based on his number of starts?

What do elite QBs average per game? .3-.5?

Draft a QB, get a veteran to mentor him. Show the fans something to get us excited for the future, not another repeat of what we have seen.

  14. Patrickbucs Says:

Yeah NDOG no one else can throw to those weapons lol. What a moronic argument.

  15. Buc1987 Says:

Ndog ….with the same weapons in place. I believe a QB can put up better numbers than Winston and I’m ready to find out.

After FIVE FREAKING YEARS, does anyone REALLY believe Winston will suddenly become a surgical, precision QB and eliminate STUPID decisions and turnovers? Keep dreaming.

^^^No but there is NOBODY out there that’s better man. We are stuck with this guy for years to come.

  17. diggler Says:

    FA wise I mean ^^^

  18. Lamarcus Says:

Me13 and Godwin “meaningless stats” are the only 2 weapons available

    What weapons?

  19. BigHog Says:

This team being in SALARY CAP HELL is not FAMOUS’S fault!!

  20. Robert Says:

“We’ve got to get rid of the bad – the really bad”……I.e. jw

  21. SmoothBayRider Says:

@NDOG You keep saying that this offense won’t score points with a different QB . But Ryan freaking Fitzpatrick put up points with the same offense .

  22. Marine Buc Says:

The Baltimore Ravens won a Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer who was one of the worst starting QBs in NFL history. Four years of suck here then he wins a Super Bowl in Tampa playing for Baltimore.

  23. Buc1987 Says:

    Lamarcus Says:

“Me13 and Godwin “meaningless stats” are the only 2 weapons”

Got Howard too, but they never use him.

Godwin and Evans is more than enough though.

  24. Jaywill Says:

People say I know other qbs can put up these numbers with these wrs. But can they do it while getting hit & pressured as much as he does, without the consistency of a run game he doesn’t have…Its funny Winston gets none of the praise but all of the blame. People won’t point out how inconsistent Mike Evans route running is or his hands. He’ll make the spectacular catch but drop the easy 3rd down or touchdown catch…People keep saying 5 years when his 1st 2 years he did well and lost a tie breaker for the playoffs.
List of qbs to throw 20ints with Arians on their staff Peyton Manning (twice), & Carson Palmer.

  25. Jonny Says:

Jameis is what he is. He isn’t changing a whole lot ever. Question is, while we can do better than Jameis, could we also do worse. There are only 10 QBs in the league that I think are in a higher tier than Jameis because of their consistently good play. The rest are a rollercoaster ride Wentz or bland like Bridgewater, Tannehill and that Colts QB. Some of those bland type QBs won’t lose us games if the defense is really good. But it isn’t. It can be downright horrible at times. Jameis is the right type of qb until at least the defense improves. Once it does a Bridgewater could actually be amazing with our receiving corps.

  26. BrianBucs Says:

I love how so many people thought that Arians was just going to come in here, flip some magic switch, and have Winston be some championship calibre NFL franchise QB.
You can see that Arians is clearly frustrated. He now sees the hand that he has been dealt and it’s not a winner

  27. Matthew Fifer Says:

    @Jaywill

If we can get rid of him and save money at the same time, then yes someone else absolutely could play and do well here. The problem that everyone defended Winston keeps forgetting, if he is not here, it allows us to likely keep some of the better defensive players, get a decent qb and then work on improving the trenches. If we keep him….we basically won’t be able to do any of that because the money it will require to keep him.

Our team will actually get worse in terms of overall talent by keeping him, end of story.

  28. Kobe Faker Says:

“JBF posters think that throwing downfield with anticipation is easy

only about 5 QBs can do that. Jameis is 1 of them

The NFL is full of checkdown Charlies that has a ceiling of making the playoffs

however as they meet the top defenses. the checkdown scheme is easily defeated by the superior defenses”

Kobe “Dont call me Charlie” Faker

  29. View from 132 Says:

Anyone watch Lamar Jackson last night? Checkdowns got him 5 TDs. You have to stay out of bad plays before the big arm 40 yard strikes matter.

  30. Patrickbucs Says:

@Kobe did you hear during the game the commenters saying how much JW has struggled with that so far in his career? The 2nd td pass to Godwin was great anticipation or a great catch to avoid another potential pick for example?

We have a schedule that we could possibly go 4-1, let’s see JW cut down or eliminate the horrible to’s down the stretch and go from there.

  31. Adrnagy Says:

You can have the best qb and still won’t make it to the playoff. Aaron Rodgers hasn’t taken his team to the playoff since the super bowl. Why ?
Even the Lamar , Mahomes , cam etc qb are a 2-3 yr boom. After they suck. This league has shown its about a pocket qb. Great defense and balance offense.
Balance offense look at New England. And defense.

  32. Adrnagy Says:

If we draft a qb ok. But our defense must be good. 30pts a game no way we win regardless who’s at qb.

  33. Jeffbuc Says:

Digger you say there is no one better out there. He leads the lead in interceptions by a lot. He has more 6 than the second place guy. There are 10 QBs who haven’t thrown 6 all year. He has 20 in 11 games. If you can’t find better than that your not trying.
Yeah he has a lot of touchdowns but who wouldn’t he has the number 2 and 3 receiver in the league in yards and mulberry 1 and 4 in touchdowns. He doesn’t make anyone better they make him better. Manziel wouldn’t have been drafted in the first 4 rounds if mike Evans didn’t play with him. And the colossal bust qb from penn state wouldn’t have been drafted without Godwin and Barkley.
A good qb makes receivers better. Isn’t it odd how DeSean went off with Ryan Fitzpatrick at qb and then sucked with jameis at qb. He got sick of being wide open all game only to be overthrown all game. You ever play receiver I ha e and it gets really frustrating when you are open and working your butt off only for the qb to keep throwing balls to you that aren’t even close. Or if he does get one you can catch he is throwing you right into a defender to get clobbered.
Even the announcers during last weeks game on the long Godwin td said jameis threw him open and that’s something jameis hasn’t been good at. We scored 50 against the saints with Fitzpatrick because with these receivers if they get thrown better balls where they you can get some tax Watchout. Look at the deep ball to perriman last game. Any other QB throws that towards the inside and lets the receiver run under it and it’s a 80 yard touchdown. But jameis sails out side to the sideline where he has to stop and make an acrobatic catch and falls. And it is so close it has to be challenged. When he should have been high stepping into the end zone untouched.
And you say we can’t find better than that. Because 10 throws a game he makes are nfl throws 10 are throws you see college qbs make. And 10 are throws you wouldn’t see a high school qb even throw.

  34. Kobe Faker Says:

QBs in the 90s 2000s were throwing as much ints than TDs

i.e Aikman & youngs. Now average QBs are throwing TDs with little Ints

what happened? These charlies are better than HOF Aikman and Steve Young?

the short passing scheme/ getting the ball out with high probable routes THAT ARE VERY DIFFICULT TO INTERCEPT arrived

    legal pick plays
    slants of the LOS
    shallow crosses

JAMEIS HAD 2 SCHEMES IN HIS CAREER AND COULDNT BENEFIT THESE CORE ROUTES

THIS IS THE STAT OF CHECK DOWN CHARLIES

    THERE WAS 15 QBS SIMILAR

20 completions with less than 120 yards”

Kobe “Dont call me Charlie” Faker

  35. miken Says:

“Can a team win a Super Bowl with an inconsistent quarterback? That would become the priority question facing Team Glazer and Arians.”…. ummm hell no, of course not.

  36. TombsEN Says:

Does JW turn the ball over too much? You better believe that he does, but I honestly do not see a better option available out there. We aren’t getting Burrow and Tua blew out his hip, looking at the draft and available FA can anyone say that they would be better than JW? Give JW another year and if he fails sell the farm for Fields or Lawrence. Build this team in the trenches this offseason so a rookie can come in if needs be a take off.

  37. passthebuc Says:

I agree, just get rid of the bad. Goodby JW.

  38. ben Says:

buc fans deserve better the an maybe ok qb.. Winston is NOT the guy to carry the team

  39. Pete I Says:

Pay the fool 100 million. The Glazer babies deserve to lose that money.

    25-40 and 100 turnovers.

His next turnover will be the start of his second 100.

    Sign Winston today!

  40. Jmarkbuc Says:

    TombsEN

Can we pay JW 1/3 of the cap and build the trenches? Especially since a good chunk of the defense is on one year deals this year?

There’s Winston Derangement Syndrome, Winston Nuthugger Syndrome, etc. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a QB that isn’t polarizing and a walking version of Days of our Lives every week, and every season?

  41. MadMax Says:

He’ll be franchised….i see it coming. And thats fine, one more year to mature a little more.

But, i still hope we draft Jalen Hurts bottomish of 2nd-topish of 3rd. You get a QB and RB in one player. I think we could benefit from that even while franchising JW.

  42. Boombang Says:

I totally agree with the first three comments…..Can this team win a Super Bowl with Winston…..The answer is ABSOLUTELY and history tells shows that…..The Steelers won 5 SB with Bradshaw at QB…..They had an all-Pro O-Line, an All-Pro RB in Franco Harris….Hell, we won’t even mention that defense…..All-Pros AND HOFers on both sides of the ball.
Baltimore won with Trent Differ at QB….They had an outstanding O-Line with Ray Rice at RB…..Again, I won’t even mention that great defense led by Ray Lewis.
Hell, the Bucs even won a SB with Brad Johnson at QB. They had a decent O-Line, decent receiver, very good RB…..And again, I won’t mention that great defense with All,-Pros and HOFERs at every levels..
The common theme amongst SB winners is Defense NOT OFFENSE…..A good offense is a plus…..Let’s be HONEST with ourselves, TB isn’t even a playoff contender at this point….Is Winston inconsistent, hell yeah, but even with his inconsistency, he is still a better QB than Bradshaw, Differ, Johnson, and Flacco.
NOT ONE SB winner had an O-Line that ranked in the lower third…..NOT ONE SB winner had a secondary that ranked last in every defensive pass category……Jameis Winston IS THE LEAST WORRY OF THIS TEAM EVEN BEING A PLAYOFF TEAM.
Even with Winston’s high 5 year turnover rate his offense has consistently been ranked in the top 10 and that is with an offense that is primarily ONE DIMENSION…..Nah, Winston ain’t this team’s problem.

  43. Alanbucsfan Says:

One more year under Arians to show he can win
    Excuses are like A holes…..

  44. orlbucfan Says:

BA needs to puncture his ego balloon a little bit. Call a few no-huddle, QB running plays, and 2-minute drills for the Enigma. Results will prove to be very interesting. A lot of airheads here forget that BA is the boss. BL is still an intern.

  45. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Lamar Jackson !….LOL…You either can or you can’t !

  46. stpetebucsfan Says:

“But can they do it while getting hit & pressured as much as he does,”

Actually yes…some can…Wilson…Jackson…Watson…Mahomes frequently turn those plays into 25 yard scampers or broken play throws for 20.

That’s the appeal to many of drafting a “new style” QB.

I don’t know about a new style QB…but if we keep JW we should run him a lot more…when he rolls he’s been very effective even throwing it…puts pressure on the D if they know he’ll take a quick five yards if they give it to him.

He’s incredibly slow but he’s still a very slippery runner..and he’s a big dude. As long as he doesn’t go all Cam and try and truck an LB he’ll be fine. He got down Sunday once when I thought he’d could have picked up the first.

  47. Robert Says:

““JBF posters think that throwing downfield with anticipation is easy

only about 5 QBs can do that. Jameis is 1 of them”

    LOL…that $hit was funny

  48. Craig Says:

This is a salvage season. This is the absolute best that Jameis can play. He isn’t dumb enough not to see the writing on the wall.

Maybe he would have been helped by a QB whisperer, but he would rather just toss balls to Louis Murphy in the off-season.

It is his own fault that this is as good as he will get, as a BUC. Maybe as a backup somewhere he will try harder and finally get his mechanics under control, but it is too late to do it here.

Call Dak and offer him a bank truck full of cash, make him feel wanted, them get a few O-line guys, a running back and Jalen in the draft, if you won’t see what Griffin has now.

  49. DooshLaRue Says:

….. but JW has sooooo much potential.
He’s got a high football IQ.
    He’s Pro-ready.

    His ceiling is so high….

    And so are the Nuthuggers!

    GTFOH JayMiss!!!

  50. Bucsace Says:

The people that think any other team would offer Winston a starting job are delusional, he’ll be lucky if this team offers him a one more year deal, his agent will approach the Bucs with hat in hand

  51. Defense Rules Says:

Bucsace … I think at least 5-6 teams would offer Jameis a starter’s salary if we pass. Every decent NFL HC has enough of an ego to believe that he can ‘fix Jameis’ (BA among them). And IF they can (ie, make Jameis more ‘consistent’ and less of an ATM) then he’ll be a goldmine & worth the big $$$. Huge gamble … and one that hasn’t yet paid off for the Bucs.

Our problem is that we’ve already got huge $$$ tied up in this offense for next year (and the dead Cap cost means we’ll end up keeping most of them). Add in a $27-$30 mil contract for Jameis and a $15-$20 mil contract for Godwin and we’ll be in salary Cap he11 for a long time. Our problem is that we’re spending too much money on too few players. That screwed us this year, and the very same thing will rear its’ ugly head next year.

Right now we have NO depth to the OLine, NO depth in our Secondary, a meh RB group (except for RoJo), NO depth at WR behind Evans & Godwin, limited depth in our DLine & LB position groups, etc, etc. Why?  Depth takes MONEY … of which we had none. The Bucs have been incredibly blessed this year in having relatively few injuries (unlike past years). Our starters & key rotational are warriors, and thankfully the vast majority have been healthy this year. Example: How productive do you think our offense would be if Godwin went down for the rest of the season? Or Donovan Smith? Or Suh or JPP or Vea on the defense? (Suh & JPP are true iron-men IMO).

Sorry, but if the Bucs pay Jameis $27-$30 mil for 2020 (and potentially beyond), kiss off upgrading the offense AND defense. Then we’ll get to listen to Year 6 of excuses when we can’t compete in the NFC South. Salary Cap has to feed 53 mouths, and JL has already committed way too much of it to feeding too few players. This is a woefully unbalanced team and THAT’S why we own the NFC South cellar year after year.

  52. DB55 Says:

at least 5-6 teams would offer Jameis a starter’s salary
    —————-
Pittsburgh and Tomlin. A run game and a nasty def. boy look out.

NE and Bellicheat, a run game and a nasty def. super bowl here we come.

Chargers and Anthony Lynn. A good run game, stout def and weak division.

Oakland and Gruden. A good run game and up and coming defense.

Chicago. Good run game and an excellent def.

Carolina nah JW would do no punk move like sign with a division rival

But I think you see what I did there ….

Can you imagine Gruden and Winston together maaaaannnnnn

  53. Dapostman Says:

Just in the beginning of this season a lot of JBF’s resident genius’s had Trubisky ranked ahead of Winston.

Tells me all I need to know about the clown Buc fans.

  54. DB55 Says:

    Dapost

Don’t forget Mayfield with his 2 all pro RBs, 2 all pro WRs and at least 2-3 pb defenders.

  55. DooshLaRue Says:

    Gruden would tear JayMiss apart.
He’s been coddled his whole career.
He couldn’t handle Fitzmagic being his backup and you think he could handle Gruden going off on him after another STUPID throw?

    You
    Are
    An
    Idiot!!!!

To answer the question you love to always ask DB55….WTFDIK??

    NOTHING

  56. DooshLaRue Says:

Trubisky is close to garbage but consider this:

    He’s thrown 10 TD and 6 Picks, (almost 2 to1) 61% Completions

And his team is in the Wildcard hunt.

    Ouch.

  57. DooshLaRue Says:

    Gruden would destroy JayMiss.
I’d kinda like to see that!

  58. Kobe Faker Says:

The top HC/playcallers dont have to fix JW3

They all know that it’s the outdated scheme he is playing under

Koetter is going to be out of the league next year

After BA gets fired after next year, No team will run this ineffective offense

Mcvay turned Goff to be competent after Fishers offense, so will the team that will sign him

Every team after BA is bounced after next year will be playing under the short passing game

  59. Dapostman Says:

    @Doosh,

Would Trubisky’s Buc team be in the wildcard hunt with his 10/6 ratio?

We all know the answer but I’d like to hear your take.

  60. MTM Says:

Winston would have been traded or let go if he wasn’t picked so high in the draft by Licht. Nobody in the NFL gets 5 yrs to prove themselves. The guy is a bust. Acknowledge it and move on.

  61. Formaly Tampa 2 Says:

Winston is in his 5th year and his play has not gotten any better than year one. To top that a very offensive minded coach was brought in to “fix” Winston and help the offense. Winston has played 11 games this season and is the same TO machine as year one. And the Quarterback whisperer has not repaired Winston, or used his offensive knowledge. Instead he lets his HC in training call the offense. True idiocy is trying something over and over again and expecting a different result. While the Glazer boys make millions whether the Bucs win or lose, at least their Dad had enough pride to make the moves to win games for the Buc fans. At minimum, The Glazers should hire a President with good football knowledge to run the Buccaneers. If not, then they should be so kind as to sell to an owner that has Pride, as well as an interest in profit.

  62. MTM Says:

    Tampa 2 well said.

Its been rinse and repeat for 10 yrs with the same results every year. The offensive game plan is predicated off keeping Winston in low risk situations and he still tosses pick out like candy at Halloween. People that defend him should just look at the current winning teams and what they all have in common. The QB’s do not turn over the ball.

  63. Bucsace Says:

Jameis is a money pit…..Any team that would offer him a starting contract would have to be blind to the red flags…..if you take into account his turnover rate and add to that his off the field problems…
He falls into the high risk category
