Leftwich: Don’t Blame Jameis

November 2nd, 2019

Has his QB’s back.

It seems for the time being, you won’t hear Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich mention the hashtag #BlameJameis in any of his press conferences.

This week at Leftwich’s weekly press conference, he was asked if he could see America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, as the team’s quarterback in the future. Jameis’ contract runs out at the end of the season.

Leftwich not only believes in Jameis, he also added the team is losing games and Jameis is just one cog in the team.

“I feel that way,” Leftwich said of Jameis returning for 2020. “We’re just not doing enough to win football games. This league is so – it’s four or five plays here and there that you’ve just got to really change and really get out of our system just as a team. That comes down to winning the football games.

“If you win some of those games that you lost, it’s all different – the narrative is all different. But we didn’t, so we’ve got to understand that, try to fix those plays and try to hopefully, when we have those opportunities in the future, that we make those plays to win football games.”

Leftwich is dead-on. While Jameis, given the nature of his history, will always have his detractors and that will never change, if the Bucs were 4-3 instead of 2-5, not only would many folks not have the pitchforks out for Jameis, many would be worried about making a wild card run.

But the Bucs are losing. And given Jameis’ history, every pass he throws, no matter the outcome, no matter who may be at fault, if it is an incompletion or worse, an interception, people are going to #BlameJameis.

Daily reminder you are what your record is. When you’re the QB who can’t stop coughing up the ball at soon to be 2-6 the record is what matters above all else. Take the record away he is by no means showing anyone he is a even average franchise QB.

  2. Tye Says:

better yet, a large majority of the fan base would rather you not play jameis and nobody can blame him!

  3. ElBajito43 Says:

Papa BWUCY BWuce And Uncle Leftywich will ALWAYS HAVE Jamy-Pooh’s back.

    IF

  5. Jean Lafitte Says:

Like Ira said, “you know it when you see it”. I don’t see it with Jameis

  6. TampaTown Says:

You can always tell the kind of game Jameis is going to have by how the first offensive series goes. Every. Time.

  7. Rob Says:

Other “franchise” quarterbacks have won more games with less weapons than America’s turnover machine. Jameis is not the only reason we lose though. The Bucs sucked out loud before he got here, and the losing has simply continued. The turnover machine just hasn’t been able to save the franchise like we had hoped he would. All the players and coaches share the blame but when you touch the football more often than anyone but the center, you shoulder the blame more than the rest. Don’t feel sorry for Winston. Some team will take a flier on him and overpay for his services, turnovers and all. The Bucs now look to the draft for another savior. Ground hog day here we come. Go Bucs!

  8. ElioT Says:

What’s the point of this article based off BL’s comments earlier this week?

    Are you defending Jameis?

“It’s four or five plays here or there”…

The QB touches the ball on every offensive snap, and Winston alone accounts for at least two bad plays every game, and that’s being generous.

Not saying it’s all his fault, but when you’re the #1 overall pick in year five, with all that natural talent and weapons, you need to step you’re

  9. ElioT Says:

*you need to step you darn game up!

  10. DB55 Says:

    Too much to overcome.

Last week I saw our LG pull to the outside of the RT to help PASS block. Wow. Now that maybe a thing but I’ve really seen it.

Let say we can block, lol, then we need to catch the ball. Or better yet run the right route or just RUN THE ROUTE maybe look for the ball idk weird stuff.

So let’s say we block and catch the ball, can someone make a play? Break a tackle? Score a TD? FYI TOs work both ways….I’m asking for too much.

So let’s say we block, catch and make a play what are the chances the play gets called back? Penalty? Reversed? How many times have the refs beat the Bucs?

It’s a lot to overcome. Some might say too much. Penalties, turnovers, missed assignments, execution so on and so fourth. Meh

  11. MadMax Says:

Excuses! Excuses….just leave and take JW#3 with you….fkn losers…gdmn exactly why we cant put a winning team together…WTF????

  12. SteelStudBuc Says:

3 games this season with 4+ turnovers.
7 games in so if that’s a full season were looking at around 25 interceptions. Probably about 20 fumbles. 200 points off turnovers… franchise QB material.

  13. onetrickpony Says:

hey Leftwich, and if elephants had wings they could fly

O line also the D backs maybe the kicking game (Giants). The QB is by far the least of our worries. My god people relax.

  16. Slugglife Says:

    Good one DB55. So true.

And did anybody even understand what BL just said? That’s like political word salad. RB draw on 4th and one with the game on the line, when it calls for a power run.

But yeah 4-5 plays a game. These FN guys always try to overthink everything with their cute play calling. How many red zone fade routes did ME get in the first 6 games? Because he seemed unstoppable last game on fade routes.

Never mind. Throw it to your 3rd string RB on third down. Way to go BL.

  17. Slugglife Says:

There you have it guys. The QB is the least of our worries.

We can all move on to something else. Go Canes!

  18. Bird Says:

Joe I blame you for this garbage

    “He looks fantastic “

Spin it how you want. You look terrible as usual
Logical joe and Ira should put you in timeout 4 good

    Your correct hashtag is #balling4jameisballs

  19. Slugglife Says:

Fumbles and interceptions are not our biggest worry here guys. Turning the ball over in the red zone is no big deal. Turning the ball over in your own red zone is no big deal. Throwing a pick on the first play of the game is no big deal(after deferring to the 2nd half). Nope- no problem there.

Because We have other fish to fry huh?

  20. Bird Says:

The titans were a garbage team that was begging us to beat them
How many chances to win that game

If you thought we would drive down the field and win that game , then you will always be living in fantasy land when it comes to Jameis
    Consistently inconsistent
92 turnovers to 100 tds. That’s no Bueno

  21. Bird Says:

    102 tds ^

  22. Slugglife Says:

One cog in the team. Until they resign him for the lions share of the salary cap, right?

If he’s just one cog, then offer him a 10 million dollar contract. That’s what “cog” players are paid. And they beat less accountability (there’s that word again) for losses. They also touch the ball less and have a extremely lower probability to turn the ball over.

So there you have it guys. JW is just a small cog in a big wheel. I’m guessing that Brady is also just a small cog in this idiots mind. It’s all one big excuse for failure.

    The sheep now see.

  23. Slugglife Says:

    *bear

  24. BigHog Says:

There are some very err umm..NASTY people on this side of the site..I say let “Lefty” learn on the job (which he will starting Sunday) and if you can’t stand it GO live @ MAR A LARGO and root for THE BIG FISH…I here your best friend TRUMP will be joining you soon! What a look white dolphin jersey worn by the Orange Human Scum! Now that’s funny!! Ha ha ha ha ha !!

  25. Defense Rules Says:

Good article Joe. Here’s what Byron’s whole argument is based on … “it’s four or five plays here and there that you’ve just got to really change and really get out of our system just as a team. That comes down to winning the football games.”

Leftwich IMO is half-right & half wrong. He’s correct in that say in the Giants game, had Gay hit that kick or the Bucs scored just 1 TD in the 2nd half, we would’ve won & we’d be 3-4 right now. Had we not gone 5 straight drives in the 2nd half of the Titans game with 2 TOs & 0 Pts (after our initial TD to start the 2nd half) but instead say scored just 1 TD we MIGHT have won that game, and been 4-3 right now. TWO games that were certainly winnable (as was the 2nd Panthers game & maybe even the 49ers game). And yes, if pigs had wings they could fly … maybe.

But the reality IMO is that you win or lose each game ONE PLAY AT A TIME. Each Bucs’ game has so many WASTED PLAYS it’s unbelievable. THAT’S ON COACHING more than anything else far as I’m concerned. Far too many Bucs’ drives end because we wasted a 1st or 2nd down and ended up in 3rd-and-long then couldn’t convert. Well duh. Odds of converting multiple 3rd-and-longs on a drive obviously go down as the number of 3rd-and-longs go up. Bucs have to stop wasting 1st down opportunities. And once we do that, we’ve got to stop wasting 2nd down opportunities. Heck, just count the number of wasted deep balls alone or the number of wasted Barber rushes on 1st down & it becomes obvious how badly we’re wasting opportunities to sustain drives.

This TEAM (and yes Jameis) is being put into some difficult situations by poor play-calling IMO. We’ve made it much easier on the opposing defenses because they know that in certain situations the odds are we’ve do certain things because of the down-and-distance AND because of the talent we have (and don’t have). THAT’S a prescription for failure (and turnovers?) against quality defenses.

Coaching has cost us AT LEAST TWO GAMES IMO. That’s unacceptable. Give this exact same Bucs team to Sean Payton or Andy Reid & we’d be 4-3, 5-2 or maybe even 6-1 right now.

Failed Yucks OC Bryan (WHO ❓) said the same thing when he was the Failed OC of The Arizona Cardinals, And His QB was JOSH ROSEN, another NFL 1st Round BUST (#10 Pick of the 2018 NFL Draft Of The Arizona Cardinals) now cleaning tolets for the Miami Dolphins. Failed Yucks QB Jameis Winston will go down as the biggest NFL QB Flop since Ryan Leaf was taken by the San Diego Chargers with the #2 overall selection in the 1998 NFL Draft.

  28. JJV Says:

Thanks for enlightening us coach. We can now be more understanding and forgiving to our QB. He is not responsible or accountable. The word ” untouchable ” should apply to him also. Now us stupid fans can look elsewhere for excuses. Then we can feel grateful and confident when then eventual franchise QB contract is signed to support his performance. The message you and our leader head coach regarding our QB is loud and clear. Hope the rest of the players still buy into it as the losing continues.

  29. ClodHopper Says:

Jameis is just one cog. Correct.

For example: With our secondary, Russel will score a hundred TDs. That will cause Jameis to quickly get desperate throw high risk high reward throws resulting in a hundred ints.

It’s like you get a bad cut on your arm. Jameis comes along and digs a pen in that cut and moves it around making it grow and get infected. Then some genius comes along and says “Jameis is only part of the problem.”

  30. buc up Says:

Have Jameis roll out more and STOP running up the middle on first down 90% of the time. At least try to confuse the defense occasionally.

  31. down in the dirt doug Says:

Jameis is a below average quarterback that can be above average in some games. In the real world Jameis would have been fired long ago. Some are afraid that he will go on to become great on another team. The bottom line–Jameis has made our team worse–with the help and blessings of management.

  33. Show me the TDs Says:

Comments like this, from the OC, whose QB is playing at a historically suckass level are why this organization will never win. There is no accountability. No toughness. Leftwich is simply covering his own ass. All of the coaches are pointing fingers. What a mess.

  34. Tvan101 Says:

This is your fault, you freaking idiot. He didn’t force your stupid self to watch. He didn’t ask you to neglect your family. Family ALWAYS comes first. If you prioritized a GAME over the lives of the people you are supposed to love, then that’s on you. Whether the team wins or loses should bare little impact on your relationship with your family.

  40. RustyRhinos Says:

Watched the Leftwich presser and heard one of the Joe’s ask if our running up the middle of the Oline on first down 90% of the time is telling the opposition what we will do. Leftwich’s answer was priceless. “Umm, No.”

Great Question Joe! Here is a few other questions to ask Leftwich.

When you were a QB in the NFL and you threw three or four or more interceptions what was your OC’s reaction when asked about his QB’s play that game? Was it all not your fault? Was it just something that you needed to work on? Was there just to much on your plate as the Offensive leader? Whould your OC continue to coddle you right up until the next game, with nearly the same results? Did he? How long do you forsee a OC keeping that verbal Defense up for the starting QB? A month, two, a whole season? Whould you expect that the First pick in the 2015 draft, would still be making bad plays again and again in his fifth season as a starting QB in the NFL? How long did you get to be the starting QB when you had your own on field issues game after game? Issues like not winning, INT’s, fumbles, not knowing the snap count, not knowing on a play you are supposed to have a wr go in motion before the ball is snapped. How long do you think that QB should be the starter?
    GO BUCS!

  41. NPRSageBoy Says:

With 91 TO in five seasons, I think it’s fair to blame JayMiss.

He’ll easily exceed 100 TO before the season is done, so I’ll ask:

Is a QB who AVERAGES 20 Turnovers a season a “Franchise QB”?

    I’ll vote for NOT.

    Peace, out

  42. Kenneth Nance Says:

What if the Bucs were 7-0?

Get your head out of your ass.

  43. TeethingBrat Says:

In my 42 years of watching football, 80% of the time, interceptions have been the quarterbacks fault. Apparently, some mystic and bizarre force has entered our galaxy to change that constant. Apparently, now interceptions thrown by Jameius, are no longer his fault.

  44. Joseph Mamma Says:

We need a link to Ira’s ‘you know it when you see it’ article for every one of these posts about rationalizing winston’s play.

  45. gotbbucs Says:

They’re already setting up a narrative that will enable themselves to explain why they want to either, A) give Winston the $27 million franchise tag, or B) sign him to a 3 year-$70 million contract.
What should have taken four years from start to finish for the team officials to figure out will likely cost the rest of the players on the team seven or eight years and most of their playing careers.
The good teams in the league evaluate players fast and then sh!t or get off the pot. This team continues to throw away years and years and watch coach after coach dating all the way back to his college career try and get this guy to quit giving the ball away, and none of them can stop him. The last regime finally got sick of it and called a spade a spade, and they got fired. This regime is still in the denial phase and wants to blame the rest of the team (as if every other reciever and TE on every other team runs perfect routes and every protection is perfect).
Winston is the poster child for the privileged athlete that sailed his way to the top without ever having to deal with the consequences of poor decision making on and off the field.
All they did when they hired Arians was bring in an enabler that dates all the way back to Winston’s highschool days. He’s been allowed to ignore the word “no” on the sidelines after a dumb throw and he’s been allowed to ignore “no” when he was sexually assaulting women, stealing from grocery stores, shooting BB guns on college campus, and standing on tables and yelling obscenities. There’s a pattern that eventually needs to be broken. Someone needs to finally say, “NO”, you may not collect $100 million for doing whatever the hell you want again.
Anything beyond this year is a waste of time for everybody other than Arians and his army of coaches that “deserve a chance” to get paid for nothing. The rest of us already know how this story will end, in tears and blood shed.

  46. Architek79 Says:

  48. SteveK Says:

Delusional goggles and mental gymnastics to justify QB play is not fun.

We turn the ball over more than ANYONE.

We lose and haven’t been to the playoffs in 12 years.

But, I will hear FSU honks say “but Baker Mayfield sucks too”. Don’t care. If we are on a comparison level with the Browns, then that’s all you need to know.

    No lore excuses.

Dang dude hard to argue with that post. IF all those things you listed were corrected we wouldn’t even need JW. I could play QB for the Bucs if we had all of that going for us. LMAO

We may actually agree but I believe JW COULD QB a winning TEAM….but he’s not going to lead us anywhere. IE I concede that our problems are not just at QB…however if we corrected every problem…unless JW becomes more of a great game manager like Russell Wilson we’d still be in trouble.

BTW Byron…there are plenty of guys here who do not blame JW but blame YOU and I think they have some valid points. IMHO it’s not all JW’s fault for sure…and you Byron are just as responsible as he is for our suckitude.

  51. Dapostman Says:

So this Bucs team could right now be a realistic 4-3 with a PAT length FG and a swallowed whistle and it’s all Winston’s fault they are not according to the WDS simpletons.

The stupidity of the American citizen. Most can’t cover a $400 emergency but they know all of what’s going on in pro football.

  52. Ndog Says:

I love this “weapons” talk. Where are all these weapons everyone keeps talking about. We have Evans, who is up and down with effort and Godwin who before this year was a backup. What else do we have?

We have a highly drafted injury prone underachiever at TE.
We have a undrafted cut twice backup TE.
We have a undrafted starting RB
We have a highly drafted little used backup running back.
We have a #3 WR who everyone agrees sucks
We have a fifth round small school one dimensional 4th WR.
We have a RT who was done two years ago.
We have basically a small school RG that is basically a rookie.

So again where are all these dynamic weapons everyone keeps raving about?

  53. Ndog Says:

Please point out the last time one of these “weapons” broke a tackle and went 50 to the house? Or how about the last time one of these “weapons” caught a screen pass and went to the house? Or how about (gasp) a running back take a handoff and go 60?

Seriously when is the last time any of those things happened?

It is hard for any team to go the length of the field every drive with multiple plays. And yes we get big plays from one place and that is by the ball travelling through the air cause god forbid we ever doing anything crazy like make a guy miss or break a tackle. But yeah let’s put the entire team on the QBs back and blame that one person for the results.

  54. Buc1987 Says:

Ndog is hopelessly devoted (in love) with Jameis Winston.

IT’S BEEN FIVE FREAKING YEARS Ndog.

Wake up and smell the turnovers….

  55. Buc1987 Says:

    Ndog….you’ve used EVERY excuse in the book….so I thought….

Now it’s Winston has no weapons????

    GTFOH with that ish.

  56. Ndog Says:

Again no comment or retort on actually facts that I post just the same mindless crap with zero points. TOs are a result of mistakes but the problem with you is you think only one person makes those mistakes.

  57. I’m a Tandyman used to be Bucs Fan Says:

It’s been 5 years!! How long will people uphold Jay Miss when he keeps doing what he’s done his entire Career!! Start Griffin one game Bucco and just see what happens!!

  58. Buc1987 Says:

Ndog…I’ve got a Bucs Winston jersey and a stitched FSU Winston jersey…

I WAS a HUGE fan of the kid….until 2 weeks ago when he back to back fumbled.

    Enough!!!

He WON’T go to another team and win a Super Bowl…..I was wrong.

I’ll sell ya that Bucs jersey for $20.00. He won’t be here after this season….

  59. Ndog Says:

I don’t buy jerseys as I root for the team and not a player. This is what you people don’t get it is about the team and not a player. You stop believing in him because he fumbled the ball? The first one was him not throwing a pass that was doomed and getting hit in less than a second and the second yes he held it too long but the defense made a great play as he was holding the ball with two hands. But whatever bro you keep blaming the QB when nothing

  60. Ndog Says:

else in this team works. What do you expect one player to do when we have no running game, our WRs run wrong routes, the backs and TE can’t block to save their life and the defense knows what’s coming every play. You can’t compare our QB to any other QB as the circumstances are different. But any QB in this situation and failure is the only result until the TEAM stars playing better and yes that includes the QB at times

  61. Ndog Says:

Again name the last time ANYONE on this team has broken a tackle and gone to the house? Name a time back has broke a long TD run? Our team provides zero support for our QB, please name any other QB that happens to. Maybe Matthew Stafford and guess what the Lions lose too, how can you not see this. Our team is all passing game and if it is not perfect from all aspects we have no chance, NONE!!!

  62. Bird Says:

    Hahahahaha

Ndog. You root for one player you hypocrite
    Get over yourself

You dont make any excuses for other players
    You trash them

You said mike Evans was overrated after having one or two bad games (almost his entire career) The best player on the team by a mile.
You are the worst fan. Act like you are not a homer when you are. And 1987 was a huge Jameis fan for years.

Plus you cried that you were off the site cause of joes article about it may be time to move on. You are a little Girl that hearts his favorite boy band leader singer. It’s so creepy. We were all hoping you would keep to your word.

Do you have a friend who is in a terrible relationship but constantly makes excuses about their significant other’s behavior? This is the Bucs with Jameis Winston.

    28 up 1 down

  66. EA Says:

An incompetent OC is talking about his incompetent QB, who cares…..this team hasn’t bought in yet and buc fans are tired of the same old excuses.

  67. Bucs96 Says:

You see & that’s the issue. No matter if it’s fault or not the narrative is what it is already on Jameis. Perception will become reality eventually.

The only way this is going to go away if the Bucs win win win. Look @ Jimmy G, guy was stinking it up all season before Thursday night & that’s cause he has a top defense & dominating running attack. Still he wasn’t lighting the world on fire & the media wasn’t killing him! You know why?!?!?!? B/c the 49ers are undefeated!

  68. Oneilbucs Says:

NDOG I understand where you are coming from. Because I feel the same way about this team. Jamies has never had a supporting cast. He only had a running game one time since he been on this team and that was his rookie year and we had a 32 ranked defense. I’m ready for next year when every body on this site is going to get what they want. Jamies will be gone and we will still suck. If you can’t run the ball you are going to put your quarterback in a bad position every game. If you’re defense can’t stop anybody you are still going to lose it’s just that simple. I’m just ready for the scapegoat to leave and the next one comes. A quarterback does not win games a team does go ask Rogers the last 2 years they missed the playoffs. This year his team is better and they are wining because of his defense and now they can run the ball. But these people on this site just don’t know nothing about football. So I can’t wait because next year we are going to the super bowl because of our new quarterback that’s all we are missing. Lol lol lol

  69. Bird Says:

    O’Neil

Aaron Rodgers has 25 tds and 2 INTs last year
Has 16 tds and 2 INTs last year

You think If in All those close games last year if Jameis had half the turnovers they might have won some more games
You realize Rodgers had no receivers healthy and is running back was a converted receiver.

Plus , mike Evans and Godwin are the best 1/2 combo In the nfl
Oh Howard and Brate are not garbage yet don’t get the ball
    Blame coaching all you want

And you blame , the black QB argument

I would love russel Wilson , Patrick mahommes and desaum Watson here. Guys that can put a team on their back and win a close game

That’s cool you feel Jameis does that in the fourth quarter against the titans last week. I knew better. 10 turnovers in 2 games not his fault though

Impressive post. While I agree I’m not absolutely certain we’re correct but sadly I believe we are.

What is impressive is your leadership for our posters. If we could get everyone to be as honest as you and put emotion in the back seat we’d get better posts from everyone.

I never mind admitting I’m wrong…had plenty of practice. LMAO

Well I do mind admitting I’m wrong about my belief in the Bucs this year…not because it damaged my “posting reputation” but because it means yeah the Bucs suck again.

Bird you still don’t get it. Look at the 49ers. Jimmy G had 1 good game and they still won every bad game he has had . When you have a good defense and at least a ok running game that’s how young quarterbacks develop. Because they know that they don’t have to win games on their own. Jamies came to a bad situation. The GM did a bad job building this team. What helped Payton Manning is his GM was Bill Polian who built the Buffalo Bills in the early 90s. When we bring in another quarterback it’s going to be the same thing. Jamies came in and they said go win a championship it’s all on you . The defense was trash and still is trash. The running game had been trash. And now we have a coach who still don’t believe in running the ball . BA is to old to be coaching now . But don’t worry Jamies will be gone and when he is I’m not going to give the next quarterback no excuse for not being able to win . And I want you to be the same way you are with Jamies be the that way with the next quarterback. It doesn’t matter if his defense can’t stop anybody. It doesn’t matter how bad the blocking is or how bad the running game is. It’s all on him so every lost will be because of him . And I will be still rooting for him and my bucs to win . It’s not about Jamies with me . I just know what’s going to happen. We draft a quarterback and then we will miss out another Aron Donald or a Von Miller or a Lattlemore type of player that can come in and make a early impact on the team even if the bucs defense is not that good. Watch in see it happens every year.

I guess the turnovers didn’t contribute us being 2-5

All of these people that stick up for Jameis. I’ve had it with turnovers, haven’t you? We’ll never win this way. Nobody wins this way. Forger it. Look at each position on this team. We have a lot of good talent. No one in this league wins with TURNOVERS!
