Jason Licht: “Too Bad He Doesn’t Get The Recognition He Deserves”

November 18th, 2019

General manager Jason Licht is very proud.

No, he’s not proud about the Bucs’ abysmal 3-7 record or the 14-31 tear they are on since the glorious five-game winning streak of 2016.

But Licht is beaming when it comes to his hulking young defensive tackle, Vita Vea.

The second-year manbeast has half a sack this season, plus one tackle for loss, along with seven quarterback hits and 14 solo tackles. While his production is on pace for about what Chris “Swaggy” Baker delivered here, Vea’s athleticism, brute strength, motor and frequent disruption let everyone know he’s no Swaggy 2.0.

And Bucs fans saw Vea deliver on offense two games ago, which garnered national attention for the fun of it all — in addition to Vea’s punishing blocking.

“I’m just happy he got some recognition. It’s too bad he doesn’t get the recognition he deserves as a defensive tackle,” Licht said on the Buccaneers Radio Network yesterday. ” … Too bad it took a run on offense.”

Joe heard that and did a head-shake. It’s one thing for fans to say that, but Licht is a guy with real power to get a guy national recognition. So Licht lamenting public perception of a player is a little odd.

Joe suspects Licht feels other Bucs are underappreciated on the national landscape. Will he do do anything this week to right those wrongs?

It’s because he’s on an awful team that was put together by you (Licht). Nobody cares about good players on 3 win teams and they never will.

  2. TheBucsAnthem Says:

This guy should’ve never been given a new contract

  3. Etzel Says:

“Too bad he doesn’t get any recognition playing around undrafted free agents and overpaid veterans on a team with zero heart and soul. So unfortunate that happened to him” – Licht

  4. Aceofaerospace Says:

My bad. By the headline I just assumed he was talking about Jameis.

  5. james west Says:

it’s a dumpster fire put it out

  6. Mikadeemas Says:

Ha! Your typo is priceless!! Do Do is absolutely correct, sir!

  7. BrianBucs Says:

Licht has to draw some attention to one of his good picks to try to draw attention away from his too many bad ones.
Either directly or indirectly this entire dumpster fire is Licht’s responsibility

    perfect

  9. Troy Says:

This team does get national attention – as one of the worst teams in the NFL. Most of that is due to this GM.

  10. The Buc Realist Says:

Who in the hell is listening to licht weight?????? The local media and sheep should be embarrassed for biting hook, line, and sinker for the BS excuses, and all the wrongful blaming that this joke of gm tried to place on others!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The local media and sheep are getting exactly the team they deserve!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 revealed answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already knew!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Etzel Says:

@Brian agree. The timing of this seems a bit too close to Hargreaves getting cut…. “How about that Vita Vea, guys! He’s one of the good ones, right??”

  12. ElioT Says:

Licht should take a jump into his pool with some heavy patio stones tied to his feet.

Imagine if Vea had a couple other young studs at DT and DE playing next to him?

Instead we’ve got 19 DBs with question marks all over them.

  13. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Oh..think he does…he’ll get plenty of props from the OLmen he plays against….he nearly had Brees yesterday ! and he was truck’n full speed right at him

  14. Bobby M. Says:

We’re a small market team that has sucked for a decade….or more. Lavonte David is by far the most underrated player in possibly the whole league. Maybe Licht should help the guys out by putting actual talent on the field that can produce a winner….with winning comes recognition. That’s how all this works. Unfortunately the spotlight is on our head coaches interviews and our QBs screw ups. That’s the highlight of our Bucs right now…..how we lost and how we react to losing.

  15. Larry Says:

When will Arians STOP making excuses for Winston??? It use to be that he was to young and didn’t have enough experience. Now the excuse is it’s that “only 10 out of 18 turnovers that were his fault”. Give me a break!! As Forrest Gump famously once said, “Winston is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you will get. 1 turn over or 4 turn overs, you just know you will get them.” If he gets paid franchise money next year it will be a joke. He is NOT worth 25+ plus million dollars a year!

  16. D-Rome Says:

Vita Vea is one of the few decisions Backstabbin’ Jason Licht has gotten right during his reign of terror.

  17. Troy Says:

Notice how this is what Licht wants to talk about – Vea. He doesn’t want to talk about the numerous mistakes he’s made during his tenure as GM. It’s all about diversion from reality. The press should start hammering this guy over the fact that his drafts have been crap, his coaches are a joke, and his free agent signings have been absolute bombs. This is LICHT’S TEAM. He is responsible for it. The media should hold him responsible.

Yeah! He ghost wrote a disjointed 400 page tome blasting fans for not realizing that Jameis is a young hall-of-famer. LOL

  19. Adrnagy Says:

Licht is happy because one of is many draft finally is playing good.

  20. 813bucboi Says:

ask licht to talk about all his other 1st round picks….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  21. Tbbucs3 Says:

    D-Rome

Where was Vita on Sunday? Was he able to stop the pass?

Keep saying he got this pick right but secondary issues continue to plague this team.

    Derwin James> Run Stuffer

  22. Tbbucs3 Says:

And Jason Licht steps up to the plate…….pitcher throws a 1st round pick right down the middle annnnnd another swing and a miss by the longtime Buccaneers GM Jason Licht!

  23. WyldKat Says:

Sure the dumpster is on fire, but look at how great the concrete pad is holding up.

  24. Jean Lafitte Says:

Maybe he’ll open another burner account and call himself Vea 1 of 1

  25. Tbbucs3 Says:

Joe, you should use Vitas real name next time……….

Tevita Tuliʻakiʻono Tuipulotu Mosese Vaʻhae Fehoko Faletau Vea

  26. TOM Says:

Everybody knows that loser Licht sucks. Worst GM the Bucs have ever had. And thats sayin alot.

  27. D-Rome Says:

    D-Rome

Where was Vita on Sunday? Was he able to stop the pass?

Keep saying he got this pick right but secondary issues continue to plague this team.

The Buccaneers could not allow the defensive line to get older by drafting yet *another* player in the secondary. Besides, how are the Chargers doing this year with Derwin James? Not very well last time I checked. Derwin James would likely not have made a difference here. He would have been sucked into this “miscommunication” vortex that seems to plague all Bucs players in the secondary.

  28. Buccfan37 Says:

Licht gets the deserved heat because he built this bunch of losers. Some nerve acting like he should be held in high esteem. YOU’RE FIRED!

  29. Defense Rules Says:

It’s hard for Bucs’ players to get national recognition when Gump is getting all the recognition … for all his faux pas. IF the Bucs were competitive in the NFC South, a number of our players would be getting recognition.

  30. Jameis Almighty! Says:

Licht is a baffoon! He needs to shut his mouth. Jameis and Byron sandwich are doing their best to get Licht fired. Good on you jAmeis and sand which.

  31. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

Ol’ Licht Weight lamenting under the guise of “my draft pick was/is great”! Vea has indeed come on…too bad he blew the additional 2nd round pick he picked up on secondary garbage.

  32. unbelievable Says:

What exactly could Licht do this week to right those wrongs?

Go back in time and not draft a ton of duds over the last few years?

Go back in time and sign some veteran FAs we so desperately needed on defense?

Go back in time and assemble a better o-line? Maybe not pay D. Smith 10s of millions of dollars to get his QB killed every week?

Hmm, don’t think any of those things are going to happen this week.

  33. Sharthappens Says:

Recognition is a two way street. The Bucs get plenty of BAD recognition

  34. 2020 What is the bucs future plan? Says:

jason licked should be fired….. losing 66% of the time under his tenure…..dont change anything……. the glass is half full or empty or something like that ….. Its
    all GOOD !!!

  35. Miller5252 Says:

Watching the game yesterday the announcer said some linebacker on the Saints is the most underrated LB in the league….. took all of 2 seconds for both me and my son at the same tome to say BS and name LVD.

This week was the first time I heard Evens name on the ESPN NFL morning show. Moss brought him up….. last few weeks I have been watching and nothing said of him and Godwin. Moss gave him some love and even picked the Bucs yesterday, bout fell over. Only reason they got talked about was because they played the Saints!

They didn’t talk about Vea as a monster defender…. they liked how he blocked…. pretty sad to say the least and he’s mad about it. How bout getting a team to 10 wins first. I’ll even take 9 wins and maybe have some hope.

  36. 2020 What is the bucs future plan? Says:

….. its quite embarrassing watching when we play the Saints extemely well coached team ….. The Glazers have been Bamboozeled again ….. I am hoping The GLAZERS WAKE THE F*@%*CK UP ! CLEAN HOUSE TOP TO BOTTOM ……. STARTING WITH JASON LICKED 33%WINNING RECORD UNDER HIS TENURE ………. the sesaon is over we have 1% chance of making the playoffs we cant resign Jaymiss Winsnot….he is worth 8-10 million ayear period as a back up !!! We should bench Jaymiss develope all young talent and play for the draft.

  37. stpetebucsfan Says:

This is too easy….there are three ways to get recognition in the NFL. 1.) Win baby…winning takes care of EVERYTHING
2.) Be in a major market..we are not even in top ten.
3.) Sometimes…sometimes..a player can be so
outstanding that he’s just unavoidable. Shaq Barrett
this year at least the first half. He’s disappearing fast.

  38. Buc1987 Says:

    Who’s worse?

    Dom or Licht?

  39. The Buc Realist Says:

    @1987

That depends, Dom was way worse in the draft, so bad, that even he could not protect and overpay his draft picks the wasy licht weight does, leading to salary cap hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The biggest weakness of both is taking just a good player and building a team around them and then claim they are leaders!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The “real” question is who’s worse at player evaluation????

Talk show Dom or Licht weight, or Local media?????????????

  40. down in the dirt doug Says:

When you ask which of the two gm’s is worse –you may as well be asking who is better–Stalin–or Hitler!!!!!!!!!

  41. jjbucfan Says:

D-Rome, D James went out for the year in like the second or third game. Chargers d sucks this year, THAT is how good he is. However, Vea is doing just fine and will only get better. Anyone else think Such has checked out since we are so bad? Human nature.

  42. Anonymous Says:

Thet DT ain’t nobody and deserves no attention! The one who does is evens

  43. BuccoBrucey Says:

worst gm in football. And that’s saying something
