Official Buccaneers Analyst Questions Playcalling

November 17th, 2019

Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich

For a moment, try to forget the Bucs calling Dare Ogunbowale’s number twice in a row on the goal line late in the game.

This post is about the bigger playcalling picture.

America’s Quarteraback, Jameis Winston, was blitzed a lot today and he absorbed a dozen hits and wasn’t too successful against those blitzes.

Former Bucs tight end Dave Moore, the Xs and Os guru of the Buccaneers Radio Network, sound frustrated a bit after the game talking about the Bucs’ playcalling decisions in the face of all those blitzes.

Moore would have liked to see wide receiver screens and swing passes and quick flares called to counter the blitz. “The Bucs just tried to protect it up rather than use [the blitz] to their advantage,” Moore said, adding that those screens and flares would have helped keep hits off Jameis and provide more manageable down and distances.

Later, Moore said he saw limited separation from Bucs receivers, so that certainly didn’t help the Bucs offense.

Joe was wondering where the easy slants were to Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, as well as those wide receiver screens, which represent easy yards and give the defenses more to think about.

The talent dictates the play calling….

  2. Tampabuscsbro Says:

It’s almost as though our assistant QB coaching intern shouldn’t be calling plays and running the offense. really makes one ponder.

  3. Hodad Says:

Keep wondering Joe, we all are. That’s our Bucs.

  4. Wesley Says:

    This coaching staff is trash.

  5. Jean Lafitte Says:

that’s it …it’s because of officiating Jameis threw 3 INT’s

  6. 813bucboi Says:

    Can’t blame BL…

Bill Walsh couldn’t stop JW and his TOs…

    GO BUCS

  7. Buddy Says:

The true FRAUD that is Bucco Bruce is starting to show now cussing in press conferences and now not acting so tough towards the officials. Last week he was me Big Guy cause he threw a flag. Now he don’t talk about officiating. He’s a joke. Just padding his pension. We could only hope he pulls up lame again and retires.

  8. Pewter power Says:

This team is going to look so different next year. No way leftwich is that dumb he didnt know screens would ease the pass rush or that BA would even allow him to call that type of game unchecked. These coaches playing for a top draft pick on the low, theres just no way you call all the screens you did last week and choose not to call them with rojo and instead use slow arse dare. They are tanking hard!!!!

  9. Kobe Faker Says:

“Bryon Leftwich is head coaching material

I dont care if we never win another game

    I am never wrong”

    Bruce Almighty

  10. BucsBandit Says:

    WHATEVER YOU DO…

    WHATEVER IT TAKES…

    NO MATTER WHAT…

    NEVER…

    I MEAN, NEVER…

    #BLAMEJAMEIS

    NOTHING IS HIS FAULT. EVER.

  11. Vincente Says:

Just coming through on my weekly “the Bucs suck and I know they will lose today” post and…..yup they did. Why am I a fan of this team? It’s almost been almost twenty years since they were watchable. New head coach every two years, new QB same results. Things are never going to change. Oh well, go Bucs….

  12. ElioT Says:

    51 pass attempts

    8 rush attempts
    – 4 for Rojo
    – 0 for Barber
    – 2 for Winston
    – 2 for #44

You can’t win with that s**t!

  13. JimmyJack Says:

It was a awful game plan and it looked like the Saints did nothing different then the last time they clobbered us. The game planning was pathetic and it was shameful. And I am one of the staunch defenders of this staff………But it will not go blind to the awful team they had today was was totally underprepared.

  14. Jean Lafitte Says:

deer in the headlight ..we need a true general who can slide

  15. Pete I Says:

Was it 8 rushing plays today?

    A franchise low!

Why does anyone think that Bruce ” Lack of preparation – H didn’t really miss coaching but why not ” Arians would actually be better at play calling?

Hmmmm, well I suppose he couldn’t be worse. Maybe his golf cart can call plays?

  16. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

Offense was horrible today. Everything from the game planning, play calling, protection, adjustments, execution, was absolutely terrible. Anytime your Quarterback has 50+ pass attempts in a game, especially with a QB prone to turnovers like Jameis, there’s obviously gonna be INTs thrown. Really disappointed in BL today, this was one of his worst showings so far.

  17. BucsLyfe79 Says:

Dave Moore shouldn’t be surprised with the playcalling when Bubba Gump Jr is calling the shots.

  18. Bird Says:

    Yah

    Our receivers suck

    😂

  19. Jean Lafitte Says:

    Saints swept us …waah

  20. JimmyJack Says:

And why the EFFF can’t we still run a dam screen properly? WTF coaching what is the freaking hold up. It’s a big part of every game plan yet half the time it resembles a firdrill or peewee football.

What are you MFs doing all week and why is it going unaddressed? Y’all are sucking at your jobs and it’s on full display every Sunday. I’m doing my job 7 days a week. Y’all do yours.

  21. JimmyJack Says:

    Getting fed up

  22. Frank Pillow Says:

Marcus Arroyo > Byron Leftwich. It’s that bad, folks.

  23. Bosch Says:

    Leftwich in not OC material.

  24. BrianBucs Says:

The Bucs have the league’s largest coaching staff and never look properly prepared or ready to play.

  25. Bird Says:

A losing culture never starts with the quartback

    You all are funny
#3 is part of this crap

  26. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

We have been questioning the playcalling since week 1, and it has not shown any improvement. BA clearly has no interest in coaching this team, he is delegating to bad coaches. BLOW. IT. UP.

  27. JimmyJack Says:

Bunch of Awholes gonna run RoJo four times…….Hey dumbasses……Your QB is throwing with his left hand multiple times and was hobbling off the field today.

WTF was that? Are y’all even aware of how we are getting beat? Get your spit together

  28. Bird Says:

    Jameis press conference

“Im gonna just try and get better every day ?

  29. Miller5252 Says:

Looked the same the last rime we played the saints…… nothing changed! Same crap game plan! Saints didn’t even have to try today on both sides easy W for them. Sick of watching this garbage!!

  30. gotbbucs Says:

Told everyone before they even hired Arians to be careful what they wish for. Arians offense, which make no mistake, Leftwich is running, gets QBs killed. It’s a vertical offense that takes forever to develop.

It was exactly the wrong offense to let Winston run, because the longer and more the ball is in Winston’s hands, the worse things can get.

The Oline isnt great, but everybody and their dig knows that. So shorten up the pass game. These guys are to damn stubborn to adjust their scheme….remind you of anyone?

If Greg Schiano would have had enough street credibility to get himself a legit Offensive Coordinator, he was the best coach this team has had since Chucky got fired.

  31. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

falcons coming in hot for the toilet bowl

  32. Jean Lafitte Says:

And why the EFFF can’t we still run a dam screen properly?

Worse than Clyde Christianson Worse than Jeff “Dead” Tedford.
    Worse than @Unbelievable’s Wife’s P u $ $ y smell

  34. THETRUTH Says:

EVERYTIME they have a big play to get to the 1 yard line they rush to have a quick snap and NOT ONCE HAS IT WORKED , instead we have had penalties , fumbles or loss for yards. STOP DOING THIS !!!!

  35. Jean Lafitte Says:

And why the EFFF can’t we still run a dam screen properly?
    ______________________________________

because Jameis turns his back on the defensive rush like it’s play action pass and loses sight of his receiver while the defender is almost on top him getting the ball out late.

  36. MadMax Says:

Left “which way” def needs to go!!! Why BA is so enamored with him questions the whole reason BA is even here to begin with. Nothing special there so move on and find A REAL OC!

  37. Jameishas2go Says:

If Joe was this critical of Jameis Winston this quickly, he would have been run out of town by now.

Byron Leftwich is in his FIRST YEAR as OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR from the start of the season. With a mediocre offensive line, average running game and inconsistent QB play, he has this offense averaging almost 30 points a game.

He is also calling Bruce Arians offense, not his offense.

Sean Payton first three seasons as Offensive Coordinator
    NY Giants 20.5 ppg 15.5ppg 2000
    NY Giants 18.4 ppg 20.1ppg 2001
    NY Giants 20.0 ppg 17.4ppg 2002

    Byron Leftwich first season
Tampa Bay 27.7 ppg 31.3ppg Thru 10 games

    Notice the difference.

Stop with the criticism of the coaching of Byron Leftwich. This is getting ridiculous. He has less experience as offensive coordinator then Sean Payton had and yet he is producing considerable more with no help from our defense.

  38. Jean Lafitte Says:

Brees ran 4 successful screens and never turned his back to the defense

  39. Zwak Says:

    Hire more coaches?

Props to Ryan Griffin the guys going to retire from the NFL without ever playing in a real game.

  40. Ricordo Says:

Looking at the bright side, the stadium was half full.

    It could’ve been half empty…

Dayum! That was painful to watch…

  41. Jameishas2go Says:

If you think Marcus Arroyo is a better playcaller than Leftwich, you are not to be taken seriously with your comments.

  42. Troy Says:

Funny how the QUARTERBACK throwing 4 picks is now on the offensive coordinator, who coordinates the 3rd highest scoring offense in the league. Joe is the president of JEM (Jay-Miss Excuse Machine).

  43. Buccfan37 Says:

A respectable Bucs showing up was too much to ask for. Reality showed up today.

  44. 813bucboi Says:

Folks are running out of scapegoats….lol…

    GO BUCS

  45. unbelievable Says:

    Yup.

That’s the same exact thing I was calling for all week long.

BL calls plays just the way he played QB- too slow and late.

  46. unbelievable Says:

Jameis also looked rattled all game, just like last time against the Saints.

You see all those wobbly passes he was throwing today? What happened to a nice tight spiral?

We just have no consistency from any unit- QB, WR, OL, RB, TE

It’s laughable. Somehow Licht gets an extension.

  47. Colorado Says:

The offensive playcalling was absolutely terrible. Every third down the Saints came with a blitz and of course all the routes were long developing…

Cam Jordan is on Donovan Smith. That’s a major mismatch, to say the least. Call some damn shorter routes.

  48. CalBucsFan Says:

Show some balls Licht, fire Leftwichway.

  49. rrsrq Says:

At 20-7 halftime, getting the ball to start the second half, the coaches said to hell with the running game, you are only two scores down. You should study your own film, the more you throw, the better the chances of something bad happening. What happened, all of a sudden ROJO can’t run or catch. All of a sudden – how can a team stack wins when the OC can’t stack a couple of good play calls, why just leave JW in the pocket, why no receiver screens, no slants to Scotty who finally got on a roll. It seems our only receiver that can close, actually run into the end zone is Chris Godwin. If Evans gets in, that’s one less pick and two less Dare runs

  50. Aceofaerospace Says:

Why is Bruce Arians even here? Call the plays or retire again.

  51. orlbucfan Says:

Quit blaming Leftwich for this loss. Blame Bruce A(ss)rians. ME13 caught how many passes today?? 1?? 2 mebbe?? At least, now best we can hope for is 8-8 and no thanks to Ahole Arians.

  52. Anthony Says:

Winston is over rated. Bring Fitz back so we can at least have fun. Boyles needs to go as well. I haven’t seen a defense like this since the Wyche era

  53. Defense Rules Says:

I agree with orlbucfan … blame BA. Allowing BL to screw up game-planning and play-calling as badly as he has is on the HC. The offensive preparation for this game was abysmal, and that’s on the HC too. BA the Delegator-In-Charge isn’t working, and it hasn’t been working all season.

Like the Marines say … ‘Lead, follow, or get the he11 out of the way’.

  54. Nick2 Says:

First play ROJO for 6 yards. Woooahhhhh hold on lets not get rushing yards that’s too many. Instead lets have the least amount of rushing attempts in franchise history because we just got 6 yards. The Glazers need to march into Arians office and demand an end to Arians-lite. We need Arians full bore or not at all. This offense right now might score points but has some terrible play calling. Such as 4th and 1 and neither Barber or Rojo get a chance to touch the ball?????????? Please
