Real Talk From Arians

October 28th, 2019

Worried about his job?

It was almost like Bucco Bruce Arians either had an arse-chewing from Team Glazer or he sees the handwriting on the wall if he can’t shake his team out of its current funk.

Arians, in his day-after presser today, mentioned how much different things would be if the Bucs had that touchdown that was waved off when Andrew Adams housed a fumble yesterday late in the game that would have given the Bucs the lead with under four minutes left.

It was as if Arians publicly admitted that call, which led to another Bucs loss, has changed the focus of the Bucs future from the perspective of Team Glazer.

Arians seemed to admit he’s wondering now about his job security, and that of everyone else from Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht on down now that the Bucs are realistically out of any playoff hopes. Again.

“An inadvertent whistle,” Arians said. “If we have those last three minutes and change with a three-point lead, and win the game, I think people are writing different stories and talking different things.”

Arians is absolutely correct. No one would be talking doom and gloom today. No one would be talking about the draft. Few would be talking about who the Bucs should sell off at the trade deadline for future draft picks.

Instead, the chatter would be how the resilient Bucs fought back from a horrible start to beat a decent team on the road and showed heart and hustle and fight and character.

Instead, lots of Bucs fans today are talking about how Team Glazer should have a housecleaning. And Arians all but acknowledged that in his presser.

“It was more than just a play,” Arians said of the waved off scoop-and-score. “My biggest thing is, referees are not held accountable. Coaches get fired. General managers get fired. Players get cut. Referees are not held accountable. And it is a shame.”

Is Arians now looking over his shoulder at Black Monday, roughly two months away? Did Licht say something to Arians on the plane ride home that Team Glazer is fed up? Have Licht and Arians been tipped off that ownership has had a change of heart with their vision of the team?

Yesterday after the game, Arians said he had no interest in trading players to build for the future because he was all about winning now and that next year is not guaranteed. Today, he said if the price is right, he’s open to trading players (he has mentioned that before as well).

Joe thought it was awfully interesting that in his opening remarks in today’s press conference, Arians mentioned coaches and general managers can get fired after a season-changing loss.

This guy is a fraud. He came here and doesn’t coach anything. He coaches the coaches. He rides around on a little golf cart acting all high and mighty. Worrying about wearing a dumba$$ Kangol and trying to be “cool and hip”. How’d that workout for Joe Maddon and his glasses. Grandpa Bucco Bruce’s true colors are showing now. The game has passed him by . We have retread coaches from Jets losing team and AZ losing team. BA has never won anything as a HC.

  2. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Even if they won the game, the bucs are still a very bad football team overall that got torched by Ryan Tanneyhill, who will be a backup for the rest of his career. Find out what the seahawks passing records are because they may fall next weekend. This is setting up to be that yearly bucs blowout

  3. Mike in MO Says:

I give Buddy two thumbs up. Well said.

  4. Jmarkbuc Says:

    BA is an excuse factory…

Mr. Accountability says anything and everything but the truth.

He got here because Gump told him “ look if you come here, I can save my neck and you can earn some vacation money” BA says “ can I bring all my people with me and get them paid too.” “ Sure, anything that keeps me in a job”

  5. tmaxcon Says:

BA and his BS did not last long… home boy is setting up for an early exit just like I predicted…. lot of butt hurt optimists out there pissed off how accurate I am year in and year out pertaining to this circus we love.

  6. Ken G Says:

Arians sideline tactics are terrible. This was a money grab from the get go; largest coaching staff in the NFL filled with Bruce’s cronies. That is the most disappointing thing about 2019 — the Glazers got fooled again by a fast-talking salesman (he is Jon Gruden with less coaching chops).

The culture must be changed. Need to start at GM and move from there. Clearly Winston won’t be here (as soon as his contract expires Week 17, he’ll have a baseball contract working — you can see it by the Winston baseball story planted in the Athletic this am). Good thing about the NFL — you can turn it around quickly once you get the culture right.

Ronde Barber as GM…I am serious…he can find a bean counter for the cap side…

  8. Orlando Kevin Says:

Part of what makes the Bucs, like the Browns, dysfunctional is that what legitimate coaching team and GM wants to work for the Bucs? If you are a top coach, would you come here? Just like we were left at the alter twice by Parcels and players like Bo Jackson, the Bucs have to rethink a long term is plan that makes this is top team to be on. Short term thinking just doesn’t work.

Some teams keep finding QB’s one after the other…. Packers, Eagles, Cowboys, Colts, Steelers. And some teams can make backups look like stars.

What makes a team have that IT factor? And why can’t the Bucs figure it out?

  9. Proudbucsfan Says:

In my opinion we need to get rid of the laid back lazy players and coaches that don’t have any sense of urgency to get things right in practice and preparation. Even if you just have one of those guys it’s infectious.

  10. Tbbucs3 Says:

Wow lay off Bruce Arians folks, he’s not the problem.

    Jason Licht is the problem

What is Bruce Arians and Todd Bowels supposed to do with Jason Licht’s handpicked players?

  11. Buccfan37 Says:

Still fuming about that fumble return caused by the White ferocious hit to take the lead erased by a “referee” in which whose call was highly suspicious. The final dagger in the Bucs win chance as it proved to be. How that call was not reviewable makes no sense.

stop living in a failed past fool… barber is one of the dumbest dudes on tv and you want him for gm…… bucs need to bring in a football guy not some failure has been from the past…. barber and the other fool 55 never won a damn thing unless they were on sapps coattails….

He was happy to get any HC job, came in here and he and McKay turned this thing around..so with the right people it can be done.

Look at John Lynch, absolutely NO front office experience, comes out of the broadcast booth and turns around a dreadful SF team in three years.

Wow lay off Bruce Arians folks, he’s not the problem.

clearly you are not watching. BA looks just as lost on the sideline as the midget corner back vh3bust chasing receivers and the latest bust white looking like he belongs in neverland chasing Tinkerbell.

  15. Grt1 Says:

Arians talk ain’t excuse talk it’s real talk. Most of you posters don’t know squat about football. Next time a ref messes up, put him on a jumbo tron so everyone can know who fudged it up. They have one job , but yet they find ways to mess up. So what happened to the league memo that they told the refs to let it play out after that saints and ram game. Did this dude not get it or did he not care.

Tom Moore probably never used a cellphone and he is going to coach him using the tablet computer?

Get these old timers out of football

  24. Jeffbuc Says:

It’s not fun anymore. Just so over it. To devote so much time and money and arguing with the wife to not miss a game. All for it to be the same exact season same exact problems same exact draft talk in October. I just do t get it how every new coach nothing changes. Other teams hire new coaches and they instantly make them better. Jason licht has to be fired he is the guy that drafted all these players. Always trying to be to cute and take the small school guy over the proven power 5 conference player. Or the guy who didn’t do much in college but has potential. We aren’t the patriots we can’t afford to draft potential guys we have to draft difference makers. Which shouldn’t be to hard to draft players to beat out who we have. The number 5 overall pick looks like a undrafted free agent rookie. Forgot he was on the team until I saw him make a tackle in the 3rd quarter. Jameis Winston throws two picks and had two more that should have been. It’s a joke where is this accountability perriman should have been released today. I know he is failing every accountability test I have seen. But he has the the thing that licht loves potential to one day out it all together.

  25. tmaxcon Says:

low standard bucfan is so predictable with the bring back failed dungy the clown crap… dungy sucked he set this team back and wasted 6 years of sapps career those are undisputed facts… you fools non stop attempts at rewriting history is so pathetic….. dungy failed once might as well bring him back to fail again…. remember father first!!!!!!

  26. Petty Officer Buc Says:

Can Arians be consistent within even 24 hours? Is that too much to ask? Never mind all the offseason hype and soundbites and quips.

  27. zzbuc Says:

We got to a point where something has to change, Owners? GM? Coaches? QB? Maybe all of them, or maybe some of them….But our beloved Bucs are something really close to a joke, and a really nasty one……..
This is coming season after season,. and nothing seems to change……

  28. Petty Officer Buc Says:

Why does anyone even want this team to make the playoffs this year? Does this look like a team that can survive the NFC Wildcard weekends or divisional matchups? Don’t give me that “Any given Sunday” crap.

It’s a rebuild and the sooner everyone realizes that, the better.

  29. Jeffbuc Says:

Fire licht or you will lose slowly fading fan base you do have. The die hard slime all of us are on this site not it is Jason who is in charge of this lack of talent. We have no cap room and are 2-5 he has to go. I would fire him today if I was an owner. You can’t hire someone worse. He is as bad as a gm can be. Drafting free agents money management not trading players when they have value. Could have traded Kwon McCoy Jackson and Brate last year when they had value. But nope let them walk. Try to trade them in the off-season when every team knows you are fixing to release them or not resign them. Patriots want Howard nope he might be a good player for us in his contract year then we will let him walk

Cool hand Luke – What we have here is a failure to win a football game…

  32. gotbbucs Says:

Can’t figure out why this team can’t get any calls to go their way?

It’s just wierd. It’s almost like the referees are tired of getting bitched at by an old man on the sideline and being called out publicly after every game.

The refs in the NFL right now are being asked to do an impossible job. They NFL suits took a gladiator sport and are trying to turn it into a noncontact sport and asking the refs to do the dirty work. Then they gave these coaches the option to challenge more calls that the head of officials usnt going to overturn. Belichick learned after the preseason that challenging PI calls won’t work in his favor so he doesnt do it. Arians thinks if he screams and cries enough he’ll get his way. Not gonna happen.

  33. Jmarkbuc Says:

The trade deadline is completely a moot point.

If we did have a fire sale and collected 100 draft picks, Gump is still the GM.

  34. Petty Officer Buc Says:

At this point bring back Raheem Morris I’m dead serious. It was disrespectful to him how Dom and the Glazers never opened the checkbook for Free Agents under Rah and then Schianos first year they spend like a drunken sailor in Manila.

  48. Sharthappens Says:

JW also has 14 TD passes and 15 total turnovers. 12 picks and 3 lost fumbles. He has fumbled 8 times. He has another 9-10 passes that should have been picked off but there is a reason some guys play defense…they cannot catch. He is 2-5 this year. Four of the loses are 100% due to his poor play!

  49. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I believe Arians’ support of Leftwich will eventually be his downfall….

  50. orlbucfan Says:

Tampax.con is too big of a chicken to go to another site and bloviate like it does here. Shows its stupidity, too. BA is the reason why Bucs lost yesterday. There are a lot of good players on this team who had to fly back from Nashville po’ed off and embarrassed. BA better get his head on straight before next Sunday. BTW, who was the ‘genius’ who dreamed up this schedule for the Bucs? It’s been beyond ridiculous. Bucs Nation has a good thread going about the fans’ evaluation of whether Bucs fans are especially toxic compared to those of the other clubs? I know there are plenty of dimwitted trolls on here, that’s for sure!

When the Bucs end up 6-10 (or worse) I will not blame Arians. He was brought into an impossible situation with an inept ownership group and a roster filled with players that have no business playing in the NFL. A roster put together by a GM that should have been fired a few years ago. I don’t think Arians ever expected coming into a situation where so many players think that winning isn’t very important.

  58. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

4-5 wins is a real possibility

Arians is realizing he’s trusting the wrong people (Licht and Leftwich) his loyalty to his friends will ruin his rep and continue this losing culture

Yeah somehow every coach we ever hire is a scam. Go figure.

  64. Jean Lafitte Says:

If I were BA and since we have nothing to lose now, I would seriously think of benching Jameis and play Griffin in Seattle. If we beat Seattle with Griffin, he maybe able to sort of save the season but with the turnover prone Jameis we seem to have no chance and we just keep clicking our heels.

  65. Petty Officer Buc Says:

Raheem wasn’t a scam, he was just too young and buddy buddy with the players and had a cheap ass owner and GM.

Schiano wasn’t a scam he just had a Freeman meltdown and MRSA infection of all things.

Both were honest and genuine and accountable, something I wish I could say for the current staff.

  66. Petty Officer Buc Says:

Agree on Wyche, and McKay gets some credit with Wyche too, wasn’t he the interim GM at the time?, and don’t forget Floyd Peters..our great D’s Really were to his credit.

Tony was hired to be the coach and he DID take what was here and improve on it and make it great. Everybody defends Gruden, but blames TD for taking what was here and winning with it.

Wyche/ McKay got some players here, but Wyche didn’t win with them.

  69. ancientasbuc Says:

That’s whole lot of over-reading into some very obvious comments from the losing coach in a one possession game. This is silly talk. None of this matters 7 games in the season and will only be relevant after game 16. I think Arians is right, anything goes if this crap continues. Another thing to chew for all of the hand wringers is that coaches coach and players play. Lovie, nor Dirk, nor BA plays a down. Professional sports are players leagues, some coaches are better than others certainly. Some are really bad. What they are bad at is not X’s and O’s. It’s communicating the right things to do in the right way. A player has to capable of doing it. So far, I keep coming back to Licht and his staff.

  70. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Remember: He (Dungy) absolutely begged the Bucs to draft that gimmick freak Marcus Mariota”. Uhhh, and you Joe begged folks to draft Johnny Manziel. But hey, we won’t bring that up since you didn’t.

At Noles: you will never be taken seriously with a handle like that. Your just another Free Snowcrab University drop out that supports the anointed ignorant one. The same guy that attended ZERO classes while in college.

  75. Allbuccedup Says:

He better be busy today and tomorrow at the very least trade to get a couple of more draft picks for 2020. The win now theory should be out the door you don’t have the personnel to win now and surely not a QB to do so. So plan on winning in 2021 or retire it is simple as that.

  76. Joe Says:

Uhhh, and you Joe begged folks to draft Johnny Manziel.

First, Joe isn’t an NFL head coach with strong ties to an NFL ownership group and (at the time) the head coach.

Also, Johnny could throw a forward pass.

    Love Johnny!

  77. Sharthappens Says:

Arians also got some support from his wife, Christine, who also weighed in on social media.

Wait a minute, if I’m the Glazers and I don’t have confidence in my GM or the 100 staff in BA’s Christmas Tree; no way in heck am I letting them F with the players through a trade except for Dare and Perriman who are obvious dead weight on this roster.

No F-ing way do they touch this team if they suck as coaches. I mean, we have a coach who is only here because he got his OC and DC and otherwise would walk.

I don’t know about you, but I want coaches and players who want to be here. We are not the ideal destination for players, so keep the good ones and don’t screw us over more by getting some has-been vet or on the way out vet who’ll replace one of our promising younger players.

  80. Buddy Says:

@NOLES- so did Lovie, Mike Smith, Jim Harbaugh, Ron Rivera Jason Garret and Matt Nagy last year. So like i said Bucco Bruce hasn’t won anything as a HC,
Coach of the year means NOTHING!!!None of those guys have won a SBowl and neither has Grandpa Bruce

  81. lambchop Says:

Jenna Laine is reporting that now the Bucs are open to trading Juice for a 1st Rd. pick. I will lose my sh:t if this happens. We could see the impact Juice makes with a playcaller like Monken/Koetter.

We cant even draft right and they want a 1st round pick? HEL NO to the Patriots. That will be the 32nd pick in the draft. No way.

This coaching staff, on the offensive side of the ball, is out to lunch. Clearly. They won’t make it to next season the rate we are playing. If they get to decide on trading Juice because of their inept play calling, I’m peace out on the Bucs for good.

    For good.

  82. Defense Rules Says:

NOLES … Not sure about your ‘BA isn’t THE ISSUE’ stance. I’ve never like scapegoats, because in my experience they’re rarely THE PROBLEM. BA keeps pointing at various scapegoats (too him it was refs, receivers & Secondary in yesterday’s game). Yet none of those are THE PROBLEM IMO.

Yesterday was Game SEVEN of the season, and yet this Bucs’ team continues to make mistakes that good college teams don’t make. Miscommunication on the snap? Seriously? Miscommunication on the handoff? Really? Receivers & their QB not having a clue what the other is gonna do? Ridiculous. These players are professionals making millions to do a JOB, and they’re failing at it. The real questions are WHY do these mistakes keep recurring, WHO should be held ACCOUNTABLE, and HOW do you FIX IT so it doesn’t keep happening.

Personally I’m relatively satisfied with the progress being made by the defense & S/Ts. They weren’t the CAUSE of yesterday’s loss. I’m disgusted however with this offense. There’s NO EXCUSE for the performance that we saw yesterday, and particularly not in the 7th game of the season AND after a Bye week. This team was struggling BEFORE the Bye week, and yet all I read about was how they needed to get away and relax. If I read correctly, they had ONE padded practice last week. ONE.

The talent on this team isn’t close to what I’d like, BUT it is what it is. The ACCOUNTABILITY for what we saw yesterday though rests squarely on the shoulders of Bruce Arians & his offensive coaching staff led by Byron Leftwich. Preparation is obviously lacking. Play design, to include blocking assignments obviously, needs to be looked at very closely. Play-call selection was abysmal yesterday, and that’s not the first game where that’s been the case. Play execution IMO really gets back to preparation, play design & to an extent ‘motivation’ & ‘want-to’. Personally doubt that the latter is a major factor; these guys know which side their bread is buttered on. COACHING is at the heart of THE ISSUE that you referenced. And yes, in BA’s case, the Bucs stop there.

  83. Defense Rules Says:

Oh Joe, you crack me up … “Love Johnny!” I’ll give you this, he could hold his liquor.

  84. Wesley Says:

He should be worried. His OC sucks and his team is often not prepared.

  85. Frank Pillow Says:

Bruce and Jason and likeable fellas…I desperately want them both to succeed here. However, the roster has more holes than a wheel of swiss cheese, the coaching and play-calling have been suspect and our play on the field has regressed….all of that ain’t b/c a zebra blew his whistle early.

  86. Jmarkbuc Says:

Why Would BSA be worried about his job?

Knowing the Glazers, I’m sure the contract his guaranteed. So win, lose, or leave town he gets paid. Just a little extra for the retirement fund…and it’s beautiful up here near BSA’s lake house.

  87. lambchop Says:

    @Joe,

The 2015 #1 pick was either Jameis or Mariota. How can you hold it against Tony Dungy for picking one?

They both suck and either way we would have lost out on that pick.

Your argument never changes, and it’s always re-goddam-diculous.

WHEN THE ON FIELD RESULTS CHANGE SO WILL MY HONEST AND POSITIVE TAKES ON REALITY!!!!!

  89. Matthew Fifer Says:

    @Buddy

As a citizen of Chicago and lifelong Cubs fan, watch what you say about Maddon. We may have been down this year, but he will be forever loved in this city. He brought us a World Series win which was 108 years in the making.

I agree about BA, but leave Joe out of this. I wish him nothing but the best with the Angels.

  90. Nick2 Says:

Buddy what rock did you crawl from out from, Bruce Arians has been NFL coach of the year twice. A fraud???? Too funny, actually we are lucky to have a coach of this caliber come to our god forsaken team and try to resurrect it. Problem is we are more of a mess than he had any idea of. Turns out Jason Licht isnt a good GM but he is a great salesman lol,.

  91. down in the dirt doug Says:

Our team is now heading down a long lonely road with a lack of proper direction.Have no fears there is a Licht at the end of this journey.
Our owners will not fire Mr nice guy.SOLUTION——-HIRE A PRESIDENT OF OPERATIONS AND REPLACE SOME OF LICHTS STAFF.LICHT LIKES TO BE FRIENDS WITH OUR PLAYERS.LET THE PRESIDENT MAKE MORE OF THE WHO STAYS AND WHO GOES DIRECTIVES.

  92. ATL Bucs Fan Says:

    hey tmax,

Could you tell us how you really feel? I didn’t really catch it in your first 6 comments.

  93. Son of Kobe Faker Says:

“BRUCE ARIANS IS INDEED A FRAUD

The self claimed QB whisker came here telling us he can improve JW and the offense

He signed the contract though the Glasers wasn’t happy about it

He then states He won’t be involved in the offense. He won’t even attend the offensive game planning

He has given all the control and decisions to an unqualified Stiff who was just fired last year

    BA IS INDEED A FRAUD”

    Friend of Buddy

  94. Bobby M. Says:

I think his bigger concern is he’s not interested in grooming a rookie and actually having to stick around for a rebuild which is exactly where this thing is headed.

Arians is signed on for 5 yrs….Winston has this yr left and simply is not doing enough to earn an extension. If they unload players for picks, that could mean the Glazers are ready to blow this thing up and i doubt they let Licht make any more picks.

    hey tmax,

I’ll work on being more clear

  96. lewis Says:

JW makes everything look bad it flows over to every part of the game

  97. Bucs Fan Since ‘76 Says:

The Glazers gave Arians an “arse chewing,” and Licht told Arians the Glazers are “fed up?” At this point Joe, are we to assume your claims the Glazers know what they are doing to be purely rhetorical? They are 0 and forever at hiring head coaches and GM’s. I for one would like someone to ask them point blank whether they are coming to the realization they have absolutely, positively, no clue what they are doing and will never succeed so long as they are in charge. Everything they have touched has turned to sludge. Someone in their inner circle needs to speak truth to power. Until then, all the talk of players, schemes, coaches and the draft, is mental masturbation.

  98. Figures Says:

    Joe

Sorry couldn’t hold it in anymore

  99. Jerry Says:

The truth is coming out. We need a smarter team. Can’t blame Arian’s for that.

He inherited the team and you can only change so much the first year. I have to believe he will weed out who needs to be gone.

He basically said the process he his using now has worked every where else he has coached.

When drafting and in FA, the good teams rate the brain and personal pride extremely high. Every player is a premier athlete. You can get them stronger and quicker, not necessarily smarter.

The more fine-tuned the details need to be the smarter the player must be. 8 weeks in and we are seeing who will make it as an NFL player and who won’t. Looks like some bad drafting, IMO.

  100. Mike Johnson Says:

Buc fans remind of an old R&B tune by Bobby Womack. “Nobody wants you..when you’re down and out” or that movie, the Invaders where Donald Southerland opens his mouth wide and lets out an accusatory scream at everybody!
This team and its fanbase is deeply hurting right now. So theres not even enough players or coaches to blame. What did we give Koetter? 3 yrs? Arians is not a Loser. give him a chance to right this ship. You gave that chance to others even less qualified.

  101. Figures Says:

    Tmaxcon

    Why you so mad?

Your EBT card empty and you have to pay for food with your own money for the next few days?

  102. ElioT Says:

Man, some of these comments are downright disgraceful.

    Tmax,

You’re outta line bashing the likes of #20 and #55…

    Wow.

Who the f**k are you, and what have you done?

  103. ElioT Says:

    Joe:

    “Love Johnny”

    Wow!

    Classy, intelligent stuff there.

This website is degenerating just like the Bucs franchise.

    Ed Morse should be proud.

  104. Jmarkbuc Says:

    MJ

If that’s true then BSA could be more genuine, this ain’t Pittsburgh or Indy or AZ.

We know BS when we see it, cuz we’ve seen plenty.

  105. NPRSageBoy Says:

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the witness protection program of the NFL. It’s where clueless MFer’s who claim to be coaches disappear to with Glazer money to spend

I’m tired of years of this BS…how can other teams turn their dates around in two years and this clueless bunch of A$$ Monkeys are still search after a decade?

Even Stevie Wonder can see how F’ed up this franchise truly is.

    Burn it down…NOW!

    Peace, out…

  106. SappAttack Says:

every coach deserves two full seasons unless he goes 0-16 in the first, and even then you have exceptions like Flores will get this year. It’s been 8 weeks. We could go 5-3 or 6-2 to finish who knows. New staff, new schemes both sides of the ball, 2nd youngest team, brutal travel schedule, a turnover machine at QB. The fact that we have two wins and haven’t been blown out in any or our losses is a sign in the right direction for this franchise, unfortunately. And this fanbase wants to start over again? SMH

  107. BUC CHEEKS Says:

Smh… it truly is a BUCS life! Got up for another waste of a season. Time to PURGE, start the sirens!!! I’ve seen enough.

  108. garbs65 Says:

I’m a little naive. Why do we not get to hear from Licht? Why does he not have a weekly press conference where direct questions are asked? Does this happen and I just miss it? Or is it just the way it is. That the coach and a few star players get post game interviews and weekly radio shows. Btw, I listened to WDAE today and a looking interview or show with Suh. I was waiting for the interviewer/host to get into wtf is wrong with this team and all I got was an autobiography from Suh and questions on his personal life. Which were fine, but I don’t really want to hear that crap. However, Suh does seem like a very well spoken, intelligent man. Go Bucs.

  109. garbs65 Says:

That should read “post game interview”. Damn auto correct.

  110. Allbuccedup Says:

When he made the statement about trading that hes worried about now not next year the real translation is screw all of you fans its all about me.
