Todd Bowles has a new challenge

Interesting commentary from the best defensive player in the 2019 NFL, Bucs linebacker Shaq Barrett.

Barrett was on SiriusXM NFL Radio this week and was asked about how he logged a whopping 81 snaps (including penalties) for the Tampa Bay defense.

“You really don’t even think about it,” Barrett said. “Once my coach told me how many plays I played, I was shocked.”

Still, that’s a tremendous amount of snaps for a guy who was a part-time player before he arrived in Tampa.

That got Joe thinking about how the Bucs hosted the Browns last season and the offense played 90+ snaps in the Tampa heat and Dirk Koetter spoke multiple times about how that drained the team. Did the Bucs looked drained to you against the Rams? Not to Joe.

Regardless, that huge snap total is something to file in the back of your mind as the Bucs head to New Orleans for back-to-back road games. There could be an overload hangover for some on the Bucs defense, though the interior defensive line had a lot of rotation. Joe is wondering how Todd Bowles might adjust to keep the team fresh.

Barrett dropped other interesting nuggets. Joe will summarize below:

*Barrett said he’s been watching a lot more film this year and playing more aggressively. He scoffed at the suggestion that there’s something in the Tampa water that’s improved his game.

*Former Steelers Pro Bowl linebacker Joey Porter coached Barrett his senior year at Colorado State and Porter “got me to start jumping the snap count more often. He helped me a lot with [my get-off].” Barrett admitted is get-off wasn’t good in college.

*On Bowles, Barrett sadi. “He’s brilliant. He has schemes for everybody. Like people can’t really get used to what we do because it’s changing.” Barrett added that Bowles brings a tremendous urgency to his coaching and a huge stress on physicality.

I got a feeling Sean Payton will try to attack Shaq Barrett by running a healthy dose of screen plays at him.

This is something I’ll be watching for on Sunday & if it plays out will say a lot to the preperation of this defense. Have to assume Payton will do something to try and force Barret to defend more of the field. Could be a fun game of cat & mouse between Payton and Bowles.

    Soft Camp Koetter strikes again!

Doctor Stroud you beat me to it. You hit the nail on the head.

Bring the house on Sunday. Shut down Kamara like we’ve been shutting down other elite backs the past 3 weeks and force Teddy Checkdown to beat you throwing the ball. If they get behind in the scoreboard enough he’ll have to take shots down field, then we feast.

Ready for a quiet Superdome! Who dat? Shaq Dat!

Shaq vs the screen game has been good so far this season. His awareness to spot the play design has been actually been a breath of fresh air. Multiple times vs Rams and Panthers, the opposing offense threw quick, at-the-LOS passes/screens and Barrett was able to WREAK HAVOC and disrupt the play/make the tackle.

He was part of two game changing plays (IMO) during the Rams: 4th-and-1 screen play which ended with his first INT <– this was as much of a confidence booster for the Bucs as Gay hitting the 58 yarder; and the game-defining sack/fumble that Suh took house.

Big time players, make big time plays, in big time games.

Shaq hit the trifecta this past weekend and he will continue to pose a threat to opposing offenses.

LVD has also been playing like a man on a mission, totally dominating sideline-to-sideline. I look for him to spy Kamara all day long, with Minter providing the A-gap pressure, should D. White be unable to make a start.

To the d-line rotation: I LOVE IT! Nacho and Beau Allen played great. Gholston showed up early with a batted-down pass. The hope is that A. Nelson and the rest of the rotation (also LE starter Nassib) show up big in N.O. to engulf Teddy and the Saints.

  7. Slugglife Says:

Hopefully we’ll be able to see D white at full speed closing on those screens.

I’ve been waiting for the day he meets Kamara behind the LOs. As for Shaq? That beast of a man has made watching our defense fun again. And the 2 F350s in the middle- yeah.

    Much more fun this way.

  8. Slugglife Says:

Damn, didn’t mean to forget LVD. Here’s to hoping we can heap some praise on the d-backs come next Monday.

Joey Porter also the PRIDE of CSU! ‘Sko Rams!

  10. Rod Munch Says:

81 snaps in LA is like 55 snaps in Tampa.

Following the back and forth between Rod and myself.

Remember weather is a moot point in N.O. Air Conditioned comfort for all.

What I love about this team is that Sack Barrett would go nuckin futs if he saw this thread. He would view this all as just an excuse. He snaps his chin strap and let’s it rip.

If you ever played any kind of sport then you know fatigue is not an issue at his age. Now if you were suh or say Geraldine yea those guys at their age in the trenches do wear down, only geraldine wears down after freaking week 4. Get back to me about fatigue after the road trip.

Excuse-maker Koetter. The whole point of “ball control” is to win the time of posession. If your offense runs 90 plays, that means you forced their defense to play 90 snaps, which is a good thing.

The press should have killed Dirk for even saying that stupid spit.

    ——————-

His responsibilities differ from play to play but his recognition of the 4th down pass against the Rams is a good indicator that he is up to defending the screen game. That said, when he rushes along with the other front three, that is technically only rushing four and NOT really a blitz, he is pretty much a stand up DE on most plays. We have three other LBs and safeties that have responsibilities in the screen and coverage game when he is rushing.
