Light Blitzing, Smart Blitzing

October 5th, 2019

Saints DC Dennis Allen

It should be a quite a chess match tomorrow between the Saints defense and the Tampa Bay offense.

What quarterback leads the NFL when blitzed? That would be America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston. Against the blitz he’s the top dog when it comes to completion percentage, yards per attempt, touchdowns and passer rating.

Will the Saints blitz Jameis? That’s a good question. The Saints lead the NFL in quarterback pressures when they blitz, but they only blitz on 22 percent of dropbacks. They pick their spots well.

Like the Rams, the Saints have a bunch of elite, first-round talent on their defensive line. The Bucs had little trouble with what the Rams had to offer, though, last Sunday. But as NFL fans have seen, this Rams defense looks like a shell of its 2018 self, and Aaron Donald looks very mortal through five games.

The Saints have 10 sacks, one less than the Bucs, but it’s been very balanced with the 10 coming from seven players. The Bucs’ have 11 sacks and Shaq Barrett has nine.

The point here is the Saints likely are the least predictable and most balanced defense Jameis has seen this season. Joe hopes Jameis will keep staying within his game and offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich will be as sharp as he was Sunday, when he completely outfoxed iconic defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.

TOMORROW in YBOR CITY!!!!!!

Such a huge game on so many levels tomorrow.

This time last year our record was exactly the same, 2-2 2 wins in conference
    1-0 in the division.

    Then the wheels came off.

Here’s hoping we go the other direction tomorrow. The next 5 weeks ARE the season. We get through that in relatively good shape and the future is bright.

  2. TexBuc Says:

I see them pay too much attention to #13 and #12, but forget about #84 and #80.

    Bucs win 31-13.

  3. Jmarkbuc Says:

Would love to see some more creativity on Offense tomorrow….some jet sweep action, or at least another RB screen..the first one went for 40 +. Would also love to see one or both TE’s in the game plan…let’s show Payton he’s not the smartest guy in the room, like he always thinks he is…

On D.. stop 41 obviously, and play secondary like you know how to….

  4. Ben real Says:

Bucs BA saints … I got the saints in this one … and let’s keep it real here … the Bucs May have #1 run defense but that’s because teams are throwing on us … we’re giving up a crap load of yards in the pass game … giants 49ers and rams stopped running because they knew attacking us thru the air is our weakness … prove me wrong bucs but until I see this team improve in that area I’m going against you in the picks … saints by 7

  5. BucInCLE Says:

Jameis needs to go right at Eli Apple. All day. Make them pick their poison. Godwin or Evans.

  6. Pete Says:

    Bucs 31
    Saints 20

  7. BucEmUp Says:

The rams defense was partially supported by their offense last year. Now that nfl defenses have figured out the offense and how to fluster goff, the defense is on the field more.

I hope Leftwhich scemes and plans to help Jameis get the ball out quickly. Quick passes with yac will keep the blitz off with selective plays down field. Our oline has looked good and I think a healthy dose of ROJO is in order

Im betting against the bucs because they always win when I do

  8. JimmyJack Says:

Would have to assume Payton will try to disguise his blitz.

Aot of his philosophy runs from being tricky and leaving his opponent guessing.

We better have a good enough staff to see if he blitzes too much and to take advantage. I doubt they try to it.

What scares me is hearing how they already had a punt return TD this year. The Saints are extremely well coached and if they got a chance to take advantage of our ST unit they will be prepared to do just that……..If we are not equally prepared it could be the difference in game……….we all saw it last year when a punt block cost us a W. That was a BS way to lose a game and the 2019 Bucs need to be better then that.

  9. Buccernutter Says:

    Ben real

I’m not sure if you’re watching the games but we are shutting down the run no matter what plays their calling or how bad the passing defense is. We have completely embarrassed any running game a team thinks they may have no matter what you think the excuse is.

My God can this fan base ever give credit where it’s due? McCaffrey gurley and Barkley to under 100 yards. Rbs that normally average close to 100 yards. Nah dude that’s not a fluke. There is no excuse for them.

If we can do the same with kamara, Thomas will ball absolutely but bridge will have turnovers or not enough to keep up with our offense. Bet.

  10. Figures Says:

    Jimmyjack

Go read my comment to you on the Justin Watson article.

Your hypocrisy is ridiculous. But you wouldn’t know it with your FSU goggles on.

Btw how bout dem Gators lmao. FSU sucks

  11. Figures Says:

    Jimmyjack

Go read my article to you on the Justin Watson story.

Hypocrisy at its finest. Those FSU goggles are working just fine.

Btw how about those Gators lmao.

  12. BigMacAttack Says:

Teddy Bridgewater is not Drew Brees though. Not even close. I’m picking the Bucs tomorrow by 11.

  13. Tye Says:

Saints are well coached, seasoned against some of the league’s best which the Bucs are not, and though Teddy does not instill confidence as a qb, he has been doing enough to beat good teams…
The Bucs have played well sporadically just to resort back to losing…
they really need to prove something tomorrow…
Don’t think they have it in them.
    Saints 24
    Bucs 13

  14. David Says:

I see the Buccaneers winning. I think the offense keeps getting better and the defense should keep getting better as the young DBs slowly improve week to week.

I see OJ Howard exploding this game…

I can’t focus anymore … I just keep thinking about the field goal at the end of the Giants game 🤬

  15. Defense Rules Says:

Tomorrow’s game SHOULD be a dogfight & come down to a difference of one TD or less. Saints won Game 1 thanks to … Drew Brees, but once he went down in Game 2, everything changed for the Saints offense.

o Game 1: Saints beat the Texans 30-28 … Saints had 25 first downs & 510 yds TOTAL offense (362 passing; 148 rushing) … Saints defense gave up 414 Total yds.
o Game 2: Saints lost to the Rams 27-9 … only had 15 first downs & 244 TOTAL yds of offense (187 passing; 57 rushing) … Saints defense gave up 380 Total yds.
o Game 3: Saints beat the Seahawks 33-27 … only had 15 first downs & 265 TOTAL yds of offense (177 passing; 88 rushing) … Saints defense gave up 514 Total yds.
o Game 4: Saints beat the Cowboys 12-10 … only had 18 first downs & 266 TOTAL yds of offense (149 passing; 117 rushing) … Saints defense gave up only 257 Total yds (only 45 yds rushing & forced 3 TOs).

Saints game against the Cowboys was a classic Sean Payton gameplan. They won the TOP battle 36:04 to 23:56 thanks to a bunch of rushes (27) and short passing. They also won the turnover battle (3-1). Amazingly the Saints offense has only scored 84 points (21.0 PPG average) but their defense has hung tough (despite giving up a lot of yardage). Nevertheless, if we win the turnover battle & the TOP battle, we should be victorious, although I’d expect a score more along the lines of 24-20 in our favor.

  16. JimmyJack Says:

Figures done and done. Also, you’re pretty lame.

    And your stupid too.

  17. JimmyJack Says:

I see no way the Bucs can’t compete tomorrow.

This could be a tight game but I also think we could light up the Endzone and the Saints are unable to keep up.

My guess is either a close match or Buccaneers blowout.

    I’m a Homer so I predict a easy Bucs Win 29-17.

  18. David Says:

    FIGURES AND JIMMYJACK

Hate to jump in but is this some sort of running feud from the past?
If not, as an objective bystander, all I saw was JimmyJack making some comments and valid points and then Figures jumping in and being an ass towards him.

WTF dude? We are all rooting for the same team.
JimmyJack was absolutely right that Perriman and Watson and some rookie who has barely sniffed the grass of the field haven’t done a thing this year or last year.
And yes, Bobo has one more year than Watson and hasn’t done much more. He said it’s time for him to put up or shut up since he’s being put in there. Makes sense to me, and I’m a gator fan.

Anyway I agree with another poster who said Perriman and Bobo Are getting a look because they’re a different type of receiver then Godwin and Evans, and Watson is the same type as them.

  19. Son of Kobe Faker Says:

    “NFL is a copycat league

Dennis Allen is a good DC

He knows the strengths and BLs comfort zone

90% of the targets and production is from ME and Godwin

Allen is going to make JW3 throw underneath because both wrs are goinging to be blanketed by 2 defenders

OJ/ RB screens/10 yard pass routes should be open…

My Dad is scared of this defensive front. They completely stopped Zeke , online and contained Dak

My Dad said Bucs offensive line svks

    Saints 24 Bucs 17

Saints Defensive line destroy the pathetic Bucs oline”

    Son of Kobe Faker

  20. Pewter power Says:

This team is in the playoffs very year, drew brees isn’t the only that has performed in big games with a lot on the line. This will be the true measure of our teams progression and how well this coaching staff can scheme big wins. Your just being a homer if you cant overall even without drew Brees they have a better more consistent roster. We’ve got guys that have only been playing well a few games versus a team of guys playing well over a number of years.

  21. Dave Says:

its saturday night and the same 4-6 losers on here every day posting non stop, get a life guys, get a date, try bumble if your lonely, make a friend, go outside make a real friend and get a life… Have a good evening gentleman, whacking your wanker to JoeBucsFan

  22. JimmyJack Says:

All good David……Don’t think I had ever talked to Figures before but I have saw his body of work and he is always crapping on the Bucs, our players & our fans.

Maybe he is disgruntled from years of losing which is understandable but it is sad his entire vision of our team seems to be tainted and he shares no opinion of anything good and it’s only bad.

No matter how bad things get there is always at least a few good pieces/players to build around and have hope for. But fans like figures got the negative track record and outlook to have their backs. So let em hate on the Bucs and do what they gotta do…..I’ll have my teams back even through the tough spots and mature from it.

And don’t never forget that Tampa Bay is loaded with yankees who don’t give a rats ass about the Bucs. But they live here and we are their team no matter how hard they fight it. …….But at the end of the day they are not true Buc fans………Just like with most of our media’s, don’t let them fool you. This is our team. Not theirs

  23. diggler Says:

Impossible to predict saints bucs showdown those games are always last minute nail biters. Hope to hell it goes our way.

  24. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Chris Godwin should have another great game. Saints 3 LB are average at best. I think Bucs will utilize their TE in their passing offense this game. Should be a good game for OJ and Brate.

  25. JimmyJack Says:

Jeez Ray’s……This has been some fine pitching but we look absolutely incapable at the plate. Don’t care what the scoreboard says we have not earned a run all series long……Not none that matters.

17 innings in and we either playing with fire waiting so long to hit the ball or we just are no good enough to win a playoff series.

Understood that Astros have some truely elite pitching but if you guys can’t do more then nothing for almost the entire series the spare us all the hotsyreak and the pennant chase…..If ya wanna make a pennant run then finish it strong……..Not going down softly cause they got good pitchers.

Two more innings…..time to get your head straight or ya may as well git

  26. Figures Says:

    Lmao

    Jimmyjack that is bull crap.
I don’t always crap on the Bucs. I have crapped all over the Glazers though. And a little bit on Licht. I’ve seen every game since 1987.
I never crap on the fans at all. I don’t think I’ve ever made a comment about Bucs fans.
Usually the only thing I’m going on about is Winston or you FSU homers.
And by the way I’ve done nothing but give Winston props for his performance last week.

You must have me confused with someone else.

I was just pointing out your FSU bias that’s all.

I actually like jimmyjack. He’s pretty rational.

    Bobo sucks

  27. orlbucfan Says:

If Leftwich can beat Wade Phillips, he certainly can beat Dennis Allen. These games are always dogfights. Payton is a known cheater and has been suspended by the NFL in the past over it. Hope BA is aware of it. Hope our good guys outplay the h3ll out of this Bunch! Bucs 27-NOLA 20. Go Tampa Bay!!

OMG, YOU’RE an idiot and you don’t even know it. You’re the type of idiot that thinks he’s smart. What did you say on the previous article over and over again? “I ain’t done see Perriman do nothing” Your IQ must be minuscule.

  29. Buccfan37 Says:

Go Bucs! Wipe that ugly smirk off the Aints HC’s face.
