Got Godwin Right

October 23rd, 2019

“Jason, who the hell did you hoodwink to get Chris Godwin in the third round? Were you spreading sh!t about the kid?”

A loss in the Tennessee Ready Game II would put the Bucs’ 2019 season on the brink of collapse.

Unless defenders are added at the trade deadline, Joe doesn’t see this team pulling itself up from a 2-5 record to make a wild card run when it would have to catch at least six of the following eight teams: San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles, Green Bay, Minnesota, Philadelphia, Dallas and Detroit.

(Joe is of the mind that the Saints are a lock to win the NFC South.)

The math wouldn’t add up —  the team’s current makeup couldn’t let it go on a four- or five-game winning streak while getting fried for 300-plus yards passing each week.

Regardless what happens the rest of the month, the one major bright spot for the Bucs has been the development of Chris Godwin.

Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht stole him in the third round in 2017. And just like Bruce Arians predicted, Godwin has become an extremely valuable receiver. Maybe even a No. 1 receiver (Mike Evans told Joe a year ago that Godwin was a No. 1 receiver).

The crowd at Football Outsiders also likes Godwin. A lot. They used some type of statistical mumbo jumbo to deterine he is the most valuable wide receiver in the entire NFL. That’s right. More than Michael Thomas and Adam Thielen and T.Y. Hilton. You can see for yourself here.

While there is much to kvetch about with this Bucs team, how Godwin has skyrocketed to the top of the charts for NFL receivers in his first season as a full-time starter has been impressive.

DeSean who?

Imagine if you will…we had a QB that could take full advantage of the VERY talented pass catchers on this roster

  3. Ndog Says:

Imagine, if you will, if a QB had time in the pocket, had a good running game and didn’t have to score 35 points a game to win. Maybe we wouldn’t be talking about the QB at all because we are too CLUELESS to understand this is a team game and each thing affects the other.

I’ve been predicting 6-10 since the draft. I hate being right when it comes to this team. That being said, remember when Bonzai said the following?

No record predictions from me, but I won’t be surprised if we make the playoffs and get to the NFC Championship game.

He followed that up by saying,

I notice the haters scoff. That’s fine. Book mark this and see if you can make me eat crow. 😉

    I don’t mind accountability.

    Open wide, buddy!

That’s funny I think exactly one interception this year was targeted for Chris Godwin (and that was on 4th down right after Mike Evans didn’t come back to a pass right to his chest for a easy first down). You think maybe that is because Godwin actually comes back to and or fights for the ball? Think about it folks, think about it.

Don’t let the media tell you what to think use your own brain, if you have one.

You just described basically every current winning QB in the NFL. Outside of Mahomes, and even they had lost 2 in a row before he got hurt, please point to another QB winning games where they don’t have at least a decent running game or defense? I’ll wait…

  13. Ndog Says:

And BTW who said top 10 defense, we HAVE THE WORST IN THE LEAGUE!!!!!! I would settle for average.

    @Joe,

Can you do the research on the total number of picks Jason has made over the years? Win’s and loses. Something tells me it won’t be pretty.

  15. MadMax Says:

He watches us….quite a few of us wanted Godwin…wanted ROJO (almost striked that one up as a bad one though). I was the first to spread the word about Marpet when he was unknown, and the first maybe second one here to start preaching about Big V. Others I hoped we would draft (and couldve) have went on to do very good too.

Now ive had a few misses…and i really didnt want Suh, but ive changed my mind, he’s holding up. I wanted to get rid of Gholsten, but that wouldve been a mistake. Never wanted VHIII, but try to see the positive in him, he’s killing me though.

Now, Im thinking QB Jacob Eason….I saw a 5th and 6th round grade on him…am I missing something? This guy is def first round talent. He might drop out of the top ten, which works for us in a trade down from that 5-7 pick. Or spend a top pick on a cb, then grab Eason. I wanted Daniel Jones last draft if we were going QB and looky looky!!! I just get it i guess…something hits then i delve more into the vids then im sold.

Tom Bassinger did last year. Turns out Licht is about in the middle of the pack of GMs.

  17. MadMax Says:

Btw, we’re playing against another backup QB in Tennessee….you know where my money is at…but im not gambling this time….made a benjamine off the kitties game but that 3 consecutive loss stat that BA has, well, its got me spooked. But im still expecting a loss……hope im wrong though.

  18. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

Godwin had an excellent final bowl game vs. USC. A good pick indeed. It doesn’t, however, come close to making up for the mess Licht Weight has put the Bucs franchise in. Godwin will get a huge contract after next season…whether in Tampa or elsewhere. Evans looks like he needs a change of scenery…and keeping both appears to be unlikely…especially financially speaking.

  19. bucsfaninchina Says:

Trade Mike Evans. Clearly getting outperformed on this team that, let’s face it, is not making the playoffs this year.

  20. MadMax Says:

^ i said that 3 weeks ago….its unfortunate, but the cap hit and his playing vs Godwin = serious trade bait. I’d rather him than OJ since OJ is still on his rookie contract.

This request reminds me of all the times someone would ask Steve Duemig to do research on so-and-so and he’d bark back by saying, “Do your own research!”

Yeah Nick, I’m sure the Joe’s have plenty of time to do research for you in between writing articles, conducting interviews, recording podcasts, doing appearances, acquiring sponsors, ect.

    D-Rome:

Those stats are easily available at Pro Football Reference. If it is important enough to someone, they can take the 20 minutes to calculate the research. Besides, smells like someone has a pre-determined answer. Just looking for the numbers to justify it.

Sorry tough guy we’re not talking yards were talking points, you know the stat that matters, and the Packers have the 9th lowest points allowed in the league at 19.9 while we are rocking at 30th at allowing 30.8 points per game.

Try again sir, you’re welcome, ‘ll wait…

  27. Ndog Says:

In addition we average 28.8 points per game while GB averages 26.3 points per game this year.
It’s ok I know the brainwashing you have under gone hurts but the facts say I am right again. I know those pesky facts always getting in the way of a good made up narrative.

I didn’t know that zero TOs vs the Saints were responsible for 31 points scored or one TO that resulted in zero points were responsible for 32 points scored by the Giants or how 1 TO was responsible for the other 33 points scored by the Rams. Man you guys are amazing you are seeing that just aren’t happening, nice imagination.

A wild card spot is almost impossible at this point unless we win about 90% of our remaining schedule.

    49er: 6-0
    Saints: 5-1
    Packers: 6-1
    Vikings: 5-2
    Seahawks: 5-2

Does anyone honestly think we will finish with a better record than any of those teams? (NFC East doesn’t matter cuz one of those crappy teams automatically gets in)
