Unstoppable

It’s ok to crack half a smile for 25 seconds after a painful division loss.

Joe can think of one reason to go there this evening: Chris Godwin.

After another big statistical afternoon that made him a fantasy football hero, Godwin is now on pace for 1,631 yards, 19 touchdowns and 105 catches this season.

He is the Bucs’ best receiver right now and maybe, just maybe, he’s the best receiver in the NFL currently. His 511 yards are second to Michael Thomas, and Godwin doesn’t have the benefit of playing against the Tampa Bay pass defense.

Joe can’t say enough about Godwin. He’s 23. He plays through injury. He blocks. He’s tough. He’s versatile.

He’s also underpaid as a third-round pick and the Bucs are going to have an interesting decision after this season, assuming Godwin is healthy. It’s good business to give Godwin an early extension, like Lavonte David got after his third season, if the Bucs want to find a way to keep Godwin and Mike Evans together long term.

Yes, some of Godwin’s production today (7 catches for 125 yards and 2 touchdowns) was in garbage time. But Joe’s not going to take that away from him. At least it got the Bucs to within an onside kick miracle.

Godwin is proving to be the best overall selection of the Licht era.

  2. DB55 Says:

The kid is good. No excuses just plays ball. Reminds me of a guy we used to have on the team named Cameron Brate kid was a baller before he got cut.

  3. BucsBandit Says:

Winston was 9/19 for a mighty 105 yards before the game was over late in the 4th.

PAY THAT MAN HIS $35,000,000 A YEAR, STAT!

  4. SB Says:

I have Godwin on ALL THREE of my $ FF leagues.
I am winning All of them.
I am 5 and 0 and 3 and 2 in the other two.
CG12 is leading all of them. Christian McCafferey is making one league all by himself but CG12 is Tops in all WR stats for me.

  5. SB Says:

I remember a bunch of fans here claiming McCaffery was just a “Gimmick College player”
    LOL

  6. DooshLaRue Says:

A wise organization would explore the opportunities that trading ME13 might bring.
I’ve been saying this for awhile and it’s not just about today’s game or his season so far.
I like Mike, but I think we could be better without him providing we use the bounty from his trade to lock down DB and OL.
It would make us a better team.

  7. JimmyJack Says:

Thanks for this article Joe and trying to lift some spirits……. Unfortunately for me it never works. Another bright spot I did see today(again) was Ronald Jones. Made several defenders miss today and has made a habit of that the last two games. He looked to be one step away on one of his runs today and quite frankly I will be surprised if he does take one to the house in the next week or so.

  8. SB Says:

I see what you did there DB55

  9. Ate one tree Says:

    Pay the man!!!

  10. DB55 Says:

    😉

  11. Ndog Says:

He is the best WR on this team, period. Best in traffic, best at YAC and best in the clutch.

  12. Rayjay1122 Says:

    Godwin is a baller!

  13. SB Says:

It is time we realize what NFL teams DC has already realized.
    Tampa has WR1a and WR1a
    Godwin is a Beast?

  14. SB Says:

    And Hargreaves is done!
As a Gators alum and supersupporter I just can’t do it anymore.
Dude just doesn’t have it if he can’t jam the wr at the line.

  15. Tvan101 Says:

    What happened to OJ Howard?

  16. OBP Says:

Gotta extend him now, his price is only gonna go up more as he balls out.

  17. adam from ny Says:

godwin is getting knocked around lot…he’s a dude who needs an ice bath after every game…

mike evans makes sure he remains clean…and his yac is a perfect example of why he’s slipping…

don’t get me wrong – both our receivers are terrific…the real problem is we have no 3rd and 4th receiver…just dudes acting as if

  18. adam from ny Says:

the offensive coaching staff should be backslapped as to why they have the best tight end tandem in the league that doesn’t get used…

the pair should have a minimum of 150 yards per game with approx a dozen catches between them…

also tight ends wear down db’s when they collide because of the size differential…

what is wrong with the bucs ?

  19. orlbucfan Says:

Arians, Bowles, and Leftwich have to get on the same page with these players. Coaching lost the game today. I saw Payton smirking cos I was stuck watching the tube. I could not get Bucs Radio today. Still po’d over it. I better see Payton crying when Bucs play this bunch in Tampa. It will mean that the players have adapted to their new coaches.

  20. Adrnagy Says:

Saints plan … attack Hargreaves. How can the Bucs allow so much passing yards in defense ?
How can Dotson be starting. Dude can barely get up.

We stay close because Godwin. Idk why we don’t trade for Ramsey. We had acouple chances to win. Ball or ref didn’t bounce our way.

  21. Topcoach_78 Says:

I said it before the season this is not a tight end friendly offense and we can see it’s TRUE at this point were phasing the tight ends out and he had a big man crush on Godwin and rightfully so! But ME13 is feelings the effects from it you gotta find ways to utilize what was called one of the best WR/TE group in the league but now we see its either CG12 or ME13 or nothing! All these weapons but offense is struggling!

  22. Ben real Says:

Say bye to mike Evans soon .. he’s gonna demand a trade in a year maybe 2

  23. Figures Says:

    @dooslarue

Lmao trading Mike Evans is exactly something this stupid franchise would do lol. And something everyone around the league would laugh at the Bucs for doing.

Stupid idea. Terrible idea. But wouldn’t surprise me in the least.

  24. Figures Says:

The fact that Howard and Brate are irrelevant in this offensive scheme tells me it’s a bad scheme.

Terrible. Brate has been money and now nothing.

Leftwich should not be calling plays and it’s obvious he has no idea how to use these players strengths.

Howard should be blowing up every week with his mismatch. Instead he’s a
    Da mn blocker.

This isn’t gonna end well. Too many weapons for a second year play caller. We need a veteran OC that knows how to use their weapons not someone who’s basically learning on the fly.

  25. Bucup Says:

Trading mike Evans right now would be the dumbest move they ever made and shouldn’t even be talked about… Godwin is a beast and is proving he is a number 1 receiver but having mike Evans on the other side of him makes his job that much easier

  26. Ndog Says:

Lets just say it like it is, our Oline is average at best, or dline is average at best and or secondary is well below average. I mean our WR’s while not great are good enough to get by, Ronald Jones is good enough, Jameis is more than good enough, and our linebackers are good enough. Our special teams is ok but not horrible, despite that HUGE missed kick. But the Oline and secondary is just not going to get it done. But the real concern is we have drafted 6 DB’s in the last two years and we still see guys running free under two different systems now. So this just doesnt feel like something coaching can fix so that means we are in real trouble if these guys dont get better really quick.

  27. Ndog Says:

I actually agree with Figures for once, not using these guys is just sad. Howard doesn’t seem to be getting open much as every time the ball is thrown to him he has a guy in his pocket and Brate just seems to never be on the field. I just think they don’t trust the oline to block without keeping them in to chip at least. But again this defense is just not working but then again what defense would work whne you cant get pressure or cover anybody?

  28. Petty Officer Buc Says:

I don’t know if it is Licht or the coaching staff that loves Scotty Miller, but I felt that every single pass to him today was forced and dangerous. I also didn’t realize how short he was until I saw him in the pile and when he went up against the Saints CB’s.

He needs to stay on Special Teams for now.

  29. FR Says:

This is the NFL guys good coaches look at film and learn how to defeat the opposing team. Teams are going to learn how to beat us and if we dont change things up we will lose lose and lose. Shut down Shaq Barrett, Evans ect. and look what happens, u think other teams are not going to see this now and do the same to beat us. I really dislike Winston but love the Bucs he continues to throw int’s day in and day out, just pressure him and BAM int.

  30. BA FAN Says:

Our running game was a bright spot. Davis was needed and has to be more careful to avoid targeting. Hargreaves isn’t fast enough and too small and too slightly built to start in the NFL. With experience Bunting can bulk up more and replace him. Dean needs to get stronger too but has the height, length, and speed to start as well and will need more experience. Dotson will need to be replaced. Thomas is a stud and the best WR in the league and proved it last night. As well playing on AstroTurf with their loud crowd in a dome is a big advantage for the Saints that they won’t have when we play them again and why the Saints have been eliminated before making it to the Super Bowl two years in a row.

  31. TonyC Says:

What you’re seeing is a poorly constructed team(particularly on defense) facing a team with well thought out personnel. Licht I maintain is a below average evaluator of free agent talent and has let go of good safeties in the past and made no effort to sign solid db veterans. BA’s claim that the defensive backfield is “fixed” is increasingly absurd by the day.

  32. TonyC Says:

Why in the name of god were they throwing to Scotty Miller? JW overthrew him and seems to have trouble with shorter receivers. Where the hell was Justin Watson did he have a target tonight? He seems like a much more legitimate number 3.

  33. H8JWLveBucs Says:

1.Evans looks pissed and feels he would do better on a winning team
2.Leftwich looks like he wants to tell Aries to shut the hell up on the sideline
3.Arias throwing player under the bus, players going to rebel
4.Arias should be in the booth calling plays not a head coach
5.Teams learning how to beat the Bucs
6.Fans keep making excuses for Winston int’s

  34. FanO’Bucs Says:

    Two thumbs up @Figures

  35. jjbucfan Says:

Jameis had 2 TDs and 0 interceptions today morons.

  36. John Says:

Where in tf is oj Howard? No excuse for this. We dont use the te at all. B.a. and leftwich killing our offense because of it.

  37. jjbucfan Says:

Why don’t they just use OJ as the 3rd receiver and put him in the slot. It doesn’t seem that hard to me. Shoot, go 4 wide and put Brate in the other slot. A little ingenuity can make all the difference.

  38. George Rauh Says:

We can keep both. Cardinals had Fitzs and Boldin. Rams had Bruce and Holt.

  39. Jean Lafitte Says:

Everything I said durig the summer that would happen to ME13 during this season is happening now. I said that with DJax’s departure the enemy would exclusively double team ME13 most of the time. Minimizing his contribution. Godwin is doing great but he’s not keeping Evans clean. I also said that ME13 would reach a breaking point, and mentally he’ll either check out, or become that greasy wheel. We’re 5 games in and wait till the press starts badgering him on his lack of production.
