The Best (In NFC South)?

September 29th, 2019

Climbing the division.

For some time, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, was stuck in the basement.

Jameis played in a division with three quarterbacks who led their teams to a Super Bowl. All three also were named Associated Press “Offensive Player of the Year.”

Meanwhile, Jameis struggled mightily trying to lead a team mired in a losing culture before he too was benched in a panic move by his coach desperate to save his job and perhaps deflect blame.

Yes, Jameis was the fourth-best quarterback in a four-team division.

This year, well, Jameis, Joe believes, is the third-best quarterback in the division thanks to pouty Cam Newton’s horrible play and mounting injuries.

Then, Drew Brees goes down. Who knows when he returns?

Now, and Joe would love to hear the folks who go bananas over picks with their takes on this: Matty Ice leads the NFL in interceptions. Not Jameis. Matty Ice. He has six picks, 33 percent more than Jameis.

So in a matter of weeks, could Jameis have catapulted to the top rung of quarterbacks in the NFC South?

This comment thread oughta be good

  2. OBP Says:

The biggest thing with Jameis is just that he needs to consistently play smart. I appreciate the fact that he’s not forcing things as much as we’ve seen in recent years but as a result he’s been taking a lot of unnecessary hits/sacks. If he can show good decision making the rest of the year and finish with close to a 2.5/1 TD to TO ratio then I’d be more than fine tagging him and seeing if he could do it 2 years in a row. Big if though.

  3. Mitch Says:

I think it’s telling Matt Ice leads the nfl in picks right now with and six and only had, I think, seven last season? Is that an indictment on Dirks style of offense?

  4. Jmon300@gmail.com Says:

    Definitely!!

  5. BucAllNight Says:

Matty Ice is risking it for Triskets

  7. FanO’Bucs Says:

When offense has no balance, the qb is in a tough spot.

  8. Defense Rules Says:

Why do you do this to yourself Joe? And to us? Comparing Jameis to THREE QBs who led their teams to Super Bowls. Yup, that’s the ticket.

So now Drew Brees is banged up and OUT. Cam Newton is banged up and OUT. Matt Ryan has inherited Dirk Koetter and is throwing INTs all over the place. VOILA … Jameis surges to the forefront because the other 3 horses pulled up lame? Yup, that’s the winning ticket.

How about we let Jameis be evaluated on HIS PERFORMANCE, not on others. First game wasn’t so hot (to put it mildly). Second game was better (but Jameis was neutered in the process). Third game his performance was outstanding IMO (unfortunately other parts of the team folded like a cheap suit). Not quite ready to be declared the Triple Crown winner. It’s a LOOOONG race.

  9. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Jameis has now replaced Cancer93 McCoy……….he is the loser culture cause he’s a loser QB…..a 2nd stringer who will never be a Franchise a QB….a wannabe who wants a payday day for doing nothing like Kirk Cousins……

I will be 100% Estatic! when this loser of a QB leaves this Franchise

  11. BucDan Says:

How to increase completion percentage and complete lower-risk throws?

Do exactly what Brees and Ryan do: THROW IT TO THE DAMN RUNNING BACK!

I like Winston, even if his accuracy is less than desired. However, his biggest challenge (IMO) is to put RBs in position to make a play, WITHOUT THE RB BEING THE #1 TARGET ON THE FIELD.

Fifth year and I am just waiting for him to go through progressions #1 and #2 and just drop it off to the RB, who usually has one man covering him and can gain several yards easily. I can only imagine how annoyed/pissed the RBs are when watching game film each week…

I am confident in the defense today, but good decisions will need to be made on offense.

  12. NPRSageBoy Says:

If JayMiss is now the *best QB* in the NFC South, I’m getting my affairs in order because the end of the world can’t be too far off.

  13. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

Until Brees, Ryan and Newton retire he’s the worst in the division

    Slow at making decisions
    Inaccurate
Can’t protect the ball is not winning football

Hope he turns it around with a coordinator learning on the job

  14. ocala Says:

    If only Jamies could kick

  15. BucsBandit Says:

Ryan also has 8 TDs. He also has a past track record of few INTs, something Winston does NOT have.

So yeah, Joe, keep crying and agitating those of us that harp on Winston’s INT and turnover problems. You act like it doesn’t matter that much.

The two most negative stats in football for a QB are losses and turnovers. Winston is a Champion of BOTH.

So if those don’t matter, as so many like to make excuses for him, then what DOES matter that proves he’s a good NFL QB?

  16. Wombat Says:

Jameis rises because Cam sucks more….???

  17. Dewey Selmon Says:

The same reason Jameis was a pro bowl alternate, they better players in front of him dropped out.

  18. mdsbuc Says:

I’m no math genius, but I believe Matty Ice has 50% more INTs than Winston. Winston has 33% fewer than Matty…

  19. Joseph Mamma Says:

In related news, we are three plane crashes away from being best team in the division.

  20. stpetebucsfan Says:

I have no problem with proclaiming JW as the best QB in our division at this moment.

But as usual D.R. nailed it.

“How about we let Jameis be evaluated on HIS PERFORMANCE, not on others.”

I could not agree more!!! And I mean this in the positive and negative connotation. I’m honestly unsure…I’m at perhaps 50-50 in my guess as to the odds of JW’s success. I see both sides of the debate…both sides frequently fall into absurd hyperbole both in attacking and defending JW. And sadly sometimes descend into racism which has nothing to do with the reality of performance. As a famous man once said…The die is cast…we have crossed the Rubicon for at least 2019. JW IS our QB!!!

BTW another thought on this obsession with ranking JW by comparing them to the other three. If we are doing that right now…I agree with Joe…but who freaking cares.

If JW had been better than those three in their prime (which is where JW is right now) I would be happy and impressed. But comparing him when all three are on their downsides is a meaningless metric. I would not trade for any of those three and two of them might be out of the league after this season.

I get from the JW defenders that this is not always fair. Boo freaking Hoo….EVERY QB is ultimately judged by their records.
Jeff George was an incredibly talented QB with a lot better arm than JW but I would take JW every time. George just was not a winner. Yeah I may not be JW’s fault but it is what it is!

QB’s get far far too much credit when they win…do you feel like Trent Dilfer is a stud because he won a SB? And far too much criticism when the TEAM fails.

  21. Wombat Says:

Trying to justify Jameis as improving because Cams sucks, Drew is injured and Ryan has thrown more interceptions in a 3 game stretch???
I think Jameis may be placing a restraining order on this Joe cause this love affair is going a bit too far!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Stats are like the 2016 POTUS election polls…

  23. RODNEY ALLEN Says:

Matty Ice’s has almost reached last years total in his pics Freeman is not torching teams when hes running the ball. Sounds like Déjà vu just a different team what’s the difference for them n didnt we say this had happened before for Atlanta but “this year will reveal to the sheep what real fans already know” well he was right just on the wrong narrative 🤷‍♂️

  24. Rick Says:

So the only way jameis and the bucs can be the best in the NFC South is if Cam is broken, Brees is out with injuries, and Ryan and the Falcons are in a tailspin that will result in a coach firing?
That tells you all you need right there…

  25. JL Says:

We will be drafting a Qb in next years draft!! Jake Fromm or Joe Brower..

  26. Dapostman Says:

Jameis Winston has played good the last two games with QB ratings over 100. The first game against the Niners wasn’t good mustering 10 points of offense. The Bucs should absolutely be 2-1. His kicker has missed makable FG’s the last 2 games + a PAT and his defense crapped all over itself giving up four 75+ yard drives against a rookie QB making his first NFL start. There is a lot of blame to go around for this team. Aside from a 5 game temporary epiphany in 2016 this franchise has found a way to lose in almost every way. Maybe the butt fumble is on the way. That would be the coup de gras for me.

  27. BucsBandit Says:

    Dapostman,

Let me fix that for ya…

“Jameis Winston has played good the last two games with QB ratings over 100 against two 1-2 teams, one of which was the New York Giants, currently ranked 31st in Defense.”

  28. Ndog Says:

Different thread same moronic comments, I’m shocked. You know maybe the best thing about Jameis resigning will be these people will hopefully leave so we can have some intelligent conversations about football instead of reading their incoherent 99% of the time wrong narrative. One can dream and hopefully it becomes a reality.

  32. Adrnagy Says:

After 3 weeks in. Jameis as played fair. Not great. Not bad. Fair. Football team is more solid and playing with hustle.

Rams will be a good test where we at. Solid rams team. I should expect a heavy run game to start to have the d line thinking of stopping run versus getting to the qb.

If we run the ball effectively. We win. And if the coaches don’t mess it up.

  34. Pewter power Says:

It’s about more than the quarterback. Matty ice was accurate from day one, his first pass as a pro went for a long touchdown. Newton has always had a defense always. Brees was not drafted by the saints and his career was forgettable before Sean Payton.

Winston now has the best defense he has had so far in his career and best coaching staff. At the end of this season there will be no excuses for the haters or the defenders. He is the guy or not.

  35. ATrain Says:

    ***BREAKING NEWS***

“Jameis Winston decided to stay at home with the flu during a recent Starting NFL QB expedition that took place in London, England at Wembley Stadium.

A large asteroid ripped through the atmosphere and hit Wembley Stadium, killing all 31 of the other starting NFL QBs.

JAMES WINSTON NOW RANKED AS THE #1 QB IN THE NFL.”

  37. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Adrnagy

Don’t know that I’ve seen you here before but if the last post is any indication you are more than welcome.

Thought out posts with no hyperbole or personal ad hom attacks makes you one of our posting standouts. Sadly some of us lower the bar thank you for moving it back up again.

Oh and btw I largely agree with your observations.

  38. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

So, after today and a 1-3 record, can we start talking about next year’s draft?

  39. Jean Lafitte Says:

At this point I can’t definitively say Jameis is better than Teddy Bridgewater or Kyle Allen. Bridgewater put 33 points on Seattle and Kyle Allen upset Arizona with 4 passing TD’s. Both won and looked strong through all 4 quarters.

  40. BucInCLE Says:

@BucDan- I agree he needs to be throwing to the running back more often. Unfortunately for Jameis, I saw multiple times last week where there wasn’t a dump-off/underneath option on certain plays. With this offensive line, there HAS to be an outlet somewhere. It puts the quarterback in a tough position, take a sack or force a throw. There have been a lot of questions about play calling, some of which are fair. My biggest issue has been with pass play design. If you watch Brees/Brady, they have guys underneath all day coming across the face of the linebackers. That’s why they’re able to get the ball out so fast and have higher completion percentages. It’s similar to shooting pct in basketball. Our play design seems to not set up or quarterback up for “high percentage shots”

  41. Dapostman Says:

    @Bandit,

While you are at it fix the kicking game and the defense. I’m not surprised you didn’t bring up the failures of 2/3 of the team but you singled out 1/53.

  42. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Here it is in a nutshell…plain and simple:

    JAMEIS SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKKKKKKKSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  43. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

It has to be a combination of him being a Nole, black, and his past troubles that contributes to the absolute hatred of fans in regards to Jameis. They refuse to give him credit for anything, even when he plays outstanding. Throws for 380 yards, 3 TDs, and a game winning drive (if not for a bad kicker) and they all cry “bad second half.” They ignore the defense, the kicker, and the drive. I don’t claim they are all racist or Noles fans, but at least one of those three attributes has to be in play for them because they are absolutely triggered at even the mention that he has done something well.

I hope he lights it up this afternoon and we steal a big win!

    Go Bucs!

  44. JimmyJack Says:

Listened to a podcast earier today and they mentioned a stat that Winston had a passer rating over 100 in 22 games in his career. The Bucs have lost more then half of them games. That’s freaking sad.

I bet that record does better under Bruce Arians. That would be a step in the right direction for this franchise. If you are keeping track we are 1-1 so far in those games so far this season.

  45. JimmyJack Says:

And sorry for whatever podcast that was not to mention em. I forgotten which one it was. Oops

  46. Anonymous Says:

I’ll bet anyone on this site that Winston has less touchdowns, a lower QBR, more INT , lower completion % and less wins than Ryan.
Joe- check in with me later but I bet you luted jinxed Winston, I see a 3 pick day coming for him.

  47. Ndog Says:

Jean Lafitte you want us take you seriously and you post crap like this⬇️
Bridgewater put 33 points on Seattle

If you actually know what happened you would know that the Saints first score was a punt return for a TD and their second one was a fumble recovery for a TD. So about those 33 points Bridgewater lead them to again? Dude just stop you are embarring yourself and all your clueless brothern.

  48. JimmyJack Says:

Could really use a pick-me-up to wash off the stench of that missed FG. Maybe there is something wrong with me but that loss still stings and it been a full week now.

Hope this team comes out pissed off today and will their way to victory.

Screw what these people say you can’t do. Pull a Ray’s on them and earn it the hard way!!!!

    GOOO BUCS!!!

  49. Miller5252 Says:

Besides the NFC South, is there another division that Winston would be at the top in if he was in it?

  50. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

Lol at the clowns up there that dont know what “in the division means”. If Cam now sucks and Brees is out, Jameis is now the 2nd best QB in the division. At the rate Matt Ryan is going, Jameis could definitely be the best QB IN THE DIVISION.

    It’s not hard to understand.

  58. CChead Says:

Brady throws a int in endzone. How it this possible? I thought all good QB’s never do that.

  59. Jeagan1999 Says:

For me this is easy….Winston needs to finish the season with a completion % over 64% and a minimum TD/INT ratio of 2:1, fore I would even consider signing him to a long term extension.

Anything less than the above for a 5th year starting QB who was a number 1 overall draft pick, is enough to prove to me that it’s time to move on.

  60. DB55 Says:

Don’t look now but the goat himself Thomas Brady has a 38 qbr with an Int being his sole stat.

  61. Architek79 Says:

Not taking the bait. He is a mediocre qb period.

No matter how you slice it.

  62. stpetebucsfan Says:

What has happened to the kicking game in the NFL?

Yeah we certainly have contributed to the mess but just watched the Buffalo kicker pull a makeable kick to the left. Had plenty of distance but wide left.

Extra points being missed….I’m old and still used the memories of Lou “The Toe” Groza kicking for the Cleveland Browns.

Growing up in Cincinnati our TV team was the Browns until the Bengals came into existence much like the Dolphins in Tampa before the Bucs. Groza…perhaps Tom Dempsey deserves a mention are among the last of the old traditional straight forward kickers. The Soccer kickers ended that. Alex Karras had the funny line about them…FOOTBALL players spend an hour battling for the game and then a little foreigner comes in at the last minute and kicks for the win.

Groza played in 21 seasons for the Browns, helping the team to win eight league championships in that span. Groza’s accuracy and strength as a kicker influenced the development of place-kicking as a specialty; he could kick field goals from beyond 50 yards at a time when attempts from that distance were a rarity.

Another difference for Groza was he played OT for the Browns until he got to old and had to concentrate on kicking.

Jameis Winston is garbage and it will be his last year as a buc.

If he actually does re-sign with the buc I too will concur that he’s the dumbest qb in the league.

    Yay!
That means our QB may ARGUABLY be the 3rd best QB in the NFC south!!

Yeah- Its a Bucs life for sure.

  67. GetOverIt Says:

None of this matters. Jameis blows.

  68. BucsBandit Says:

FOR ALL YOU SIMPLETON WINSTON HOMERS,

Let’s go over it one more time…

    1. Winston critics aren’t saying all QBs don’t eventually throw some INTs. They’re part of the game. They happen.

    2. Winston critics aren’t saying all QBs deserve the credit for losses even if their team lets them down.

    3. Winston critics aren’t saying all Elite QBs don’t occasionally have bad games, they certainly do.

    Here’s what we’re saying…

Jameis Winston is CONSISTENTLY BAD from a turnover perspective. He has a 4+ year track record (that’s continuing this season) with turnover problems.

    LET’S SUMMARIZE…

The Elite QBs in the league DO have bad games from time to time. Brady, Brees, Wilson, Rodgers, etc. The difference is, they have a bad game 1 out of every 5 or more games. Jameis Winston has bad games about HALF the time or at least the very best, 1 out of every 3.

BONUS TIP: The Defense, no matter how bad ours plays at times, is NOT on the field when Jameis Winston has the ball. His turnover problems, accuracy issues, holding the ball too long and killing drives with sacks, lack of Red Zone production, etc. have ZERO TO DO WITH THE DEFENSE.

    Sincerely,

    Common Sense Football Facts
