Shaq Barrett Has A Rare Quarter

September 13th, 2019

Drank Cam Newton’s Gatorade.

If Joe didn’t know any better, Joe would have thought Simeon Rice suited up for the Bucs last night.

The Bucs defense was beyond splendid. Think about it, you hold pouty Cam Newton, D.J. Moore, Greg Olson and Christian McCaffrey without a touchdown on their home turf in a division game? More than impressive.

That is outstanding!

But none was more outstanding than pass rusher/outside linebacker Shaq Barrett. He put Newton on the turf three times in the third quarter. Per T.J. Rives on the Buccaneers Radio Network postgame show, that is the first time a Bucs defender had three sacks in one quarter.

Rives did not say who that defender was.

“We stepped up and did our parts. The defense made the plays at the right time, that’s how we got the job done,” Barrett, speaking on the Buccaneers Radio Network, said. Of the final play by Hargreaves, Barrette added the Bucs said to themselves, “We didn’t want to lose. Just knuckle up and go after ’em and make a play. [Hargreaves] made an amazing play. Yeah.

“Our coaches put us in the right gameplan”

As for having the most sacks in a quarter, Barrett said, “Our backend was holding on — I mean, uugghh — having tight coverage” that allowed Barrett enough time to get to Newton.

Tight coverage, huh. Haven’t seen that in years around these parts. Thanks lovie and mike!

  2. Biggun Says:

That’s saying a lot to compare him to Simeon Rice….

  3. Rayjay1122 Says:

Such a great win! So refreshing!

  4. tmaxcon Says:

Barrett carried this high school defense to the highest level tonight…. lvd you are a complete embarrassment and vh3bust led in tackles because his sorry arse couldn’t cover the receiver he was assigned to. The midgets One lucky play because Carolina made a bad play call doesn’t offset that the midget gaytor was torched all game

  5. lambchop Says:

Shaq doing justice to #58. Kwon who? A coup d’état in FA for Jason Licht. Great signing.

  6. Mike Johnson Says:

See what a pass rush can do? Now just think if we had one Great pass rusher?
If you can consistently rush the QB you greatly improve your odds of winning.
Great Win for our Bucs. I chugged 4 shots on that last Panther drive though. Good thing I’m off today!

  7. Snook Says:

Where’s the article on McCoy and his costly penalty and missed tackles?

  8. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Barrett was a beast. Hopefully he’ll make a name for himself now. We’ve picked up too many backups to be starters in the past, and it hasn’t worked out. Hopefully he’ll “Buc” the trend.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Unsung heroes……Vita Vea, N. Suh & Will Gholston….

They clogged up the middle….our run defense gave up only 39 yards……

Pass rush was decent and we pressured Cam…..but the middle was very, very stout.

  10. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Shaq Barrett was channeling #58 Derrick Thomas tonight.
    Great Job out there tonight!

  11. Bird Says:

    Again

    Same tspaz

Hargreaves and LVD had great games
    Barret balled out
    Defense shut them down

Yo. This is 2 games and a row

  12. Rod Munch Says:

I read he had the first 3-sack quarter by a Buc since 1991.

Which made me think, who had 3 sacks in a quarter by the Bucs in 1991? The only name that came to mind was Broderick Thomas – but I don’t ever remember him doing it. Anyone know?

  13. LordCorn Says:

I was stoked on the signing but damn this guy even better than I’d thought

  14. DCBucsfan Says:

tmax.. u wrong on your assessment .. whole defense balled out tonight.. gholston, vita, carlton ,whitehead ..actually i thought after the injury to D White, LVD was gonna get the audio to call the D plays instead of Minter but listen killa Kam threw 51 times.. lets give them a credit and changing the Defensive culture that not just you but we all know about!

  15. Buc_U Says:

In 2 games this defense has only given up 1 touchdown. I think we are about to witness something special with this D. Even with the mistakes and penalties they are still playing well. Wait till it all comes together the are only going to get bette.

  16. LUVMYBUCS Says:

For minute I was like – “this brotha might get 6 or 7 sacks”.

    DCBucsfan

Injury to white saved bucs he will do far less damage on ir than on the field

  19. BucInCLE Says:

Tmax you’re wrong in your assessment of the defense who didn’t give up a TD tonight. Your sorry butt couldn’t even acknowledge that in your post. You’re a bust of a poster and an embarrassment of a fan. Let’s start evaluating your commentary the same way you evaluate this team you say you root for….

  20. ElioT Says:

    Thank you Shaq!

    Thank you Bucs defense!

No more fake leadership and weak mentality by the old #93.

Screw “just having fun”, go out there and continue to punch every offense right in the mouth!!

This was a Hell of a game folks.

    Go Bucs!

  21. DCBucsfan Says:

give him a break.. lol even Bond made a behind the scrimmage line earlier in the game.. Tmax, going into the season the biggest question was the defense.. even with the loss vs 49ers, i saw the defensive scheme wayyy, light years better with the new scheme.. as one commenter mentioned it on the game thread (forgot his name) the fact that Bucs defense were able to get off the field after 3rd downs yet alone 4th is something to build on.. let the past go!!!

  22. Buccinutz15 Says:

D looked awesome tonight aside from a handful of plays. When you’re bringing that much heat, bound to give up a few. Offense still needs to clean up the penalties. Was the 3 sack Buc in 1991 Santana Dotson? I thought I remember him doing it in Brett Favre’s first game.

  23. DCBucsfan Says:

@LUVMYBUCS, long time.. hope all is well sir! yeah the NFL community lost a great one..including Steve Mcnair..

  24. Gettinthebucs Says:

Great pick up by the team. I’m sure Bowles had some heavy input on that signing.

  25. January1979 Says:

DCBucaFab you’re wasting your breath debating with tmax. I honestly don’t understand why he comes to this site. Poor guy just seems so sad, I honestly feel for him. I, on the other hand thought the whole team put in a solid if flawed effort in subpar conditions. And Jameis does what he normally does after a bad start and balled out. If our receivers hd pulled in those two end zone passes the game could’ve been a blowout. As is I think it says a lot for our guys to persevere there at the end. Well done team!

  26. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @DCBucsfan

    Blessings brotha.
    Man it’s been a long-time since we’ve talked.
    Remembering our Old TBO days.

Hope everything going good for your family as well brotha.

We’ve lost so many over the years.

  27. FortMyersDave Says:

@ Gettinthebucs: yeah I agree. You can bet Elway wishes they had him on Monday Night when Carr went 22 for 25 on Denver’s D which did not have a sack, knockdown or pressure, it was like Mike Smith is the DC for the Broncos and also the Dolphins for that matter! Elway is turning Denver into Cleveland West…..

  28. DCBucsfan Says:

I hardly post but why am I being “moderated” ?? and yet certain things go thru? unbelievable! Steve, Lee remind your site editors from delaying this nonsense delaying comments .. for all you know we could be interacting among other fans about the game..which at the end build up your revenue.. not the first time ..

  29. Rod Munch Says:

Buccinutz15 – Dotson is a good name, but he didn’t come in until 1992.

I had to go look it up since it’s bugging me.

A quick look – Broderick Thomas has 174 tackles and 11 sacks that year – and he didn’t even get so much as a Pro-Bowl invite, really what worse s$@t. From what I saw he only had 2 sacks in a single game.

Anywho, going through the game logs – there isn’t anyone that had 3 sacks in a game for the Bucs – so that stat is bonk.

But wow, against the Bucs there’s a ton of them that year. But wow, looking in the stats, Pepper Johnson of the Giants and Bryce Paup of the Packers both had 4.5 sacks against the Bucs in one game.

  30. DCBucsfan Says:

@Luvmybucs.. yes sir.. hope is well! little disappointed on how randomly this site been delaying my comment.. u know me damn well I m immune to the negative backlash .. but yeah we haven’t seen bucs good D awhile! 51 att throws dawg!

  31. DCBucsfan Says:

@Luvmybucs! do you remember them rednecks that were against the Raheem calling him “Radio” and his chest bumps and nothing else to talk about week by week? lol at least one ring leader poster (forgot his name) wanted Eddie Bartelo former 49ers owner retiree) to take over to save the team from the Glazers! lol

  32. DCBucsfan Says:

@Jan1979, when you beloved team that you root for have been in a loosing column for over a decade and u re in public forum nowadays , what do you expect? so you re right. At the same time you have ones that have a hope and embrace a change and dwell on the lingering team issues to mock the team and fans and ones to say the proof is in the pudding.. so really posters like Tmax and very knowledgeable negative posters will either embrace the team or then I ll ignore them being labeled as attention seekers.. that’s all!

  33. Silent_Partner Says:

I think I told you in the off-season that this is how the Bowles defense works. It’s beautiful poetry.

  34. BA FAN Says:

Our D is back to Greatness like we used to have for ten years that led the way to a Super Bowl Win! Fix our OL and we can contend for another Super Bowl.
Now we have extra time to get ready for the Giants. I watched them this year play very tough before losing to the Cowboys. They have a Super RB but we have a Super D that can stop any team’s running game and make them one dimensional and then pound their passing game by repeatedly sacking their QB. Now I can’t wait til we take on the Saints. Vea has the power to push the Saints new Center right back into their QBs face getting him off his spot in time for Barret to jar him to the ground along with Nassib. This is a NEW DAY for Tampa Bay! Thanks BA. Now the Panthers can join Atlanta in the basement! Good thing the whole country got to FEAR the New Bucs under BA! You Haters need to apologize to Licht for all your past slanderous statements !

  35. Too Funny Says:

I was on Wikipedia wanting to learn about Shaquil Barrett and some one has edited his bio to say “He is the father of late NFL quarterback, Cam Newton, who died due to pressure in the pocket and being sacked 3 times”

  36. Bucsfanman Says:

Been saying for 3years the problem was coaching and scheme not talent and players….

I really like what I saw from the defense.

But let’s not get to high on them yet, Cam also played awful. He had some terrible misses to wide open receivers.
