Rusty Start

September 9th, 2019

Waiting.

So aside from going for it on fourth-and-two deep inside San Francisco’s territory, where was this no-risk-it-no-biscuit offense?

Of course, a team likely won’t be hitting big plays when the quarterback is having one of his worst games in his not-that-short time in the NFL. But Albert Breer seemed to be asking “Where is the big play we were promised?” when he typed the following excerpt into his “Monday Morning Quarterback” column for the site he captains, theMMQB.com.

And Bruce Arians’ big-play scheme created just one play of more than 20 yards all afternoon against the Niners.

Let’s be honest here: Did the 49ers defense remotely look like the 2002 Bucs’? They had a pass rush; that’s pretty much it (though that can hide a lot of warts).

But yeah, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, was awful from the start. Go ahead and scroll through Joe’s timeline and you will see early in the first quarter Joe wrote “Bad Jameis today.” Of course, even though Joe was right, Joe got flamed for that.

But it is true. One can usually tell if Jameis is going to have a good game or not by how he is throwing early. And Jameis was simply off-target with his throws early. Badly.

And it only got worse.

    Rusty ?
more like La Brea Tar Pits

  2. doctor_berto Says:

Nothing on Devin White? I get it was his first game but he looked very slow and ordinary. This team desperately needs outside pass rush too.

  3. Buc1987 Says:

Perhaps the QB whisperer needs to stop whispering and start hollering?

I’m not worried about Winston yet.

It was only week 1 and I saw plenty of other decent QB’s have crappy games yesterday. One commentator even stated that some offenses (players) aren’t ready for week 1 and it shows dues to lack of pre-season play.

Not saying that’s an “excuse”. Just saying I’m not worried yet.

    Go Bucs!

    Go Winston!

  4. Buddy Says:

How long til the “health” excuses start?
Quarterback whisperer who’s never won a championship as as HC.
    0-1 and counting….

  5. Jim Says:

Well, we should mention there were several long balls thrown, but (nearly?) all were either badly thrown or thrown into coverage. Those would be your “explosive” plays…

  6. Defense Rules Says:

Kinda wonder if BA is rethinking his approach here in Tampa Bay (or even taking the job at all). Handing the keys to Byron MAY have been short-sighted. Doing away with any real competition for starting QB MAY also have been a mistake. Not doing anything to beef up our OLine MIGHT also be circumspect. We’ll find out more come Thursday night.

  7. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Have not heard it brought up because it really didn’t matter but HOW in the HELL was that not pass interference at the end of the game ? DB never looked back, face guarding, basically a prolonged mauling of Mike Evans…oh well

  8. Lou. Says:

On the plus side, looks like the Bucs have a RT. Even on the 2nd isn’t it looked like Cappa blocked his man towards the outside, then spun away and headed upfield to block the screen. Most of the rest of the time he seemed competent and physical. Maybe Arians knew what he was talking about.

On the minus side, both OTs. What a disaster. Dotson didn’t do his job but then neither did the TE next to him.

And, finally, #3. It wasn’t pressure or coverage. It was bad throws and worse decision making.

    A long season looms.

  9. Buc1987 Says:

Has anyone complained about OJ Howard yet?

  10. Figures Says:

Where all the 11-5 and playoffs idiots at?

    Yea eating crow huh?

This team is terrible in every way.
Be lucky to win 5 games.
Different year Sam ol sh it.

And you idiot morons saying it’s only game. Stfu you idiots.
Have you seen the last 4 years?
    Same crap.

We paid for Arians not sorry as s Leftwich.

    Playoffs? Hahahahahahahahahaha hilarious

    @Buc1987

I am not worried either!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Though I predicted and said exactly what would happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now we just need to hear about a silver alert for a golf cart and then we can fire light weight and move on with the total rebuild!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Didn’t think it would be week 1 though.

4+ years of the same boneheaded stupid plays and mistakes.

    @rod and Ndog
Stfu both you look like complete and utter morons that blindly support and do nothing but make excuses for Winston’s abhorrent play. Yea good luck defending what happened yesterday you idiots.

And come Thursday will be another beat down.

He’ll probably have atleast 2 picks.

  20. NPRSageBoy Says:

Joe – please cut out the JayMiss cheerleading and the America’s QB BS. He’s well past his honeymoon period here and the false praise insults the rest of us.

It appears that both “can’t miss” QB prospects from the 2015 draft didn’t turn out as advertised. What’s to make us think, given the current braintrust running this broken down franchise, that 2020 QBs will fair any better?

Two more starts, then give us RG4.

  21. Figures Says:

    Ndog

Stfu. We’ve heard enough of your bullsh it.

  22. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ Figures

    Don’t feed Rod Munch or Ndog….. <———-(trolls)

…..this is what they want and they're just as clueless as Jameis is on the field

  23. Pittsshore Says:

I just watched the Monday morning Arians presser. I highly doubt he will make it through this season. He sounded very weak/frail. For a second, I thought I was listening to Sleepy Joe Biden at the mic. I wonder what type of medical leave plan the Bucs have in place.

  24. 941bucsfan Says:

What Joe and other fans are failing to talk about is the playcalling!! Who in the hell calls a screen backed up in your own endzone against a team that hasnt blitzed you all game????. And take a look at that intentional grounding play. 1 man was on a route. ONE MAN. Cam Brate. Where was Evans, godwin, howard? I seen way too many max protect 1 and 2 man routes today.. Sure jameis had time but they got 7 in coverage on 2 receivers repeatedly! You guys gave dirk koetter hell for play calling at times and rightfully so. Dont go all soft now on BA and Leftwich. Jameis made some dumb a** plays no doubt about it. But we also was outcoached, BA max protected all day long with tight ends that cant block.. And NOT ONE fade route in the redzone to godwin, howard, evans or Brate???? I seen BA do a hell of a lot more with LESS. Time for him to get off the golf cart and step his damn game up too! He coaching like he already got the hall of fame in the bag!

  25. Todd Says:

The fact Richard Sherman had hands on Mike Evans the entire game should at least manifest into a positive.

Like him picking up the flu!

  26. D-Rome Says:

Ndog, Rod, Todd, and the rest of the totally confident mouth breathers (they are all probably the same person that change their IP address) are all going to have new screen names when the Bucs either trade or refuse to extend Jay-Miss to a big money contract. If he’s not playing like a 5th year, $20 million a year player there’s no way the Bucs should give him the kind of money Wentz, Goff, and Dak have received (or are about to).

  27. Buc1987 Says:

I hope Winston has a great game Thursday.

    Go Bucs!

  28. JimmyJack Says:

It was one game five years ago. Winston is not getting better he is getting worse. This guy is literally just throwing the ball in the air. He is pathetic at this point and is actively holding the team back by blowing games. There aren’t enough games to fooling around anymore and this crap isn’t funny no more.

Im not going to write the book on this season based on one game but the problem for me is now when is this guy going to play absolutely pathetic again and lose us more games? He has been way too inconsistent to think he won’t keep reverting back to BS games like yesterday. It really seems hopeless with this guy. He’s got a long way to go to win back my trust and I don’t think he is good enough to do it. How could I?

  29. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

You pay for Arians yet you get Leftwich, his offenses averages 13 a game Bucs o scores 10…

All these weapons and Arians protege scores 10…

Other teams with new coaches looked much better than this offense and were playing better competition

  30. JimmyJack Says:

87…….I hope Winston has a string of good games starting Thursday. One good game won’t move the needle much for me. Not at this point.

  31. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

I think BA’s goatee intimidates Jameis

  32. pelbuc Says:

After this month it will become quite apparent that BA and Licht conned the Glazers and stiffed the fans. BA will develop another health issue and he’ll hand the reigns over to one of the assistant coaches, the Glazers will not want to pay for 2 GMs so we’re stuck with incompetent Licht for several more years, and the defense will stop playing hard after their 0-4 start. Until Licht and JW are gone, nothing will change. At least the Dolphins knew the roster they had and traded for the future. Trade OJ,and JW (for whatever you can get) and get some Olinemen and Dlinemen for the future!

  33. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

I have been a Bucs fan for a LOT of years, no, decades. I have supported Winston, until NOW. He SUCKS. What we saw yesterday is who JW is. As Joe says, Bad Jameis, Good Jameis. One never knows.

What a total abomination! But at least it was a team effort; Jameis, OJ, Dotson, even ME. #5 in the draft? 5 Tackles. Lets get excited!! No more…

  34. JimmyJack Says:

And figures I said 11-5. So what? Yep I ate crow all day today. What are you taking some kind of twisted pleasure in it trying to rub my face in it and call names like a baby? You’re a cool fan dude.

And you are just as wrong saying we are a bad team in every way. Difference is some are man enough to admitt they wrong. Others not so much.

Have fun making fun of other(felliw) fans all day. I wager any true fan feels no pleasure today.

  35. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

941….100%…that playcalling was terrible…can we please see a guy running deep down the seam and at least throw the ball or to the post. Why is peyton barber out wide when the bucs have allegedly 2 TEs that I have been told are elite? Or Godwin who I am continually told is going to be elite. Why is #44 in the game for a screen. Can the 2nd round draft pick RB not catch….fire licht….also where is nos bos…he told me that the bucs would be having a defense and offense never seen in these parts….byron wants you to hold his beer…

  36. Tye Says:

JW is in his 5th year. How much more of this pathetic attempt to keep him must be endure… You know who didn’t look ‘rusty’:

    Kyler Murray
    Josh Allen
    Lamar Jackson
    Patrick Mahomes
    Jared Goff
    Carson Wentz
    Marcus Mariota

all 1st round draft picks since the Bucs made their colossal mistake of dafting him..

Even Gardner Menshew (6 round pick) and Jacoby Brissett (3rd rp) looked better!

  37. JimmyJack Says:

Bruce has been here for one game and some fans are basically calling him a liar and a quitter. I’ve heard this crap from several posters and it is based on absolutely nothing.

Some freaking wierd people out there.

  38. Pryda...sec147 Says:

  43. JimbobBucsFan Says:

It is early in the “new and revitalized” Bruce Arians regime.  We have a guy who is getting his feet on the ground with his new delegation style vs his previous hands on approach.  The “no risk it, no biscuit” guy has to channel through others now as his heart won’t let him be his younger self.

It’s the same mind, the same approach, and the same person, only with a different execution.  It should be fun to see how the season progresses after this inauspicious result for our first game for general football watchers.  A winning season is the only thing that will be fun in the end for most fans.

  44. Destinjohnny Says:

    Jason will fix it all!
    Wait no he won’t

  45. Ptwalk Says:

We’ll go and get that Carolina game and start from there. It’s funny how one game can make people think the sky is falling. I believe they’ll look better Thursday night, and win.

  46. Destinjohnny Says:

    Fire the GM

  48. T REX Says:

ndog with his tail between his legs. Posting the same thing over and over. Punk!

  49. Chosen One Says:

We can’t have big plays with a QB that can’t hit a deep ball. BA knows that. The game plan was catered to Jameis’ strength and he still sh!t all over himself.

It’s not BAs fault Jameis sucks at anything deeper than 20 yards. Desean Jackson gets instant chemistry with every QB he’s played with except one.

Who feels excited when the ball is in the air from a Jameis bomb? I sure as sht don’t. It’s anxiety every time.

  50. JimmyJack Says:

Jimbo I appreciate you trying to bring some hope to the table but I fail to see how the new system could have that type of a effect on Winston.

Winston is just blindly throwing the ball into the air. Absolute panic tosses in senseless situations. Five year veteran QBs cannot be making mistakes like that all the time. It’s just not good enough. Winston has not shown the ability to play any better then he did yesterday on a consistent level. It’s been the same in every system. It’s not a technical problem it’s a mental problem.

The hope was that the QB whisperer could fix these mental breakdowns and maybe he still can. But after 4 months of training I defientally expected to see at least some signs of positive results. Guess we will just see what happens but there is nothing tangible to be hopeful for at this point.

  51. SenileSenior Says:

I forecast a 9-7 season for us.  I had high hopes for Winston this year also.  I like JimmyJack ate some crow also.  However, I will only truly eat crow at the end if we go 8-8 or 6-10 or something along those lines.

Meanwhile, I will be pulling for the Bucs in every game, one at a time.   I will support the team with or without Jameis out there.

  52. JimmyJack Says:

Ptwalk…..Good point the sky is not falling. From where we were the revamping of our defense is basically amazing. I really can’t wait to see how they look against a dangerous Carolina team. I am very optimistic that they can slow them down too.

It’s a shame the defense is going overlooked cause the QB is stealing the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. But that life in the NFL. QBs tend to do that.

But mostly it all boils down to losing. This fanbase has endured more losing then is fair. It is near unbearable.

  53. JimmyJack Says:

I only ate some of my crow. I refused to finish the plate. This is sports and are nearly unpredictable. I will finish my crow when the fat lady sings.

  54. DoooshLaRue Says:

All you nut huggers saying ” it’s just one game”.. …. yeah, right.
If your boy somehow would have managed to light it up you’d be saying how you all were right and we’re all a bunch of idiots.

    Thursday WILL be a disaster.

Oh, but then it will ” only be two games and calm down” RIGHT?

  55. JimmyJack Says:

After that game I will go back to goo Bucs. They do not deserve to have it said properly. Maybe one day they will earn 5 O’s.

Until then let the Bucs get good first and then we can be great.

    GOO BUCS!!!!

  56. Pittsshore Says:

    7.3 QBR.

  57. Ndog Says:

One game fellas one game. Just calm down we will know more in a few weeks then we can go all “burn it to the ground” if you would like. Remember this is supposed to be fun not just constant anger unless that’s who you are. And yes we all know who YOU are by your daily comments.

  58. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The great Josh Allen had 1 solo tackle for the Jags…..so don’t whine about White’s 5….

Now….the playcalliing….I don’t have an issue because the breakdown was mostly execution an very poor judgement from Jameis.
When Rojo got the hot hand….Leftwich went with him….I do question us trying to run in the red zone….didn’t work under Koetter either.
As far as going for the TD on 4th & 2…..I believe, again….right call…poor execution.
Jameis doesn’t seem to see the field well…..and this isn’t the first time.

  59. volbuc1 Says:

    Rusty??? not even close JOE!

  60. Ndog Says:

Brand new offense for the entire offense which all struggled outside of ROJO and Marpet. Everyone else looked like they were thinking too much which causes issues but I know that is hard for some to understand so it’s ok.

  61. volbuc1 Says:

one game fellas one game. Just calm down we will know more in a few weeks then we can go all “burn it to the ground” if you would like.

REally NDOG??? your at home playing San Fran after having all year to prepare. REally??? Give me a break! This coach will be worst than Raheem Morris. Just watch!

  62. 941bucsfan Says:

I can tell you guys who screamed for a new coach, have too much pride to blame arians or leftwich for failing to get this offense “san fran ready”. Arians AINT NO QB WHISPERER! He coaches guys that were gonna be hall of famers with or without him. Only a matter of time before “health issues” force him away from the team

  63. Buczilla Says:

When your franchise qb is responsible for 5 turnovers and could have easily had more, you aren’t going to win many games. I hope Winston puts it together, but it looks like draft season is starting early yet again. I can’t help but think that if Vinny Testeverde had the kind of talent on offense that Jameis does, he would have been the better player. Pretty sad.

  64. Buc1987 Says:

    It’s the day after Ndog.

    Next up Carolina.

In my mind I’m gone to Carolina
    Can’t you see the sunshine?
Can’t you just feel the moonshine?
Ain’t it just like a friend of mine
    To hit me from behind?
Yes, I’m gone to Carolina in my mind

    -James Taylor

  65. lambchop Says:

Even a hampster works hard. But it doesn’t actually go anywhere. We need a real QB who doesn’t just talk, comes early and stays late, but just friggin wills his team to win – consistently. He’s a freakin weekday warrior – when it doesn’t count.

The amount of effort Jameis puts in 6 days a week, you’d think he’d be at least the 2nd best QB in the division. He just doesn’t have IT. I’m gracious when I compare him to Alex Smith; he shows up once in a while but not substantially.

That 49ers team was beatable. I thought Juice had a subpar game. Cappa got owned 2 downs in a row, but did well overall. Todd Bowles is a revelation. To get that kind of production out of that defense is mind boggling. MJ Stewart is a liability in pass coverage. No, really? Devin White is too busy running the defense, but still had some plays. A lot of of what Devin White did won’t show up on the stat sheet. Plus, most people forget he was not healthy. I’m hopeful he starts to fly soon as he gets his feet wet. Vita Vea is velcro again, but he’s not in football shape yet. So, hopefully he’ll get him some. I just hope he doesn’t end up being an injury prone player that is always trying to get in football shape. Shaq Barrett showed up. Gholston was refreshingly active and disruptive. Donkey Kong is a beast and > GMC-ya. Mike Evens was obviously ailing. Godwin is Mr. consistent and reliable. Perriman was pedestrian. Ro-fuqing-Jo flashed. He has arrived. Let’s see him build on game 1 and get his hundy soon. Cam Brate got robbed of 2 TDs that may have over come 3’s paltry play. Byron Leftwich’s play calling wasn’t all that bad. Had he had a competent QB, he would have looked better. The OL did well. D. Smith gave up 3/4 into a block and let Bosa get his first sack. Surprise surprise. Ali Marpet getting in Kwon’s grill for the helmet to helmet was awesome, but I expected to see that from Ryan Jensen. RJ had a good game too.

And lastly, Jameis is mostly horrible trying to play catch up. He plays sandlot football when the team is behind and he starts free stylin. He almost had a fumble for a loss but I won’t pin that on him, except that he needs to run more to keep drives alive.

  66. Sapp, STFU Says:

Perhaps we can see what Ryan Griffin can do while we are still in playoff contention.

  67. DoooshLaRue Says:

Hey, ndog says it’s ok……so just relax everyone!

  68. Ndog Says:

BTW as I said last night Barber was at fault for the second pick. If you still think I am wrong please see the exact quote from the head coach today:

“After a looking at the film the biggest problem with the interception for the touchdown was Peyton was about three yards too deep on his route,” Arians said.”Last night I thought he was fine, but he was too deep, the ball was thrown perfectly. Mike [Evans] missed his hot [route], Jameis executed the play perfectly, the other guys let him down.

So as usual all that yelling from Figures and several others is proven foolhearty and yet again I am proven CORRECT!

  69. DoooshLaRue Says:

Good God….87 is a James Taylor fan?
    I understand now.

  70. DoooshLaRue Says:

Yeah ndog……you keep being right while we keep losing.

    Genius

  71. Anonymous Says:

The Jameis Winston Love Clowns don’t get it. Then question is not whether Winston will not get an extension. That is the DEFAULT POSITION of Bucs owners at this moment. That is, right now, Winston is NOT coming back in 2020. Got it? Nothing else happening, he is not a Buc after this season. Bruce Arians already is not the strategic decision maker as is. And his relevence gets smaller with every loss. He is an ant to the Glazers when they are 2-6.

The real question is when will the Glazers confirm what their position is? Winston does not have 15 games to show anything. Try about 8 or less to confirm what they already know.

    Bench him? No need.

Gee, pay 30% of my salary cap to QB who has been a millstone, nothing positive since late 2016? Or let him be himself and send himself packing?

  72. Couch Fan Says:

I had to be brutally honest with myself last night after watching the game. Yes the offense had big problems yesterday. Not just Jameis. Everything that we’ve been saying this team needed to do better, they did better. Defense, special teams and run game. But the 1 thing that stuck out to me again, is that Jameis was inaccurate right from the very 1st throw. This is starting to become far to common for a #1 pick and Franchise QB. I dont enjoy losing and it hurts me to say it but it is starting to appear like Jameis has issues that cant be fixed. Prove me wrong Bruce. Im a very sad Buc fan today.

  73. Buc1987 Says:

Doosh …Ndog doesn’t call the shots at One Buc…neither do you.

    Relax!

  74. Ndog Says:

All I’m saying is blame the QB, heck cut him but nothing will change with the same mistakes around him. This is not the NBA or MLB where one guy can do it alone. QBs need players to run the correct routes and catch the ball and vice versa but all anyone wants to do is yell at the QB cause they are clueless about the game. The second I saw the reply I knew he went to deep and guess what Sherman knew the depth it should have been run as well why do you think he was at that exact spot, but if Barber runs it correctly it hits him right in the chest for 5-6 yards which is all a QB can do which is his job.

  75. Bird Says:

    Ndog

You don’t think arians is playing psychologist ?
    Putting blame elsewhere ?
Cause let’s face it , Fitzpatrick got in Jameis head

    And just FYI
Jameis threw a pass right to 49ers linebacker who dropped easy pick should have been 4

But your right …you are always right …
You watch the game with your own 2 eyes
Dude. Coulldnt even throw for 200 yards
I was at game -4 rows off field so had perfect view
Jameis looked like he never played football before
    Plan horrible

But watch when he has his good game …cause he will …you will be hollering …and then he is bad games and again will blame others

The human roller coaster to this point
    Consistently inconsistent

  76. Ndog Says:

Bird that explains a lot you can’t see crap from 4 yards from the field. Dude from that angle you see more on the bench than you do on the field. Since you couldn’t see anything let me help you basically no one was open all day, OJ fumbled away 3 points, OJ dropped a pass that resulted in a pick, Dare blew a punt block that resulted in us getting a punt blocked, Barber ran a crappy route that caused a pick 6, ROJO ran great, Dotson got called for two holding calls that cost us 14 points, Jameis should have found a way to throw the ball away even though Dare ran a horrible screen route. There now you actually know what happened since your vantage point isn’t all that great, you’re welcome.

  77. T REX Says:

ndog, you are being a little a PUNK. Eat your crow like a man. Disappointed in you. You talked a lot of smack. Now own it like a man.

  78. Bird Says:

    Ndog

You thought you went to all the games . Never missed one ..what a liar. You were watching from tv then since my view sucked

20-36 for 194 yards 1 td and 3 picks (should have been 4)
    2 fumbles and 8.6 qbr

Yah your view was great. He was fantastic . You were Watching thru them FSU shades I guess
    😂

    I am dying laughing.

  79. Cannon Says:

There really isn’t any way a rational fan can defend Jameis.

Regardless of whether or not routes were ran correctly, the guy looked completely lost, and every single pass was ugly.

Fortunately, we look like we may have a defense and a ground game. Those two elements are something that can be built upon.

NDog is part of JWs posse. Tread lightly with him or he might just take his favorite stripper from you.

I hope Devin White is good
I hope all those corners we drafted pan out

But damn, watching the same subpar offensive linemEN and the lazy and just plain below average D. Smith trot out there yet again…????

I can’t help but wonder what this team would look like if they’d drafted some o-line with those premium picks and hell, maybe even signed one free agent OL as well.

Excellent post in the description of posters who come to a fan site to gloat and say I told you so! It’s especially “ADMIRABLE” when you head to the fan site during one of the worst days of the year for the team’s fan.

What kind of dik does this? These are the kind of guys who if the team gets good would love coming here saying “I told you so” when the team loses in the playoffs. The “I told you so crowd” gets their rocks off on a team’s fans suffering.

I used to get angry…now I just grow sad. Imagine what kind of pathetic life you must have if you need to get pleasure from tormenting a team’s fans when they are down. And catch them at their worst…like after JW’s performance yesterday…and you get to feel even better. Just pathetic.

NDog: I figured you out bro. I googled NDog and it came back with National Dutch Oven Gathering, which is a yearly event. I strongly recommend that you raise the sheets every once in a while cuz that gas is killing your brain cells!

Hollywood should contact the Bucs for advice on its next sequel to, Edge of TMW with Tom cruise stuck in that bad repeating time loop. That’s us guys..Yr after Yr.
Bucs have been tied to the.Whipping Post for almost 12 yrs without a playoff appearance. This yr probably will be no different. I’ve noticed a lot of guys who posted here for a few yrs are gone now. Can’t blame’em. It’s hard to keep faith in a consistent loser. I stay here because I accept our fate…And I guzzle on Sundays to get numb.
