Resilient Matt Gay

September 29th, 2019

Matt Gay went from goat to stud in one week.

There’s little more to say. Gay shook off a brutal game last week that might have sent a lesser kicker to a mental institution and drilled a 58-yard field goal today, in addition to another field goal and seven extra points in seven tries. Seven!

That’s a tough kicker, or at least one with a lot more toughness than Tampa Bay kickers have displayed in recent years.

Joe expects more ups and downs from Gay (yeah, Joe saw the missed extra point that was called back). Hopefully, he’s matured from all the experience he’s gotten through the first four games, in addition to his busy preseason. If you add it up and really study it, it truly has been a lot of experience for a rookie.

The way the Bucs defense is playing, the Bucs are certainly going to need him.

You don’t get to claim any victory when you cost your team a win the previous week.

It was nice he didn’t screw up today, but that’s the best I’d say about him.

  2. I’m a Gay Believer Says:

I couldn’t be more proud of my handsome man!
    Signed
    Lorenzo

  3. reply Says:

I still do not trust him. Jameis has made up for his week 1 collapse but kickers will never ever earn my trust again. They cannot be relied on no matter what level of football they play on.

  4. 541 BucsFan Says:

Great job! Hit another 7 next week.

  5. MadMax Says:

He rebounded…..that first extra point off the upright scared me though, then the miss that was called back and he redeemed himself. Dare I say we might just need to carry two kickers. We know he’s money for the long ones, so get someone else for the short ones, or another member of the team, punter maybe….i dont know.

  6. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

If the Bucs are patient with him, Matt Gay could be the kicker they have been looking for by next year…maybe sooner. Fans need to be patient too.

And I’m not just saying that because we won. I said close to the same thing after last weeks loss.

  7. Used to it Says:

Well he did change his shoes after the first extra point

  8. stpetebucsfan Says:

Agree Joe. People wanted to dump ROJO last year how big of a mistake would that have been. Now they don’t wish to give another player a kicker a reasonable chance. A bad game three games into his career when his entire team around him is choking lets put that on all him and run him.

An unrelated rant…did you see the empty seats in the Coliseum?
LA has just under 13 million in their metro. Tampa/St.Pete 3 million.

They have FOUR times as many prospective fans as us but all I read his how bad our fans are because we don’t show up. This was an undefeated SB team and their fans couldn’t show support?

Guilty pleasure…hearing the announcers say how Talib was “abused” by our receivers…he coughed up two TD’s one to Brate and the may all time favorite…Godwin just TRUCKED Talib and ran over him. Announcers pointed out how Weddle and RAms coaches couldn’t be happy with that effort. I guess he’s a lot meaner when it’s a defenseless cabbie.

    Reply and Rodney

Give it a freakin’ break!! This is a young guy who was absolutely vilified for an entire week, and he comes back and nails 7 extra points and 2 FG’s…His 58yarder would have been good from 68. Dude showed some serious stones today and he should be congratulated and you should have at least a modicum of of confidence moving forward! Hell yeah to our kicker!!!!

  10. cmurda Says:

Let’s hope the consistency comes. He can’t miss the short xp’s and FG’s and hit the long ones. That’s not good enough. That said, I agree that it was a big rebound game. The first xp flirting with the left post and the missed xp can’t be ignored. Just hope to see his confidence and game go forward because we will need him again.

  11. PanthersSuck! Says:

WTF is wrong with you people??? ^^^
I swear we have some $hitty, negative fans. You guys bashing the Bucs and our kicker should be ashamed! Punks! I bet you cowards wouldn’t say one negative word to these players in person.
How about you just say “good win boys! You just beat the best team in the NFL in their house!!!”

Good job Bucs! I’m proud of all of you guys. Enjoy this win!

  12. Rick Says:

Good news is he doesn’t accept a loser/victim mentality. That sort of mentality can cost a team wins in the clutch. All the Bucs previous kickers, after a miss, would just rack up misses. Glad to see he won’t take failure for an answer. If anything, this guy can be just what this team needs to start believing that they can comeback after mistakes.

  13. buc15 Says:

Told all you fair weather fans to chill. Everyone has a bad day at some point. We found our kicker finally.

  14. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

“seven extra points in seven tries. Seven!”

Seven extra points in eight tries. Eight!

He never hit the upright, he hit the wind indicator flag.

    Fake news!

  15. mark2001 Says:

Accurate Joe… the life of a kicker…every time he steps on the field in game circumstances, there are points on the line. When he makes a kick in most cases, it is assumed to be a given…when he misses one, they always come back to the trite phrase “it usually comes back to haunt you”. Even the best sometimes have a clunker. It happens. He certainly has the leg… hope he can keep improving the consistency.

  16. 813bucboi Says:

And dirk couldn’t out score MM!!!!!!LOL…..

    GO BUCS

  17. Ndog Says:

Just like Jameis, Rojo, Cappa and several others it really does matter if your coach believes in you and shows it by action not empty words. Who would have thunk it?

  18. BuccaneEric75 Says:

After missing the game winning FG last week, he could have gone mental. Instead, he had a great game. He might be the guy. Props to Gay for not hearing the noise. Great bounce back game.

  19. mark2001 Says:

Agree Ndog…it isn’t just a ‘coincidence’ that all these guys so many were calling “busts” the last year or two are having good years and erasing all that foolish talk. And for those that think these guys are pros and coaching doesn’t make a difference…newsflash… it certainly does.

  20. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Props to ndog for never giving up…regardless or all the hate directed at him.

  21. Buc1987 Says:

Make that easy FG last week and the Bucs are 3-1 and the talk of the NFL….

  22. Pelbuc61 Says:

Regardless, he cost Bucs a win last week.

  23. Jean Lafitte Says:

He’s certainly a weapon at distance

  24. Rodney Munch Says:

You don’t have one game where you do what you’re expected to do and then claim victory… the guy cost the team a victory – they should be 3-1 right now, instead they’re 2-2. For as bad as Roberto was he made all his game winning attempts.

If he won the game with a 58 yarder, then yes, that would cancel it out and he’d be even, but he just did his job today. You don’t get to cancel out a loss by just doing your job.

I hope he felt the heat all week – because if he did, and he did his job today, then that’s a lot better than “not listening” to the heat.

    Anywho I didn’t call him a bust, you literally can’t be a bust as a 5th rounder.

  25. Stanglassman Says:

Bruce did the right thing standing by his kicker and instilling confidence in him. I’ve kicked with coaches that have done that for me when I’ve had a bad game and bounced back to have a really good season. I’ve also had a coach who showed no confidence in me. It didn’t turn out well.

Why’s it taking so long for BAs post game presser to go up on the Bucs site?

  26. Tampabaybucfan Says:

When he hits 7 extra points, we know we have scored at least 49….I’ll take that

  27. DB55 Says:

The kid makes 58 yarders like they’re chip shots. 🤣🤣🤣. With room to spare. Easily makes a 62 yarder. Easily.

  28. Buc1987 Says:

Of course I agree with you Rod.

He hasn’t redeemed himself by far.

  29. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Munch it must kill you each time the Bucs win. Sleep poorly tonight.

  30. BuccaneEric75 Says:

87, I disagree with Rob. Gay could have gone mental after last week, but he didn’t. He’s confident, and that bodes well for him. I think Arians shenanigans setting up the FG played a big part in his miss.

  31. Glazers Suck Says:

Hey Joe can you ask why in the 4th quarter is JW snapping the ball consistently at the 17 second mark on play clock? If we’re running the clock why not snap at 1 to 2 seconds. All the good offenses back to Payton always would milk the play clock even in first quarter. Time of possession is a big deal we’re not running a hurry up offense. Seems the coaches have missed this.

  32. CanuckBuc Says:

What im seeing from the kicker is the nfl-maturity process. Just like
We give wr, qbs, dl, etc ,etc time to develop and adjust we need to give this guy some time. I admit i was heartbroken and angry last week but, he rebounded this week.

  33. Tbbucs3 Says:

Gay is still the reason we’re 2-2 and not 3-1 so let’s not butter him up yet. Still a lot of football to be played.

  34. Buc1987 Says:

BuccaneEric75…it’s a long season. We’ll see what he’s got but I’m still feeling the sting of that miss just a bit. Do I blame him for the miss? Hell no…not entirely…the delay of game cost them the win last week.

I’m still happy Bucs fan tonight either way.

    Who else is happy?

  35. Miller5252 Says:

After today you know this team is completely different from the last so many years. After last week I really wanted to see if this staff of 50 coaches could do something we haven’t seen for years. After a brutal loss like last week the old Bucs wouldn’t have even got off the plane and try this week…. hell, they probably would have went on a 5 game losing streak. It’s speaks volumes of what has been driven into team and believe in it 100% when everyone says you’re in a race for Tua. Gay had a heck of a game coming back, I agree it’s the cleats, Winston had the best game I think he has ever played, even the pic, for how crappy it was, he still came back and made some clutch passes. The whole game I think he looked comfortable and looked in command of the offense. The D didn’t give up like they would have in the past and how about the O line making it to where you didn’t hardly hear Donald’s name. Shaq…. give him his money!!! This team played a full 4 quarter victory as a TEAM!! Now the next thing to do….. winning streak playing the same way they did today!!! Awesome job Bucs!!

  36. Tbbucs3 Says:

    PanthersSuck

How can you expect fans to not still be ticked off at a guy who cost the team a win 1 week ago? I’m not for villifying the guy but we can’t just act like he didn’t cost us that Giants game. It’s not all sunshine and butterflies at OneBucsPlace.

Kickers and Defense. Kickers and Defense.

  37. Roberto Aguayo's New Supervisor Says:

    Roberto Aguayo would never

  38. Joe in Michigan Says:

I wasn’t able to watch the game today…Did our kicker wear those yellow shoes again? Knowing that some players are superstitious, I doubt he did.

  39. RODNEY ALLEN Says:

Bridle I was like wtf did I do I defended him after the giants game cuz hes a rookie but then I realized u were talking to munch. I think he will be fine hes still a bit shaky close range but getting alot better n many kickers would of collapsed after last week especially the way some fans bash them for sh!t they couldn’t do from 10yrds. #GAYISHERETOSTAY GTFOI 🤷‍♂️💯

  40. Buccfan37 Says:

Rams kicker had a 58 yard FG also. I want to see Gay kick an even longer FG to win a game.

  41. Rod Munch Says:

SC Bucs Fan – What are you talking about dummy? The kicker did his job today – and last week he cost the Bucs a W. How is saying that rooting against the Bucs?

    God damn, what an idiot.

  42. Richard Says:

He got rid of the yellow shoes.

  43. July Joe Says:

    NINE for NINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GAY made me GAY (happy) today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  44. Pewter power Says:

You’ll need to be 100% from here on out with this fanbase and media Gay, they are ex extremely sensitive and overreact to everything because apparently you’re not supposed to miss any kicks at all. Every bucs fans is perfect at their jobs and doesn’t make mistakes so they expect that same perfection from every player. Miss an extra dont worry they’ll be calling for your job again that’s just how fickle they are

  45. Rodney Munch Says:

Pewter power – Roberto was lynched and drug behind a truck getting out of town – and yet even he didn’t miss a game winning FG.

Gay needs to go and do his job for a while before anyone should have any faith in him.

He did fine today, but that doesn’t make up for the game he, by himself, lost last week.

  46. Slugglife Says:

How did gay lose the game last week? We were up 28-10 at halftime.

Was he playing defense too? Great to see we absolbed the D of any responsibility for that loss. Nope. It was all on the kicker.

Offense scored 3 in second half. But yeah, Gay lost it for his team. What a bunch of dip sh!ts.

  47. BuccaneEric75 Says:

    87, I hear ya

  48. Posey99 Says:

Also 4th best kicker in NFL for fantasy through 4 games. for what it’s worth

  49. Capt. Tim Says:

Rookies are gonna have a few bad days. This kid is our answer at Kicker, for years to come, IMO.
We just have to have a lil patience this year

  50. mark2001 Says:

You guys make me laugh. He didn’t “cost us that game against the Giants”….he contributed to the loss. But a better pass from JW, better play calling and execution in that series, better D and O execution in the second half, and there would have been no need for that FG. Yes, he had a bad ga,e. But does one bad pass from Jameis, or a dropped ball by a WR, or a missed tackle on one play “cost a game”? Not at all…it is a team effort. Maybe we fans need a reeducation on what is really involved in winning or losing a football game.

  51. orlbucfan Says:

The usual allotment of dumb yahoos on here forget that this is only the FOURTH game played with a new head coach and staff. Granted the ST needs work, but whoever kicked off did a terrific job pinning the Rams back. The returners couldn’t chance returning. I listen on radio, and saw a couple of those KOs in TV highlights. Mr. Gay made 13 points. Both kickers were huge yesterday. BTW, I kept confusing the offense with the AFL. 55 points in a NFL game?? What are they gonna score next week, 65? I’ll take it. Go Mighty Bucs!!
