Gay Stays Put

September 24th, 2019

Defends his kicker.

In recent years, the kicking situation has been such a circus show, (bad) kickers have come and gone so often that it seemed like Team Glazer owned a twisted Stephen King-like revolving door just for (bad) kickers.

If that door exists, it is locked for rookie kicker Matt Gay.

On the same day Rondé Barber was inducted into the Ring of Honor, Gay inducted himself into the famed Bucs Kickers Hall of Shame by missing two extra points and a short field goal that cost the Bucs a crucial game.

It may send the team into a feared tailspin.

First yesterday, Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians, in his day-after presser, didn’t want to hear about the litany of terrible Bucs kickers in the past six seasons.

“That’s one of those half-empty glass things – this history [stuff],” Arians said. “This is a new team. This is our team, this new team. Just go kick.”

And for those who believe if Gay isn’t run this week then the Bucs better be ready to pull the trigger on a new kicker next week, Arians had blunt words for Gay’s critics.

“You paid your money, [so say] whatever you want to say. He isn’t going anywhere,” Arians said.

There you have it. Arians is saying, eff history. The Bucs live in the present.

How long the Bucs will stay in the present if Gay continues to have days like Sunday, that’s anyone’s guess.

I will begin rooting against the Bucs every week. This coach is a total, joke.

  2. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Of course he does. 5th rounder? Think the front office will admit a horrible mistake? It’s a Bucs’ life.

  3. Dom>Licht Says:

Of course he stays… plenty of talent on this roster. Secondary is fixed with this latest brilliant draft… it is all coaching! All Mike Smith’s fault!

  4. 813bucboi Says:

he misses any kick next week he’ll be gone….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  5. Fartman Says:

“You paid your money”… a mistake i dare not repeat, for sure.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

You have to give him another chance……this is the right call….

The more serious problem on this team is BA’s lack of trust of Jameis Winston.

It takes a very long time to restore trust. Time, I’m not sure Jameis has.

  7. Pittsshore Says:

Santos does not miss that kick. Also, during Arians McGoos press conference yesterday he stated that Gay has has a hard time from the right hash. Then why did we not take a knee on the left hash? I am willing to get that JW was told to take a knee on the left hash and he forgot.

  8. ClodHopper Says:

    Half empty glass… New team….

Easy to say for the guy new in town!!

He’s fighting that culture with all he has. Many a coach has tried to naively defend the kicker in Tampa with little success. Welcome to Tampa, BA. This is the sht you signed up for. Enjoy replacing him in week 12 after you’ve finally had enough!

  9. El Buco Realisto Says:

    @813bucboi

Maybe theyjust need to coach him up!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don’t worry about the kicker sheep!!!!!!!!! This time next week, we will be discussing the failure of the trenches!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Rayjay1122 Says:

As much as it pains me to admit, Realist may be right after all. I am tired of being a turd polisher.

  11. StonedBuc Says:

    “You paid your money”

ARIANS IS A LOSER OF A DUDE WOW.

Im about to buy a jersey and start rooting for the away teams every week. This has become a joke. Mike evans doesnt look happy, he wouldnt even high rive leftyards on the field.

  12. Clw JB Says:

Capece is kaput – my favorite of all time

  13. Buddy Says:

Well if Grandpa Bruce lives in the present- uh his record is 1-2 as HC of the Bucs not looking so good there Bucco Bruce!!! What happened to that dumba$$ hat you used to wear? and now wearing a baseball hat?? This guy is a joke

  14. Hodad Says:

Santos was more then a capable kicker, he was doomed when our dumb ass GM had to draft a kicker again. Of course they aren’t going to give up him. Just like they won’t give up on picks like Spence, Hargraves, the list is long, and painful. Licht has to justify his new contract. Just ask Bunting, Licht’s the smartest GM in the league.

  15. I’m a Gay kicker Says:

I knew my job was safe because coach Brucie told me it was while me and Lorenzo were sipping our Zimas at our local hang out. All you haters can just go kiss my cheeks…. ooh please kiss my cheeks!
    Signed
    Mathew Gay

  16. Steven007 Says:

Rayjay, don’t be misled. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day. Realist is praying for failure. He’s loud when we accommodate him and turns into a turtle when things go well. Don’t fall into the rabbit hole. We’re not even a quarter of the way into the season. As I said in another post we are inches away from being two and one. Let the season play out.

  17. #1bucsfan Says:

Wasn’t gays second extra point kicked blocked? I didn’t see it but that’s what someone told me an if that’s true then usually not all the time but usually wen a kick is blocked that’s on the lineman for not blocking up front unless the kick was really low

  18. Warrenfb12 Says:

I feel like we’ve played this script out before.

It’s comical to me to hear a coach want to keep a professional kicker who can’t kick 34 yard field goals. We are all going to go through another game soon where Arians (like every other hard-headed nfl coach) trots out his bad kicker because he is playing the percentages-meanwhile the ENTIRE fan base is screaming not to trust the kicker and he is AGAIN going to cost this team game(s). It’s frankly sickening and unacceptable. Go get a veteran kicker who makes extra points and short kicks. If this team had done that every year for the past 5 years it would have significantly more wins…and not be the laughingstock it is.

  19. Allbuccedup Says:

Buc realist is always right. Its a bucs life.HAHAHAHA.

  20. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

    Gay should be “KaPut”

  21. #1bucsfan Says:

So BA has a massive job of turning this franchise around that has bin soooo bad for soo long. BA is human remember all humans make some mistakes we are not perfect even if we are making millions still doesn’t mean we are going to get every call or situation right. WE ARE 3 GAMES INTO THE SEASON AN YOU SO CALLED FANS ARE ASKING FOR THIS GUYS HEAD. this isn’t a microwave were you put something in an you get results in seconds it’s going to take time to weed out all the crap these past coaches have done. PATIENTS PEOPLE. the team does look better for the most part then in last years there are going to be growing pains. You so called fans that want instant success will be very disappointed

  22. DBS Says:

Of course you forget (on purpose I’m sure) to mention one extra point was blocked. If it was as tipped Jameis interception you wou not leave that out and hold him harmless. Fact is the entire team lost this game. The offense should not be falling on its face in the red zone. Defense was bad. Special teams and coaches. Answer. Maybe we need to hire a few more coaches and waste more money.

  23. The Graham Tram Says:

Settling for a kicker (Santos) who has obvious range limitations is a loser’s move.

Gay has been solid for the most part and he’ll get better from this

  24. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

The worst thing you can possibly do is to draft a D3 kicker who has mental health issues and has never played in a big game.

Gay blew this game, he knows it. There is nothing the coach or his team mates can do to stop the down ward spiral now.

Hang on to your hats boys and girls, this ride is about to get rocky.

I’ll bet the house that the kicker never plays in Ray Jay again.

The simple cure is to fire Gay, have a cattle call and a dozen better kickers show up at OBP. Pick the best one and the show goes on.

The sad thing is that about 40 coaches and their families are going to be uprooted and may not ever get a gig in football again.

Biscuit gets paid. Gump gets paid. Glazers get paid. Fans get screwed again!

  25. Pewter power Says:

Media says the dumbest things the fear mongering is ridiculous, why would BA care about kicking woes in years past, why would he care about the playoff drought none of that is associated with him and it is an all new team and all new players for him. Every coach has had kickers miss game winners duh you dont make this move 3 games out after one bad outing. Media sure knows how to exaggerate things they know nothing about. Just because you play madden doesn’t mean it can be done in real life. Dude may go on to have a stellar career and I’m sure that’s what you ha e to believe if you are the bucs

  26. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

I’m sure Gay won’t be thinking about that game losing miss next time he’s in the same situation….right? What? No….??? Roberto A-gay-o indeed.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Matt Gay will be fine. This is one of those situations when the fans need to be more patient. Did they really not expect growing pains from a rookie kicker?

Don’t blame him for the game loss. The defense dropped the ball in the game.

  28. D-Rome Says:

There’s no reason to cut Matt Gay at this point. Vinatieri has had a worse year so far and you don’t see the Colts looking to cut him.

  29. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

New Defense. Mew Offense. New Rookie Kicker.

Come on, people. It takes time to acclimate. Ignore the hate mongering. They mean absolutely nothing.

Stop being bandwagon fans and commit.

  30. Adrnagy Says:

Invested on the kicker with draft pick. You have to keep him at least couple games.

  31. Rayjay1122 Says:

Too many Gay excuses on here folks. Quit coddling him already! He is a grown ass professional man who is getting paid to make those kicks. If that was a 50+ yard attempt it would be excusable but that chip shot miss is really not. Sorry but it just isn’t.

  32. Rayjay1122 Says:

But if we are tanking for a new QB then by all means allow Gay to lose about 5 more games for us.

  33. TampaBay AllDay Says:

Did @D-rome just compare our kicker to a PROVEN kicking legend?

  34. Miller5252 Says:

The reason this hurts so bad for so many fans is because we all believed the hype that the team was reloading. All over the news was Arians is a coach that can turn around this team in an off season and get them to the playoffs with little to no personnel changes. Guess what…. we all bought into that and allowed the hopes of playoffs cover all the holes this team has had for years. So guess what, the team needs more work and better players to make this thing get better, just like we knew last year. I would even go as far and say we’re only 3 games into this and everyone acts like the coach should be fired. 1 off season and draft and 3 games into a new coach and staff and we expect playoffs. What did it take Dungy’s team to start believing and wining 10-11 games?? I get it sucks we acted like the Bucs from the past…. but from what I’ve seen we’ve already made strides in areas that with the players we have, no one thought would happen. I really want to see this team this weekend and see if they’re the old Bucs or if there is a new mentality about getting kicked and standing back up and fighting again. Only 3 games so far…..

  35. TampaBay AllDay Says:

If he had a spectacular preseason then i get it…but he didnt. One more game like that then he should be gone

  36. Defense Rules Says:

Bonzai … “New Defense. New Offense. New Rookie Kicker.” And THAT’S the bottom line Bonzai: almost everything about this year’s Bucs’ team is about acclimating to change. It TAKES TIME for things to gel at this level. Through 3 games they’ve actually played quite well IMO. The first game came down to turnovers. The second game came down to defense stepping up on the last play. The third game ultimately came down to a missed FG. Bad luck? Curses? Or just 1 or 2 guys not coming through when a big play (or plays) was needed? Take your pick. But realistically this TEAM has been much more competitive than any we’ve had in awhile. We’re getting there, but it’ll take some TIME more than likely.

  37. TampaBay AllDay Says:

5th rounders get cut everyday B.

  38. TampaBay AllDay Says:

WE WANT TO WIN NOW STOP THE EXCUSES. ITS BEEN LONG ENOUGH ALREADY

  39. Jeff Says:

Stupid to keep him. Well, I guess they’ll cut him after he chokes again.

  40. Conte Piscatelli Says:

Yes the dude missed the I’ve that mattered most but he went 4-5 on field goals for the day. That isn’t a bad day. BA already called out the reason we lost, we went 1-5 in the red zone. We left 19 points on the field!! If we finish drives, the game was over. The team doesn’t know how to win.

  41. Fire the fans Says:

Cut him for who? You guys have no faith in anything. Continuity is what we need. They could easily be 0-3 but they could also easily have been 3-0. Lets just let the season play out. The one issue I have is the apparent lack of trust in Jameis. If BA thinks he will fail then what are we doing? No matter how you look at it this isn’t a deep into the playoffs team even at best. Why not just give Jameis the keys for the year and see what happens? If he sucks, we got out answer and if he’s good then we got our answer. Not letting him decide his own fate is going to leave things cloudy for us when decision time comes

  42. Fire the fans Says:

    Our answer *

  43. Buc1987 Says:

    Oh he’s getting cut.

It’s only a matter of time and lots more misery.

    —————-

Nah, saddest thing is that Gay played D1 and you’re too stupid to know that and your hero RB can’t get on the field for the Rams.

  45. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

Already mentioned and not the 1st…but I certainly prefer kaput. Bruce has buyer’s remorse…probably wishes he was on his boat in Georgia where every hour is happy hour. Licht Weight will go down as one of the worst NFL GMs in NFL history when it’s all said and done. Glazers…please cash out on your Dad’s incredible investment. Perhaps after the Super Bowl hosted at Ray Jay? Not likely…

  46. TampaBay AllDay Says:

Cut him for who? Lmao ANYBODY that can make a 34yd kick. We need two kickers one for short distance and one for long distance

  47. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Fire the fans

Is this your first year watching the Bucs?

You’re a little late with “ let’s see how JW does”. We’ve been on that train for a few years now.

  48. TampaBay AllDay Says:

I think this is a ego thing. Licht weight doesnt want to admit he was wrong about drafting a kicker…AGAIN. I mean do u guys imagine how this will look on his resume. We had a solid kicker last year and he does this.

  49. Snook Says:

The reason they’re not cutting him is because whoever they hire off the street will be just as bad and weak minded when it comes to performing under pressure.

It doesn’t matter who we have. Score TDs. Go for 2 every time. Its that simple.

And stay aggressive the entire game. Anyone remember how we got the ball back right before the end of the 2nd half with less than a minute left and we actually tried to score? Keep that up the entire game. Stay aggressive. Don’t let games be decided by guys who played soccer in high school and not football.

  50. Pickgrin Says:

Gruden has said he was very close (more than once) to cutting Sebastian Janikowski in his rookie season….

What a terrible mistake that would have turned out to be.

This “situation” with Gay requires some patience. I don’t believe he is mentally weak. Just had a bad day at the office which sucks when you are new to the company….

  51. Alanbucsfan Says:

Gay wasn’t the only problem with special teams.
Bucs had 5 punt returns for 9 yards.
Giants had 13 yards on their 1 punt return.
Special teams return set up was pathetic.

  52. TampaBay AllDay Says:

@alan thats a fact. Idk if it was the blocking or what but bobo is nothing special back there

  53. 813bucboi Says:

    Realist

you didnt have sh!t to say after a WIN….

now your doing cartwheels after a lost….lol…

guess what, smitty is still unemployed and dirk lost another game…..

    GO BUCS!!!!

  54. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Miller not everyone bought into that. The smarter fans recognized this team lacks talent in many key areas. Believing that a coach could turn a 5-11 team into a playoff team was just silly. There has been some improvement, but the defense looked a lot like last years defense. Koetter was brought back to ATL for a reason. He is a good OC and Tampas offense is not much improved over last years.

  55. CChead Says:

Maybe the Glazers can bring in someone who can kick straight from their other football team.

  56. The Buc Realist Says:

    @813broccoli

Once again, your statements are wrong!!!!!!!!!! And if you want more truth from “The Buc Realist” you need to ask joe to remove the moderation off of The Buc Realist, who’s only crime was telling the TRUTH about the inaccurate game manager qb over a year ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and as always, here is proof that you statement is full of lies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Its the Request “Realist Repost”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    El Buco Realisto Says:

Seeing the “real” toilet bolwes defense????? Or did toilet bolwes defense just played two damaged QB’ s and nearly went .500????????????? Toilet bolwes will be EXPOSED once they play an average team!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  57. Troy Says:

I’m going to keep saying this; winning starts at the very top. The Glazers have never won. Their old man won. He was the winner. The kids have never won and don’t know how to win. Winners would not accept this nonsense. We have a team that can’t play football worth a crap. The kids tolerate this nonsense because they don’t understand winning. Until this team has an owner who’s a winner, we’re sunk.

  58. JimmyJack Says:

Here’s what happened. A rookie had a bad game.

Anybody not understanding why they are not giving up on Gay is an absolute maroon.

  59. FireJasonLicht Says:

We need to sack this project and begin the rebuild from scratch. FIRE EVERYBODY FROM JASON LICHT ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE WATERBOY. Bring in a REAL GM with a proven track record and let him pick the next coach QB etc… and start fresh. No holdovers from any of the regimes from the last decade including players. No Winston noone. But I’m done with this team until it is COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY PURGED. Go Yucks!!

  60. Troy Says:

FireJasonLicht is very close except the owners need to sell to someone who understands the concept of winning. The Glazers don’t even know what winning is because they’ve never done it. There father did it.

  61. JimmyJack Says:

Fire Jason Licht……You are done with the team after one missed kick? You need to thicken up.

Do you want a tough football team or not? Practice what you preach bro and toughen up as a fan.

Running away in the face of adversity is a losing approach in sports.

Luckily this team got way more guts then you and will proove it this Sunday. Too bad you’ll miss it.

But no worries the doors on the bandwagon are always open.

  64. D-Rome Says:

Did @D-rome just compare our kicker to a PROVEN kicking legend?

What Vinatieri did in the past and what he’s doing this year are two very different things. What I said is still remains true. Vinatieri is having a terrible year, worse than Matt Gay.

  65. D-Rome Says:

    Bonzai, JimmyJack,

There is no such thing as a bandwagon Buccaneers fan. A bandwagon fan only roots for the team when they are perennially successful and stop following the team when they are bad. The only fans left are the die-hards and the fake fans that root for both the Bucs and another team (i.e. Giants).

  66. Barbosa Says:

Janikowski’s rookie year he made less than 69% of his field goals. This guy has been kicking for 3 weeks and people want him gone. The Bucs lost 7 straight dungy’s first year here. This team has had a chance to win every game and is so young. Losing this last game sucks but I’m not calling for anyone’s job until the end of the year evaluation. Please lord baby Jesus, I don’t want to be talking next years draft before Halloween!

  67. Dom>Licht Says:

New offense New Defense New Coaches New kicker …. same GM SAME results…. hhhhmmmm I wonder?

  68. MadMax Says:

So then bring back Santos for the short kicks…..we’ll carry 2 kickers, wth….may as well, ones good for the long the other for the short…

this kicking game is killing us, we lost by 1

and how many close games have kickers lost us over the past 4 years? Yes, it shouldnt come down to the kicker at times, but this times its all on Matt! So, ok, stick with him, but bring in another kicker to make the short ones he cant make…its not rocket surgery!!!!!

  69. Pruritus Ani Says:

We re screwed. That’s just so gay

  70. Denjoe Says:
