Defending Saquon Barkley

September 19th, 2019

Focus of Bucs defense.

In the eyes of Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians, the concept of stopping the Giants is simple, in theory.

Doing so on the field is another matter.

As Arians said last night on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Job 1 is to stop Saquon Barkley. That may be close to an impossible task. Arians seemed to hint Barkley will get his yards.

But limited big plays from Barkley may be easier to accomplish. To do so, Arians said yesterday in his daily presser, sounds like simple fundamental defense: gang-tackle and be disciplined.

“Gap integrity is huge,” Arians said. “We can’t have guys trying to do too much because [Barkley will] find that spot, and we have to do a great job of tackling. That was what I thought the best thing we did the other night against [Christian] McCaffrey, was we got a lot of hats to the ball.

“Vernon [Hargreaves III] made the great play at the end, but during the game we had a lot of hats running to the ball. That, and then take care of those short passes where they get [Barkley] out in space – I think he’s more dangerous there than anywhere.”

And last night Arians, while very happy how the Bucs contained dangerous Stinking Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey, added that Barkley is on another “planet.”.

Arians seems confident the Bucs defense can handle Giants rookie quarterback Daniel Jones, who is expected to get his first NFL start Sunday at the Den of Depression.

But how the Bucs defend and contain Barkley is a story yet to be written.

I think no matter what we do, he’ll still get his…..minimum of 100 yards rushing.

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Keep SB from big plays…..keep him out of the end zone…..Bucs Win!!!

    “How do you stop Barkley?

Be up double digits and make them pass to catchup

both games by Giants couldnt get Barkley more touches because they were to far behind in the 2nd half

Shurmer going to go non stop short passes and grind with Barkley

Sunday will be the day where Bowles and the defense needs the Tampa offense to shine to help the defense out

    My Dad and I suggest

    Unplug Byron Leftfoots headset”

2 point Formula for success and victory this Sunday:

    1. Limit Barkley to under 100 total yards and keep him out of the end zone.

    2. Blitz the rookie QB mercilessly!

  5. LordCornelius Says:

The gang tackling was great in Carolina.

Vea/Suh are destroying interior of the line and making it super hard to run on us. Those guys seem to be taking up 3-4 O-lineman on their own in terms of disruption which is allowing our LBs to swarm to ball carriers.

Kind of crazy to think the Panthers put up 27 on the Rams defense and we held them to 14 and out of the end zone.

49ers only put up 16 on the defense and then scored 41 against the Bengals.

The Giants have played the Cowboys & Bills and both have pretty solid Ds.

    GO BUCS!

limit the big plays….keep them from scoring TD’s…..

We continue to pound the rock, minimize JW’s mistakes and score TD’s in the red zone…..

    BUCS WIN 28-10….

JW throws 2TD’s…barber has a TD and out rushes barkely….defense scores another TD…..

BL tells @kobe and his son to go F themselves!!!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

Wonder if BA lets them wear the white uniforms.

For once, I agree with you!

  9. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Giant’s passing offense is average at best. If we stack the box early, we can hold Barkley to under 100 yards and force the rookie QB to make mistakes

“This is the reason why my Dad doesnt post here anymore

the verbal persecution is as painful as the bodily infliction

    Desperate times means desparate measures

My Dad and I will be on a secret mission

We will cut and sabotage the headset & cord of QB intern Byron Leftfoot”

Play your gap responsibility!!!!! All game long !!!!

Barkley gets 150 yards and a TD and the Gmen still lose big.

Our defense will score points off the rookie QB…either pick sixes…scoop and score fumble on a sack..or a turnover inside the ten.

Our offense will finally get rolling againt a Gmen defense that is mediocre on it’s best days.

We need to jump on them early which will take Saquon out of the second half when the Gmen fall too far behind to run.

  13. Dave5928 Says:

Our near undoing last week was STUPID penalties. We need tight, disciplined play. Do that and the Bucs will not only win but win big. We darn near beat ourselves at Carolina and destroyed ourselves vs. the 49ers.

  14. chris L Says:

This game the offense needs to do their job.

  15. bucsfan951 Says:

i agree with the son of the great kobe… score points where they have to pass to make it competitive

  16. BucemBruski Says:

We have Suh and Vea and even Gholston who is a good run defender on our D-line. I’m not concerned with him going up the gut. Contain him on the outside.

  17. Jean Lafitte Says:

same game plan used on Carolina should suffice

  18. Rob Tanner Says:

Band and don’t break. Give him as many yards as he can handle. Just keep him and the receivers out of the end zone. #GoBucs!

  19. BucemBruski Says:

Jean I agree but Barkley is stronger and faster than McCaffrey so it will be a way bigger challenge. I think we’re up for it though. LB’s are going to have to be up for it tho. No doubt our D-line is

  20. eoschwartz Says:

Simple, when he bounces outside get him, Vea, Suh, Allen and Ghoulston are all exceptional run stuffers. They are hard to move. All big men
