All You Need To Know About Bruce Arians’ Appearance On SiriusXM NFL Radio

September 19th, 2019

National radio spot.

Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians visited “Late Hits,” co-hosted by Alex Marvez and Bill Polian last night, heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio. Here are the highlights:

* Arians said during coaches meetings prior to Bucs players returning to One Buc Palace on Tuesday to start Giants week practices, the staff had a hunch the Giants would bench franchise icon quarterback Eli Manning for rookie Daniel Jones. “We had a pretty good idea something might happen,” Arians said. So before the team arrived, the coaching staff crafted a contingency plan in case Jones was named the starter, which he was on Tuesday. Though Arians did not say this, Joe has to wonder if Arians had some intel this would happen?

* Arians said on Manning getting benched, “I hated to see it happen” because he really likes him a lot.

* Arians said the defensive gameplan isn’t much different than last week against Carolina in that the Bucs want to rush Jones the same way they came after Cam Newton. Arians and his assistants wanted to keep Newton in the pocket. “We didn’t want Cam out [of the pocket] improvising plays.” With Jones starting over Manning, he gives the Giants a mobile quarterback option who can hurt a defense, running or throwing.  The defensive philosophy this week won’t change much, Arians added, if at all. “I doubt seriously they will run many zone-reads with him because of the injury factors.” (Polian agreed.) Arians suggested this week’s defensive gameplan is like a carry-over from Carolina.

* Said Giants running back Saquon Barkley reminds him of Barry Sanders because every game he pops in a tape of, “there is a 50- or 60-yard run.” Arians noted Christian McCaffrey is a “heckuva good running back,” but it’s unfair to compare Barkley to McCaffrey, Barkley is that good. “There is no doubt 26 is the gameplan. We have to stop 26.”

* Arians complimented cornerback Vernon Hargreaves for being such an intelligent player and he said that intelligence enabled Hargreaves to recognize the Stinking Panthers’ final play and sniff out that McCaffrey was coming his way.

* The head coach waved off America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winton appearing on the injury list yesterday with a bum foot. “If anyone has a hangnail, you have to put it on an injury list,” Arians said. “He hasn’t missed a practice. He got stepped on in [the Carolina] game. He hasn’t missed a beat.”

* Arians explained in his offense, facing a four-man front, he asks his tight ends to do more blocking in the run game. As a result, they will get less passing targets than facing a three-man front (the Bucs have thus far faced two four-man front defenses). Arians specifically cited O.J. Howard’s lack of targets but contrary to popular belief, raved about Howard’s blocking. “O.J. Howard isn’t catching a lot of balls but he did a heck of a job blocking” in the Bucs’ final drive last Thursday.

* The pressure and ability to push the pocket back displayed by Vita Vea and Ndamukong Suh is allowing Carl Nassib and Shaq Barrett to get one-on-one matchups, enabling them to hunt quarterbacks, Arians said.

* Arians believes the Bucs defense was successful last week, in part, because of good tackling. “We didn’t give up a lot of yards after catch because that’s Carolina’s offense.”

    GO BUCS!!!!

No offense had more passing yards than the Bucs’ last season, and only two had more total yards. For those keeping score at home, the Bucs averaged 415 yards per game.

That’s not exactly where Arians wants to be this season. For him, that wreaks of an imbalanced offense.

“I don’t care to be third in the league in passing offense. That means you’re last probably in rushing,” Arians told the Buccaneers Radio Network. “That means you’re probably throwing the ball 50 times a game because you’re losing. No, if we’ve got the ball at the end of the game and we’re running and passing then we’re in it.”
**************************************************************so you want the offense that racks up a bunch of yards but cant score in the red zone….lol….

that offense led us to 5wins 2years in a row….it didnt matter who was calling plays in that offense….2017 dirk called plays and we were 5-11….2018 monken called plays and we won 5games….lol….

    that offense was trash!!!!!!!

we need a balanced offense….BL is doing a great job minimizing JW’s mistakes, controlling the clock, sticking to the run and creating mismatches…..

stats are for losers….stack them W’s!!!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

Everyone has to stop feeding the trolls. They will go away. #GoBucs

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The media likes Arians…..Arians likes the media….I think this will ultimately result in better media relations for the Bucs…..

Yes….the offense may not be as dynamic as last year’s…..but it may be more productive….

  6. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ Son of Kobe

    I’m wondering that too.

Leftwhat? doesn’t seem to be very innovative and it seems that the offense is just running vanilla plays…..dumbed down like it is a preseason offense.

    You just have to wonder:

    – Is Leftwhat? not a very good O-Coordinator

    OR

    – Is Jameis the cause of the offense not blowing up cause Leftwhat? doesn’t trust Jameis enough and he’s trying to limit Jameis turnovers…..essentially Jameis is being treated like a game manager like the way he played against the Panthers???

  7. Son of Kobe Faker Says:

“Have you seen this year’s stagnant offense

we cant convert 3rd downs and move down the field. we cant score. we dont use and put our players incorrect routes to their strengths and skillset

our offense will be stagnant once again by Leftfoots prevent offense and not by the players we have

THE PROBLEM IS OUR SHOULD BE QB COACH INTERN

YOU WILL SEE THIS SUNDAY AGAINST THE WORST DEFENSE IN THE NFL”

    Son of Kobe Faker

  8. BrianBucs Says:

Have always really liked Arians. However, he seems to be everywhere. Wish he would do more coaching and less talking.

  9. Son of Kobe Faker Says:

    “TheBucsAnthem

finally u see what we see

4 years of tape and mobile JW is great rolling out or on the move. He is deadly accurate on 3rd downs

JW is forced to stay in the pocket. our pass catching TEs are inline blocking

this is exactly the 2018 Arizona offense led by Byron Leftfoot”

    Son of Kobe Faker

  10. Jim Says:

Good Jameis protects the ball and goes short, but doesn’t score many yards or points. Bad Jameis scores points and lots of yards, but with too many turn-overs. Is there another Jameis somewhere?

  11. ChanEpic Says:

Love this coach, and this team is lucky to have him.

  12. 813bucboi Says:

    KOBE

BL was ARZ’s OC for half the season!!!!!….lol….just like smitty was the DC last year for half the season….

are you blaming duff for the lousy defense or smitty?…..

blame mike mccoy for ARZ’s lousy offense….not byron….he didnt start calling plays until late OCT….they were 1-6 when he took over as OC!!!!!!

THAT WAS MIKE MCCOYS OFFENSE BL WAS FORCED TO RUN…..

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  13. WhatTheBuc Says:

Brianbuc, The NFL has media requirements for all coaches. Every NFL head coach does a spot on NFL radio. They don’t have a choice. Dirk did the same last season

  14. Joe Says:

Brianbuc, The NFL has media requirements for all coaches. Every NFL head coach does a spot on NFL radio.

Most, not all. Not exactly sure what the requirements are for coaches on SiriusXM NFL Radio but am sure it is in the coach’s contract.

Lovie didn’t do SiriusXM NFL Radio and the only radio he would do was locally (which he was contractually obligated to do) he only fielded canned questions written by Bucs staffers or emails from fans (?) that were prescreened.

But yeah, NFL coaches are required to speak x-amount of times a week. Some enjoy it (Arians) and others despise it (Lovie) and some just go with the flow (Koetter).

Many fans hate the following but it is true and the NFL has known this for decades: Building drama builds interest and one cheap, easy way to build drama is to have coaches talk.

  15. Son of Kobe Faker Says:

    “813

    we disagree

no targets to OJ, no play action after a good run, absolutely no intermittent game, deep passes to 2x cut perriman, cant convert 3rd down and go down the field…etc

its about the pts not yards

NY Giants has the worst defense in the NFL watch how our prevent offense does

*After watching Julio Jones run the bubble screen for a TD, our QB intern is going to run a bubble screen with slowfooted ME”

  16. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist - City of St Pete (formerly known as 'The Kwon Alexander of Bucs Fans') ***Rhealist, louden annoying, & tminimum are the worst posters ever!!! Says:

As far as the Offense is concerned, think back to our ’02 season when our guys were still learning Gruden’s offense… The offense got better and better throughout the season and was very efficient by the end of the year on our Superbowl run…

We could see the same type of scenario play out this year, Bucs Fans…

  17. TOM Says:

BA is probably the best HC since Gruden, but think he should be his own OC. Of course having TB defense certainly doesn’t hurt either.

  18. 813bucboi Says:

    kobe

has OJ played well so far?…..

his blocking up til this point sucks and he cost JW an INT by not hanging on to the ball….

perriman…i dont like JW throwing to him either because of his hands but what do you want JW to do if perriman beat his man…not throw him the ball?….lol…gotta throw to the open WR…..

i dont know what game you’ve been watching but ive seen plenty of intermediate throws(godwins TD catch & perriman TD drop), 3rd down conversions and JW hit mike on a great deep ball Thursday night….

it is about points not yards so why are you pinning for the offense from last year when all that offense did was rack up yards but never found the endzone…..

nice of you to ignore the fact that BL took over for a fired mike mccoy mid way thru the season just like duff took over for smitty…..

its week3 man…..lol….the staff doesnt want to peak too early…..thats what happened last year….by week3 steelers shut that offense down and we never recovered…..

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  19. DB55 Says:

Once again the GREATEST QUARTERBACK IN THE HISTORY OF THE BUCCANEERS is playing hurt behind THE WORST OFFENSIVE LINE IN THE HISTORY OF THE BUCCANEERS but but TURNOVERS

  20. Rod Munch Says:

Barkley is really good – but come on, comparing him to Sanders? I get what Arians is saying in that Barkley will make some big plays, but man, Sanders is in a league by himself, he could make 11 guys miss if he was playing 11-on-1. Barkley, to me, is more of a power/speed guy, where Sanders was all about agility and quickness and an incredibly change of direction.

  21. Rob Tanner Says:

I didn’t see Bruce’s appearance on the radio. Did he look good?

  22. Patrickbucs Says:

Barkley is more like an LT then Sanders.

Always blaming the line, yeah they have been terrible the last two games.. Lol
