Carefree Cappa’s Road Take

September 30th, 2019

No longer do Bucs fans have to wince while watching their right guard play.

The Benenoch-Sweezy-Smith era is far in the rear view mirror.

Alex Cappa is in the house and he’s playing well. And the 24-year-old may be a little clairvoyant.

Before yesterday’s throttling of the Rams, Cappa spoke on the Buccaneers’ official radio broadcast. He usually talks in cliches and has little of interest to say, but this time he quickly waved off the expressed notion that the Bucs have a rough early road schedule. No, Cappa said, it’s “fun to go on the road” and he speculated the team would play very well during this long road stretch because of the extra bonding and the nature of how the team comes together.

Perhaps Cappa is onto something?

Asked about his play, Cappa was adamant that he’s just in a natural progression after little playing time during his 2018 rookie season. Now he’s “getting the experience you can’t really replicate.”

Joe’s eager to see how much Cappa can improve as this season rolls on.

The whole Cappa evolution especially intrigues Joe because two people very close to the Buccaneers’ offensive line gave Joe very different takes on Cappa in the spring and summer. As this year’s NFL Draft approached, Joe was told by one guy that Cappa may not have what it takes physically and mentally. Then another guy in late spring told Joe that Cappa is really “getting it” and looks ready to step up.

Regardless, Joe could make a case right now that the interior of the offensive is the biggest strength of the Bucs.

It’s hard to envision that Benenoch kept beating this guy out last year. Definitely an upgrade.

  2. Matt Says:

Not to steal Ira Kaufman’s commentary but at halftime my game ball went to Alex Cappa. I really think that going against Vea Suh and Gholston everyday in practice is really developing our linemen. Let’s invest 2 top picks next year so we can build a solid offensive line and be good for the next 5-7 years.

  3. Senor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

The OL played a really great game. We have talked for so long (usually when defending Jameis) about complimentary football. Yesterday we had a decent running game, very good QB, really good linebackers, awesome Dline, only the secondary is the weak link right now.

Thank you Bucs for such a great game!

  4. 813bucboi Says:

    Happy for Cappa…

Sucks for Benenoch….dude spent 3years with a staff that failed to develop him and others….

Huge indictment of the previous staff…..

    GO BUCS

  5. Bculaw Says:

Prior regime was not interested in developing players. Cappa and Rojo are exhibit 1a and 1b of that fact.

  6. tmaxcon Says:

i don’t think the Line is any better you have horrible tackles in smith and dotson and marpet gets punked his far share…. It’s more on Leftwhich and Winston for learning how to call plays and play behind a high school offensive line trying to block men. again, there is NOT A SINGLE nfl caliber starter on this line and it will be the death of this team. they escaped this week. saying they played well is a reach. barber just needs to go away give the damn ball to rojo and that dude I can’t spell his name.

  7. FanO’Bucs Says:

Nice to have decent coaching for a change.

  8. Easy Says:

Cappa played extremely well yesterday in pass protection. Lets keep up the good play Sunday in NOLA.

  9. DB55 Says:

    He did great!

One sign of a great playoff team is the ability to win on the road. So start bonding. You’ll need it.

  10. LordCornelius Says:

Thank god man we have had a RG issue for way too long. I was super skeptical of this guy but he’s holding down the fort.

  11. Pewter power Says:

This week in new Orleans will be the donovan Smith show, hopefully he took it personally being trolled by cam Jordan after he signed his new contract. This will be another strong test, these games are against the NFL’s “elite teams”

  12. SOEbuc Says:

This wretched preseason oline has been playing good ball through four games. Penalties and sacks to the QB are going to happen if Jameis holds the ball for three seconds after the snap. Cappa will only continue to grow and get better with good coaching. Draft a multi-skilled beast RT in the first/second round and hopefully this line and running game can be legit.

  13. firethecannons Says:

So Joe let us in on if Beneneoch is performing with Patriots-an update if you can. Awesome to hear/see Cappa making it even against the Rams-one of this years biggest O-line challenges(at least on paper)

  14. webster Says:

Where are all the posters/trolls that bash licht for picking cappa? Crickets exactly. Thats why you are idiot trolls because you go silent when your foolish rhetoric is proven to be just that……foolish. Can’t we allow one player to develop before we start calling them a bust or saying they suck?

  15. DB55 Says:

    Webster

Good point. I thought he’d get rag dolled personally he proved me wrong.

Jameis for the first time this season was not under siege and I like that a lot.

  16. Buccfan37 Says:

Cappa is always preceded by Bust em as in Bust em Cappa.

  17. Capt. Tim Says:

    Cappa-Jensen-Marpet played very well yesterday.
All 3 play with a lot of aggressiveness, especially in the Run game.
Cant wait to see how how good they get, with more time playing together.
Thought they were grooming Benenoch to replace Dotson at RT
    Guess not
They really need to be grooming a couple of young tackles

  18. Jmarkbuc Says:

If the sky wasn’t falling after last weeks loss, wouldn’t it be fair to say we haven’t reached the mountain top, just yet, after this win?

    Temperance people.

  19. J Says:

Tmax..you will fight against the grain tooth and nail even when you’ve run out of excuses for why this team MIGHT be bad. The oline played outstanding and I just watched the game film. Jameis consistently had AT LEAST 4 seconds everytime he had to get rid of the ball.

    Your narrative is officially dead.

  20. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

“Thats why you are idiot trolls because you go silent when your foolish rhetoric is proven to be just that……foolish.”

We are simply observing the official 1 week moratorium on bashing Jason Licht in observance of his father’s passing.

    Amen

  21. HowToSpellRhonde Says:

    @ firethecannons

Beneneoch has been inactive on gamedays for the Patriots.

  22. tmaxcon Says:

    J

You are a typical low standard bucfan putting the cart before the horse while handing out free passes… get back to me when they win a game that actually matters in the postseason

  23. neal Says:

@Tmax. Why do you lie? i can see having a different opinion, but at this point it is FACT. The o line is a strength of this team. You either know so little about football that you can’t see it or you are lying for attention. idk which one is more pathetic. I would love to watch you break down some game film. probably looks a lot like when they make the slow kid in class read aloud…

  24. tmaxcon Says:

    neal

That oline is not a strength lol….. its one game ladies…. no one hands out feee passes like desperate bucfan

  25. Hodad Says:

I think he’s right about being on the road for such long trips giving this young team time to bond. Twenty something year olds shouldn’t be affected by travel. They’re not taking a wooden sailing ship to England, or a covered wagon on their trips out west. Maybe Cappa has a girl friend, but him, and most of the younger guys probably don’t have wife’s, and kid’s they’ll be missing. Let’s face it, Joe calls it the den of depression not because of all the winning we do at home. Maybe with some road wins, they’ll get it in their heads they can win at home.

  26. Alanbucsfan Says:

Cappa is an upgrade, Dotson needs to be replaced .
We have an NFL coaching staff now.
The season success depends on Jameis and yesterday he was great-
Solid for 4 quarters , 20 2nd half points, and responded well to the pick 6.
Bucs will be tough to beat with this Jameis…

  27. Lamarcus Says:

I’m guilty for being to critical of the oline but for me I hate complaining about oline anyway but WHAT we saw earlier I’ll make anybody crazy because we knew they could play better and they have

  28. J Says:

Tmax, you’re a lost lil sheep that no one wants and you’re still dead wrong.

  29. Jean Lafitte Says:

Having a head coach who’s not worried or afraid of losing his job is better for players trying to transition or develop. They have more patience. We can all agree Koetter was concerned about his future and that had an impact on his decision making.

  30. Blackmagic00 Says:

Tmax, I used to have so much respect for your comments. Not lately though. You’re seriously starting to sound like you wish the team would fail just so you can sound smart. Atleast hoping that’s the actual reason and that you’re not some troll who really loves a different team. Come on man! Really????

  31. #1bucsfan Says:

Sorry T M A X I P A D once again your wrong very wrong an everyone knows it. Please change your tampon an eat a snickers your very grumpy an uneducated oh wait that’s just your normal self. This high school line you just called which you are wrong shut down the best DLINEMAN that has ever played the game that’s not luck or by accident. It’s hilarious how wrong you

  32. #1bucsfan Says:

Black magic you can’t be serious about respecting this clowns comments he’s not a fan just a very mad grumpy old troll who needs to have his commuter time cut off from his mom. You might wanna get yourself checked if you think he is a fan of any sort. His comments are hilarious wrong

  33. neal Says:

Tmax. Care to elaborate, or are you just going to repeat the same thing over and over? Just admit you have no idea what you are talking about. You’re not a Bucs fan. You offer nothing. Ever. Usually people that don’t like something can offer ONE reason at last as to why. But you seem incapable. Please grow a pair dude and learn to make a point why you speak like a man, and leave your feminine emotions somewhere else. It’s sad watching you cry all the time.
