Buccaneers 20, Panthers 14

September 13th, 2019

Another sloppy game by both teams, but this time it’s a Buccaneers win.

The discipline isn’t there for Tampa Bay, and neither is a dynamic offense. But all that matters is the “W,” baby. Jameis Winston snapped his 12-game road losing streak and the defense shocked the world!

They shut down all-world Christian McCaffrey and the Bucs’ pass rush was humming. Massive kudos to Shaq Barrett for his relentless pass rush — three sacks and key quarterback pressures. Vernon Hargreaves slammed the door on 4th-and-1, likely with the game on the line.

Bucco Bruce Arians owes Hargreaves a huge cocktail after calling back-to-back timeouts that nearly lost the game and put Hargreaves in that do-or-die situation.

And how about rookie fourth-round DE/LB Anthony Nelson with a forced fumble and a batted down pass!

The just Bucs just won a freakin’ road game behind a suffocating defense. What year is this?

This should be a huge confidence boost for Arians and company.

Joe forgives you, Matt Gay, just don’t do it again. Peyton Barber’s game-winning touchdown was the difference, a bellcow night for No. 25.

Bring on the Giants! Stick with Joe for much more out of this game.

It’s a beautiful day in Tampa Bay!

  10. Ocala Says:

Jameis played solid. Defense played great!
Either Bowles is the best defensive mind in NFL history or Mike Smith is the worst.

  11. Lamarcus Says:

Big props to the Bucs for bouncing back. Great game guys !!!!

  12. Texasbuc Says:

Defense has been lights out but Vernon got picked on all night

  13. King C Says:

After the Arians two-timeout error, CAR calling an outside run play instead of the QB sneak reminded me of the Seahawks not giving it to M. Lynch in the Super Bowl

  14. Rojas Says:

Just imagine how great this defense will be when JPP comes back.

  15. Asdf Says:

Huge performance by the defense! Nailed out the offense and coaches big time.

Hargreaves with the huge tackle, but game all is all Shaq

  21. Wesley Says:

Play calling HAS to be better, and enough with the penalties, also give Rojo the ball more! Go Bucs!

  22. Greg Says:

Game ball either has to go to Winston or Hargraves. Both played huge. Hargraves is a whole new man with Todd Bowles

  23. Rayjay1122 Says:

10 days to prepare to crush the Giants and go 2-1!

  24. tnew Says:

Big question. If Devin White isn’t out (which I fear he might be down for a while), would he get the start over Minter????

Elated to see the Bucs D put the stomp down on this game. They never allowed the Panthers to reach the Endzone tonight. They gave McCaffery nothing & they would not give Carolina a freaking yard!!!!

    GOOOO BUCS!!!!

  27. #1bucsfan Says:

Didn’t recognize the defense out there. Liking what I see from them Davis needs to learn how not to be penalized geez

  28. Bruce Blahak Says:

I guess that question is answered. McCoy is the perennial loser, not the Bucs franchise….

  29. Doctor_berto Says:

Perriman needs to be benched. Props to Hargreaves for that stop, amazing. Vea was a monster moving the interior into Cam all night!

  30. Anonymous Says:

Came home from work really drunk and was astonished that the Bucs were still in the game. After the safety I was thinking that it was the same old Bucs defeating themselves. But a defensive stop when it matters, and by this big bust of a CB… I’ve been thinking that I’m more accustomed to alcohol than defense in Tampa.
Trying to not be too hyped, but still drunk.

  31. Buc1987 Says:

    Gameball to Hargreaves!

  32. Rod Munch Says:

Mike Smith would have given up 48 points tonight.

  33. Armybucsfan Says:

Great game for our defense. However our offense looked pretty pathetic with 200 yards by Winston and less than 100 yards by our rB stable. Don’t get me wrong I’m happy we won this game but I am just saying we cannot play another game like this one and hope to win. I still believe We need to get rid of jameis and find ourselves a really Qb in the draft.

  34. Bruce Blahak Says:

    Gameball to Barrett!!

  35. Frank Pillow Says:

VHIII’s redemption. Wow! I can’t even process what just happened. How long has it been since we made a play like that- backed up- all the momentum swinging their way- the flags, replays, bad spots and over officiating! Overcoming one of those, much less all, has not been in this team’s makeup.
Wow. Just wow. Kudos to the D! We’re alive!

  36. BucsFanFromPhilly Says:

It feels like I am dreaming. There were plenty of flashes of the Bucs I know that would make me cringe but for some reason without the multiple camera angles, the challenges worked in our favor tonight. Especially with that booth review. All of this without our first round draft pick.

  37. LordCorn Says:

Thank god man I’ll take it.

1-1 is probably what most of us had us at through 2 weeks so back on track and time to kick the Giants azz.

I want to see this team improve as the year goes on for once. If what we’re seeing with the defense now isn’t the biggest indictment against the past regimes coaching I dunno wtf is. They look legit. Winston wasn’t great but was way better than week 1. At least we know this offense is capable of a lot more because we’ve seen it.

    GO BUCS!!!

  38. Rojas Says:

    Agree. @Doctor_berto

I’d play bobo in the slot instead.

  39. kgh4life Says:

Now that’s what a defense looks like! Night and day difference from a year ago. No one panicked for the most part, just sound fundamental defense, kudos to Todd Bowles.

  40. SB Says:

Game changing plays by Several players
VH3. Shaq Barrett MANY times, Anthony Nelson………Geeeeeez
What a better performance by the same team with better COACHES!!!!

  41. Tye Says:

    Great win!
The defense and running game save the day…
Won’t win any shoot outs but they can’t go 0-16 now..
    WAHOO !

  42. Bruce Blahak Says:

Still need a QB. He tried to lose it with the delay and safety…

  43. 76bucborn Says:

i would think shaq barrett now leads the league in sacks with 4—that should command NFC defensive player of the week honors solid effort by the D and wow i am a huge devin white fan but maybe minter should be starting with white coming in for relief were just better in the middle with minter at the moment im sure it will change with time and learning i feel bad for devin hes had tonsilitis and now a knee sprain he needs more time… and anthony nelson should get more playing time… gholston has been a huge surprise as well great night defensively shaq could have had 6 sacks and vea got close a bunch too best pressure ive seen from a bucs D in years!

  44. Tbbucs3 Says:

Great win but still so much to clean up.

    – OJ needs to figure it out.
    – Devin White needs to play better when he’s in
    – VH3 and Carlton Davis still not good enough
    – JW Gotta make clutch throws and put teams away.
    – BL has to improve at OC.

  45. Todd Says:

Thanks Joe for a positive article after a hard-fought won!

I was reading and reading…waiting for a narrative turn towards finding something negative about tonight’s win.

    Alas, there was none!

    Thank you!

  46. Capt. Reality Says:

For the first time in my life I had doubts that the NFL is on the up and up.
They clearly wanted the panthers to win and put there finger on the scales
multiple times tonight to give the panthers a chance to pull it out,

  47. Bucsalltheway Says:

McCoy was big mad and jealous at those new bucs that trotted out there…I wonder all the secrets he told about Atlanta offensive playbook we dont run anymore lol

  48. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

Good, stoic post-game interview, Jamies. Great job tonight.

  49. Bucsalltheway Says:

I’m sure McCoy will text Jameis and say thank you for letting HIS bucs win one more time

  50. Dirks Great Granpappy Says:

What does tmax call Vernon? Vh3bust? Or something lacking cleverness?

  51. Buc1987 Says:

    Gameball to Todd Bowles D.

  52. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Our run defense was absolutely stout……shut them down totally and stopped CMC…..dead!!!

  53. Cubano Bucanero Says:

Haven’t see that type of win in 10 years! He’ll yeah!!!

  54. Rod Munch Says:

Capt. Reality – The refs have always been garbage, they literally stole a SuperBowl from us with that BS in St Louis.

  55. Buc1987 Says:

    CMC who?

  56. JimmyJack Says:

Credit to Winston for leading us to victory. Had a decent little game which could have looked even better if his receivers had made him shine. They fell short.

Negative plays and pentalties held our Offense back badly tonight and Winston made it work.

Half of me wanted to see Winston get a last chance in the 1minute drill but my bigger half wanted that big time stop we got. AWESOME!!!!

  57. Pugs&Bucs Says:

While everyone is going to remember the 4th down-goal line stand in this game, lost in the stat sheet is the fact that recently jettisoned Gerald McCoy got goaded into a TERRIBLE unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that gave the Bucs a first down, which led to a touchdown – the difference in the game.

  58. Aaron Says:

    I’ll take it…6x we had 3rd and 10+ yards…mostly due to penalties.

JW was smart with the ball…took sacks…punt…live another day…I wonder what happened for us to call the 2nd TO.

  59. tmaxcon Says:

one thing is for sure is ron Rivera gave bucs a freebee and BA and staff make lovie Smith look intelligent…. vh3bust was torched all game so you felony loving gaytor dirtbags don’t even think about pounding your chests that he has made 2 plays in 4 years….

Joe that oline you relentlessly nuthug makes bonzi’s pear shaped elves look manly…..

  60. Buc believer Says:

    Did GMC even play???? 🤪😁

YOU CAN’T SPELL WINSTON WITHOUT “INTS”

Um…no. You can’t spell at all, lol.

  62. Dirks Great Granpappy Says:

Joe what was wrong with my post? Calling out max for lacking cleverness with his nickname for the guy who had 12 tackles and a pick 6 last week isn’t that bad

  63. TexBuc Says:

Shaq “WOW” Barrett is my game MVP.

  64. Buc4evr Says:

We actually had running game tonight. Left side of O-line was opening holes.

  65. Ed Says:

Fun game to watch, so nice to see the Buc defensive line play the run so tough. They were like a wall of concrete block, the Panthers could not move them backwards. The Buc offense isn’t putting up very good yardage but they showed the potential to be able to win time of possession. The toughness is coming back to the trenches. The one player that seems to be missing in action has been OJ Howard.

  66. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Refs have a lot to answer for.

Makes me wonder if half our penalties were manufactured.

  67. JimmyJack Says:

The cherry on top is McCoy made one tackle…..as far as I remember.

  68. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Shaq mvp.

    Godwin a close second.

  69. FairMinded Says:

Just HUGE. What a way to win! Something to build on the rest of the year. Shaq! Godwin! Hargreaves! Whitehead! Jameis! Unsung heroes like Nelson! What. A. Victory. Nice job coach Bowles…you’re the man!

  70. Armybucsfan Says:

When I saw where the officials placed the ball after the stop on 4th and 1 I almost had a heart attack. I said to my self this game is over. Then the PI happened and I had to take a shot because I feared the worst. Then the double time our poor time management happened and I started biting my nails. Then VH3 makes that stop and I wake my kids up from my screams of joy. This game was strictly a defensive win. Our offense needs some work and jameis needs to learn when to cut and run when the pocket is collapsing.

  71. Buc1987 Says:

We ran the ball….like teams use to run on us with McCoy.

  72. JimmyJack Says:

What was that spit that we can’t call a Timeout? Last week it was the refs aren’t set……what’s with these crap calls I never heard of in my life?

  73. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I have to point out…Suh and Vea were beasts too. They consumed blockers, and if the Panthers eased up on Vea to block Shaq, Vea collapsed the pocket.

So many good defensive players tonight.

  74. Doctor_berto Says:

Vea is not getting enough credit! Be pushed that line back the entire night and changed the game!

  75. Pelbuc61 Says:

Strong road win by the defense. Can’t believe I just said that! What a difference Bowles is making as DC. Offense needs to improve and O.J. needs a gut check.

  76. Buc1987 Says:

No back to back timeouts…I guess.

  77. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I hope Ira and Joe willingly eat crow wings this week in the podcast!

  78. UnderMeBucin’Hat Says:

Hey Tmax! How much did the Bucs suck tonight? Huh? Crickets…Yeeea Boy!

  79. Bucsalltheway Says:

    @armybucfan
Jameis will not run the ball much anymore hes lost his trust there. Ball always ends up on the ground. Jameis dives never slides but plays baseball 😂😂😂

  80. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

    Fugly win!

    Defense Rules!

    Shaq Barrettt = Simeon Rice!

JW threw 3 TD’s tonight! WR\s caught only one!

    Winning is the best deodorant!!!

  81. Buc1987 Says:

    Bonzai…that’s why I said….gameball goes to the whole D.

  82. firethecannons Says:

Boom Shaq a locka and VH3 and all the defense with a great aggressive game. Cant believe how we held CMC to minimal gains, no touchdowns for Carolina, Cam Newton was rattled throwing ball way off recievers.

  83. tmaxcon Says:

Barrett carried that defense reminiscent of the way sapp carried those washed up backups you fools call legends

  84. Dude Love Says:

I love you all, its been a decade since we played defense, except for a couple games under dirk in the win streak year, I love you all party on WAYNE!!

  85. Kville Says:

After two weeks it looks like we have a respectable defense again!

  86. tmaxcon Says:

    UnderMeBucin’Hat

Ron Rivera handed the bucs a win bucs didn’t win anything barrett carried bucs similar to thecway sapp carried that ignorant bumm 55 and friends

  87. Jason S. Mclaurin Says:

I think a lot of these games will be played and won sloppy in this same fashion due to the aggressive nature of the new defense. Todd Bowles really is a genius when he’s locked in on the defensive play calling. I really have been liking what I see so far I said that after the last game. After tonight I feel like Barber should be our lead back but I like our rotation. Next game maybe Dare starts. I also loved the play of our receivers tonight as well. The DBs were lights out as well CD3 VH3 done their job as well as Minter in backup duty though I feel Minter should probably start from here on out. D. White or LVD may have to move outside to really maximize the personnel

  88. Buczilla Says:

Gosh damn it’s nice to get a win. I hope that we are doing the numbers for Shaq’s next contract. Hell, maybe Vernon’s too. 😀

  89. Discobeef Says:

There was lots to criticize tonight, but it was a big character win for the defense regardless!!

  90. tnew Says:

Good news initially regarding Devin White’s knee. PR is reporting it is a sprain and not an ACL!!!! That is a good break

  91. lambchop Says:

Game balls to Shaq Barrett, Kevin Minter, and Chris Godwin. And special mention to Peyton Barber, Anthony Nelson, and I really enjoyed watching Vita Vea man handle Matt Paradis.

  92. Hodad Says:

Tmax, that’s the way it goes in the NFL, more games are really lost then won. After BA calls his second time out to give them 4th, and a half yard, Riverboat Ron does one better trying a trick play instead of letting his big QB sneak for the half yard. Thank you Ron, it’s nice being on the other side of a bone head play for a change.

  93. BUC CHEEKS Says:

Wow! Wow! Wow! I was pacing like a mad man at the end of the game.

  94. BucInCLE Says:

1 solo tackle, 1 TFL – some guy who knows all our moves

  95. Hodad Says:

Did McCoy play? Just like for us, you could hardly notice.

  96. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Hodad, I thought the same thing, but we controlled the line of scrimmage all night. Rivera didn’t want to put the game on a Cam QB sneak right into Suh and Vea. He won’t run Cam anymore in the 1st quarter. He certainly won’t do it late in the 4th.

  97. BuccaneEric75 Says:

2 random thoughts. First, is Godwin Winston’s favorite WR now, and second, is Howard in the doghouse?

  98. lambchop Says:

You know McCoy didn’t want to sack Winston, right? Also, he was caught telling his teammates on the sideline, “That’s my boy Vita Vea gettin after the QB!”

In all seriousness, kudos to Alex Cappa, he held his own. It’s an indictment to the Koetter-led staff for not waiving Benenoch and saving the new staff from cleaning out the trash.

  99. Bruce Blahak Says:

Refereeing is horrible…Boger crew always anti Bucs….what was with the spot that gave Panthers first down? Ref moved ball ahead from other officials spot

  100. orlbucfan Says:

I still am so psyched I can barely stand it. Go Defense!!! Bowles is doing what Dungy did when he was hired 23? years ago. WE won IN SPITE of the refs. I had it on radio as no TV over here in Tragic Kingdom-ville. GO Mighty Bucs!! Bring on the Gwhimps!! 🙂

  101. jjbucfan Says:

I hope Eli has a decent game this week that way he has to play against us. I don’t want that Jones kid to come in and give them a spark.

  102. Bobby Says:

Vita was a beast all night!! Barrett was unstoppable. We bent but never broke. Too many big plays still but no TD’s. Amazing D. I agree with Rivera not calling QB sneak on 4th and 1. Tried to get too clever, just like we did on 3rd and 1 with Barber standing at the sticks and Winston goes to the end zone instead of picking up the first down. Those plays almost always come back to bite you. Thank God Carolina was wearing dentures.

  103. Lol Says:

Were is all the Jameis Winston hate?? Its literally non stop every day on every post. Where is all the hate now? Nothing has changed, Winston definitely played this game……..

  104. Buccfan37 Says:

The Bucs were much improved, shutting down McCaffrey was huge. Without Hargreaves play the Bucs lose. All around game to get excited going forward.

  105. unbelievable Says:

Jamies played very good. His receivers and o-lineman still hung him out to dry a few times. I mean the sequence of plays that led to that safety was just awful.

Nails that long pass on first down play action but Godwin couldn’t get his left foot down. Then a penalty on another pass play when they were expecting run. Finally you figure you have to run, the defense knew, and got a safety. Ugh it was so Bucs.

Fortunately the defense looks improved and was able to hold on.

But let’s not pretend that Cam didn’t also have a terrible game. I mean he was missing some wide open guys. But hey a win is a win and I”ll take it. End of that game was sloppy AF though.

  106. Pewterplank Says:

Thank you Bucs for bringing joy to my son and I!
