Blame Jameis

September 4th, 2019

Win projection.

She doesn’t look like a stat geek.

But, alas, she is. And “she” would be Cynthia Frelund, stats analyst for NFL Network. And yes, she is much easier on the eyes than many of the calculator crowd and more soothing to listen to than, say, Michael Fabiano.

(As Joe often has twittered, the five most-feared words in the broadcast medium are “Now we welcome Michael Fabiano.”)

Frelund has run the numbers on her statty software and believes the Bucs will win four, five or six games this fall. And one reason for that? You can #BlameJameis.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 5.7 wins
Ceiling: 6.8
Floor: 4.7

The threat of a strong rushing attack helps create space for receivers — and vice versa. The Bucs’ pass catchers certainly command defenses’ constant attention, but questions on the ground don’t optimally set them up. And Jameis Winston’s turnover track record further limits Tampa’s projected wins, even with two-time Coach of the Year Bruce Arians at the helm.

If Jameis cuts down the fumbles, then Joe believes he will be just fine. It’s the fumbles that drive Joe out of a tree, not so much the interceptions. What, people think if you won’t throw deep a lot there won’t be interceptions?

While Frelund may not be in love with the Bucs running backs — who is? — it seems Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians likes them.

Just last night appearing on “Late Hits” co-hosted by Alex Marvez and Bill Polian, heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Arians partially chuckled and partially scoffed when asked about his running backs. He noted nobody likes them but he’s good with them.

He’s said that before.

Joe’s hoping Arians doesn’t have to eat his words.

What in the hell does she know. Joe stop sharing news that bspn craps out. This is NFL Network.– Joe I stop watching that crap and came here to get away, now you bring it here.

  2. The Buc Realist Says:

Nothing like having to depend on the game managing qb when he is inaccurarte, inconsistent, and cannot hit a deep ball in the NFL Passing League!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The sheep need to worry about the ineffective deep ball problem as much as the lack of a run game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This team cannot depend on long, drawn out drives!!!!!!!!!!! too easy for the mistakes to crop up during those long, plodding drives!!!!!!!!!! And other teams design defenses for the Bucs to make these long, multiple down drives take place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The truth will be exposed, just like ole coach stale biscuit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 days until the bucs rocket up the 2020 mock draft boards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. AJ Says:

What fries my chaps with these prognosticators. Is that these are the same ones who two years ago had the Bucs as the surprise team. A team on the rise and playoff bound. Now yes the Bucs crapped over themselves and has regressed since then. But the talent base is still there everyone thought highly of. And now there is much better coaching in place. Which I contend was a part of that regression. I remain optimistic with this team and Jameis improving greatly with game management. And with a Defense that will at least put up a fight now.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

So……in one article we talk about Jameis’ huge $30+ million dollar contract…..and in the next how he’s going to stink it up with turnovers and inaccuracy….
Somehow, I think this will be somewhere in the middle….
Jameis does a bit better……gets a good contract but not $30 (who else would pay him that)
But, our team will do much better because of the Defense.

  5. pittsshore Says:

She is usually spot on with her analytics. Although, 4 wins will put us out of the Tua sweepstakes. The Dolphins will get him with 1-2 wins. Life as a Buc Sucks.

  6. ocala Says:

The narrative by national pundits is Bucs don’t win because of Jamies.

Bucs passing offense was ranked number 1 in the NFL last year.

Bucs kicking FG% over the past two years was the worst in the NFL.

Bucs defense over the past two years was the worst in the NFL and one of the worst in NFL history.

Bucs running game over the past two years has been below average.

Of course Jamies can play with more consistency, but any rational person that is intelligent would clearly place the majority of the blame on the Bucs poor record on their defense, kicking and running game.

Three years ago the Bucs had a decent defense, bad kicking game and below average running game. So how did the Bucs do….they had a winning record.

  7. Bird Says:

She runs statistics with the aid of computer programs running fake games / match ups …I believe.
    She is actually really good.

I know it’s a different sport but it doesn’t matter to her. She does same thing for every sport …including fantasy football and March madness

I think it was 2 or 3 years ago but she picked every game correctly on the first day of March madness and maybe missed 1 the next. It was impressive start to the 2 biggest days of the tournament.
So say what you want , she knows what she is doing. She is not some hottie with no talent. She was espn. Now nfl network. Does draft kings picks.

I will still take the over.
I am hovering around 8-8 but could go a game either way.

  8. Youngbucs Says:

These win, lose projection articles remind of a John McKay quote: >>> “We’ve broken down the expansion teams and they’ve averaged winning 2.7 games their first year, which to me is rather difficult. I figured out the 2, but the .7 has got me wondering what the hell is going on.”

  9. Bird Says:

    Ocala

Actually the narrative here is when bucs win it’s thanks to Jameis …break out the American flag from the writers. “Where are all the haters at?” Same old site here. Objective is not the right word.

When fitz started season (hall of fame record ) with 3 straight games of 400 yards and 3 td …everyone was saying wait until Jameis gets to run this offense.

Then fitz jumped off a cliff …literally….

Now When the Bucs lose and fitz was QB , it was the same old …he is a journeyman / hot garbage …what did you expect? It’s fitz.

When the Bucs lose and Jameis was QB , surprisingly it was not Jameis fault at all. It was everyone else fault…but Jameis. Jameis is untouchable here.

That’s the best part of this debate. Same players playing for same coaches under the leadership of 2 different QBs …but one gets the credit …the other is a dog turd in your toilet that won’t flush.

  10. isrBuc Says:

    spot on.
8-8 won’t do us any good either so no need to get upset. She’s not the one picking busts causing us to pver pay for 3rd tier FAs and putting us in cap hell.

  11. pittsshore Says:

Ocala being just as dumb as his butt buddy QB. Passing yards high due to Alwyays playing from behind due to JW’s turnovers. Also due to the last 3-4 games of the year when the opposing team has nothing to play for and will typically rest players. This year end run always get the ignorant people in Ocala to state “wait till next year y’all” I said it when we drafted Apples McGoo that he will set the franchise back 10 years…we are half way there.

  12. Dapostman Says:

I want to know did she predict the Rams to win in 2017 or the Bears in 2018? Her models are based on past performance and as we all know are not always indicative of future results. Another nothing burger, again.

  13. FortMyersDave Says:

So the girl in purple says the floor is 4.7 = 5 wins, the ceiling is 6.8 = 7 wins. She is not too far off from the 6-10 to 7-9 that Vegas has locked into….. Seems reasonable to me and as Joe says, a pleasure to look at while she explains that the Bucs are mediocre in all likelihood. She is probably not far off unlike that Miller guy who hangs out with Pat Kirwin predicting 2-14 for shock value…. If Carolina implodes which Todd Wright has alluded to in a couple of his podcasts (Todd is not a big fan of Cam Newton) you might see her ceiling of 7 dash 9 or even 8-8 if the Panthers go 4-12 but if not and the Panthers sweep the Bucs its likely another ****ing season in Buccaneer Cove at the bottom of the NFC South and drafting 5th to 7th with a 10 or 11 loss season and out of the Herbert/Tua QB sweepstakes that Miami and the Vegas Grudens are tanking for… Its a Bucs fan’s life…..

    Bird nailed it.

In my house, we refer to said turd as an “unflushable”.

For example, all the negativism within this site is merely an unflushable turd.

    Death, taxes and JBF negativism.

    All unflushables.

  17. Big_Buc$ Says:

So what is so special about Herbert? I don’t see anything that makes him a top pick. Also the UGA QB too I don’t see nothing special. Nothing more than a game manager. Call me crazy but I don’t Tua will be any different than Jameis. He has a gunslinger mind set. We saw in the title game how he couldn’t make the tight window throws in man coverage. Not saying he isn’t good but Tampa gets another QB with this offensive line things will still be the same. I wanna put this out their if Tampa is looking for a QB next year look at the Washington QB Easton. He has the size and the arm and can make all the NFL throws and he can throw the deep ball. I know folks will say he transferred from UGA but lets not forget he left because he got hurt. Fromn didn’t beat him outright. Look at UGA’s success folks. Running game and solid defense production. Any QB will win with that combination.

  19. Siege the Bay Says:

    Bird,
When Fitz lost games it, was because he was throwing 3 int’s and looking horrible. When Jameis does that, trust me, he gets the blame. However, there are many games where Jameis has 300 yards 2 or 3 tds, and even scored for us in the final 4 minutes of the game, heck even the final 2 minutes of the game and we still lose! There have been a lot of games where it wasn’t Jameis’ fault we lost, and games where it was definitely his fault.

  20. DB55 Says:

    Bird

Fitz three 3 f’n ints in the first half. Gimme a f’n break JW does that and you guys would never let it go. Then in the 4th game he was awful 48-??? Come on man. Dude got shut out by Redskins. Smh.

Stop with the f’n fitz already he’s hot garbage and always has been.

  21. DB55 Says:

I always go back to the ATL game where JW was virtually perfect and they still lost the game. Meh this whole org should just shut down or sell the team to Jay-Z

  22. WyomingDude Says:

Frelund is on the cast of Fantasy Live daily on NFL Network. Been watching that show daily for awhile during Fantasy season, and since she’s been “accurate” only about 60% of the time on all her statistically-infused so called “predictions”.

Whereas Fabiano is correct about 85% of the time, so…

Meh, here. No rocket science for a 5-6 win prediction for the Bucs, from anyone. I myself see an 8-8 season in 2019. Will need some injuries in the division.

  23. Ben real Says:

Lol so him throwing into triple coverage does not bother you joe? How about the interception he threw in cincy?

So according to you I am dumb for stating statistical facts about the Bucs?

I would suggest you try not to insult my city or me just because you have a differing opinion.
I am sorry you are upset with whatever is happening in your life that causes you to insult other people. Hopefully, you are just having a bad day.

I hope you turn it around and have a good day.

As for the Bucs…Jamies needs to play with more consistency, but the QB of the #1 ranked passing attack is not the predominant reason the Bucs have been loosing games, in my opinion.

  28. Buccfan37 Says:

The Bucs as losers bandwagon should be crushed by now from all the weight of non Buc fans throwing in their meaningless two cents.

  29. DB55 Says:

    Luv

Why not? Sounds good to me. Town don’t deserve a team. .233 winning percentage in 40+ years. Lmao. Come on ….

IN CARSON PALMER’S FIRST SEASON IN BRUCE ARIANS’ SYSTEM

    HE THREW 22 INTERCEPTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HE ALSO FINISHED 22ND IN THE NFL IN RAW QBR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    BUT THE “TEAM” WENT 10-6.

JAMEIS FINISHED 5TH IN THE NFL IN RAW QBR LAST YEAR AND THE “TEAM” WENT 3-6.

    IT’S ALL ABOUT “TEAM”.

BY THE WAY … AFTER PALMER’S DISASTROUS INDIVIDUAL FIRST SEASON WITH ARIANS, HE WAS IN THE MVP RACE THE VERY NEXT YEAR.
