About The Pass Blocking

September 8th, 2019

Offensive line has work to do.

When Joe looked at today’s game, Joe believed the key element to beating the 49ers is how well the Bucs can pass block.

Jenna Laine of ESPN is of the mind that’s not an issue for today, but an issue for the whole season.

Laine believes how well America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, stays upright will determine if the Bucs are once again losers, or if they can finally get to a winning record in the rugged NFC South.

Winston enters Year 5 — the most pivotal season of his career — with a well-assembled cast of receiving targets: Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, O.J. Howard and Cameron Brate. But he won’t be able to do much if an offensive line that surrendered a league-high 15 sacks through three preseason games doesn’t protect him.

That display against the Browns two weeks ago was disturbing. Yeah, Joe gets it; it’s preseason. Well, the Browns arguably have the best pass rush in the NFL. The 49ers, potentially, are not far behind.

The Bucs had two weeks to figure out how to prevent that jailbreak on display against the Browns. People were ragdolled and freight trained. If that doesn’t improve quickly, Jameis will get maimed and there goes the season.

Hey man if this team falters it’s going to fall squarely on the shoulders of Licht and Arians. Arians is not as culpable yet, but we have consistently seen Licht have little to no interest in getting the massive upgrade both lines have needed for YEARS. Instead he wastes second round picks on guys he perceives as underdogs. How about you draft us a guard instead of a CB out of central Michigan. It’s moronic man.

I am more excited to see our defense.

  8. Pass blocking??? What the heck is pass blocking??? Signed Jason Licht Says:

Is that part of the game??? What is this pass blocking you speak of? Signed Jason Licht and the offensive line.

  9. Jean Lafitte Says:

2 of the 5 sacks were on Jameis. I’m more concerned about their run blocking and opening holes for our RB’s, otherwise we’ll see umpteen more articles on how crappy our RB’s were for a whole week.

I believe the winner of today’s game will have a higher score than the loser. Mark it down. You heard it here first. Go Bucs!!!

  11. Defense Rules Says:

According to Spotrac, Bucs have the 5th most expensive OLine among the 32 teams (at $43.3 mil). That’s over 40% of the cost of our most expensive OFFENSE in the NFL (coming in at a whopping $106.0 mil). Yup, we rank #1 today in the cost department as an offensive unit. Have no fear though, our DEFENSE compensates for that by only costing $55.1 mil (barely HALF of what the Bucs offense costs and ranking #29 out of 32 teams).

Should stand to reason that our identity … and most costly unit … should be our OFFENSE. So OLine, DO YOUR JOB. Jameis, DO YOUR JOB. RBs, WRs & TEs, DO YOUR JOB. And oh ya, DO IT WELL, which means SCORING POINTS, MINIMIZING TURNOVERS and CONTROLLING THE CLOCK. If you expect to get paid like the big dogs, perform like the big dogs. NO EXCUSES.

I know…right. Captain (bleeping obvious). Lawd.

  13. NPRSageBoy Says:

Fifth highest paid O line in the NFL needs to start earning their keep. Even so, in the BA offense JayMiss is gonna take a beating.

Talk about last minute? You’ve had about 2 weeks to have a “GAY” nameplate stenciled on your jersey.

Just wear a rainbow head band and we’ll know what you mean.

  15. unbelievable Says:

Because Jenna Laine has functioning eyeballs and can see how suspect the 5th highest paid o-line in the league actually is.

  16. BucsBandit Says:

    HUH??????

This exactly same O-LINE was ranked above average last season in the league for Pass Protection — 15th in sacks yielded per play. They probably would have been ranked even higher if Winston held the ball less (which has been discussed by Joe that Winston is one of the worst for holding the ball too long).

This O-Line is exactly the same as last year but upgraded with Cappa.

Everyone keeps putting too much weight into that Browns preseason game. The Browns have one of the best D-Lines in the NFL and our guys seemed to just have a bad game, possibly with some new stuff they were trying to do.

    BUT…

Let’s stop making excuses for Jameis Winston and blaming it on the same O-Line that was above average last year and STILL Winston was benched for his poor performance.

Jameis Winston’s success or failure this season is going to come down to ONE element… Jameis Winston.

    Gee. Pass blocking important?

[sarc] I learned something new. [/sarc]

    Who’da thunk it?

  18. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

The Browns game was pre season, meaning we did not game plan for them.
We can’t blame Arians for not wanting to show all his cards in a meaningless game.

  19. Jeff Says:

Uhhh, nope. Simply not collectively talented enough. Should be a close game. Ya know, it’s about F-ing time our Defense wins a game for us.

  20. Cgmaster27 Says:

@ghost goes your invisible player Darrell henderson doing today?

  21. Cgmaster27 Says:

@bucsbandit you’re trolling reached stupid level. So a shoddy offensive line doend affect the qb? And no, the offensive line was not above average last year, that’s something you tell yourself so you can lay more blame on Jamie’s. Just stop ,you are making the rest of us dumber with every post you make.

  22. Oneilbucs Says:

I thought Goff was so great!!!! I thought Matt Ryan was great if Jamies has a game like they are having so far yall will be going crazy!!! Ryan has waaaaay better players around him than what Jamies have but no one never blames him for his team losing. Ryan has a good running back and a decent defense what’s his excuse then ????

  23. D1 Says:

    DJAX 3rd qtr 126yds 2 TD’S.

    Glad he’s gone

  24. Oneilbucs Says:

D1 the thing is that Djax is on a team that can run the ball witch means he will have more 1on 1 . Every good year he has had the team was always able to run the ball. What happened when he came to a team with no running game they were able to keep a safety on top of him cause we couldn’t run the ball. Now what’s wrong with Dirk look how Matt Ryan looks now since Dirk got there so far ???

  25. D1 Says:

    Cgmaster,

Pass protection , winston was 12th in clean pocket throws. And BB, is accurate to include Winston’s near the bottom league wise holding on to the ball.

Run blocking, not great but it allowed our sub par RB’s to gain 100 yds a game avg with winston.

I’m guessing you’re not disputing the stats, because the numbers are what they are, but that BB is using it incorrectly.
