$32 Million For Jared Goff

September 3rd, 2019

It’s all over NFL Network and various media, the news has spread about as wide on the fresh grin on the face of America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.

The Rams have reached an agreement to extend the contract of fourth-year quarterback Jared Goff to the tune of six years and $32 million per season with $110 million guaranteed.

Joe’s not seeing all the contract specifics yet but they don’t matter. Jameis is due $21 million this season, the last year of his rookie contract. He will expect at least $30 million annually if he has any kind of solid 2019 season. And if Jameis plays quite well, then he’ll be expecting to break the bank more than Goff.

Today’s news shouldn’t change anything for Jameis, but it certainly could help ramp up the pressure he feels, especially if his offensive line pulls repeat performances of what was seen against Cleveland two weeks ago. Ridiculous sums of money are at stake, and no quarterback should tolerate that kind of effort from the guys in charge of making sure he scores that payday protecting him.

This is going to be a very interesting negotiation to say the least…

  2. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Playoffs = Payday… licht has totally messed up the cap unless the bucs are in the playoffs not sure its wise to splurge when this team needs so much

  3. BetterBucFan Says:

Jameis is not going to ask for as much as Goff. Goff is, simply put, better. Everyone knows it.

  4. tmaxcon Says:

Jameis just needs to keep protect himself at all costs keep himself healthy and escape the NFL’s black hole Tampa bay Buccaneers he’s too talented to waste anymore time on this small market irrelevant franchise…. jameis dont make the same mistake evans made and resign with this circus…. even if it means sitting out a year escape Tampa at any cost if you want success

  5. Coburn Says:

Wow I mean goos for these guys if they can pull that kinda money. You wonder on a macro level how we’ve been accustomed to athere’s being paid so much and only difference between being paid 20 mil a year and 32 is pride really. Hey as an athlete you should have a certain amount of pride. Can’t see how anyone could be hurting if they “only” made 20mil despite others making nore but hey… if that’s what owners and businessmen feel they’re worth.. blows you away qhen people who save lives every day make a fraction of that. Again though if you can pull that kinda dough all the power to you

  6. BucInCLE Says:

It’s not a popular opinion but I really think we should’ve locked Jameis up after last season. Could’ve gotten him on a team friendly deal and if he didn’t work out, traded him for something next offseason.

  7. Buc believer Says:

Good for these guys that they can make that kind of dough. At least they earn it unlike the fat cats that pay them (are you listening Glazers) who get there money by ruining corporations and buying sport franchises on leverage backed by ill gotten means. All stemming from daddy buying cheap mobile home parks and gouging the poor tenants of the slums they bought.

  8. Maddog Says:

I’m looking, I just don’t see JW being worth 32 Million a year. That would be insane if anyone paid him that much for a year.

  9. CalBucsFan Says:

Jameis hasn’t proved he’s even worth the $21M he’s getting this year, let alone similar monies to Goff. And instead of including that small detail in your article Joe, you through the line under the bus as if Jameis hasn’t contributed to the team’s problems?

Heck, this is absolutely his PROVE-IT year and unless he shows the caliber of QB’ing of Goff, Brady, or Brees and takes the team into the playoffs and even to the Super Bowl this year, he should consider himself lucky if they bring him back AT ALL for $21M with about a 3-4% raise/year like most Americans get from their employers, if they’re lucky. Add a few incentive clauses to earn more and maybe he will stay focused and perform as he’s being coached.

It’s time to stop making excuses for JW, most of us Bucs’ fans have done it because we want him to succeed, but it’s time for him to put up or go away!

  10. Mort Says:

Someone tell me why Goff is considered good please. This is just what quarterbacks make. He isnt a top ten QB. This is just what they make now.

  11. Wesley Says:

32 million for 16 games wtf? NFL contracts are out of control.

  12. Lazy Animations (Weeb) Says:

Tmaax claims to be a fan and say he will be ‘positive’ when ‘the team gives him something to be positive about’. Then proceeds to post comments where he he thinks good players on this team should leave while they can. Wouldn’t you want them to stay to help the team get better. I mean Evans leaving and Jameis will make this drought last longer. I would understand if you thought they were bad players. But telling them to leave even though you’re a ‘fan’ of the Bucs? I guess your mindset is ‘I’m a fan of the Bucs; I want the Bucs to stay rotten’.

  13. Wesley Says:

Mort- no it’s definitely not the average.

  14. Todd Says:

Mahomes will be the first quarter-billion-dollar-QB if he stays healthy. Jameis won’t be that…but if (when) we get to the playoffs, he’ll get $35 million per year for LOTS of years. And BA isn’t going ANYWHERE!

  15. Costa Rica John Says:

I never thought Goff was elite. It took great coaching, good running game, and a very good defense to get the Rams to the Super Bowl last year. Remember hiw Goff played under Jeff Fischer. Everyone though he might be a bust.
In today’s NFL you have to hit on your draft picks and keep the players four years. That keeps your salary cap low enough to keep a few elite players.

  16. Dapostman Says:

My guess is the price of NFL Sunday Ticket will probably go up.

  17. WillieG Says:

JW caved under the pressure of having Fitz as his backup. He’s going to be a basket case this season. It would not surprise me one bit if he had his worst season to date. I hope he doesn’t, but it wouldn’t surprise me at all if he did.

  18. Buc4life Says:

Goff has proved so much…He has the one of the RBs in the league and a top defense. What does Jameis have outside of Evan’s and Howard? What happened in the Superbowl when Gurley was hurt? Goff starred up at the lights and looked clueless. Real system QB. Hopefully Jameis will have more help on both sides of the ball so he can have a great year because he is much better than Goff.

  19. tmaxcon Says:

    Lazy Animations (Weeb)

Glazers have no intentions of fielding a competitive team. They have trained low standard bucfan than a good run every couple decades is all they need…. you cant be this bad for this long without trying to be bad….

Tmax is a troll. Just ignore the poor thing. Hes got enough problems as you can see by his posts.

  21. Bucsfan1988 Says:

    Unbelievable!!!!

Dallas just locked up La’el Collins on a 5 year $50+ million contract for their RT…

Please tell me how the hell they have money for their MLB Smith (Just extended), now Collins…
Yet they still are going to have enough cash to sign Zeke, Dak, & Amari Cooper to huge contracts??

    Something doesn’t sound right???

  22. Ben real Says:

Ok 4 years of mediocre… well slightly less mediocre play and one good year would be worth 30 mill per joe?

  23. DooshLaRue Says:

    Goff
65 TDs and 26 INTs in 3 years.

    VS

69 TDs and 44 INTs in 3 years

Couldn’t find the fumbles lost data on either, but I think we all know who leads in that stat.

So, if Goff is worth 32 million then the math would suggest that JW might be worth low 20s…. based on production.

  24. Ben real Says:

And even if they do your gonna have to gut the team to pay him and back to 5 win seasons

  25. T REX Says:

Todd, Arians is 67. Dude. Enough cheerleading. No way I pay Winston anything until he does it for a sustained period of time…more than 6 weeks. Franchise him before giving him mega money. Not a believer.

  26. Justafan Says:

Jameis will have earned 40 million dollars after this season. Why do people act like that’s not enough to live on? Jameis is going to be fine if he never earns another penny, a regular person that makes 250,000 dollars a year, would have to work for 160 years to gross earn 40 million dollars, so can you please quit talking about Jameis and money.

  27. tmaxcon Says:

    Justafan

Spoken like a true socialist who is jealous of jameis earning potential…..

  28. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

If Licht is in charge Jameis is getting 35 million or more a season

If a good GM comes in then he’s out of here unless he improves greatly

  29. Tval Says:

The Bucs should lock down a LONG extension while Jameis is still a bargain. The price is ONLY going up. Goff isn’t as special and their stats just prove he isn’t asked to do as much.

  30. rhenry Says:

Man, I hang with the wrong crowd cause most of the regular folks I know are lucky to earn 35,000.

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    WillieG Says
“JW caved under the pressure of having Fitz as his backup. “The

Actually, I think the unproven accusations and his lynching n the media and fans had more to do with it.

  32. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

If Jameis does well…as in fixing his weakesses, he’ll get his money regardless of the win/loss record. And he will deserve it.

There is a reason wins and losses are not mentioned in individual player stats…because it take a team to win.

If Winston does all things right and we still lose, then it won’t be on the offense all. It’ll likely be the kicker or the defense.

However, I believe we are NFC Championship bound. Let the trolls mock me.

See, I know that before last year, we could have flipped or record had defense and kicking been better. They should be better now. And that will shutup the trolls and nancies.

  33. Dewey Selmon Says:

Not really concerned about the amount, it’s not my money. I would like to see what % of the cap it is relative to other QB’s.

  34. JimmyJack Says:

The concern is winning. The money isn’t even a factor right now. We got bigger fish to fry……Like I don’t know…….The entire 2019 season.

When the time comes Bruce will make the decision. If he wants to sign Winston then he will get paid the going rate.

Off-season is the time to worry about contracts. Right now the worry is San Francisco.

  35. SB Says:

Jared Goff came out the Year after JW3 and EVERYONE SCOFFED at the Idea maybe Goff or Wentz was better than him.
    Who is laughing now?

  36. JimmyJack Says:

Bonzai you are half wrong on that. Wins & Losses are not included on generic sites like NFL dot com but if you go to a true stats site like football reference they are. And they are included for good reason. Same reason W-L record is recorded for goalies and pitchers.

  37. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Time for Jameis to sell futures contracts & shares on his salary to his Olinemen…..maybe if they have an extra financial stake in Jameis health & success they will play better.

  38. Barlow Says:

Apples to oranges. He has yet to be proven inconsistent and still makes rediculous coin. It could be that this season tells the truth on JW. If so let’s start again with young team and even younger QB draft? We’re in a pickle…
Rely on aggro pass rushing route jumping defense and put offense on front street. Please Bucs let’s freaking go!!!!!!!

  39. Kgh4life Says:

Sorry to say it, but Jameis Winston will not get a second contract from the Bucs. Jameis has proven in 4 years that he’s just not a franchise QB. Doesn’t take care of the football, his progressions through defenses are slow and so is his release, and lastly, he’s just not accurate with the football.

  41. SteelStudBuc Says:

You honestly think Jameis is worth $30 million?
You gotta be outta your damn mind.

  42. Barlow Says:

Oh yeah and also O-line needs to step up and protect as well as make some holes for a running game. Take some heat off JW as well as switching our offense up to grind and open up the field along side the multiple tight end threats. Doesn’t seem like rocket science? So many weapons. Keep QB upright. Create space.

So how are you coming up to 11 wins????? Are you Adding the next 4 year win total ???? Thst will be close but not likely 11 closer to 9

  44. Defense Rules Says:

Sorry folks, but the Rams just signed their own death warrant. Give that much money to one player and the TEAM will suffer someplace else. I’d much rather see the Bucs build a defensive powerhouse (Top-10) with an average offense (Top-20) than the other way around. Too much money for a Top-10 offense leaves us with a weak defense, as we’ve already seen. We won’t win the NFC South without a strong defense.

  45. tmaxcon Says:

    D R

Its 2019 not 1950 never once has a defense first team dominated with multiple championships. Grear Defense first teams like ravens and bears were one and done…. all dynasties are built with dominating offensive units…

  46. tmaxcon Says:

Teams that repeat have dominant qbs…. dominate defensive units like bears and ravens one and done. Of course every now and then you get a bad team with a highly ranked defense that gets lucky like bucs and recent bronco teams but those are one year wonders not consistent winners

  47. Oneilbucs Says:

How come Rogers miss the playoffs 2 years in a row??? If you can’t stop the other teams from scoring it doesn’t matter who the quarterback is you are going to lose!!!! Rogers is a prime example of that it takes a team to win games !!!! I hope Jamies leave this team now so that yall can see it takes a team!!! So if we draft a quarterback next year then we should go to the super bowl ???? Ain’t no team is 1 quarterback away from wining the super bowl. Jamies has been a victim of when you are drafted to a bad team and bad franchise and bad GM that can’t build a real team around you then your career will be hurting. Jamies has never had a good or decent defense or a running game. That’s what a young quarterback needs to be successful while he’s still learning the speed of the game. Look at Goff he has a good running game and a good defense. What happened when teams took the run game from him ??? He didn’t look to good right. Cause he’s still growing and learning about the speed and the NFL game as hold. But he’s not ask to as much and most of his throws are easy throws. But Jamies was ask to come in and win a championship regardless of the team around him and be a hall of fame quarterback at the age of 24 . And that’s not fair to him when other quarterbacks are giving more time to grow and not be hall of famers at age of 24 . GO BUCS!!!!!

  48. Oneilbucs Says:

Defense Rules. I’m with you on that bro. That’s our real identity. Defense with a run game and a ok passing game. Defense wins championships ask the Chiefs last year!!!

  49. SB Says:

Pretty much what DR just said.

That and short of “meaningful games in January” JW is against the wall.
I am pulling for him and US!
    GO BUCS!!!!

  50. Rod Munch Says:

All you Winston haters should prove how sincere you are by writing your displeasure with Winston on your body then covering yourself in bacon and jumping into the lions pit at Busch Gardens. That would prove to me you’re more than just another whiny d-bag and you’d get massive cred in my eyes.

  51. tmaxcon Says:

  55. BigHog Says:

Get paid FAMOUS …if not here then there!!!

  56. BucemBruski Says:

You dont have to be the best to be the highest paid. You just have to have a good season in a contract year and a team will overpay because of how valued the QB position is

  57. Buccaroo Says:

Say goodbye to either Mike Evans, or Chris Godwin, or OJ Howard, etc. For Jameis to be paid that kind of money sacrifices have to come from somewhere.

  58. tnew Says:

If things continued to escalate in paying a QB, teams would start using “money ball” type programs to build their rosters. Teams would start passing on resigning the QB with hopes of drafting ones or signing serviceable vets that work out every 4-5 seasons, then passing that player on. I think things will change in the next CBA

I expect an NBA style “Larry Bird” exception that allows for teams to resign a player they drafted and developed, but are provided cap relief for players that have established “tenure” with their team…

OR…a franchise tag redux in which the team can have 3-4 tags, but the cap value is based on the average top 5 salaries, but the player can be paid whatever the team wants to shell out.

The current CBA expires after next season (2020 season) and things will change. Just another reason there is a super-high probability that Winston gets a franchise tag after this season. Last year was the season to lock him up, but it wasn’t prudent given his on and off the field issues. Long term deals will become less and less common with the uncertainties of the next CBA

  59. tmaxcon Says:

    Tnew

The leagues biggest problem with future cba’s is young people could careless about watching sports. You want to look up a scary number, google the demographic breakdown of who watches sports. Traditional broadcasting will be dead in 15 years the networks won’t be able to continue to overpay for nfl games. The league has big issues coming up anyone who disagrees is in complete denial. Nfl has had great run but it wint last forever.

  60. BucsBandit Says:

If they pay Jameis Winston $30M+/year he’ll be the only QB in NFL History to earn that amount AFTER BEING **BENCHED** WHILE COMPLETELY HEALTHY.

Tmaxcon… “All dynasties are built with great offensive units”. That’s not really true tmax. For one thing, the only modern-day ‘dynasty’ is New England, and there’s a lot of different reasons for their success. One is an owner named Kraft. Two is a HC AND GM named Belicheck. Three is a QB named Brady. Four is perennially playing in a weak-ass division. Five is always having a top defense in terms of POINTS ALLOWED. I could go on but I’m bored now.

Great offensive juggernauts are expensive once you have to pay mega-bucks to multiple offensive players. Too many teams do that at the expense of building a competent defense. Like the Bucs maybe? Sorry tmax but I’d rather see a more balanced TEAM erring on the side of great defense. Even in that scenario the COST of the offense will almost always exceed the cost of the defense. But at least it’d approach better balance. Go check the COSTS of the Pats’ offense vs defense. You might be surprised.

  69. Pete I Says:

While I doubt Winston will ever be “worth” whatever he gets paid, I can’t see how the NFL can continue this business model. 50% or more of your cap tied up in no more than 10 players on your team. No matter how much the cap goes up this does not seem a sustainable system for very long.

  70. RustyRhinos Says:

All the talk about the Oline stepping up to take care of Jameis, we think we have bad oline play now. Wait until we have to pay the QB 25-30+ million every season. Were do the Bucs come up with the money to pay Howard, Goodwin, and any other productive players? When has Winston earned his lay raise and new contract? This season, last season, season before that? We need to see IMHO improvement in one area that is the Win column. If not why do we pay him? Potential? In year 5? When does the potential tire ever meet the road?

SHOW US! STOP TALKING AND SHOW US!!!!

  75. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Winston….still, and indisputably, has divided the Bucs’ fan base more than any other player in the history of this franchise. Signing him for big bucks would be a huge mistake…..but…..when have the Glazers ever made a mistake?

  76. GhostofSchiano Says:

Joe or the video of Jared Goff going undercover as a college football transfer?

He goes out to his first practice, messes up a little then starts throwing 60+ yard strikes. Funny video, it’s on you tube. The college kids reactions are priceless especially the QB’s he’s competing with for the starting job.

  77. D-Rome Says:

I hope Jameis earns the big contract because it will means he played well enough. I’m rooting for him to succeed but if he has another typical season the Bucs should move on in my opinion. If they don’t, they’ll have buyers remorse like Cincinnati has with Andy Dalton. You think the Bengals will give him another contract? Hell no. They’ve been regretting that contract for the past 4 years.

  78. pittsshore Says:
