Tribal Warning

August 29th, 2019

The PFF tribe has spoken.

In order to pocket a journalism degree from Sean Payton University, Joe had to take graduate-level English classes.

(There, Joe learned the English language is ever-changing. What is incorrect grammar one decade may be correct the next. Don’t believe Joe? Read the Declaration of Independence, written by a man considered one of the leading scholars of his day. Additionally, look how the word “hate” has been hijacked by pop culture in recent times.)

So Joe has to admit, even armed with this background knowledge, Joe’s not hip to the mother tongue of the PFF tribe, which traffics in content served to otherwise English-speaking peoples. Take this excerpt from a piece typed by Ben Linsey on the most important issue for each NFL team entering the 2019 season.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Everywhere coverage
Key Number: 76.5% completion percentage allowed (last in the NFL)

The Buccaneers had one of the worst secondaries in the league last season in pretty much any metric available. They had the second-highest expected points added per play against mark, the highest percentage of plays allowing positive expected points added, the highest completion percentage allowed (76.5%) and the highest passer rating allowed (117.0). Their highest-graded member of the secondary was safety Justin Evans, who managed just a 67.6 overall grade. There has been some buzz around the Buccaneers new-look passing attack with the arrival of Bruce Arians, but if they are to make any noise in the NFC South, their coverage as a team will have to improve.

What all this has to do with blocking and tackling Joe isn’t sure. But one thing in this gibberish stands out, and even those who struggle with literacy can decipher it: the pass defense of the Bucs last year was a travesty.

If new defensive coordinator Todd Bowles can just get the secondary to play average pass defense, especially in this pass-happy division filled with dangerous quarterbacks, then the Bucs should at least be competitive.

If the Bucs pass defense does not improve this year, well, the Bucs at least should have a decent draft slot next spring.

No oline. No run game. No defense. Hey, let’s blame Jameis. Says NOBODY with a brain. πŸ™ˆπŸ™ˆπŸ˜†πŸ˜†πŸ€£πŸ€£

Our Secondary looks Lights Out better than last yr. I don’t know how much that actually says but I will take it. I think if Vea and Suh can generate enough pass rush then this team can win some games!

Only 6 more days to get into the Pickem guys!!!

The excerpt doesn’t mention blocking or tackling at all, but that’s the first thing you write following the snip

We had the second-highest expected points added per play against Mark who?

  5. Jean Lafitte Says:

I’m personally sick of talking draft by the second week in October.

It’s always a race to the bottom!! Yoohoo!! …NOT

    Even tmax Joe?

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Just ponder this…..we drafted 4 defensive players in rounds 2-4….

    Bunting, Dean, Edwards & Nelson

You could look at that two ways….

We didn’t need to draft them because VH3, Davis & Whitehead are much improved.

We needed to draft them because we didn’t know that coaching could improve VH3, Davis & Whitehead would work so well.

Anyway, we have great depth in the defensive backfield….and that is with Ryan Smith on suspension…..and the need to cut a pretty good safety perhaps Darian Stewart

  8. Swampbuc Says:

Last year’s team probably wins at least 3 games more, maybe 4, if Bowles was calling the defense with his scheme instead of Lovie Smith’s clone Mike.

Jameis has a lot of change to digest. New offense, changing mechanics, and a mandate to throttle his instincts. (Hit the checkdown if it’s open immediately!)

All warranted, and together, very difficult for someone who has engrained habits to pull off. His performance behind the OL that gave us all night terrors against Cleveland is, to me, the hinge on which this season will swing.

    Bwaaaahahaha………Thanks Doosh, I needed that.

Alright!!! We have Bucs fans signed up for the Pickem. St. Augustine Buc is the one we all need to worry about. He placed Second last year and he Won the year before that.
I am coming for you St. Aug!!

RPirate..if I was playing secondary, it would be a record “worst against” in the history of the league..by a mile.

  12. tmaxcon Says:

    nice doosh!!!

the pass rush and secondary is still a travesty. you don’t have a single proven player in the secondary and the dline, well simply has very little talent outside of suh and that includes the knucklehead jpp who will play less than 4 games this thus rendering himself meaningless.

  13. TexBuc Says:

We lost 6 games last year by one score or less with the worst pass defense and extra point kicking.

With just an average pass defense and improved kicking game we realistically could have won half those games for an 8-8 record. That is why I am believe we are a realistic 8-8/9-7 team this year with better coaching.

  14. SOEbuc Says:

All these round 1-3 DBs past few years Licht has been picking up are going to show up in their original 3-4 positions with all the blitzing Bowels has shown so far.

  15. SOEbuc Says:

^^And this LB corp is looking good right now without LVD on the field and Devin White not showing so much.

P.S. Devin White wearing the green dot might be the dumbest f#cking thing they can do. LVD is a vet Pro-Bowler and White is a rookie who hasn’t shown much in PS.

  16. GhostofSchiano Says:

Agree with Swampbuc. I would go one step further and say in addition to having Todd Bowles last year I think with Arians as HC and not Koetter maybe 4-5 wins more.

This season will be more a testament to Koetter / Smitty if they were as bad as we think, if it was (is) a coaching problem, talent problem, Licht problem or something else entirely.

    GO BUCS

  17. EvolvingBucsFan Says:

GO GET Jadaveon Clowney , do what you have to do, Cut Brate and Beau Allen and free up some coin. I don’t care make it happen.

Seems 5 teams are in talks?

  18. TexBuc Says:

Clowney has the same question marks as he did when he was drafted; gets hurt easily, lack of effort, poor against the run, and I am guessing the Texans coaching staff feel the same about him as Steve Spurrier as his college coach.

If my vote counts please Bruce do not trade for this guy.

  19. Alanbucsfan Says:

    TexBuc-

You can add in the Redskin and Cowboy games- some of the dumbest play calling ever and the 2nd Saints game- terrible 2nd 1/2 coaching

“the pass defense of the Bucs last year was a travesty” – J0E

    Well, no kidding! lol

I think we all recall the entire defense outside of JPP was a travesty, Joe. No need to bring up bad memories πŸ˜‰

  22. unbelievable Says:

All those paragraphs just to say the pass defense was awful last year?

In other breaking news: water is wet. More at 11.

  23. Old School Athlete Says:

I somewhat get what he’s talking about. They are categories that the Sabre metric nerds look at. I don’t follow that stuff. If Sabre metrics was all you needed, the Rays would win the World Series.
Here are my Sabre metric categories: how many guys love winning? How many guys hate losing more than they love winning? How many would rather raise the Lombardi trophy than eat? Build me a team full of those guys.

  24. gambelero Says:

Can’t believe Joe has worked alongside GA all these years and it didn’t rub off on him. Dude is a stone cold stud with the English language.

  25. Buccaneerscotty Says:

Don’t blame Winston for anything he’s so great he keeps drives moving and has a great deep ball he so great! The best thin about him is he never turns the ball over. I’m so happy we have him we win 6 games a year and he is not to blame for any of it he’s a America’s quarterback and a pro bowl player.. oh man without him we could only be winning 3 or 4 games a year. Thank God we have such a great pro bowl player like him. Please stop blaming him for anything people…
